If you like The Band, you should check out Ursa and the Major Key. They have a song called Only The Sky Is Blue that sounds pretty similar to The Band, and their whole album is influenced by The Band, Floyd, Grateful Dead, Beatles, etc.
I had this conversation with my daughter today. I asked her who would be on stage from the 90's (her teen/20's). She started giggling and said, "All the boy bands-NSYNC, The Boys On The Block, Menudo..." Actually I think the 90's would have a good line up with Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam...but no, no group of singers will top these singers here on stage. They had a staying power that remains to this day.
Once a week we had an open stage at the local pub, free drinks for the performers. At the and of the evening, we did this song all together. Happy days.
Ron Wood said that he and Ringo were just watching the concert and the promoter just dragged them up there. There was another drum set up there already as Neil Diamond had his drummer playing along with Levon Helm during Neil D's song. Whose guitar was Ron playing? Don't know that one.

I saw this as a movie in a theater, great. Wish it would be played again on a big screen so I could share it with my children and grandchildren (makes me really old). But, all of them have experienced good music through me. Makes me happy.

I love every performance in this film. But not filming Richard Manuel for an entire verse where he’s singing lead isn’t just bad for fans of The Band, it’s just plain bad filmmaking.
Richard singing a verse might have been an impromptu moment. You can see on the complete, unedited film that he goes up to Dylan just before performing and ask him something.
A lot stuff was done on the fly and most of the material they managed to capture was a miracle because they had no shooting schedule or real plan so these things can be forgiven. In the wide shot you see some of the singers move to allow them to get a shot of Richard at the last stanza but it was too late. They do capture Ringo’s drum flourish at the the end of that verse and it’s awesome. I love Richard, maybe the most.

Robbie Robertson of the Band has died after a long illness, on Aug 9, 2023. He was 80. Guitarist-songwriter-singer, he worked extensively with Bob Dylan and Martin Scorsese. RIP.
Great performance! Many of the people on the stage are either gone or very old. Sad to see such talent disappear. We still have memories like this to look back on.
They say everything can be replaced They say every distance is not near So I remember every face Of every man who put me here I see my light come shining From the west down to the east Any day now, any day now I shall be released They say every man needs protection They say that every man must fall Yet I swear I see my reflection Somewhere so high above this wall I see my light come shining From the west down to the east Any day now, any day now I shall be released Now, yonder stands a man in this lonely crowd A man who swears he's not to blame All day long I hear him shouting so loud Just crying out that he was framed I see my light come shining From the west down to the east Any day now, any day now I shall be released 💙
Richard was pretty much ignored in the movie, but for a brief moment here we got to hear that beautiful voice of his. At least we got that. Rest in peace, Richard.
Snake Stabler I know! I'm trying to educate how wrong it is. Manuel sings a verse alone, and he doesn't get screen time once. It's the freaking grand finale of the show and they don't even display all of the band members?
What a monumental moment in music history...Martin Scorsese made one hell of a film...the sound and cinematography is just phenomenal for that time period!!
Rip Dear Robbie.. I was only six when this masterpiece was created but I have watched it 27 times since then. This Mark's the end of great music.Long live class of 76.May God welcome you into the gates of heaven. You are a young man now and your Mom and Levin have been waiting on you. my prayers for your family.
+MrDJCoulton and you could go on and on.... A show where everyone was over the top talented... What a show.. I've watched it about a hundred times in my life.
Such a great show. At the open stage in a pub long ago we used to play this song as the last one with everyone who had participated this night. Such good memories.
What a massive amount of talent on one stage! I'm pretty sure all of them are Rock & roll hall of famers now. I see a lot of comments thinking Clapton was singing the 2nd verse. That was Richard Manuel. Unmistakable beautiful voice!! Probably the best concert film ever done. One can only imagine what the after party was like! Yikes!!
no way man, Joni Mitchell easily ranks on this lineup. Most underrated performer in history, fabulous voice, terrific songwriter. Not everybody's cup of tea but definitely overlooked for no good reason. artistically better than almost all of these people.
