  • In the world of Japanese swords, there exists a category known as "Youto", "demon swords." These swords are surrounded by legends, such as those that have supposedly slain demons, or are said to curse those who come into contact with them, instilling fear in people since ancient times. Among these, the most well-known demon sword is "Muramasa." Let's explore the true history of Muramasa, a sword that appears in modern video games and anime creations.

@jakevoss1980 I truly wonder if you have family in Japan... who somehow have distant ancestors, who have probably used these Muramasa Blades! If you do truly have a Second Generation Apprentice of Muramasa Blade... not only do you own a piece of Bloody History, but that blade is technically PRICELESS! It's one of the most REVERED Weapons of all of Japan... even though, they supposedly have a "Curse" to them. I have always wanted to own a Supernaturally Powered Sword. More specifically, an Ōdachi, or an Ōotāchi Sword!

Many years ago, I bought a very old Katana from the widow of a man at an estate sale. I gave $500 for it, a princely sum at the time. Once home with my acquisition, I took it apart to clean it and found it was signed. I worked with an old Japanese man at the time and asked him about the signature. He looked at the rub of the signature and grunted saying, it's a cursed blade and that I should get rid of it. But didn't tell me the name of the smith. I sent it to Japan to a polisher that I had worked with on other Katana restorations. He in turn passed the blade to another polisher because he told me he would not work on an accursed "Muramasa" blade. I got the sword back about 6 months later and it is absolutely beautiful. I also found a new polisher. Oddly according to the superstitions, it is supposed to whisper to its owner, cut you on its own accord and move around at night. Funny how these superstitions persist as it has done none of these things. But I treasure it for its history and beauty.

Have you heard it talking to you at all? Don't go slashing up your neighbours if you can help it.

Owning a Muramasa Blade isn't a Superstition... it's an Folklore Tale that the Samurai would talk about. If you don't know. Muramasa & his school produced MASSIVE amounts of these Blades, for a good price as well! So, not only were the normal Samurai getting these crazy Blades... but, bandits, criminals, Yakuza, and unstable people who could go murderous if they wanted to. That's why there was a huge negative stigma with the Muramasa Name... and why people still think that these Blades are somehow "Demonic" in nature.
Finally, I find a person who genuinely owns a Muramasa Blade! It must've been an old Blade... good thing it was sharpened and Polished. You must've been through hell trying to find a person in Japan who was "Brave" enough to Actually TOUCH a Supposedly Cursed Weapon... WHICH IS NOT EVEN CURSED, BECAUSE IT WAS MASS PRODUCED LIKE HELL! EVERYONE & THEIR DAMN GRANDPARENTS HAD ONE!

I had a katana signed Muramasa, Ise province. Possibly a hundred yrs old or less, probably signed in imitation of the smith. It had kizu or flaws, a tiny crack in the edge, but the tsuba was elegantly simple, in the 4 lobed melon outline, chiseled melon & leaves on one side, & exquisite tiny vines & a butterfly outlined in gold wire as thin as a hair, locked in place with thousands of tiny crosswise chisel marks.
