Considering Christopher's love for the 35mm focal length, it came as a surprise that he hasn't yet tested the Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8 APSC. I bought the Sigma 56 f1.4 after watching Christopher's review of it.
Honestly it looks like a great lens, of course the corners are not the best however if you're about subject photography I think the advantages of f/0.95 completely outweigh the downside of the corners and the coma smearing. Also seems like the best option out of all the f/0.95 lenses out there (if you're on APS-C that is)
Really nice lens that! Radial chromatic aberration is a complete non-issue in the digital age, as it is easily corrected in "post" if you're shooting raw, as you should be. The only other serious vice here is the poor corner sharpness at the widest apertures. I would love to have something like this lens as an evening/night street photography lens. If only it had electrical contacts for aperture data...
Speaking of exciting lenses in the 35mm equivalent range, any plans for the Voigtländer 23mm Nokton for Fuji X? All I've seen so far is a Google-translated review from Japan, guessing it's still hard to get a hold of for the rest of the world, but even with broken English it was still drool-worthy. Thinking it could be the one to really push people like me towards using manual focus more often(since I've already got the 50mm equivalent covered).
To me the corners actually looked alright sharpness wise. Vignetting and Chromatic Aberration seems to be the real problem here if you want a clear image, contrast is also a bit lackluster but not a deal breaker. Coma smeering is unfortunate, otherwise this looks actually really promising
Any hope for review of Voigtlander X-Mount lens 23/35 Nokton :-) ? Especially 23 f1.2 seems not much reviewed on youtube and much controversial about its quality and sharpness. Wonder how it would perform on your test!
The 23 f/1.2 seems to suffer from a lot of field curvature. I remember seeing some reddit posts where even at f/8 at infinity, you would get only the focused area sharp. Everywhere else would be soft. It also suffers from weak close-up image quality like the 23 f/2 Fujicron. The rendering is kinda nice though especially for portraits.
A very good lens if you use the central part of the image. The CA that's clearly visible at the corners down to the medium apertures makes it a poor choice for any kind of use that needs rendering of details in the whole frame. Also my guess is the true T-stop of this lens is far darker than the 0.95 f-stop marking because the light falloff at this max aperture is quite extreme.
love your reviews man, laowa really making some crazy lenses :D I also wondered if you are going to review the fuji 150-600mm and 100-400mm as they are the next to the 70-300mm the main picks for telephoto lenses for fujifilm users and I would love to see how the image quality compares between those 3!
@@poltem1 yes, but it would be interesting to see if there is any difference between 24MP and 40MP on APS-C. The praised Sigma 18-35mm 1,8 had some trouble on the R7.
02:49 I guess it is going to be a running gag to have every lens tested at f/16 even if they cannot close that far. Much like as every tube station in London is located as deep as a 15 floor building.
Problems now for Chinese manufacturer is the license for AF and coating science. There's still a long way to go but embracing the competition is always good for customers and the industry in general.
@@abel___ yeah but i love wide lenses ( the wider the better without fish eye pretty much in my case ) so a 25mm f/0.95 or even af 20mm F/0.95 ( or if we are real greaty a 20mm T/0.95 ) would be right up my game ( physical sice isnt that big a deal for my btw so i dont mind if its big )
Yes, it is different. The element configuration has changed. This one seems a bit better optically, particularly in terms of contrast and ghosting; it has less spherical aberration.
Of all the issues (vignetting, CA, distortion, softness, flare-resistance), I would say vignetting is the easiest one to fix in post for both video and photo.
Could we please get a better balance of first party vs. third party lenses, Chris? Recently it seems the lesser brands have taken a considerable chunk out of your reviews. Thanks.
I love the shot of the elderly couple taken from the cave at 8:03

You never know...perhaps my Patreon supporters will know differently about that one... ;-)

and Tamron 150-500 for Fuji ;)
@@muttishelfer9122 to be fair he has reviewed that on Sony aps-c, so you can get a very good idea that the thing is mad sharp :P

Another concise and honest review. Thanks!
so thats a bit like 35mm F1.4 on full frame?
That’s actually good performance at f0.95. For video at low light this lens might work well. The focus throw is a little too short for video though.
Does CF stands for Christopher Frost?
Woooooo LAOWA x Christopher Frost , it could be fantastic
Cool & Fast
Widest - fastest APSC lens. Good one!
I think you can use it for FF at 1:1 ratio
Whish they had a cine version with a very long focus throw. LOCA performance is more important for me in video than sharpness.

I noticed that
Yes, editing error (I'm so used to writing f/16 there :-)
0:53
probably not f/16 since the lens isn't capable of that, nor is it on crop mode? Think that would be the uncropped FF coverage, right?
I have the 9mm for the sony from these guys....great lens
Peanus optics makes some nice optics
if they make it with Electronics and AF this will be a no brainer for everyone ..
auto focus at .95 is very difficult
Problems now for Chinese manufacturer is the license for AF and coating science. There's still a long way to go but embracing the competition is always good for customers and the industry in general.
I guess you hit the nail with licensing issue, that’s why Chinese brands are embracing LiDAR focusing manual lenses😂.
Does it have a hard-stop infinity focus setting?
Great review!
Lens only goes to F11, next scene: Focus pulling at F16 XD
Ooops! I'm so used to writing 'f/16' in that bit when editing haha
Hi can you review the 18mm version on m43 too? Thanks!!
wish it was made for a full frame ( would hit my fav lenth and F stop perfectly )
There's a 35mm 0.95 Laowa
@@abel___ yeah but i love wide lenses ( the wider the better without fish eye pretty much in my case ) so a 25mm f/0.95 or even af 20mm F/0.95 ( or if we are real greaty a 20mm T/0.95 ) would be right up my game ( physical sice isnt that big a deal for my btw so i dont mind if its big )
is there a DSLR version of this lens?
Wait you say F/16 isn't an option but 2:48
Editing error I guess?
Yes, editing error (I'm so used to writing f/16 there :-)
@Christopher Frost
Are these tests/results applicable to the m4/3 version of this lens?
"Hi, it's me, Chinese company Venus Optics". nice.
Nice!!!
THe nagain I cant think of a situation in which I would need corner sharpness at f0.95
Is it different optically from the MFT version though?
Yes, it is different. The element configuration has changed. This one seems a bit better optically, particularly in terms of contrast and ghosting; it has less spherical aberration.
What is "The rational Bible"... some sort of longitudinal aberration ? 🤔
Argus sound like a gamer name an edgy highschooler would use
Chris, are you telling us that you're the problem, it's you? (Referencing a recent Taylor Swift song?)
I expected better honestly, you can't call a lens an apochromat have corners like that. Really a shame I was interested in it for astrophotography
Who needs L or GM when you can get a CF lens!
What is the need of f16 whwn 99.9% of the reviews shows defraction at f11 with these 3rd party lenses even more than the native ones 🤔
it would be an excellent lens if it didn't have so much vignetting
Of all the issues (vignetting, CA, distortion, softness, flare-resistance), I would say vignetting is the easiest one to fix in post for both video and photo.

Gotta admit...I like Vignetting focuses the viewer...preferably though with an on/off switch..