Richard's verse is easily one of the greatest live vocal performances ever given. When some of the greatest talents of all time are looking around wondering "where the hell is that coming from?", you did good
Likely there never will be....I'm feeling damn glad to have gotten to grow older with SO many great artists, many still here.... it's been & still is a great run
I saw it in a walk in moovy the..ate..her when it first came out in the 70's. I had been a Band fan for a while. It was stupendous. I am glad you liked it, Tanner.
All the talent, all the legends on that stage at that time in their prime. Yet behind them at his piano sits Richard, the sweet, half broken, fallen angel. And for one gorgeous verse he owns all of it.
@@Pippie5555 I find this version of this great song fascinating. It's not the best version by a long shot - a bit too sloppy. But that verse where Richard takes it and all the giants step back in a clear sign of respect, is a beautiful moment.
I've returned to this performance countless times. It touches me in so many ways. As a full time musician myself, Robbie's words in the interview really gets to me. I can relate to that stare and the smile, there's nothing to do but to move forward and keep playing. It will be incredibly tough at times, but in the end it really is worth the effort and it will bring you unforgettable moments of adventure and friendship.

INCREDIBLE with Bob Dylan,, love that song. I shall be released.. my mantra.. but apparently it is taking longer than I thought.. I remember singing that in my 30s and here I am.. in my 60s. :) yup wow. and going down the list, Janis, Buddy Holly, Elvis.. and listing the people gone, I saw Janis Joplin too.. didn't get to see Elvis ..
My friend got the tickets to CSN for the six of us. I asked who the lead in group was and he said I don't no. The opening group was The Band. Of course was familiar who they were but when they were done I could have left without hearing Crosby Stills and Nash and still had more than my money's worth. I love these guys.
Bob Dylan is a genius for this. In “I shall be released” he says “I see my light come shining from the west down to the east. Any day now I shall be released.” the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, therefore he’s in the latter part of his life, turned towards the East, reflecting on the past as the sun sets behind him, which signifies the “light shining from the west down to the east”. Great stuff so much depth here.
When I was 21 years old (22 years ago), I spent a single day in Orleans Parish Prison, it was a case of wrong place wrong time/mistaken identity of which I was compensated with a settlement check a couple years later. Still it was one long scary day. When I woke up in the morning I saw the sun from the skylight shining on the west wall and at the end of the day it was shining on the east wall. This song was in my head the whole time and I always wondered if this is what Bob meant. Anyway 'I saw my light shine from the west down to the east' and that's what it means to me even if that's not what it meant to Mr. Zimmerman.
A number of years ago I was privilaged to be at the bedside of a fellow musician dying of cancer in a hospice in Dublin. She was surrounded by fellow musicians and friends from her life. We performed songs throughout the afternoon. Something truly magical happened that day I will never be able to explain nor fully understand. She had lost conciousness the day before. There was no prearranged set list. Someone would start a song and everyone would just join in. There were no gaps, no asking someone to go next it just happened. As we played, I noticed that patients from the hospice were being wheeled into the corridor, some into the room by nursing staff. As the music played, you could see changes in her life signs on the monitors. We knew she was listening and could hear. Those signs reached a peak and as this song was performed, they were at there highest. The signs drifted off as the song ended and she drifted off as this song came to an end. She played in a band, once upon a time, with Levon Helm of the band after they broke up. It was the most emotional and etherial experience of my life. I am tears writing this comment RIP Bev ❤
Ringo literally looks older back then than he does today. I mean, the guy is either Benjamin Button or he done found the fountain of youth. Me, I believe the latter. Peace!
Dylan is truly great. But the Band are every bit his peers. Did you know Dylan's first credited songwriting collaboration was with Richard Manuel? Did you know Clapton disbanded Cream after he heard The Band, and that at one point George Harrison quite the Beatles and went to hang out with The Band instead?
