I'm 74 and I've been doing the same thing for over 30 years so I can appreciate all the research you put into the trial and error. The drop rate gadget you made is pure genius ! ! ! Be careful what friends you make flies for they'll want to see every fly you tie for them tested in the tank . And people thought I was crazy when I was building my tank , HA the jokes on them there are two of us crazies out here ! ! !
@@DavidSmigas that’s awesome David! I was sure that there was someone else out there as crazy as I am. I even put inch marks on my tank so I could calculate my drop time in feet per second if I wanted to. It’s also very eye opening to look at sink rate with tippet attached. Along with different entry angles. All of these little things can make a difference when trying to choose the right fly for a given situation. I appreciate the kind words and thanks for watching.
@@brooktoriverflyfishing I was wondering about the numbers on the tank , like I said pure genius when used with the drop gadget. I may be older and have been doing this longer but you're way ahead of me in experimentation and advancing knowledge in the fly tying world. I'm a fan !
@@DavidSmigas thanks again. I like coming up with simple solutions to complex problems. There are several other videos on my channel where I solve common fly fishing problems using unconventional methods. One with a hairclip to solve tangled tag flies and one with arrow pullers to get stuck fly rods apart. Feel free to check them out and subscribe if you want to see more videos like these.
@@lostwatersflyfishing I have learned a lot from watching my bugs underwater. Certain materials have more movement than others but it’s not always obvious when they are dry. Thanks for watching.
@@sigurdurmarolafsson4183 thank you! I basically tried to reverse engineer the commercial fly testing tank but on a larger scale. And I would love to come fish in Iceland sometime! It looks amazing.
@@brooktoriverflyfishing Yeah, we love fishing too, especially Northeast Indians; these are Indians from the Hills and Mountain sides. I am from Meghalaya, India. Kindly check that out.
Totally rad bruh! Big mahalo! There are gradations on the side of the tank, is that in inches? I am currently on the hunt for a tank on FB market place. Appreciate you bruh!!!!
Thanks man. I put those inch marks on there to help figure out the sink rates for different flies. The tank is roughly a foot deep when filled all the way to the top. With a little math I can figure out how far it sinks per second.

I honestly have never tested my flys before getting to the river but after seeing this I am considering doing the same. Great idea!
