  • I go where no one has had the balls to go before! I answer some of the big questions that have been plaguing our world for... uhh... some time! "Why do certain people who claim to be on a "spiritual path" seem so full of sh*t that you feel like you can't trust them?!" I'll give you a hint, it's not because they're pretentious. Oh no, it's MUCH more obvious than that!

Thanks for making me aware that I said "Disingenuine" at least 4 or 5 times when the word is *Disingenuous.* This is what happens when I try to record very late at night. I filmed and edited this entire thing between 1AM and 8AM this morning lol. I'm happy I didn't notice though - I've messed words up much worse in the past and scrapped entire videos because of it! Anyway, I should sleep. I promise, I'm not usually this unhealthy. Random errors aside, I hope my insomnia/stimulant induced video is able to wake a few people up.

SWIM I respect you a lot man, you are a wise person and a great youtuber, but I have to be honest, in my opinion even this comment is evidence of your large ego. It's okay to not know a word. You don't have to make an excuse for using a word wrong. I do this too so I recognize it. Not criticism, just something to think about. Anyways, still a great video, as always.

Tao Te Ching says quite a bit about the paradox that you're talking about. Here's one of my favorite verses:
Fill your bowl to the brim
    and it will spill.
    Keep sharpening your knife
    and it will blunt.
    Chase after money and security
and your heart will never unclench.
    Care about people's approval
and you will be their prisoner.
Do your work, then step back.
    The only path to serenity.
In short, it's impossible to search for other's approval and discover peace of mind in the process.

This is the reason why I started watching you, you tell the damn truth, and you're not afraid to be honest, like you've shown here.
I've been having trouble doing this in my own art (I'm a filmmaker, looking to do more on youtube) and been struggling to find the balance between looking good/being perfect and being authentic. Which has made me basically stop doing videos out of the fear of it all.
This definitely gives me hope though, thanks for always being real, Adam.

I love how straight to the point you are. You manage to fit good gags between making strong arguments and still get the point through very clearly. Most youtubers draw out everyyyy singleeeee video and hardly ever get to the point or even try to make it clear. More commonly with channels these days you’ll only get to see them ramble and try to up-sell their merc lol

  • @TheDiamondNet
    @TheDiamondNet 6 лет назад +79

As a spiritual RUclipsr, I totally agree with all of this. I've dealt with the same types of cognitive dissonance in my history of posting videos. I even stopped for about a year for a bunch of different reasons, with this being one of them. I would describe it as, 'I want to WANT TO help others.' or 'I want to WANT TO be a healer.' I recognize that, at the deepest levels, I don't actually have the capacity to truly care about helping others, but I wish that I did. But my wishing for this ability to help others, is just another way to want to help myself. And it's like this cycle of wanting to be free from self-interest. But I simply have no capacity to do so.
But the main thing that I'm skilled at that actually CAN help others is sharing insights, analyses, and personal observations. So, I have two uncomfortable choices: Spend my life doing a regular job that I don't excel at or enjoy very much and keep my insights to myself to avoid trying to profit off of an inherently dishonest image, even if it's what feels like it's right for me and can actually help others too even if my motivations are off. Or, go ahead and let go of the need to have the exact right motivations, and just go ahead and do what I do well (and be of help to others, even if my motivations aren't pure) and try to make a decent living off of to support my family, just like everyone else in all other professions do.
Ultimately, I decided on the latter, because even this whole conundrum of purity of motivation has to do with protecting my self image and trying to seem like a good person. I probably wouldn't care about all of these concerns if I was truly free of ego. I would just do what feels right and do the things that help others regardless of my self-centered motivations and lack of ability to do otherwise. But when I experienced ego transcendence, (also as a result of an entheogen) when I ACTUALLY had the capacity to truly love others, I loved them and everything else because I recognized them as an extension of myself.
So, it's not even as though I gained the ability to care about others, when I had transcended the ego. I was still just as self-interested as ever before... perhaps even more intensely than before because I truly loved myself too. I did not gain the ability to care about others, I simply lost the illusion of separation that made me think of other people as being separate from myself.

