- Best Summer Fertilizer for Cool Season Lawns
There's a lot of summer fertilizers out there, but you have you considered Yard Mastery's 7-0-20 Stress Blend (with Bio-Nite™)? 7% slow release Nitrogen will not burn your turf, 20% Potassium is everything you need to nurse a stressed turf through the summer heat and drought, not to mention a full complement of micros, 3% iron for color and finally Bio-Nite. This video discusses the product, shows the granular constituents and reveals the turf one-week after application.
There are many comparable products to the ones I'm currently using. Please make your own decision and ONLY apply in accordance with the manufactures instructions and local regulations. You are responsible for what you apply.

Lawn is looking fantastic Russ! nice work as always.
Thanks Allyn! Always a treat to see your comments and appreciate the support.
Great job Russ! I applied stress blend in early June and the results were fabulous. Applied again last weekend and the results are great once again. Lawn has never looked this good in the heat of summer
What state you from? would love to see your progress. I'm also from Jersey just a little more south than Russ. Let's hook up on instgram. SuperTA329 instagram.
@@SuperTA329 I'm in northern Illinois (Chicago area) I have a channel with a video on the stress blend app that was uploaded a few weeks ago
Potassium surely plays a roll. I've seen much better heat tolerance with the higher potassium ferts, may also be attributable to the continued use of bio-stims.
Just got mine down rain is coming tomorrow can't wait to see how it dose. I bought the 18 lb bag and my yard is roughly 2k so I can get 3 apps out of one bag
I like the high K and believe it really sustained my turf through summer heat. My apps so far this year we’re a Leacock Starter, YM Flagship. I’ll definitely be moving onto Summer Stress shortly.
Thanks for sharing, hope it performs well for you. It’s low N for summer so safe to put it out every 4-5 weeks.
Russ, great video! And the lawn is looking amazing! Nice job!
Thanks Dino appreciate you checking out the video. Cool Blue seed is doing well in the heat, with all the Hydretain, potassium and biostims treatments.
@@LawnJourneys Awesome!
Looking good ! Threw down some FREEDOM on 7/4 here in Bucks Co. I’m not cutting until Monday because of this heat. It’s 5+ inches now. I’m hoping the long blades help shade the soil thru the heat. It seems to be working so far ( no dormancy ) yet. Non-irrigated with Hydretain. When I do cut, it’s going to kick my butt for sure. Double cut and p/u clippings. I usually side discharge. Thanks for your videos.
Always good to hear from you Mike! I haven't tried Freedom yet, maybe soon. Yes the heat is pretty brutal, especially today but looks like we may all be getting a monsoon. Long grass surely has to help keep some moisture in the crown and protect the crowns. Maybe just take 1-1/2" off with the cut and keep it high. I'm not cutting short either but not as tall as you are right now. Good luck with it and enjoy the summer.
Put the stress belnd down a week ago and its helped the lawn. Thanks for the content.
Thanks Scott, I like the video process so its something fun to do while I carry out my lawn obsession. Definetely stay with some higher Pot ferts for the summer.
Putting mine down this weekend Russ! Curious to see the result in a few weeks I normally didnt put anything down in July and August.
Thanks Jayme. It definetely resulted in a consistent green (lighter side) but the grass has held up in the 90+ days we've had lately. My grass used to check out. Could be combo of high Pot, bio-stims. I only irrigate about 3 times a week 1/2" each time. With that said we've had a few bouts of rain here and there. Let me know how your lawn fares, you can't go wrong with throwing down high Potassium.
Hey Russ,
Hope all is well in NJ.
I’m going back and forth between this product and Lawn Lux 7-0-7. Price difference so sure.
Year later, will you use Stress Blend again?
Thurston: I will be using Summer Stress again, probably July and August, I think the high % of K helped. With that said I also treated the lawn with Hydretain and will also repeat this summer. Let me know what you think of the Lawnbox products, something new to me.
Looking good. I have been doing the same minus Yardmastery. DCM is also a great fert and the bioadvanced Lawn root moisturizer is equal to Hydretain. on clearance for $4.99 at lowes. I will pick up and mail to you if interested. They have slow mow also $4.99 ..incredible deal. Let me know if interested .
Thanks again and so nice of you to offer. I'll check my local lowes this weekend, message you in INsta to say which one. That is a great price for Lawn Root Moisturizer and I would like to put out a second round by the end of July.
I'd also pick up the slow mow, thought of trying it if I take a vacation week away.
@SuperTA329 Thanks for your post! After stumbling across your comment, I was able to find a bunch of the Bioadvanced Lawn Root Moisturizer at a Lowe's store near me in West Windsor, NJ for $4.99 each. I had great success using it earlier this summer so I stocked up. Each bottle is comparable to the 32oz Hydretain spray bottle which goes for $35 each, so it's a great deal indeed.
I thought phosphorus was illegal in NJ when not using on new growth?
Steve: You can use Phos Fert if your seeding or if soil test demonstrates low Phos. Good question.

@@LawnJourneys Thanks for providing the info. Appreciate it.
Is this an organic fertilizer and do I have to worry about over applying?
Not organic but it has a combo of slow and fast release N. With that said, if you apply according to instructions you'll have no problem. Figure out your square footage in 1000 ft2, weigh out the product for that area and apply. With that said the spreader settings on the bag cover numerous spreaders and are fairly accurate, you should be good just following those settings. Its not hard and your turf should respond to this or any other quality fertilizer.
@@LawnJourneys Thank you, I already applied one app of this product in my yard is 6250 ft.² so I should be able to get two applications out of one bag.
I was just hoping to get another app in before winter but it might be cutting it kind of close probably within about six weeks apart?
Not sure if that was too much?
@@greg41819 Nit sure where your located. I’m in Jersey. I’ll fert again in November I usually do my last cut early December. Law keeps growing. 😆
@@greg41819 If it’s not going dormant I would push it again. I’ll be doing another fert in early November
Glad you all are getting rain, so far this year we have too. Excellent information as always, love how you always show the results. Looks great and green.
Appreciate the comment. Yes, I delay the video and wait a week to record state of the lawn. I like to see everything in one video to. 94 degrees here today, storms are coming. Its brutal outside. Be good.
I would describe but I had to get off of unsubscribe you because that common
Put on your glasses and try again.
Just documenting my year in the lawn. Thanks for stopping to check it out, hope your season is good.
