- Lyrics:
I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead;
I just need some place where I can lay my head.
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, and "No!", was all he said.
(Chorus:)
Take a load off Fannie, take a load for free;
Take a load off Fannie, And (and) (and) you can put the load right on me.
I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide;
When I saw Carmen and the Devil walkin' side by side.
I said, "Hey, Carmen, come on, let's go downtown."
She said, "I gotta go, but m'friend can stick around."
(Chorus)
Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day.
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, woncha stay an' keep Anna Lee company?"
(Chorus)
Crazy Chester followed me, and he caught me in the fog.
He said, "I will fix your rags, if you'll take Jack, my dog."
I said, "Wait a minute, Chester, you know I'm a peaceful man."
He said, "That's okay, boy, won't you feed him when you can."
(Chorus)
Catch a Cannonball, now, t'take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time.
To get back to Miss Annie, you know she's the only one.
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone.
(Chorus)

Anybody that doesn't like this wasn't raised right.
YES
Truth
Some people don't have an ear for great music. They've been raised on less.
Or it simply isn't to their taste being a more logical explanation. The fucking shite some people will talk for a thumbs up is mind boggling.
@@paulbutler43 yeah. Not to their taste because they weren't raised right is logical enough.
Mavis Staples is one of the greatest voices ever. Smooth as silk and powerful as dynamite
I just love Pops
For sure. Her entire family had talent
And beautiful too!
And she’s still singing today
Movie is top 5 music
Could be the greatest live song ever recorded. It is a vocal masterpiece with flawless playing .
I wonder if they knew what they were creating.
@@MikK5 Of course they knew. If we knew it the minute we heard it, they knew it too.
I believe that Roger Waters called "Music from big Pink' the second most important album ever.
Will never be duplicated, the best
Definitely the greatest...when I hear Levon's voice it is like hearing the gospel
Pay attention people, this is what you call music. With the Staples singing it just oozes soul and the Band is right on point. A true classic.
"Listen, people. Hear what I say." :)

A combination of Mavis Staples and Levon Helm is like Christmas morning with unlimited presents..
enigmatic harmonies, even angelic in the American Songbook of songs.
You said it man!
Couldn't have said it better.
Levon Helm was an American treasure! You nailed it, friend!
And presence...
RIP Robbie, 08-09-2023, aged 80. One of the greatest rock songs ever written. When he played “The Weight” for Dylan for the first time, Bob said “you wrote that” letting Robbie know this was that good..Truly one of the great rock guitarist’s ever and just as great of song writer as well. With his death leaving Garth as the sole survivor of The Band..
THANKS Tccchamp5877, The Boys sure were generous with thier favorite singers LOVE the staples ALWAYS !!!! GO GARTH !!!! I’m trying to get my kids into this ,sent it to all 3 ! 🎉❤❤❤ ❤
I was only born in 75so didn't get to know these guy till twentys ...finest musicians I ever had the privilege to speculate on they're work as a band no pun intended not to mention in they're own individualism as solo artists ..timeless....thanks.. Levon ,Rick, Richard,Garth never will be replaced...
Oh damn I done forgot Mr Robbie Robertson...
dont forget RONNIE HAWKINS ,,he is alsso gone but not forgotten!!!!!!!!!!
Sheesh!
It's pretty evident that song was written by the guy from Arkansas playing drums and not the Canadian.
Miss Mavis and Levon on stage together…..Heaven on Earth ❤
Levon Helm was a national treasure. I cry every time I watch this.
that's why I watch the video of "Ophelia" ya just can't be sad when The Band is playin' Dixieland Jazz

This song always brings me back to the 70's when the Vietnam vet's were coming home. Much love appreciation and respect to them. Some gave all. All gave some.

