Brook to River Fly Fishing

Добавлен 18 сен 2011
Hi there, welcome to Brook to River Fly Fishing! My name is Eric and I absolutely love fly fishing! Moving water has always mesmerized me and drawn me to it. The goal of this channel is help anglers find more success on the water by simplifying some of the more technical aspects of fly fishing (especially euro nymphing.) I am passionate about learning new fly fishing techniques and then sharing them with others. Teaching Elementary PE is my "real job" but catching fish, being outside and going on adventures are how I like to spend my free time. Come join me on my fly fishing journey and there is a good chance you will learn something useful. Tight lines everyone!
How to tie the Euro Jigged Leech in Olive [More Durable Version]
In the wintertime, the Olive Jigged Leech flat out crushes trout. This fly is loaded with movement, sinks fast and drives lethargic trout crazy! Plus it works just as well in bright sunlight as it does when it's overcast. Grab your eggnog, turn on the fireplace and tie a few. There are fish to catch when the holidays are over!

Euro Nymphing Lots of Trout on Public Water
I'm from Virginia, but I live in Ohio now. Great video! I use peg beads and to be extra blasphemous I use split shot with my euro setup as well.
@@owensmith8501 dude. Same. Split shot is a must when fishing unweighted egg patterns in heavy current. Last year I fished a really deep run for steelhead and I knew there was fish in there but I couldn’t get deep enough. I kept adding on split shot at a time until I finally ticked the bottom with 4 of them on there. Banged five steelhead in a row as soon as I was deep enough. Getting the weight right is key. Thanks for watching!
Great video Eric. I live in NE Ohio. If you make it back up here this season maybe we can hit the rivers together!
@@adamhall9200 thanks for the offer man. I appreciate it. I rarely ever get back up during steelhead season. I wish I had more chances to chase them but I’m glad I at least get one per year most years.
Great video in tough conditions, funny thing I met Seth fishing for trout a few times in the last year...didn't make a steelhead trip yet but tightlined a few kings in NY back in September...wet wading 😂😅
@@johndelaney8405 now that sounds like fun! Thanks for watching.
Glad you get out for some action at least once a year. We are spoiled with all the fishing opportunities here in Western New York. 😊
@@1WilliamsBrian I would love to fish up there sometime. I’m going out tomorrow for some trout which is still awesome but those steelhead are legit.
Electric heated socks - a must for me!
That’s a good idea. Especially while steelheading!
Hey Eric What rod and reel combo do you use? Thanks Eric
@@fabios35076 hi there. It depends on the size water that I’m fishing. In this video I’m fishing a Diamondback 10’10” 2wt. The reel is a Redington tilt. I fish this setup on medium to larger water. I have a 10’ 2wt DB that I fish on smaller creek and streams. I use a Galvan GEN 3.5 with this setup since it is lighter and doesn’t need as much weight to balance. When steelheading I use a DB 10” 10” 6wt and the same tilt but with more weights in it. Hope this is helpful.
@brooktoriverflyfishing Thanks Fpr quci reply . I'm actually looking At The DB 6wt Also for steel heading Seeing alot of solid reviews Is there anything Negative you dont like about your 6wt?,
@ it’s a great stick. You can see it in action in some knarly conditions here. I caught 25 in one day last year on it and a tilt reel. I only get to steelhead fish for Erie steel one day a year so I gotta make it count. And no, there are no glaring weaknesses that I see with it. ruclips.net/video/eyhhk1kklG0/видео.htmlsi=m5nYPmQczxpafa_I
@brooktoriverflyfishing Thanks Eric, how do you add weight to your reel to balance? Checking video out now!!
@ the empty weight of the tilt is 5.7 oz. There are also three 1oz weights that you can add separately so the total weight is 8.7 without fly line or backing. I fish it with 1 weight on my 10’10” 2wt and 2 weights or 1 weight but moved farther back with my 6wt 10’ 10”. I Haven’t found a scenario yet where I needed all three weights. Please consider subscribing if you enjoy this type of content and technical stuff. I am also shooting a steelhead rigging video that covers lots of technical aspects of rigging and gear set up. Hope to have it out by the end of next week if all goes well.
Hardcore! Love it, Eric!
Thanks Cory. I only know one way to fish and that’s all in. I don’t like doing anything halfway.
hey eric it’s greg. love this tie, simple and fast. guide fly. i bet black with a silver bead would kill it
@@gtmrbs6066 thanks Greg. It’s is quite an easy tie and I bet you are right about the black/silver. I have found that to be a great color combo on several other jig streamers I have tied.