The Diamond Net loving kindness meditation

    • @TheDiamondNet
      @TheDiamondNet 6 лет назад +6

I'm familiar with loving kindness meditation, and I do ruminate on that topic just about every day. I care about helping people and animals too. I am Vegan, and I'm always (nearly obsessively) thinking about ways to alleviate suffering for everyone. That said, what I've realized is that I'm currently unable to truly care about helping people with pure intentions just to help. It's always tainted by self interest no matter which way I slice it. And I've sliced it a lot of different ways.
I want to help others because it makes me uncomfortable not to and uncomfortable that the world can be harsh. I also want to help others because it makes me feel like a good person and bolsters my ego and helps alleviate a sense of deep inferiority that I feel. I also want to help others because I know I can do it well in the ways that I'm good at, and I want to make my living from it. My capacity to truly love is very limited and tainted by ego.
Loving kindness meditation is important. It can increase empathy and can help a person establish compassionate mindsets and habits. It can also keep a person from succumbing to "Zen devilry" as they go further on the path. It's truly a necessity to keep compassion and kindness in the forefront as a person walks the path. Because in losing the sense of self, one could also lose their motivations to be a good person who does good things. This would lead to a lot of negative things as the emptiness of the reality becomes more clear. But loving kindness doesn't necessarily help a person permanently transcend the ego. Perfect love does. But loving kindness is more of a practical tool for maintaining compassionate habits. It's similar to the chores that Buddhist monks engage in. Establishing positive routines is essential to someone trying to transcend the ego, which is the main motivating factor for all actions taken under the ego consciousness paradigm.

Rather than criticizing these people’s hypocrisy, maybe we should be thankful that these people are bringing new ideas to those who may not have ever been exposed to it outside of RUclips. Now what perhaps should be discussed is how to not idolize and worship these people as the viewer. As long as we as viewers keep in mind that these people are human too, we can appreciate the message without getting stuck up on the messenger.

I don't think putting videos on RUclips is the issue. Heck it broadens their audience for their message which could affect more people than who would just seek out these healers in person. That being said u do have to look out for people doing it for financial or egotistical gain

I think the problem is the gamification of it - as your message starts reaching a wider audience, you also get more ego boosts from the numbers and attention, and that ends up tainting your message whether you're trying to contain it or not.
Good rule of thumb - if they say "make sure to like, comment, share and subscribe and also follow me on twitter, facebook, tumblr, and support me on patreon" every video, you're probably better off staying far away.

    • @Ruebzzz

Wolfin i get what you are saying and i too am skeptical of spirituality YT ppl however spiritual people have to make money to live too. Although they may get some ego boosters this whole comment section regarding koi is not an ego booster. YT “fame” comes with a price and it can crush the ego as well as raise it. I dont know koi, we dont know him. But based off what i have seen he seems open to fixing his flaws and is just a guy finding meaning in what hes learning. Whether he is conscious of the ego driven side of YT or not (im sure he is) is his own prerogative. The end result is hes getting people interested in some way shape or form to spirituality as a whole. I highly doubt those who get a spark of interest from his videos will only ever watch him and not the things he talks about (if they do thats not kois issue). Idk what do you think? I myself am skeptical of all i watch on this platform even adam lol but with skepticism comes understanding they’re all human with flaws and compared to many others may be more aware of them

Most of these 'spirtual guru's", especially the popular ones, do it for the money, there is no shame in it. But that's the reality. They have to earn their wages, too lol. Just bothers me that the audience don't know how to take everything with a grain of salt. Even got into a discussion with some woman, she was sure her TWIN FLAME is real, without any arguments.

Come on. I doubt there are many people out there who do NOT do it for financial gain, because realistically speaking, no adult living in a modern economy has the time or energy to put videos out there for nothing. Absolutely nothing. Might be some kids, and I mean some CHILDREN out there, who use RUclips only as a plaything and don't expect anything in return. MAYBE some adults who are already more than set financially and have nothing better to do with their lives... but you'd have to be an egotistical moron to think there are people out there who care about your videos... and actually there are plenty of those people who apparently also have a lot of time to waste...

Natural Selection I agree with most of what you said, except I don’t follow any religion. If you wanted a more explanatory description I’d probably fall into, Realist Skeptic, Atheist, Antitheist, Satanist, Humanist. I meditate twice a day but I don’t call that my religion... I effectively sample philosophies and tools I find most agreeable to me and that which is supported by evidence. Meditation for instance is a scientifically supported tool I use to focus my mind on my intentions and teach my subconscious to act less impulsively. I smoke and micro dose cannabis daily to keep my mind focused on the present and to keep my sleep schedule to 5 hours a night. I also like to get high and produce music. I’m not one with God nor is anyone else nor are we collectively. There is no use for the construct, we live in the future where people walk around with micro computers in their pockets. I don’t take that for granted. I wish people didn’t ...

I loved what you said about the "war" between the psychedelic and non-psychedelic enlightenment and the ego (future video please). And your message in general, in all your videos. But along with your first point, I really really think RUclips can be a huge tool for some people that really want to help and share their inner experiences. But it's true that when money, numbers and likes come into place... it must be difficult to remain true.
Also, it would be great if you recommend some genuine "spiritual" youtubers. Thank you Adam, much love.

