its an awareness issue. repeating the same mistakes and not trying to change is stupid. refusing to accept reality, clinging to imaginations, and an unwillingness to learn.
Even worse is that the Dunning-Kruger effect has been debunked, and the study has been discredited. The only result that could be derived from the study is that stupid people do stupid things.
I don't know where this quote originated from but the video can be summarised by this quote. "The problem is that stupid people are full of confidence, while intelligent people are full of doubts."
Cipolla's 5 Laws of Stupidity: 1) Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation. 2) The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person. 3) A stupid person is one who causes harm to another person or group of people without benefiting from it, and possibly even causing harm to themselves. 4) Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. 5) A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.
"Knowledge is a paradox. The more one comes to understand, the more one realizes the vastness of his ignorance." People will learn a few things and think they know it all. @@mord0 that is part of the dunning kruger effect I believe. After all we are all here the first time trying to figure things out mostly for ourselves. No-one is an expert in the human experience nor any topic within.
Stupidity is the inability to understand information due to a lack of knowledge, combined with the arrogance to believe you already have the answers. In an era where information is increasingly commoditised and readily accessible, those who combine knowledge with humility will remain free, rather than being subjected to the influence of others using AI to shape the lives of many. Success stems from the ability to take action based on knowledge, rather than passively consuming information without true understanding or appreciation.
Actually they need each other; Evil needs the stupid people to carry out the evil. Evil is never satisfied with just having evil ideas, the evil genius thinks "what good is my evil if I can't put it into action? Burn, baby, slash, trash, and mash". Maybe evil needs what makes stupid, a boring, sterile society... It's so boring those routines, seeing others having stuff I want, not having abundant money, having law restrict me, just can go shopping, can't get wild, or carry out revenge, or be helping in a generous capacity because the clever rich lobby in their favor.
My son has an autoimmune disease. My husband and I have spent a lot of money, and have flown him around the world looking for answers. We have racked up a lot of medical debt. My son is 12, and will live with me the rest of his life if things don't improve. One thing I have learned is people that know absolutely nothing about my son's condition love to tell me what I need to do. It is always very basic advice. They really think I can just give him a vitamin, and everything will be solved. I never ask for these people's advice because I know they know jack shit about any of it .I have learned to stay quiet. I think they mean well. They are just clueless. They feel good about themselves when they tell me what to do. I just listen. I have already given that vitamin, but I let them go on about it. It makes them feel good about themselves to have all the answers. It also puts distance between me and them. They could never have my problem because they would solve it. They judge me for flying around the world looking for answers. They have all the answers. My world is full of uncertainty. I live in the realm of gray. I have to. This is why I stay quiet. I walk between the veil of their black and white answers. They will never live in my world. My gray world terrifies them, but I am a lot wiser because I live in the land of gray. I am a lot kinder, and empathetic to people that have chaos in their life. I understand that chaos. I understand that strange void. I have learned to be quiet. I have learned to listen. I have learned how to walk into someone else's gray world, and just listen.
I have an auto immune disease and I am going through the same thing but unlike your child, I have no support. It's shocking how stupid people can be , I have lost so much respect for a lot of people... They give advice without even reading up on it... however much you tell them. I really learnt how selfish people are and how much they don't care. Not needing validation is really important it has helped me find peace and self-reliance
Dick Cheney said the US could go into Iraq for two years costing $20 Billion. How stupid. The US went into Iraq and Afghanistan for 20 years and it cost 6 - 8 trillion dollars. ~~ But he had the neocon power to cause the war.
I have been labelled as having an above average intelligence on multiple occasions or having been praised for the knowledge I possess/have acquired over the years, yet looking back at life, I did some really darn stupid things in the past (and hopefully a fair bit less in the future), begging the question when in reflection: "What the heck was I thinking?!" With leaders though, it's magnified due to the power over organizations these individuals wield; it's like maintaining leveraged positions in the financial markets, as both the upside potentials, as well as the downside risks are greatly enhanced. In the end, strive for wisdom while cultivating humility, irrespective of the particular life path you pursue!
If you are improving yourself, when you leap forward where you were before always looks so weirdly dumb. But if you stayed there, you would be that dumb still. There's nothing more interesting than having the chance to meet someone twenty rungs of the ladder above you, and you just can't figure why they don't want to know you.

Stupid is a word used so much that it may be useless now. But the major point here is significant: stupidity is a surplus of certainty. My essays on Medium are not read because as he says, people cannot hold two thoughts at once, like "chewing gum and patting your tummy at the same time".
He's using "stupid" to mean different things during the course of the interview. When most people say "stupid," they mean "people who disagree with me."
People aren't necessarily stupid but everyone is prone to do stupid things on occasion (some more often than others). People are complex like he says at 4:22 lol.
It is easier to identify an evil person vs a stupid person. Stupid people can fly under the radar for many decades. Stupid person is one who harms others with no benefit to themselves. An evil person is one who harms others for their benefit.
You can have a great store of knowledge, but all that knowledge is useless without the wisdom to utilize that knowledge. I always strive to keep learning, people often say "You don't know everything" and they are correct, but that doesn't mean I should stop trying to learn more than I know, merely that I must gain wisdom alongside my knowledge to determine what I do with the knowledge. This is one of my favorite and ultimately a super complex thought. You can know a lot and be as stupider than the guy who knows very little, because that guy has lived longer, and has more wisdom and experience.
Seems like the answer is to operate probabilistically and flexibly. if its highly likely that x is true then operate as if its true until new and compelling information forces that probability to shift and then you change course respectively.
Oh, oh, Trumpism will mark you as a smarty farty intellectual and off you go to that big detention center they want to build. I'd hide that big forehead under a MAGA cap.
Being dumb is not so much of a problem, there is solutions for that, specially if one is aware of that. But the worst is being dumb and thinking that one is smarter than the rest, that can be catastrophic.
So the answer might be to have people question their certainty? Come to think, that could be difficult, were the dadaists and absurdist trying to do that?
Thank you for saying this. I just had someone confirm to me that I knew what I was supposed to know & that my teacher is as knowledgeable as he should be.
Knowing I know nothing is also thinking with over blown certainty. I know nothing in some ultimate sense, but we do know a few things but don't know how to use those few things.

ROFL someone educated telling someone else what stupid is, and saying certainty is the point failure. So. No. Dumb is= you don't know. Stupid is= you knew, and you did it anyway. Then there is the stupid that transcends all - the ultra-dangerous stupid that is less preferable than the diabolical criminal mind. Because the later has logic and cunning. People are more stubborn than they are stupid. It’s this stubbornness that continues to cause harm in the world.
I find it to be a mixture of both.

Life is VERY complex too
The Dunning-Kruger effect caused me to believe i was a genius.
I soon found out i was the incompetent person.
It takes courage to admit that. Most people’s egos won’t allow to admit that. Bravo to you 👏

Smart people usually underestimate their competency, aka imposter syndrome

Socrates: 'I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing”
Socrates vanity made him say it. The ancient philosophers were proud of themselves.
He didn’t say that he was wise. This is attributed to him by others. He never made that boast.
