- This is an overview of the anahiki nokogiri Japanese timber cutting saw. There is some details about the physical dimensions as well as some tips I figured out when cutting some small slabs from a 6 inch piece of African Sumac. The anahiki nokogiri saw is a beam cutting saw used for general construction or timber framing. I picked this one up as new old stock from Ebay. The original manufacturer is Nakaya Atsuo.

I admire your enthusiasm for making board by hand, not a lot of people appreciate the difficulty of transforming wood in boards or planks any other way than with a sawmill.
Thanks for taking the time to explain and demonstrate the use of the Anahiki saw. Good pronunciation of Japanese terms
Wow! For only hand sawing they came out real smooth & flat. Good job!
I have a similar anahiki, use it all the time timber framing. My favorite. Much easier to sharpen than other Japanese saws
Man your japanese saw collection is amazing!!
Great video. There's a whole world of Japanese saws to learn about, I've got a ryoba which I like using so might try and find one of these.
thats beautiful saw
Wow that was pretty good. Usually I've seen angled cut marks when people manually cut wood like that when they accidentally apply pressure sideways, but 2:09 looks perfect
i have three of them. i got them from longshoremen in sasebo while loading the ship. they are a fearsome tool. watched them cut 6 2x6s at once rather than one at a time. the blades are long and thin. the teeth tend to be brittle, have to be careful of the pushing the blade back so that you don't bend the saw. it takes practice
What a lucky man.. whose made that traditional saw ? one day u're collection will be golden treasures. Would you make more videos with that traditional saw please ? Sharpening and cut more wood videos.. thanks for share that rare item.
Good job, will get one of those saws too. I have some japanese saws but none for this kind of job. Great video. Thanks for posting!
I never felt right with Japanese saws, but I am glad that you're doing it.
+John Zhu thanks John. I find myself thinking of body position more now.
Simple enthusiasm cuts of timber saw, Having cut wood project for furniture?
MUITO LEGAL SEU TRABALHO ⚒ ⚒ VERY NICE YOUR WORK, HUGS FROM BRAZIL
I bought something that looked a lot like that a few years ago. Same look, length and teeth. I wanted it for rip cutting, but was told by UK based Japanese tool users that it is a cross cut saw, and that it isn't finished from the factory and would benefit from sharpening and adjustment of set.
This is correct, I just gave mine a sharpen and it's SO much faster. Have not touched the set but that's mainly due to not knowing anything about it.
Shiny! Well done Browncoat!
Pretty awesome saw!
Thank you!!! Sorry about answering this so late :(
This video is what i was looking for. I have at least 10,000 dollars worth of tools for metal so far (small shop i know), and i really don’t want to spend any more money on wood tools. I’d rather spend a lot of extra time on my furniture than take up more space and money in an already otherwise small shop
Wow, very impressive saw & demonstration. Well done.
+Rag Tie thank you 😀
I'm hopeful you'll help me locate this saw. I have searched for Anahiki, and found several models from 210-360mm, but not the 400+mm you showed in the video. I searched for Nakaya Atsuho generally, and didn't find any references to the Maker at all. Would you mind entering into a dialogue to help a fellow enthusiast? Be well, G
Nice saw. But my thumbs up is for the Blue Sun Firefly shirt. Always nice to spot a Brown Coat.
Still one of my favorite shows and movies!
you don't need to clamp the saw to anything to drive the handle home. just get it started, stand up and tap it home from there holding it vertically.. watch those precious fingers when getting a cut started. I've enjoyed the bennies of these saws for 40 years now and no going back to those pushers. cheers.
Yo blue sun! Keep flying friend!
That thumbnail / shot at the end looks well composed. I figured you were an expert, not using it for your first time. Looks like the try it and observe and adjust methodology is working pretty well for you though. You seemed to be getting some good traction.
Thank you Sol. Sorry to get back to your comment so late. I've been able to use the saw a couple of times now, and it's becoming my favorite for rough cutting timbers. I was able to get an old hand plane adjusting hammer that needs a new handle. The saw was used to rough cut an olive tree log for the replacement.
Good vid, awesome tshirt! Jayne Cobb for life!
+MundiGaming 💪👊 for sure!!
Nice shirt.
You have great skills man! Congrats for this new saw, it's fantastic !
Thank you Daniel. I'm not sure I deserve the great skills comment. I'm always learning.
Because you always think of learning, it is that the skills must be recognized friend :)
another nice addition to the rack
Thanks Robert!! I might do a comparison with it and the new timber saw I just got to see if there is an advantage of using one over the other.
Great job.... And it cuts pretty nice too..
+Houtje Boom - Be Creative thank you. Once I figured things out with the last cut it was pretty decent.
super saw and great job! And your dog is ever lovely!
I appreciate this because i am too broke to get a huge machine and am very limited on space
That is an impressive big saw!
