Tom would be so proud to see his car at the NEC show. I couldn't help but think of him throughout this series and how tickled pink he would be since he is the man responsible for providing this beautiful car to Gary. God Bless you both.
The colour is spot on from what we can see on camera and then under the big NEC lights that take no prisoners. Well done and not removing the screens and not painting the bonnet or hatch is clearly the right move. Well judged- there’s a lesson there for every restorer about not going too far that the car then owes you too much.
Thanks Lee. I was really pleased with the match considering the roof and tailgate were original single stage paint and I clearcoated the sides.I haven’t touched the bumpers either but if they don’t polish up I’ll probably do them next. Regards.
What an artist you 'Are". God lives in the details. Your a Star mate. Magnetic to the camera and the camera never lies. Tremendous, extra - ordinary. Beautiful work. Many blessings.
Fantastic to see it finally restored to its former glory, you’ve done Tom proud there Gary! Just an aside, I used to put car alarms, stereos and phones in cars back when these were new. I did a GT for a client with a really good stereo upgrade, the car came to us prior to him collecting it new from the dealer. I was moving it from the carport to the workshop, reversing slowly towards the fence, still looking behind me, I put it in first and gently brought the clutch up, and as I turned to face front, there was clouds of smoke billowing from either side of the bonnet. I shouted fire to the other engineers and turned the car off. As I lifted the bonnet my colleague Peter was ready with the extinguisher. A ball of flame erupted across the top of the engine and we zapped it and put it out. Turned out that the car had ruptured fuel injectors from a faulty batch. Porsche did an amazing job of sorting it out, they repainted the engine bay too. The car was a guards red one like yours. I worked on that car many times over the years and loved it, a real treat to collect and deliver back to the client. I’ve always loved Porsches and finally bought my first 911 at the end of last year.
Great story! We never really find out the behind the scenes at dealers do we? I bought a brand new Boxter around the year 2000. It was a manual but after just as week it wouldn’t shift or select gear. After two recoveries they finally sorted it saying it was something to do with the selecter bushes. I never experienced another problem over the next four years and eventually sold it. Lovely car. Never even saw the engine!!
@@classic.obsession You never get all the story from the dealers, the local Audi dealership had my RS6 from the beginning of June last year, through to the last week of September, they had the engine out twice to attempt fixing the fault. I got it back and part-exed it for the 911 immediately. I found out later that the new owner had the same problem occur again!
Anything a bit involved they just farm it out the back door to local garages they trust. None of the specialists would entertain doing a Cambelt. All of them said it was much easier to work on 911’s. Joke!
@@classic.obsession That's a disgrace that a trust dealership wouldn't even attempt a cambelt service on a car they sold new. Everyone just wants the easy and profitable jobs and damn the wind to any of the others!
Gary, that paint job is one a professional would be proud of! This channel is such a pleasure to watch, your passion really shines through, thank you for all the effort you take in making them.
Great video Gary. I've been using HB Body products for several years now and really rate it highly, also Steve has given me lots of help and advice over the years. The 989 epoxy primer is exceptionally good, you can thin it right down and spray a thin coat over any burn-throughs to bare metal. Yes indeed, it would be nice to visit the HB Body plant in Greece, it is pretty much state of the art and is about the size of a small village! The 928 looked great on camera, you've done really well with it.
I looked at the car at the NEC before this episode went out and the car looked stunning the colour match was spot on and now watching this the hard work that went into getting it ready for the show makes you appreciate the work that went into it ,the thing about these episodes is they have content no fancy talk ect just a genuine enthusiastic approach to restoring classic cars .
