    In this video I continue with installing my cedar board on board fence. Last video I extended each steel post by welding on an extension, then demoing the old fence, and installing the stringers. This week I start by adding a cedar top cap then install board on board pickets on all three sides. I end the video by adding trim to the outside of the fence to give it a clean finished look. Stay tuned for part three where I build cedar boxes to hide the steel posts, add trim to pretty the boxes up, as well as build a gate for the fence.

    I used to install fences in my younger days and we prided ourselves on clean straight lines. This fence has some clean straight lines!! I thought at first you were going with a shadow box but this is way better. Looks great and provides total privacy. Plus your home equity just went up! Congrats! I look forward to next weeks video.

    I've found that flipping the spacer over between each picket (switch the top and bottom) will prevent a slight error in the spacer from accumulating as you progress. This way, if the sides of your spacer are not perfectly parallel, the error corrects itself with each board instead of adding up and leading to noticeably unplumb condition that requires you to "cheat" one of the pickets every so often. That is a very nice fence.

      Why wouldn't she use a spacer with parallel dimensions on both ends ? The fact that they're going out of plumb is from the milling of the boards. Have you ever seen a 2x6 with 5.25 on one end and 5.5 on the other ? Happens all the time. Even with trim. Im sure majority of them are 5 1/2 but things just aren't that prefect in the real world to have every one be the exact same. I'm sure some were even 5 5/8 and 5 3/4 Has absolutely nothing to do with the spacer. Lumber shrinks and expands and they get shifted around in the milling process. I'm sure she knows how to rip a board down.

    That's a really nice fence, April. Having steel poles to start with was nice, but going through the extra trouble to weld extensions on the top to make sure they were all the same length really made the difference in appearance. Should be a fence that lasts many years I'd think.

    Beautiful fence. One note though, when you put in place the top board, you should not put the nail through the top board and the one below. When one board shrinks it will pull and rip open the nail hole on the one below causing it to rot. instead the top board should be nailed directly in to the 'rail' below the back board. Hope this makes sense, English is not my native language.... The point is that every board should be able to shrink and expand freely.

    I made a spacer too out of a ripped down 2x4 for ours, but I screwed the torpedo level to the board so I could just check level at the same time :-)

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  7 лет назад

      If the level is attached to the spacer how did you butt the next picket up to it? Or did you include the width of the level in the spacer width?

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  7 лет назад +1

      Oh I missed the 2x4 part...so it's deeper than the picket. Very good idea!!

    • @NGinuity
      @NGinuity 7 лет назад +3

      A torpedo level is pretty small so it was well within the width of the spacer. I used my big level to vertically level the spacer, then I leveled the torpedo level on the spacer and screwed it down so that the spacer edge was parallel to it. The spacer was a 2x4 that had a proper jointed/ripped set of edges so they were parallel. So, I basically manufactured a level that was the width of the spacer. It worked extremely well and I've loaned it out to a few of my friends now (In fact, one of them has not given it back yet). I sure did say the word "level" a lot there! :-)

    • @NGinuity
      @NGinuity 7 лет назад

      Yeah, it was pretty cheap, too. Just a scrap 2x4 and a torpedo level I had laying around. If I built it brand new I would probably be out 3 or 4 dollars.

    Make sure you check with your city code when putting up fences. I lived in a city that had a limit on height and the board spacing was no less than the width of the board. Also if you are on a corner lot both front and side (street side) are front yards and could not have privacy fences like shown in this video. Always check with your building codes before spending time and money. Great job and excellent instructional video. Thank You for sharing!

    I liked the handle you put on the spacer board. That's the good thing, "detail". GREAT job April, Cody And the helpful neighbors. My neighbors just want to talk to you for hours.... Keep the project going. TTFN.

      : ) Haha I love my neighbors. The one you see near the end stops by almost daily and has become almost like family. Most of the time I don't like people helping me out but this project was so huge I was throwing tools at anybody and everybody! haha.