@@sambac2053 Eric Clapton did say he felt cream couldn't compare to the band BUT that was not the reason for disbanding cream. If you read his autobiography he had just got fed up with the whole supergroup thing; the touring and the infighting in the band. Every stop on the road he'd be calling management and saying I want to come home and they'd say just one more week . He also said that if he ginger and jack had been able to talk through their problems they may have lasted. @@davidmellish3295 . I saw Cream ,and Blind Faith, and another Clapton outing. I saw the Band, and I saw them with Dylan, and Dylan without them .I did read Clapton's autobiography. And several interviews, He went and hung out in Woodstock, wanting to join them. Robbie Robertson has talked about it too. Clapton also said when he heard them he decided the whole endless guitar solos thing was shallow, that he was embarrassed, and that what they were doing was real .
@@sambac2053 yes I'm not disagreeing with you that he said all that I was just saying that it wasn't like he heard the band then said that's it I'm ending cream. That may have been the straw that broke the camel's back but cream was on the rocks and breaking up anyway

Legendary and beautiful live version of this masterpiece. Bob Dylan is a genius and incomparable poet.
Hey, Rick Danko. Thank you for everything. You won't be forgotten.
They say everything can be replaced
They say every distance is not near
So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here
I see my light come shining
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released
They say every man needs protection
They say that every man must fall
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Somewhere so high above this wall
I see my light come shining
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released
Now, yonder stands a man in this lonely crowd
A man who swears he's not to blame
All day long I hear him shouting so loud
Just crying out that he was framed
I see my light come shining
From the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released
💙
Bob could have been replaced? Would have sounded a lot better without him! 🤓😂😎
They harmonized pretty well even with Joni Mitchell and her high pitched voice lol
Rest in peace Richard, gone way too soon.
@@Damn-Inlaw he wrote the song, so what can you do?
@TheMisterEAK my ass. Dylan wrote this song, it's his. And his vocals are the best on this live performance
Richard was pretty much ignored in the movie, but for a brief moment here we got to hear that beautiful voice of his. At least we got that. Rest in peace, Richard.
You can thank Robbie for that... Money hungry spotlight seeker
his part gives it soul
Snake Stabler I know! I'm trying to educate how wrong it is. Manuel sings a verse alone, and he doesn't get screen time once. It's the freaking grand finale of the show and they don't even display all of the band members?
I saw him singing.
He’s on Acadian driftwood also
The road took a lot of the greats, but you made it to 80. Rest in peace, Robbie. You are released.
Richard Manuel's voice is hauntingly beautiful here. So much depth.
I can listen to Lonesome Susie over and over again
Don't forget Rick danko. Also a great voice.
I thought the same thing......I am the biggest BAND fan ever and I found he never sang better than that one verse!
SAME AS RICK DANKO, IT JUST DONT GET ANY BETTER !!!
@@allandonnelly6926 Yup. Levon too. The Band had 3 lead singers!!
The Band war eine großartige Band, ich habe den Film im Osten gesehen, in Teltow ,war ein super Konzert
"The road has taken some of the great ones." I'm so glad I no longer romanticize the disease of addiction.
Amen
Lot of us as addicted to the lifestyle as the "stuff". Yeh me too ,took a while.
What a monumental moment in music history...Martin Scorsese made one hell of a film...the sound and cinematography is just phenomenal for that time period!!
I wish Richard Manuel sang the whole song. Love Bob Dylan, but Richard Manuel was meant to sing this one.
Personally I like Dylan voice & style on this one.
Snake Stabler both excellent
They were both incredible
I like bobs voice better on this one. Both are legends tho, its just that bob is untouchable.
I agree...but Bob wrote it, you have to give it to him. You could say without Bob, we may have never even known about the Band.
A truly historical moment...... that can never be brought back or repeated....
This is as close to heaven as you can get on this humble earth
No other group of rock stars will ever sound this good again.
