  • Trout LOVE pocket water...when the CONDITIONS are RIGHT! But WHAT CONDITIONS should you look for? EURO NYMPHING is the BEST way to catch fish in pocket water. SHORT DRIFTS, heavy bugs, DROP SHOT, accurate casts, and AGRESSIVE WADING a the keys to catching fish in these churning waters. Indicators, sloppy casts, and long drifts don't work here very often. In this Brook to River Fly Fishing video I will show you lots of ways to be successful in Pocket Water; Including the DROP SHOT technique.

Thanks Cory. It was a good day. Been back since then and caught three bruisers. Video coming on that one in a few weeks.

Hi, very interesting... but I had to find a converter to convert degrees fahrenheit to celsius each time you talk about T° 😅
If T° is an indicator, many other parameters come into play, such as the flow of the river, the drop or rise in air temperature, atmospheric pressure, weather, light, the moon, etc etc, and of course the mood of the Trout and the fisherman 🤫

Yes. For sure there are other factors. But for me, I start with the temperature. Low flows make some pockets too shallow for fish to hold safely and so on.

I tightline a drop shot nymph rig a fair bit in Scotland.I tend to find if you go higher diameter on your main tippet it keeps tangling down.Something like 0.17mm Flourocarbon or maxima ultragreen. Something slightly stiffer helps i find. The split shot gets your flies down.Euronymphing approach with 6 or 7X tippets equally tangle mania with drop shot rigs.Like your videos (keep them coming)

Ohhhh! I like that idea! That way one is stiffer and one is smaller with more movement. I’m trying that next time. Thanks!

Also seems like it would make untangling a little easier if it does happen since one will be a little stiffer while the other should unwrap easily.

@@brooktoriverflyfishing Kelly Galloup's rotating dropper with the perfect loop I fond works well for keeping tangles down. But I use a fo8 loop dropper.I can tie a fo8 loop much faster with my forceps than a Perfection loop.

Sure did! One body checked me on the shoulder too around 11 minutes or so. The wild Rainbows at this river fight super hard and love to jump. I’ve been fish slapped in the face by a big one on a different trip to this river. Wakes you right up. Haha

Not great clipping tippet and leader material in the water. I hear your point about tying on the spot but no need to toss all that line in the water

Fair point, thanks for the reminder. I did wrap up the long tangled piece and put it in my vest in between shots. However, the short pieces, when I was cleaning up the ends for the knot, fell in the water. I can always be more careful. Thanks.
