Met up with an old friend & touring companion tonight for 1st time in 27 years. The old Seldom Scene version of this tune came on his ipod & he reminded me that we were there that night at the Spectrum to hear the Dead play this. I'd completely forgotten, but the memory flooded back - so many of us at that show (Band & fans alike) were worried about friends and family out in SF, even though it'd been a couple days the phones weren't really back up yet & info was still trickling in. You can hear how some of us recognized the song immediately (though the Dead had never played it before it's popular in the bluegrass world,) and everyone else got it pretty quick. I imagine Jerry knew the song & taught it to the others backstage that day. The connection between the band & the audience was so powerful that night. Watch as the crowd reaction boosts the band to perform better, the encouragement and feeling going back & forth, building and growing into something truly wonderful. Everyone felt better for it. Moments like that were what made all the effort spent touring with the Dead worthwhile.

I live in the Bay Area...and lived through that quake. First time I heard this ( On the David Gan's "GD Hour"), i was in tears.
    Thanks!

Fing epic! How this band could whip songs out on a dime is unmatched. Love me some Jerry!

yes. Though I think it was just some of the smaller eruptions. The main one had been the day before or something. Though not 100% sure on that part. But they did play as Helen blew up