@@Thefishyveteran thanks! It was a blast. Wish I got to go more than once a year but I try to make the best of my one day I do get.
Nice effective pattern. I tie mine in a few different colors that all seem to work.
Nice. I have them in white, black, and rust as well but honestly the olive works so well I never fish the others. What other colors do you have success with?
White, black and brown along with olive. I tie mine size 14

Wow, this is really great!! Thank you for providing the links and explaining everything you did!!
@@davidchao1 hi David. You are welcome! I’m glad you found it helpful.
Why would someone give a s*** what you use to fly fish with? 😂
In the fly fishing industry there are lots of opinions about what is “fly fishing” vs what is not. People are entitled to their opinions and I try to be respectful of them while still fishing how I like. Many times people feel very strongly about these issues and friendships have been lost over this type of thing. In my videos I try to show people what works for me while letting them make their own decisions about how they fish. Thanks for watching.
@ woww that’s corny but I can see that being a thing. These days ppl will divide over ANYTHING. Only thing I care about is fisherman keeping fisheries clean, and no POACHING.
good things happen with small flies.............well done
Amen to that. The longer I fly fish the smaller bugs I fish on a consistent basis.
Great Vid Thanks For Sharing! I was wondering why the Bead and not.your blob?
Thank you I’m glad you liked it. No particular reason really. I sometimes fish the blob if beads aren’t working bc the blob is not something they see everyday. Sometimes just a little difference in a pattern is enough to gain their interest. I started with a bead and caught 3 or 4 on it but I did fish the blob some too. I missed a couple on it but I fished it more toward the end when there was a ton of ice in the water so it was harder to register takes. I actually tied some size 10 blobs with 5.5mm beads in preparation for this trip and expecting to fish the fast deep water. As you know most of the fish were in pretty shallow water this time. I did put one on at the end to try to punch through all the ice and even that couldn’t get through. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful! fly fishing in the snow is underrated! good job!
@@headfakez I agree. It’s so peaceful. Thanks for watching.
@@brooktoriverflyfishing happy fishing and holiday!
What gloves are you wearing. I'm obsessed with fingerless wool gloves for fly fishing.
Yep. That’s what they were. Fingerless rag wool gloves. Cost me like $12 and I’ve used them for 10 years. Keep my hands warm even when wet. Plus I keep handwarmers in my pockets for when my fingers get cold. Honestly the only part of me that was consistently cold were my toes. I’m planning on doing another steelheading video on cold weather preparations and rigging. I’ll talk about the gloves in that one more.
Hey friend I subscribed great video still learning how to steal head fish stay connected friend 👍👍
@@twopassionsfishing386 thanks buddy! I’m still learning too. I don’t get to do it enough to have it all figured out but it sure is fun trying.
@@twopassionsfishing386 I am planning on doing another steelhead video soon where I talk about how I rig for them and my preparations for dealing with the cold. That one may be of interest to you.
Great work with this vid and thinking out loud. I am constantly trying to pinpoint my strategy and technique when on the stream. If they are that shallow try throwing straight up at them with a unweighted nymph. I tie some flymphs and dead drift em. I got a visual on my fly most of the time. If I can spot em all the better.
@@patrickmcphee770 thanks Patrick. Solving the puzzle is one of my favorite parts of fly fishing. It’s so rewarding when you figure it out. This is the first time I have found them that shallow and out of the current. Usually if they are shallow they are in the current and moving up river but bc of the water temps it was different this time. Only having one day a year makes it extra challenging and rewarding. Tight lines!
Was out there on OH tribs and Elk the same time you were. Nice to see others are addicted as much as we are and braving the crap conditions.

