- It's been 15 years since my good friend Devin Olsen first taught me how to Euro Nymph. In this video I return to the exact river where he first showed me the ropes. Is this technique still viable, has it improved with time, or was it simply a phase that probably should go away? Join me for a day on the water as we dig into Euro Nymphing and the river where I first came to experience it.

I had a similar experience to you. I fished my river last year, caught 3 fish throughout the whole year. Went this past week after starting euro nymphing. Caught more fish in a single day than I did all of last year

I’ve really enjoyed euro nymphing. One day on the Logan I fished a single red dart all afternoon catching four species from the same spot.

Awesome! Your description of how euronymphing changed your flyfishing is similar to mine, except I was influenced by former Team USA Flyfishing member Norm Maktima here in NM. It has been a huge game changer for me. Just before runoff started I went fishing with a buddy who was using a standard indicator rig instead of his euronymph rig and he got skunked. I certainly did not. LOL!
That’s awesome! Norm is such a great fisherman. Very cool! And maybe your buddy will come around after seeing you work the river in a way that he probably wasn’t able to 😁

I started Euro Nymphing with a cheap Echo Carbon XL Euro rod, self-taught with the Dynamic Nymphing book. I used to catch 1 to 2 fish per outing. Now I catch between 6 to 10 every outing and bigger trout. I can attest the best way to catch numbers and quality of fish. Even my friend is buying a Euro rod after seeing me catch so much trout.

Euro nymphing is great for people getting started and want to learn how to fly fish. Once you learn how to fly fish you should just be tight lining so you can use other techniques with the same rod. I can tight. Line, streamer and dry fly fish with the same set up.

I catch 2x more fish with a splitshot rig, but I have (tried to) euro nymph way more. I probably just suck, my issue isn't one that more practice can fix, my hands and arms tremble due to some stuff that happened to me while serving in the US Army Infantry, and I'm certain that the shaking transfers to the flies.
Sincerely thank you for your service! There is a good chance that any shake in your arm is being transferred to the flies. That could be the issue, but great job to give it a solid effort. During the Summer months you could throw a dry dropper on a Euro rig. That would absolutly crush it depending on where you fish. The dry fly would absorb some of the movement. Just a thought, have a great night!
Great videos as always. I have a question for you as I have been learning the tight line method. Give me your thoughts on euro nymphing but adding a drop shot at the bottom so as to have the split shot bounce the bottom instead of your fly? Seems very logical for not only hanging up flies on the bottom but to also present the flies slightly above the fish. Just curious of your thoughts as an expert. Thanks my friend. That’s an excellent question. You most certainly can do this, and some anglers prefer it. In most situations I don’t use a drop shot method when Euro Nymphing (actually under an indicator I do almost exclusively and it works very well). One of my very good friend does quite a bit and has found great results on a Euro leader setup so I know it can be productive.
My opinion is that unless I need extra weight I prefer to let my flies do the job. First of all, one less item on my leader to affect my drift. Secondly, if I have the weight of my flies adjusted correctly they aren’t hanging up on the bottom very often. They are near the bottom a lot, but not dragging, and not hanging up u less the river is particularly snaggy. I don’t find it necessary in most situations, except on very large rivers. But that’s just my opinion 👍

Can someone explain the difference in spin fishing and euro fishing. Besides the reels. What is the difference.
All you had to say is that you prefer bobber fishing 😉 I stopped giving thought-out responses to people only looking to stir the pot. Honestly, if chucking bobbers is your thing, that’s cool…
@@GilbertRowley Not stirring a pot at all. My opinion is if your going to "Fly Fish" you should be using fly line and casting that fly line. Euro to me is spin fishing. But like everything else, to each there own. I do enjoy your vids though.
@@dankochanek8056I appreciate it Dan! And honestly fly fishing can be defined in many ways. For example, big articulated streamers are very heavy when wet and undoubtedly pull the leader and line forward when casting much like a spinner or metal lure. So does an indicator rig with split shot, pulls the leader and line forward to some degree as well… so by your definition neither can be classified fully as fly fishing either… maybe a hybrid, but not true fly fishing.
Furthermore, I can cast an unweighted dry fly on my Euro leader, but that fact is never taken into consideration.
And one more illustration. When fishing single dry flies I use an industry standard 14’ presentation tapered leader that anyone can buy at any fly shop. I then add 6-8 feet of tippet to my leader. Total length 20-22’ most days. Well, the other day I was working upstream when a 20” brown appeared tight to the bank 18’ in front of me. I starred at him and thought “I’d cast to that fish… but I wouldn’t have any fly line out my rod tip, so according to Dan and others it wouldn’t actually be fly fishing since no line would be used while making the cast, only leader…” So I decided not to try to catch that fish for the sake of fly fishing definitions.
Of course that logic would just be silly. So define it as you would like, and I’ll do the same. In my opinion, if catching fish enhances your experience on the water, Euro Nymphing is a great fly fishing technique (yep I said it), and will help inspire you to want to get outside more often. @@GilbertRowleyI euro’d it a bit a few years ago and I caught fish and I understand that it oftentimes outfishes other methods in the right type of water. But I didn’t enjoy the actual fishing/casting as much as dry dropper or even indicator. I approximate it with a 9’9” 4wt that I use for dry dropper. I’ll use ~4’ or so between dry and my nymphs with a ~18” piece of sighter below the dry, which I can hold above the water and focus on the sighter when fishing close. I know this is not really euro due to the connectivity, etc. But it has great flexibility since I’ve got my WF fly line there to switch to conventional dry, dry dropper, indicator. After 40 years of FF, I can’t kick the fly line addiction!! LOL!!
Boring fish... Whole american river filled with that kind of fish ..ehh