And Rick Danko.
I love Danko's turn at the mic here. Just magic.
"If ya take ol' JACK, my dog" - Man, it's hard to make it through that.
This song was performed when entertainers could actually entertain.
Roger that, Gary...
The best version of this song. Love it
I was 17 year's old when I saw the Last Waltz now I'm 62 what a great. Movie and sound track
Me too!.
I'm 67when the world was great ireamber it well
I was 12 and still get goosebumps only thinking about the sensation sitting in that huge cinema and being mesmerized
This kind of music is gone forever.
Oh, please, let's hope not!
Some of us are trying to bring it back!
Then what’s the point?!
In my opinion Mavis was and is the best female singer ever. She put real soul in every song
Only 8000 views? This is one of the greatest moments in Rock and Roll.
pardon me sir - but don't you mean "Rock and Soul"? mavis coming in a close second to van the man as best singer in the film, danko playing that fretless bass with every fibre of his being and levon has to be one of the 'blackest' white guys ever... don't want any arguments here (especially about race) - just adding to your comment, man. you're totally right!
Paul Jacobson word.
I think I've watched this 8000 times 😉 never gets old.!!
Superb. Mavis rocks that wonderful voice.
To be fair there is another video which has significantly more views.
A little solace in a world gone mad.....thanks Levon....and Mavis....WOW
Still missing Richard Manuel 😢 😔 💔
Well put, couldn't have said it better myself.
Damn right.
👍Well said. ☮️
I absolutely agree, they were so I to the song it’s fantastic. Went to a Mavis concert in Australia about 2012/13 and it was fantastic but sadly she didn’t sing The Weight, great night though. And we still have this version from the Last Waltz movie.
Levon Helm is Fantastic singer! So underrated!
The Staple Singers, Mavis Staple, national treasures. The Band so deep, so true, so musical!
When Mavis comes in on the second verse it brings tears of joy to my eyes. What a song! What a band! What a woman!
just brilliant, every time - timeless
I love her song "Christmas Vacation." (For those who don't know, this is the song that plays over the opening credits of the 1989 Chevy Chase movie "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.")
Tears indeed,, thought it was just me... tearing up watching this...just glad to be here ✌🏼..
She's great no doubt.
I just try to hear back Aretha in this one.
Me too, man.
Levon Helm was soo damn great with his vocals! Very few singers put that much energy in their delivery like Levon. What a MAN!!!
Levon was painting his masterpiece!!"
One of my heroes.
RIP Robbie. This is one of the greatest songs in rock history, and this is the best performance of the song. I've loved "The Band" since their first album came out in 1968: "Music From Big Pink." Garth is now the only band member still alive. Thanks for the hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of enjoyment, listening to your incredible recordings.
Yes,this Band had Soul. Can we all come together as brothers & sisters.
RIP Robbie Robertson, Robbie Robertson was born July 5, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario. The son of a Jewish father and Mohawk mother, Jaime Robbie Robertson's first brush with live music came at the Six Nations Reservation, his mother's girlhood home; at the age of five, he also gained exposure to the country music of rural America. Not long after-ward, he began taking guitar lessons from a cousin, and gradually started composing his first songs. As time wore on, his musical interests evolved from country to big band to rock, and he eventually dropped out of school to pursue a career as a performer. A TORONTO MUSICAL LEGEND
Hell yes. Sit up and recognize kids. This is rock and roll at it's highest level
Oh I've recognized alright!

At 70 years of age, this is my all time favourite song, The Band and the Staple singers.
Mavis Staples, beautiful God-given voice.
I love that she mouths “that’s beautiful” at the very end.
My fourth grade teacher in 1969 turned the whole class on to the band, she use to play them in the classroom, god bless Ms. Pottieger.
Mark Nairn Ms. Pottieger sure could teach!
Mark Nairn That’s cool. My form teacher used to play us Johnny Cash. Proper education. ❤️🇬🇧
she sounds amazing
My 6th grade music teacher in 1988 was a beautiful Black woman who taught a classroom full of kids from Eastern Kenucky about the blues.
And jazz, and soul, and spirituals, and gospel, and poly rhythms, and thank you, Ms. Burnam, for kicking open new doors.
Mr. Pogger
Consider myself a professional music listener ;). This is one of the most perfect songs ever, ever put together. This version, I would stack it up against anything I've ever heard!
I reckon so am I. Been doing it for 60 odd years. I would have to agree most wholeheartedly with your sentiments. Absolutely phenomenal.
Perfection.
Listen a bit longer and you'll see were all getting better at listening. It's not like it used to be.That drummer can sing.
PERFECT
yes. perfect sound and the only message that counts,
Watching in 2021 after nearly 2 years of the world going to pot because of covid. It brings me great comfort to be able to escape to this absolute masterpiece. It truly HAS to be one of the greatest songs of all time, this version particularly always gets me. Levon really was a genius.
Too right, Levon and Mavis make this the best version ever. Peace from the UK.
Take a load of McLeish 😉🍻🎵💞🎶
Great song one of my favorites!
Not because of COVID, but because of dumb people manipulated by powerful people. But the bells of swift and deep justice are ringing, just like they were last time fascists tried to take our freedom. Judgement day is coming.
❤
Mavis Staples voice is truly under credited, in this history of music. Phenomenal on this recording
Its that little "uhnh" at the end of her verse that gets me every time.
@@lotsofciggies Yep, me too. I wish the camera had spent more time with the Staples.
Actually the only thing wrong with this performance is Mavis should have sung at least one more verse.
She came here to open for Dylan. Bob could've stayed home.
yes i get it @@johnwilkes6634
Does anyone else feel like they just can't hold back from singing along with this version?
Yes indeed. Levon would be proud.
When Pops finishes singing his verse, his daughter who is next to him, gives him a beautiful look of love.
50 years of consuming music like taking a breath and I still get speechless when I discover something that moves my soul and brings me to tears...
You took the words right out of my mouth-:)
I just discovered this.Incredible!
The greatest version of The Weight in history - the Band with Levon Helm plus the Staple Sisters performing a Southern Gospel/Folk Rock classic.