I'd recommend to follow your instincts. If you are watching someone and they feel honest and sincere trust that. RUclipsr's aside, my all-time-favourite teacher is "Alan Watts." However, it's important to keep in mind that no one is ever perfect. He died an alcoholic and smoked like a chimney. In fact, his own daughter states he was drunk during many of his lectures! To me, this only makes him more admirable. I mean he wasn't afraid to do his dance even if others judged him for it. I'm not saying alcoholism should be celebrated, but he made his choice and went with it.

Every artist needs a muse. When we press an artist to produce, oftentimes what was once a muse, or an inspiration for that artist can lose it's effectiveness. So the artist will produce. But without true inspiration, is no longer creating. When this happens we sometimes turn on that artist. We accuse our beloved artist of "selling out" or becoming "mainstream" but what we fail to recognise is that we are the ones who demanded production from that person. We end up destroying what we loved. We steal from that artist the very thing that made them beautiful.

Totally agree man. Thought I think it's important to understand that the actions of an individual don't have to represent their inner space (though most of the time it does). All of us are just playing roles - the doctor, the business man, the husband, the wife, the RUclipsr. The distinction is whether we believe we are those roles, or whether we simply choose to play them. Like you said, the point of being here is to experience consciousness through an ego. The difference between a harmful teacher or a beneficial one is whether or not they are consciously choosing to play a role to help others, or whether they are playing a role because they legitimately believe they are the shit. A true teacher knows they they aren't shit, and that they know nothing.

Well spoken! As a creator myself, I try to balance my love for making art whilst making my content more engaging, and I constantly fear losing my way. Love and attention is a human necessity, but when you throw technology into the mix, it can really throw you off balance! But I'm grateful for the chance to experience all these powerful forces (my Ego, my artistic spirit, and technology) dancing and clashing with each other, like star systems seeking equilibrium when they first begin to form...an incredible sight to watch.

I don’t really think anyone can really eliminate the ego. It’s always there, the only way to move past the constraints of the ego is to accept that the ego will always be a part of you. You have to accept it without judgement to really see your ego clearly, then from that acceptance, and consciously deciding to be honest with yourself, to make the decisions that can give you more control over your life, you move past the dark side of the ego.

I see all these gurus, and I would feel fake acting like them if I feel shit somedays, this is a reason why I literally made a vid about this saying, "look Im not a guru, just a guy, try'na be happy, and live a better life, sometimes its works sometimes I go down the drain of negative emotions" I dont want to be called fake, It would be emotionally draining to make a living about holding an image, and fearing it can shatter any time.

Koi also puts in his bio to do your own research and don’t just listen to everything he says. People are trying to put him on blast saying he thinks he’s a “God”. I don’t think people actually watch his videos before they go off judging him. He makes a bunch of different videos on a variety of different philosophies, not videos saying “my way his the highway if you want to become spiritual” or saying “I’m more spiritual than you!” . Also people bringing up money?? Sorry he is like many others including Adam not wanting to be a wage slave and would rather work for himself and do it in a way where he can help others along with himself! Yes there is ego and in my opinion you have to have a little ego I don’t think anyone has zero ego in the Western Hemisphere. Koi is far from fraud you chumps he is someone who wants to help like minded individuals to grow as a spiritual being and if that’s fraud than I must not know what’s proper.

yo adam, what do you think of the idea that considering the chaotic nature of life, everybody ends up fulfilling a role that was bound to come into existence naturally. Chaos follows a form that humans wouldn't be able to understand because of our limited perception due to time, reality, and morality. It seems to me that humans are like to think we're gaining control of the world, meanwhile everything we do starts being challenged by an opposing force such as a political movement or just random evolution. Disease will always find a way to us, mutations will continue, and we fear them and their consequences even though it was those processes that brought humans this far in the evolutionary scale

Are you talking about Koi Fresco? That is priceless. RUclips beef at its finest. I get where this is coming from though, because you and YourMateTom really started this whole spiritual/psychedelic section of RUclips and now guys like Koi are kinda riding in the tailwinds of videos that you already have made, but he still preaches a decent message every now and again in terms of spirituality. They say some of the best priests have ties with the devil, so that says that the intent doesn't matter as much as the message. Some of these big famous priests I'm sure are no longer in it for God or spiritual path finding either, it becomes more about money for alot of people. Luckily your channel has always seemed very genuine and you have never gave off that impression, but your intent honestly doesn't matter. To be honest, I'd probably still watch your channel if you sold out, because your an entertaining guy and you give good messages. If the viewer is able to pull something positive out of the video, then it doesn't matter what the intent of the producer was, because it has a positive effect in return. It's duality. Negative intent can cause a positive return and vice versa. I get where you were coming from though. It's fucked up that people can portray characters and make a living these days, but I mean you can't hate a man for wanting to live, even if it makes him seem fake.