You really have painting down pat....you have perfected your multi step sequence. There are lots of painters in this world, and each one uses a different technique. You really take the time to go thru each step. 👍👍
Great to see someone still using a suction feed Devilbiss spray gun when most peeps are on gravity SATA guns now .Saved all my pennies about 45 years ago for my first Devilbiss suction gun which surprisingly came stamped with my initials (JGA) from the factory just like yours .Flatting and polishing always a ball ache …although a bit easier now with da fine discs on a buzz pad which is probably twice as fast as the old school method we used to slog with blocks and flour paper between coats of cellulose ,which ( in my opinion ) still gives a far deeper lustrous shine with an unrivalled depth that modern acrylic paints struggle to match in a hard to describe esoteric way ,particularly on dark maroons and blacks .Top job there with the HB system which I have used many times with similar top results over the years including a full hit on a white Countach just over 10 years ago .Keep up the good work
Hey Gary - Great to see you at the show as usual and enjoyed our chat about the Porsche ! The two Georges and I went down to see the 928 afterwards and after watching the video, I cant beleieve how much work you put into this the days before the show; Got to say though the finish you have achieved is actually first class and the colour match is perfect! Before I just watched the video , it wasnt that easy to tell what had and hadnt been painted as the match was so good. I sat in the car at the show too - feels very nice , plush and clean and I loved the fact that you left Toms block on the pedal 🤩this is getting to be a lovely car and would look lovely on my driveway :-) On a different note , the production of your episodes has always been good but I think the last dozen or so have really gone to another levek ; the content is absolutely first class and maintains my interest and makes me look forward to the next one......Keep up the great work Mate ! Cheers, Stew
Great work Gary. I agree that the other sections looked fine as they were. It's very easy to spend other people's money. Look forward to it being reunited with the previous gentleman owner.
Hello Gary , this 928 GT is a masterpiece again. You put in so much time and effort. This car deserved to be rescued by yourself. Please be proud of the amazing results. 😊😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇩🇪
I know. Shocker! Just as people telling me ‘I must take the body off to do the lotus chassis’ I’ve been inundated with them telling me I have to remove glass and trim to do a proper job. Common sense has to prevail. Regards
Top job mate, you made the installation of those rear three quarter lights look a breeze, I have done one, admittedly on my own and made a right pigs ear of it - leaked for months until I got a pro to re-do it! Lovely finish, now can you come over and fix the roof on my R129 that refuses to work since I took the hard top off for Summer use! It's never going on again because every year it comes off there's trouble! Bloody cars eh?!!!! Great!!!!
Fabulous results from your hard graft Gary Definitely agree on the paint job you done, absolutely ridiculous prices for rubbers and trims, hopefully Motul chipped in?
Rare car indeed. I have one of the other ones in right hand drive in my possession. Its my father's car and he has lovingly restored it to pretty much the same level as yours. I believe it to be the only Tahoe Blue 928GT in existence. Over 200k miles and still driving like it did straight from the factory.
It’s weird. I don’t think people, even Porsche Officianados are aware of how rare these cars actually are and I am confused as to why so few were produced in RHD manual Gt’s. Regards.
Hi Gary, I saw your 928 at the NEC. You made a fantastic job of the paintwork. I ended up buying an R-Tech 181 mig based off your video. A lovely but of kit 👍🏻
Just started watching your vids , have to say very impressed. And now hooked . I have a two s197 Mustangs that ive done lots too. Once more really enjoy your work, and its real ie just you doing it.
Ffs I spent ages writing a comment and deleted it by accident 😢 , in a nut shell you did an absolutely amazing job on that very rare 928 it looks fantastic inside and out, I was waiting for this video for a while it did not disappoint, thank you
Gary, if it's a Guards Red, them from my recollection, its a single stage paint (no clear coat required). I own a 928 S4 in Guards Red and understand it to be a single stage paint (in the red) and not requiring any clear coat. Cheers
You’re quite right. But faced with the fact the bonnet and front wings had been repainted at some stage and clear coated, I took the decision to leave the roof and tailgate in single stage but repaint both sides in base and clear. Regards.
Gary's passion and dedication shines through in every video but the 928 seems to hold an extra special place. What a fabulous car
Certainly shines through 😊 paintwork looks awesome 👏
When Gary bought the car he said it wasn’t really his bag, but it seems to have grown on him and me !
@@rustyfox81 wait until he gets a proper drive in it when the cambelt is done. He'll be hooked
Tom would be so proud to see his car at the NEC show. I couldn't help but think of him throughout this series and how tickled pink he would be since he is the man responsible for providing this beautiful car to Gary. God Bless you both.
The music is so period and evocative of the era, genius.

Amazing work Gary. Also can't believe you achieved that level of work under such a deadline

Great video Gary - it was good to see the car at the show and just how good it now looks.
It was good as the show gave me the push to get going on it. Regards
I can now understand why you encouraged me to go and have a look at it at the show. Lots of hard work to get it there. Well done.
Great project Gary. I had a 1995 928 GTS in 2000 .... wish I hadn't sold it.
Hindsight Graham, we petrol heads all sold cars that we regret selling and still pine after.
Lucky bastard, you had the pleasure of owning one. My dream motor 928 since I was a boy. Many blessings.😅