The BEST version of "The Weight" ever!
Yeah this is the finest version of any song I think I ever hard
Hard to disagree!
Watch the other favorites version, it's pretty good too.

I still like the original version. Has more of the Band rustic feel. This one sounds too smoothed out and sanitized. Still a great version.
Levon Helm has the most soothing voice! RIP brother, your music is missed!

That moment Robbie cues here in with the guitar nod 🤩

Some folks will never understand how unbelievable amazing this is
A musical treasure AND a double whammy here...

But you understand so you're special?
Pouring one out for Robbie today.
I'm 69 and The Band's songs still amaze me! Takes me back to when music meant something!
Thanks boys!!
How come tears run down my face when I listen to this song. So much wonderful talent with common purpose. Sing Beautifully. If the world could be like this.
Literally just finished listening and have dried tears on my cheek. Cheers 🍻
Fallen Angel showed Robbie to be a visionary. I grew up in Ontario just a few years after these guys, and as a budding keyboard player got to know some people who worked with them. I liked The Band but their nostalgia about the defeated South did not resonate with me.
Decades later, I am astonished by the beauty of the songs in the Big Pink album. Rick Danko remains my favorite singer in the group. His Canadian innocence when interpreting the stories behind the words brought to this moment of northern beauty. It is a story of existential sadness and loneliness, overshadowed by the brilliance of their playing. From their expression of defeat and loss in The Weight, we come to terms what awaits us all as we make our way through this vale of tears. Of course the Staples Singers got it right away!
How can you beat Levon, Mavis, and Pop Staples…true musical treasures!!
It actually makes me sad, quite so, that 535 people have listened to this, and decided to thumb it down. I am a metal head primarily, but mostly a fan of music and the soul it has. This performance almost always gives me chills.
Don't sweat it! Someone's gotta watch the CMA's.
No musical taste. Tin ears.
@@johnwilkes6634 - yea, I guess so. Also, some people are just so closed minded to music outside their preference. I say, if you close you eyes, and truly listen, the music will speak to you and heal your soul.

They don’t make them like this anymore. Just beautiful
One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. Their talent is immeasurable. Danko, Helm, Manuel, Robertson and Hudson. So talented.
Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins, was the crux of this band, he recently passed another great one gone
Robbie Robertson wrote one hell of a song in connection to the other songs from the album on which this was released and offered up biblical bits and pieces to the story. The song has been out for 53 years….unreal. The inclusivity of the different stylings is perfect for the piece. When Mavis sings with her buttered toffee voice or just throats a note I feel the goosebumps and adrenaline and I still wonder if I’m hearing what I’m definitely hearing. Her voice is difficult to define and must be heard! For me, she makes an incredibly special song even more special. It is a fun ride of a song and they all do it justice.
Feeling the same for a long time
Very sad for Mr. Robertson passed away
Not that it matters. But I'm a black guy. This is the ultimate union of Folk and Gospel. BRILLIANT!!
The band.
This song fits just as well downtown as it does in some farm field. I hope that everyone of us has at least a little soul and a little down home redneck in us.

Totally incredible and it got really beyond incredible when Danko appeared out of the fog jiving and bouching around like a gift from heaven
Man , that second verse when Mavis comes in....my goosebumps get goosebumps on their goosebumps! Stunning.
What a great band and Levon Helm was such a great humble man! I had the honor and pleasure to meet Levon and Garth. My brother and I were walking into the show a bit after most of the crowd had already entered and we see Mr. Helm and Mr. Hudson pull up in front of the concert hall from about a hundred yards away, we waved and kinda yelled out hi guys just hoping for a wave back and Mr Helm just turned direction and came running up to us with Mr Hudson kinda following behind. Levon held his hand out...shook our hands and we said it was great to meet you, we love your music and he hung out for a few minutes and made some small talk and then says I gotta go and actually it is so nice to meet you. Mr Hudson a bit shyer says hi too and they just bee lined inside...We walked in took our seats and Levon ran on the stage 30 seconds later...and started up like the pro he was. Levon was the real deal!