+Sebastiaan Mollema thanks! I'm going to have to use it soon to cut some eucalyptus
Haha! You said just an hour ...? 👏👏👏👍
That's awesome !
I ordered one of these but the tang won’t go all the way into the handle did your handle split when you put it all the way in?
Check out this video. I came across it last week. It does a good job of showing how to fit the handle. ruclips.net/video/3PgGd2xMWmw/видео.html
Where can you buy these saws in the us
Sweet buy. Which position did you find works best for you?
Thanks. Whether I was standing or kneeling, my left leg was forward and the right was back. The but of the saw handle was pulled to my right hip area. I also focused on making sure I didn't try to force the cut and letting the saw do most of the work.
Great saw! How do you like it for cutting logs compared to your Maebiki?
It's nice to have power tools, but these saws can be fun! I have a great Mado-Noko that I use to cut small, short logs with.
Thanks Jesse. Sorry about answering this so late. I'm probably going to go to this saw for anything 8 inches and under. Once you get used to it you can cut a pretty straight cut. That's cool! I love the one I have too.
Thank you
Where'd you get the saw? I've looked online but have not found this particular one.
Can't believe the blade is less than a millimeter thin. It surprisingly sturdy
As long as it is stroked straight, the blade stays in tension while under load (draw stroke). The technique requires attention though, too much sideways pressure or misalignment can cause it to fold and kink especially on the return stroke. These saws have a less pronounced tooth set (ie size of kerf) than western saws.
your colection is so amazing . wish i can can try them oneday
i have foudr of these saws. was in japan and observed how they used them. once you learn how to use them, you will never use a western hand saw again. i see they go retail in US for $250. they have a beautiful ringing sound when tapped lightly
Do you replace the blade when it gets full or do you send it back to Japan for resharpening?
+Brian M. I was going to try sharpening it when it gets dull. I have the feather files. Also, the teeth are fairly large so it's easier to see the angles on them.
AdventuresInDIY you should get publish a video on how to sharpen Japanese saws. I’m definitely interested!
This saw in particular is dull from the maker. I just got a diamond feather file and gave it a rather amateurish sharpening. My lord the difference is like night and day - it just wants to EAT the wood now, as in it starts a cut from just placing the teeth on the wood, they start to dig in immediately.
PS: I got a_ diamond_ feather file specifically because I can use it to sharpen my replaceable high-hardness blades. It's both cheaper (I am a bargain shopper) and faster than having to order a new blade if I see mine go dull. Plus I'm not at the mercy of a useless saw if the manufacturer decides to not make them anymore. I'm not worried about the diamonds upsetting the carbon content because I don't imagine the couple strokes per tooth builds up anywhere near enough heat to have an effect.
Haha I see you are a Firefly fan!
For sure 😁
So which cutting position worked best for you?
+James Cromwell when I was standing or kneeling my left leg was forward and right back pulling the but of the saw handle to my right hip area.
say that name 5xs fast..lol good stuff chris! good info too !🍻💥
LOL! Thanks Joe! Barda almost got those birds....right :)
AdventuresInDIY heck yea!lol shes quick..
50 thou is actually 1.25mm give or take. Something's wrong with your vernier.
I got one of these and I suspect it's not sharpened from how slow it's cutting. Still faster than my smaller saws, but I knew something was wrong when it was taking much longer than how I've seen american and british push saws cut, with their thicker saw plates.
PS: I also have a small suspicion that it might be a forgery from the sheer amount of "new old stock" the seller has been listing. Of course it could be just that the sawmaker offloaded a whole warehouse of unsold stock, but for the price I paid (a tenth or less the cost of a rusty maebiki) I can't really complain since it seems to be well-made regardless.
So here's an update: It was NOT sharpened from the maker/seller.
After giving it a sharpen, it cuts so much faster. The teeth dig in in by just placing them against the wood without even starting the cut. I am no sharpening expert (I did use the feather file on 2 other saws first to get a feel to handle it) but even with my amateur sharpening the difference is like night and day.
To put it poetically: Sharpening this saw turns it into a demon that glutinously devours any wood you put in its teeth.
This is the purchase link of the item in the video:www.amazon.com/dp/B087RGL6C5
that's a Kataba, it's for crosscuts, it is NOT the one from the video.
What in the world was that monstrosity on the right at 2:15 ?
Oh... that's a madonoko saw :D It's usually for cross-cutting.
Ahh never mind...you said in the first five seconds of video. haha
Shiney T-Shirt ;)
:D
You used a crosscut to rip a log.....
Its a ripcut, japanese saws have reversed teeth, they are pullsaws
@@cezaryw.9570 it being a pullsaw has nothing to do with the fact that it has crosscut teeth. It's not a ripsaw.
50 thousanths is not less than one millimeter.
Hahaha great April Fools joke!
+Mike Rice 😂
U need to train to use it for 10 years minimum master would slap u every time u moved the saw
I wish there was a master that I could apprentice in my area. For now I'll just keep practicing.
That music is terrible!
