  • Today Ilya Alekseyev will take you on the journey of making the Heretic. The sword that won him the Best Sword of the Year award at Bladeshow 2021. In this video he will cover the classical inspirations that lead him to design and create this masterpiece work of art. Ilya will go over how he made the mosaic damascus and how he constructed and forged the blade. He will show you how he forges the guard and pommel and how he does all the amazing engraving and inlay work on all of the pieces. Making the Heretic took on and off over a years time. It was originally planned to be Ilya's showcase item for bladeshow 2020 but it was canceled and the project was placed on hold. In this video we cover much more then bladesmithing and dive deep into creating art and why we should do it! We also dive into the topic of historical swords of this manner and why they were designed and what practicality they presented. Please sit back and enjoy the making of the Sword of the Year !

Ilya you never cease to make me go "wow" - the weld pattern alone in this beautiful blade is art. Then add in the careful engravings and details and it is something that would make any appreciator of beautiful things speechless. Well done sir!

I have watched a LOT of smithing videos... and this is definitely the best. Not just because of the incredible beauty of the sword, but the philosophy, artistic insights, and history.

My fiancee and I were just sat here with our jaws hanging open looking at that thing. Every inch of that piece has so much thought and care put into it, from the blade tip to the pommel.
I love it when Iliya gets academic on any topic, but that is also one of the most beautiful blades I've ever seen.

Every now and then I come back to re-watch this to feel inspired. Watching the most impressive sword I've ever seen being made by a true master craftsman and artist just makes me appreciate life more. As stated in the video, this is truly a blade of kings, plural, and I'd almost be afraid to even breathe around it.
Truly an incredibly beautiful piece of art.

Ilya, I have been inspired by you for years, and finally at 30 years old just got my first forge and can finally put all my theoretical knowledge to use. Watching, learning how you conceptualized this piece and integrated everything top to bottom, every minute detail, and even the intellectual labor to design something completely new....I'm just so blown away by what you've done. Thank you for everything.
