  • About time for a digital Casio watch review! This one has been been featured in several of my state of the collection videos but I have yet to make a review of my favorite Casio watch.. so here it is! This is a welcomed upgrade from the more retro styled Casio watches like the A158 that I have previously reviewed. The A168 comes with a slightly more substantial case, giving it some much needed wrist presence. It also comes with a mineral crystal as opposed to the normal acrylic one on older watches. There is an issue if you wish to put this watch on another strap.. more on that in the video itself.

    I have the A168WA-1WYEF, so a bit different, more classic in style and in its face and display perhaps, and when it came I was amazed at how good it looked on wrist. It looks great with a lot of clothes and is very legible, and pretty comfy. I think you could even pull it off as a dress watch as long as it wasn't super formal. It has a great blue electro lume display as well, which doesn't significantly affect the non-lumed legibility of the display in terms of clarity of the numerical digits versus, say, an A158-WA with its normally lighted display. The colored text on the face doesn't bother me in the slightest either, it's not so much "words" as just a part of the design language. The watch is really versatile. I really like the looks of the A168WEGG-1BEF as well, so the piece with the negative display kinda like this one but the more anthracite color steel.
    If anyone is thinking of going for a Casio piece in this vein, I would recommend to really take a look at all the variations in color, size and style, etc., and find one that particularly appeals to you, but definitely go for it, they are great, and there's no need to spend a fortune either. In particular the versatility is rather striking.

      Nice! That's more of the retro and classic Casio look like you said. These things are super comfortable on the wrist and work well with a wide range of attire. Totally agree with you. There is such a large amount of different colors and models available. Even though the general design language is pretty much the same, they all come with their own little twists.

    Advice: check the auto white balance on your camera. Its going all over the place.

    • @NordicWatchChannel
      @NordicWatchChannel  2 года назад +5

      Thanks you for the advice! I have noticed that also. I record using my iPhone so I'll have to check if there is something I can do about that. I've noticed that it helps calm it down to have something white in the frame at all times. Like a white glove up in a corner or something. Otherwise if there's just a watch in the frame and then I swoop in with white gloves, it goes kind of crazy :D

    how are you alright? I'm Brazilian, I'm using the translator to talk to you, nice watch, I'm looking to buy one of this, but I have a doubt... can I see the time well in a darker environment? because its dial is dark... because I have a Gshock with the dial all the way up, I can only see the time well in bright surroundings like in the sun

    • @NordicWatchChannel
      @NordicWatchChannel  3 года назад +3

      Hi! The translator seems to do a good job👍🏻. The dark display can be a bit difficult to read at times. I’ve gotten used to it over time so personally I think there is no problem. But in light or dark situations you might have to move the watch around a bit so that the light hits it from the right angle in order to read the time. But there is of course the background light which you can activate in darker surroundings!

    The main reason I still haven't dived into these retro Casios, is probably that my vintage digital Pulsar from ca 1982, with a couple of quirky features (the "Running Man" animated feature on the upper sub dial when using the timer, and a "memo texting" function which I still haven't fully figured out lol) kinda takes care of my needs of a retro digital watch. Ridiculous features, but I love it. Also actually great finish of the case, with both polished and brushed areas.
    However, I really like this look with a negative display which enhances the retro futuristic style. OTOH, when I was about to get a G-Shock square, I went for the stealthy totally blacked out version with minimal text on case and negative display. It looked bad ass, but turned out to be not so practical at work when legibility was required.
    How is this negative display when it comes to legibility on daily use, in your opinion?

    • @NordicWatchChannel
      @NordicWatchChannel  3 года назад +3

      That’s a fun looking retro watch😄 The legibility of the negative display is not that great, or at least not in intense sunlight. During a sunny day it might be difficult to tell the time ”at a glance” but that hasn’t bothered me (not yet at least..🤞🏼) Usually it’s still pretty easy to tell the time with some small movement of the wrist if it is unreadable at first glance :)

      Negative display isn't good if you discreetly need to glance for the time.

    I just got my first casio watch as a a present, the w59.
    Only thing is, it's a little small and the light is really weak. Still a nice watch.
    Now I kinda fell in love with this brand, because there are many different models in different colors, which I also like.
    Sure the w59 won't be my last casio watch.
    Also for the price it's really good, even better than I expected.

    replace a mechanism by a positive and this will be more practical. watches designers smoke something badly. steel case would not made self-cost much more. they have made in steel recently, but with girly dress look, inferior 30m water and 3 years battery (why? when cheapest models has 10 years battery). also with larger size to make larger the weight. as I've said - they should smoke something. no one makes quality and adequate specs digital watches. there are only cheap ones not bad and then goes marketing madness

      @@NordicWatchChannel Think they are saying that casio should make better quality digital watches rather than watches with chromed alloy cases and poor battery life. They manage to do so with analogue watches, why not do the same for those who want high quality digital?

    +1 for the mineral glass screen
    -2 for not making the screen sapphire
    -Infinity FOR NOT MAKING THE CASE OUT OF STAINLESS STEEL.....

    • @NordicWatchChannel
      @NordicWatchChannel  2 года назад +2

      That’s true. The plastic case makes it feel a lot cheaper. But the price would be at least double if it were made out of steel.

    Mine has just arrived. It looks so tacky I don't know whether it's even real.
    On a 7.5/7.75 inch wrist, it looks like I stole a child's watch. If it were made of black plastic it would go well with a Mickey Mouse backpack. But the worst thing is I can barely read the display. I fucked up!

    TBH if i buy Casio ill get 158-159-168 etc series as Retro and remind my childhood..i mean there is 99999x better options for if i want a regular watch..in my opinion.

    • @NordicWatchChannel
      @NordicWatchChannel  3 года назад

      I can totally understand that! I don't really have any "history" with retro Casio models so they don't have that kind of direct nostalgic feeling for me even though I like the retro style of them. This one has that retro kind of Casio feel but looks a bit more updated. But no watch is for everyone :) Love the more retro models too!