They do up in rock n roll heaven... And Elvis is with them!!!
2:31 Neil Young is so high in this video it's a wonder they kept him from floating off the stage up to the ceiling. Anyway, what a moment!
and joni mitchell is dry as a stone
This it why i love young
Joni Mitchell, Ronnie, Ringo, Neil, Van, Dylan... jesus the talent on that stage
+MrDJCoulton and you could go on and on.... A show where everyone was over the top talented... What a show.. I've watched it about a hundred times in my life.
Levon.
mds24cu Dylan looked like Jesus in 1976 to be fair
thank you jesus, you done good.
You forget clapton
Thank You. Robbie. May God Be with You.🙏
Such a great show. At the open stage in a pub long ago we used to play this song as the last one with everyone who had participated this night. Such good memories.
I love watching smiling on Neil's face.
Neil always loves working with Bob.
Yeah that's great! I love Neil Diamond. And Neil Young too! x
Yeah he's havin a blast. It doesn't look like Joni trusts him though LOL.
Stuart I always thought she was just worried that chunk of coke from Helpless might hit her. Or she was just disgusted overall.
Check his nose
What a massive amount of talent on one stage! I'm pretty sure all of them are Rock & roll hall of famers now. I see a lot of comments thinking Clapton was singing the 2nd verse. That was Richard Manuel. Unmistakable beautiful voice!! Probably the best concert film ever done. One can only imagine what the after party was like! Yikes!!
I think it would have been awesome, I would have tried to pick up Dylan, it was hot 👍
I think it would have been awesome, I would have tried to pick up Dylan, it was hot 👍
love
This song will be played at my funeral. That I know.
no way man, Joni Mitchell easily ranks on this lineup. Most underrated performer in history, fabulous voice, terrific songwriter. Not everybody's cup of tea but definitely overlooked for no good reason. artistically better than almost all of these people.
RIP Richard Manuel. You were finally released from pain
Richard's verse is easily one of the greatest live vocal performances ever given. When some of the greatest talents of all time are looking around wondering "where the hell is that coming from?", you did good
thank you bob and friends for continue my life
THE Band, the last waltz, incredible music, incredible talent!!!!!! They just dont make them like that anymore!
Joni Mitchell said it best about today's 'music' - "There's no muse, just ick."
No they don't
Likely there never will be....I'm feeling damn glad to have gotten to grow older with SO many great artists, many still here.... it's been & still is a great run
They sure don’t one of the best bands ever
Very FEW at Best. There is NO Comparison to THE BAND - THAT'S 4Sure!!
This is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen
I saw it in a walk in moovy the..ate..her when it first came out in the 70's. I had been a Band fan for a while. It was stupendous. I am glad you liked it, Tanner.
neil young is stoked as fuck!
is this at neil youngs surprise birthday party?!
dude thought he was gonna have to go to a normal dinner and then all of a sudden mom rolls into discovery zone
loooool
When they sing Helpless you can see a white matter in his nose.
I think it's spelled "stoned"
All the talent, all the legends on that stage at that time in their prime. Yet behind them at his piano sits Richard, the sweet, half broken, fallen angel. And for one gorgeous verse he owns all of it.
When in this video? Please give the time?
@@Pippie5555 1:29
@@kenmckenzo9465 Thank you.
@@Pippie5555 I find this version of this great song fascinating. It's not the best version by a long shot - a bit too sloppy. But that verse where Richard takes it and all the giants step back in a clear sign of respect, is a beautiful moment.
@@kenmckenzo9465 I will listen to it again without looking at it :-D Because most of them look so lost and high on something...
Rip Richard Manuel!!! One of my all time favorites!!
I feel that man, musician myself too ✌
OMG, it's a Van Morrison sighting 😮and-- Neil Diamond for cryin' out loud!❤
I love how Neil Young looks like a fan who was pulled up on stage. Just the way he looks at Bob Dylan lol
Thank you Robbie and all the Band and Bob Dylan. RIP Robbie ❤
dose an old man good to see all these people from my youth together with so much positive energy
bruce levine yesss!