Delineation between the true self & the ego is possible and needed for authentic knowledge of being. Need for approval soaked validation of your own existence seems to be the default operating mode for humanity at this moment rather than traveling that introspective journey through the semi-permanent egoic fissure to finally introduce yourselves to one another.
I’ve tripped many times throughout my life. I’ve never experienced a spiritual awakening during those wonderful experiences; I believe that they gave me the deeper knowledge of my ego, shadow, & inner wounds. Without that knowledge, my natural transcendental trip into the absolute would’ve never happened.

I greatly appreciate and agree with this topic. I started my spiritual journey watching all the spiritual RUclipsrs but as my practice turned into my life I started seeing past a lot of the lies and false constructs. That is when I unsubscribed from most of those channels, I had read all the same books as these RUclips gurus I started hearing them repeat ideas and quotes from these books but passing it off as there own original thought. I do not watch spiritual RUclipsrs anymore because your spiritual path is your own you have to learn, grow and come to conclusions alone through meditation and good will. The more you listen to these false prophets the further you get from your own enlightenment. Seek truth from within yourself and live your truth outwardly.

Dude I just commented on the video you released today, and had no idea you had this channel too. Great. Now I have alllll your videos on here. Welp. Here we go lol
It's so funny because of what I specifically said in my comment about my experience of Stillness. I'm very grateful for you sharing these ideas and your journey. Thanks man.

They build a RUclips to help wake others up and to help others go through their own awakening. I honestly think I’d be dead without some of their help, so I don’t think you should generalize all of them in one category.

I appreciate the way Adam looks at things, I try to be as neutral as I can and see things from as many perspectives as possible. It's a constant battle to step away from my comfort zone mentally and try to understand that everyone's experience and the variables that change everyone's views on the world around them can make for drastically different ways to Express their self in a community of individuals. The fact that we can share many similarities with anyone around us in meaningful ways seems like a special thing we shouldn't take for granted as much.

I think you are bringing up some valid points here. The issue too is that to help people you don't necessarily have to break down your own Ego - so people get caught up in this idea that they have to burn down their Ego in order to be Spiritual. The truth is -- most people aren't going to burn down their Ego if they don't do Psychedelics. I think the best goal is to not TRY to save people's lives -- but to share your wisdom and let the people who are attracted to that gain what they can from your wisdom... :)

Koifresco is the pinnacle of ignorant spiritual youtubers. He is NEVER wrong. Ever. His ego cannot admit that he got somethings about quantum mechanics wrong or I️ had an interaction with him on instagram that completely turned me off to him because I️ realized it was all a facade. I️ can’t possibly take spiritual advice from somebody who doesn’t even recognize their own faults or seemingly have any faults in his own mind. So disingenuous. I’ve unsubscribed from him hahahah

emmamliston you have to understand something. He is just as human as everyone else. Just because he has become very spiritual which is great because I'm sure it makes him very happy but he's not any bigger than you and I because he discovered all these things. He's human, he will probably struggle with his ego forever and that's normal but he's trying as I am and you are. Don't be so harsh, he's only human.

Tyler, I’m allowed to criticize somebody when their words and their actions do not align and they are being disingenuous. That’s all this is, a criticism. If koi practices what he preaches then he will learn and grow out of criticism from others.

I dont like to describe myself as "spiritual" anymore because people bunch me in with the whole new age, woke hippie, indigo child bs, etc. They judge me as this dumbfounded gullible fool that thinks he can talk to crystals and beleives in the flat earth theory. I dont know what to call myself in terms of religion or beleif. My definition of Spirituality is the connection you have to All There Is, and your everchanging perpective of existence. Something like that. The problem is words and spirituality dont mix. To express or articulate what spirituality is, is like trying to fit an entire ocean into a bottle, and people act like thats the only way to observe the ocean. I think the simplest way to describe spirituality is life. Because life cant be described so simply either. But we do have our own idea and experience of what life is, which is exactly what i think your spirituality is basically. How you relate to existense

Completely agree with this!! Used to watch some Koi Fresco, I think he must feel like if he doesn't try to pass on this image of living/breathing perfection then people won't listen to him? He seems to lack intellectual honesty about his flaws, as such he just comes across unbalanced, and unaccountable for the fact he's just a normal dude like you and me. Like you say, you must "act as if you know"
Edit: Filming late at night and rambling is good for the soul!