@@JRS94-m7q thanks for watching. It was so much fun and a day I won’t soon forget.
My home river is a smaller branch to the main river...brother in laws place. Has to be best at 300-400 cfs, but i can manage the small branch at 700 if i have to. It was at 700 when i left, hour later walking down to the water it was over 1700...in one hour! Turned around and blew some money at the fly shop. And yeah peg beads are tits i use them on my spinning, centerpin and fly rod
Wow. That went up quick! No reason to fish dangerous water, fly shop sounds like a good choice.
Damn there were that many people up there fishing in that
Haha. There were more at the beginning of the day. Most cleared out by 9:30. My buddy had to leave early due to a prior commitment. Not too many as crazy as me I guess. Only one other car there when I left. Roads were a mess on the way out.

@@downandout6670 thanks buddy. I some ideas in the pipeline. A few of them are tying videos. A killer winter pattern and another one for springtime. Stay tuned :-)
Rain and melting snow have blown out the creeks.
Yeah I hear some places in Erie had like 50”+ of snow since then. That’s insane. On a positive note, you should have water all winter now probably.
Don’t think anything beats fishing in a blizzard! Big steel love those big flakes!
@@Thesteelheadaddiction I agree. When I’m steelheading, I want all the bad weather!
@ bad weather or stable conditions. Nothing in between 😂
Great video. I too live in Va. (Richmond) and try to make that drive to Erie several times each year for those awesome fish. However, 59 inches of snow put last weeks planned trip on hold. Steelhead on the Euro setup is my preferred method for sure.
@@fredmurray6190 yeah it’s the first time all year they have had water. They should be set for awhile now. Haha. Last year I had better conditions and landed 25. The year before was 17. Before I started tightlining for them I was thrilled with 1 or 2 in a day. It’s amazing how effective it is.
@@brooktoriverflyfishing I used to drift fish (same as this but with tackle) in clear PNW creeks. It was amazing watching beads (Corkies back then) drift a couple inches over their head and they wouldn't budge. Basically had to float it right into their mouth sometimes. So as close to bottom as possible was key, which is what euro nymphing also seems to do. Just lose a ton of gear.
Great vid I’m in Pittsburgh your lucky to be up there last week! I wouldn’t dare to make the drive. Hope you enjoyed the PA water! You talked about having issue seeing you sighter. Draw/paint on with a sharpie or Scientific Anglers Indicator pen a 2/3 inch black section at the change in your bi color section. I have no idea what it works. But my eyes pick up on it noticeably faster than if I don’t have that black section.
Thanks for watching and the tip. I actually have a black paint marker I just haven’t tried it yet. I have used some tri color Cortland sighter that had black in it for trout but I didn’t have it in heavy enough diameter for steelhead.
@ yeah give it a shot pick up some 2X or whatever. I just couldn’t believe on my friend showed me. I picked up his cider from 10 times further away than mine even was. Also awesome to see more guys euroing for steelhead. Just started this year with you same DB 10 10 6wt love it. You plan on getting the 7wt?
@ nah. I don’t use my steelhead rod often enough to spend that kind of money on it. I bought my current rod used for $300. Was a great find.
Without giving the spot away, is this an Erie trib that is in NY? I did a lot of exploring Erie this year. Just trying to build my knowledge of the area. Trying to find the parking for that trib, since I have not fished it yet.
The three buddies I go with like fishing 16, but after this years experience on 16, we rather walk and distance ourselves from people. My buddy caught a 21” brown on 16 and released it, the next day (Saturday) there were groups of unethical snaggers, and his Brown was on one of the stringers. It really hit us all hard that there are people that do this. Many of the sportsman in Erie are cool people tho.
This is in Pa on an Erie trib. Elk.
Yeah I can’t stand when people tear up a resource for their own gain like that. Makes me sick. Thanks for watching!
Not smart if you are not prepared to spend the night stranded on the interstate the snow event that weekend was epic and people got hurt trying to travel through that area.