And, it does the same for an old lady!....
Sure Does Bruce - It Sure DOES!!
Makes feeling music today should not even be called music. Just inconceivable amount of talent on that stage.
Here, my fellows, is the epithome of rock and roll music.
Hendrik Visscher, Enschede Holland, 2 juli 1942, 16.35H in the gas chambre at Bernburg. Dear uncle since 2021 your name will remembered in the Netherlands . ❤️
God bless us, the talent where ever u look .... what a gig.
Watched this on TV with my beloved Brian. Seems like yesterday. Hope you are at peace. Love sent to you All 🙏
Hi Adrienne💐💐
Neil Young smiling...priceless
Gives me goosebumps every time, and how cool is Dylan's hat? Neill Young looks like he's bi-located from the Twilight Zone.
LOL! THAT'S GR8!!
Captain Sp ace was jockeying for a Joni romp.
Great music value for us
Go, Van, go! You deserve to be there. My main man, my inspiration from just a few streets away. I know that s along time ago... but you...I was never proud of being from Belfast, .. but George and you mucker. 'Fair Play' to you , my friend.
This is fantastic, but the multitude of faces Neil Young is pulling gives an entirely new dynamic 😂
RIP Robbie Robertson. That leaves Garth Hudson as the last surviving original member of The Band 😢
This second and third verse might be my fav singing ever
This song gave me hope at a very trying time when my son was incarcerated but he's still in when I hear it it makes me cry and still gives me hope
💙🙏🙏🙏💙 GBY 💙🙏🙏🙏💙
My friend got the tickets to CSN for the six of us. I asked who the lead in group was and he said I don't no. The opening group was The Band. Of course was familiar who they were but when they were done I could have left without hearing Crosby Stills and Nash and still had more than my money's worth. I love these guys.
I have to laugh that anyone could take the time to give THIS a thumbs down. Poor souls.
When youve done significant time in Prison you really feel this song.
I guess everyone feels this song in some way they can identify. ❤✌️
Simply amazing to me that in just over forty years we went from this unbelievable music and talent to what we have today.
So very sad.
What a collection of music royalty...real musicians...never see a line up like that again...simply awesome and the song gives you goose bumps.
This is the epitome of what music is all about right here...can't top it
What about Justin bieber he an icon at such a young age and has a lot of charisma. He is the new dylan
@@andrewhindley7548 Just no.
From the west UNTO the east is how it was written. Everybody gets it wrong.
@@mikeclifford9366 lol and then makes up something based on a misunderstanding and calls it genius pffff
Zimmerman.

you can perfectly hear "down"
@@lingux_yt Yep. Look up the lyrics. We can clearly see "Unto"...
A slow song sung with such energy and intensity that it goes by much too quickly. Just like life when it is well lived.
I been watching all these songs. It's crazy how good they are compared to crap today.
Lump on my throat. Seen this movie 100 times or more, and it always affects me. What talent I thank Sorese for making this concert history
Ringo literally looks older back then than he does today. I mean, the guy is either Benjamin Button or he done found the fountain of youth. Me, I believe the latter. Peace!
Ok, I cried when I heard it, I am crying today. RIP Robbie.
One of the best songs ever written not to mention the line up in this clip.
Hi Roxy💐💐
Fabulous and unique performance in the history of folk rock! With every star singing together one of Bob's most meaningful poem/songs!
It is TRULY BEAUTIFUL - & Unlike anything Else! I Will play this Album till the day I die.
Dylan is in a world of his own like always LEGEND no one even comes close
So cream was breaking up anyway nothing to do with the band but Eric did feel that the band were the best and he even had thoughts of joining them . Driving up to meet them in his head he was joining them he said
@@davidmellish3295 .
