  • In this video (part 3) I am rebuilding my board on board cedar fence. The new cedar fence build has post boxes, top cap and trim, and a nice DIY gate. This is a large scale DIY project. The new cedar fence is pre-stained and the pickets over lap for a 100% privacy fence.

She took her time. She did a LOT of labor intensive craftsmanship that costs a shit ton of labor. Day laborers are never going to take the time she did. Hell, dado cuts on the gate bracing, are you kidding me, LOL! There is real pride in doing something like that that only you know how good it is. You get what you pay for or you get what you put your hard eared labor into.

Having moved to Texas a few years ago, I can attest to the fact that Texan's build the best fences I've ever seen for residential use . They are big & robust, yet still maintain the elegance and detail that certainly catch your eye as you drive by. Now I know how to build one thanks to AW. Good Job April 👍 You never cease to amaze me.

Being a carpenter myself it drives me crazy when people run the diagonal the wrong way. Lot's of people dont even know what that diagonal board is for on gates and think it looks pretty in the opposite direction.

I had a 25 foot fence with post already in the 1 foot concrete wall. I did everything like she said and my neighbors can't stop complimenting me. It came out awesome. Since the columns are on the inside the other side of my house fence has pickets higher. So all I did is run the cedar 2x4 across the top of pickets and 2x6 across top and it works great too. The columns are below the top of fence. It looks great too. Other than the physical labor the explanation she give and directions where perfect. Keep your phone handy. I did have to refer to the videos a few times. But it was like she was there with me telling me what to do. I have never built anything in my life.

This is still the BEST looking privacy fence i have found online. I wish I would have done my poles as you did instead of wood 4x4's but i used Secure set and creosote so hopefully i get more than 25+ years out of them we will see! Good Job!

I've seen an alternate method that might be better. Instead of using three pickets to build the decorative box to hide the steel pole, the other method rips a 2x4 into two 2x2s, then uses one of those 2x2 strips on each side of the steel pole, and then those are used as the sides of the box and then a picket is put across the front, as is done here. The end result will be a lower profile box than these, and the 2x2 strips can be expected to warp less than those giant 1x6 pickets used as sides in this video. However, the steel posts used here like very beefy, so the 2x2s may not be big enough to create the needed clearance. Also she would have to do extra timeconsuming and exacting detail work to cut notches in the 2x2s to clear those steel brackets.

$5800 for a fence. Probably a few grand worth of tools used, too. Hurray for sponsors. The video gives the impression that this is something you can tackle with the help of some friends and neighbors. But really, unless you or one of your friends is a woodworker by trade and already has a boatload of tools, and you want to take out a second mortgage to cover the cost of a fence, its not very likely to happen.
It is a damn good looking fence, though.

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  7 лет назад +85

You're right, I spent right at a grand for the tools to do this fence but you know what? even after that on top of the expense of the materials I still saved thousands so it was worth it. It would have cost $12,000 to hire out this job. In my experience you can always find reason why something won't work if you want to, but on the other hand you can always make something work if you want to. Most people wouldn't have steel posts and wouldn't need to extend them (take off those tools and that expense). You could leave off the top cap and trim if you wanted to (take off that expense). You could also leave off the posts boxes with all their top cap and trim (take off that expense). Then there....you not only cut out some of the tools needed but also some of the expense. Or another option: save up and start by just doing the pickets, then save some more and add the top cap and trim, then after saving another bit of time come back and add the boxes. When doing projects you just have to be creative about how to get it done. That is, if you want to get it done.

April Wilkerson you spent a grand on tools and used other tools you already had that were another grand. You'd have to be buying your tools off the back of a truck if you hope to get a compressor, air hoses, nailer, welder, welding gear, grinder, miter saw, Skil saw, screw gun, drill, levels, helping hands, wood roller, table saw, and anything else I missed from the video. Either stolen or bottom of the barrel Porter Cable junk tools.

Pawn stores, Craigslist, garage sales, borrow whatever you can from friends....again if you want to get something done then there is a way. If you know you need to replace your fence and it's going to cost 12K to hire the job out then start keeping your eyes open for good deals on the things you'll need months ahead of time and collect them slowly so it doesn't all come out at once. Or don't. Pay the contractor his huge fee and don't think about it again.

April Wilkerson what did you do with the old fencing

    • @u15GummiBear

April has done a fantastic job on this, and it is a much more finished product than I would have ever considered for a fence. I enjoy watching her videos.
I grew up using tools for every discipline, working right alongside my Dad and Grandpa. I put myself through college working in a cabinet shop. Now, my daughter helps me on projects of all kinds.
Tools accumulate over time. I've been buying tools for my whole life; some new, some used. If you're thinking that you're going to save a ton by buying them all at once, you're in for a shock. There are still some tools that I don't use very often, and will borrow from a friend or family member.
Materials cost what materials cost. The grade and style of wood you use can have a significant impact on the cost. There's often a substitution for a less expensive material. Same goes for hardware. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. Aesthetic and material quality don't come cheap.
Labor - that's your biggest risk. Doing it yourself gives a sense of accomplishment. Subbing it out, gives you the sense of instant gratification.
