My husband and I have told our kids that they can live at home as long as they want as long as they are saving money. My 24 year old and 21 year old are looking to buy a house together now. They have about 130,000. Saved up. They both have no debt at all. I am so proud of them. One went into a trade and the other one got full scholarship to college. I am glad that we are debt free and can offer this option to our kids. We have always lived frugal.

I'm 63. I would not be able to afford my small home without the help from my 33 year old daughter who lives with me. We go half on all the bills. My ex husband left me in 2007 holding the bag after refinancing our home and it went into foreclosure and I almost lost it. I didn't get any alimony or other support from him. If it weren't for my daughter's help I would lose our home. The deed is in both our names now. I live out of the norm since she has to live with me and she with me in order to make ends meet. I get social security now and also work from home and she works from home as well. We too live under the poverty level but live within our means.

I have sold lots of used shoes on eBay and I have people message me and say I will buy them if you send a picture with the shoes on. Or they say did you sweat a lot in these. I ignore all those messages. People are nuts!

The resale market is so inundated right now filled with people who don’t work full time jobs. Prices are so low it doesn’t seem worth my time and efforts required.

I’m 43, at today’s prices and wages I would have to rent a room if I was back in my 20’s. I was very frugal in my 20’s and I survived on very little but I had no kids, no spouse or pets. I could live bare bones because it was just me. My mother in law moved in with us which is helping. She absolutely could not manage without our help. And I am looking to buy rural property that my children might need to have homes on in the future. I’m also encouraging them to focus on having a business or trade and to really think through a college education. There just isn’t enough bang for your buck with the price of higher education. It’s a trap I fell for and am still paying for twenty years later 🤦🏼‍♀️.

I'm 50. I'm confident that I could survive, but only because I grew up poor. Those of us that grew up poor have seen it all before. My momma taught me all the tips and tricks. I also have never had an ego about designer things and fancy cars. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the 'finer things in life," but I get a thrill out of making a penny stretch as far as possible. I can take the bus, shop at charity shops, furnish my place with only hand-me-downs and castoffs. I had my first job at 13 1/2.

I am a 82 year old widow in a small town. My monthly income is approx $2000. I own a 20 year old, two bedroom, double wide mobile home and pay $533 per month rent in a 55+ mobile home park. My car is 10 years old and paid for. Twice a week I volunteer at a food bank. We are allowed to take home items from the food bank. It wasn't till last month I realized I actually had a side hustle. This has allowed me to save money and eat well. House and car insurance is a big expense for me. But as long as I save each month, by the time it is due I can pay for it. I have been a frugal minimalist my whole life.

Feeling very blessed to have a home, savings and able to retire and continue living here. Grateful for Social Security in addition to our savings. We started saving when we were married at 18. Always lived frugal. Date Day once a week out to eat and use coupons. Dairy Queen burger basket and drink BOGO for $8. Watched the kids play at the park. Tons of free fun stuff to do. Shop at Aldi. Get most things at thrift stores. Donate regularly to church and food pantries. Live below our income and happy! Gotta admit the 14-year-old dog is getting expensive but she’s worth every penny. We love her.

Besides the "gig" and You tuber options runnng out, outrageously violent, abusive people and crime are a factor now in what people can do to gain extra income. There is no way I would own a rental property or rent out a garage, etc., because there have been so many problems with squatters lately. When you want to call off the deal, you can't! People need to try to grow gardens to save on food as best they can. Turn off the lights, turn down the heat, back off the Intetrnet and streaming services - read "how to" books! In other words, do what you can at home. It's safe, and you don't have to use fuel. We are in for it, for sure. 😟

My son has a side hussle as a personal assistant for $600 a week for 20 hours a week.
Thank goodness I'm debt free and mortgage free; however, I live on a small SS of $712 a month. Yep, I was a stay-at-home-mom and that's all I got after a divorce. I'll be 74 this September, 2024. I live in middle America and found United Healthcare that covers virtually everything and then some. They provide $248 a month toward utilities, no copays, $5,000 for dental and more. I don't pay anything for coverage. What they give you depends on how depressed your county is. All that said, I manage to save about $400 a month. I'm good at budgeting for property taxes, car insurance and house insurance. I do spurge once a month for lunch at a restaurant with local friends. If I can do it, you can do it. I don't feel deprived.

There are some “strange cats” out there who are willing to pay to indulge their fetishes. This one seems strange but rather benign compared to some of the other weirdness that people pay for on a regular basis. If someone (usually women) can make some money selling photos of themselves that doesn’t show their faces or other more private areas that are typically covered, I can’t fault them for doing so. This doesn’t require any physical contact so there is an element of safety as well (as strange as it is).

Union taxi drivers had company vehicles provided to transport customers. Uber drivers must absorb all these costs themselves and try to turn a profit. Good luck with that!

People before us earned more money a month than what we earn or will ever earn a month. First of all. Secondly we grew up with these things and parents using TV as the babysitter, so we got bombarded with advertising. Thirdly, rent has more than 4x higher than just 15 years ago. A bottle of water costs 4x as much as what you paid in your day when you were thirsty leaving the house. You earnt 4x more than us and you paid 4x less than us for the most basic needs like housing, food and drinks.
Don't pretend that the generations before us didn't buy a house by the time they were 20 because that was the norm. If I worked for 60 years, I still can't afford a house without parents support which 30% of young people their parents are legally allowed to make them homeless by 18, which is outdated from your generation.
You wouldn't be able to survive working and paying rent, you can't even leave the house without ending up spending $100 just to go to work.
And last but not least, you could afford tobacco! Nobody living alive today can even afford what you could afford in your day.

Another idea as a side hustle is selling items online through online auctions. It’s not guaranteed money but I know multiple people who do it and do well. Also, my uncle does carpentry and woodworking out of his garage.

I believe that selling one's body, even photos of it, is degrading for that person's dignity. I can sell my time, my labor, even my knowledge, but I dispose of my body with dignity and respect. It's not for strangers to use to satisfy their fetishes. But this is just the way I've been educated.

Yes, because we live such a minimal life still and have each other. Other people’s stuff just has no allure. Owning very little is just so relaxing. And we can save for a particular experience if we want. So many free and healthy entertainments in life. Learning about new things is probably what we do most and that is pretty much free.

I say the only way to REALLLY do well is train for a higher paying career AND be frugal, HVAC or being a plumber is probably a lot better financial move than geting a masters degree in Sociology or "women's studies" also... Join the military to pay for college to avoid student debt.

I can't believe you can get a decent studio or 1br for $700-$900ish in California. I can't even find that in Arizona.
I was recently finally approved for disability, and desperately seeking something in the $700 range so I can escape living in my van.

I am a 61 year old retired school teacher who works part-time. If I were starting in education , today I would have to have a roommate or live with a parent. Rent in Colorado is very high along the front range where most people live and work. i was fortunate to refinance when the interest rates were low so my mortgage is about half of what others pay for rent. ( my mortgage is my only debt. )There are worse things than living with other people to make ends meet. We can all do what we need to do to get by. It just isn't very fun. I am also worried about seniors because it can be harder for them to work.

You are absolutely correct about the food delivery gig apps. Without tips, you are not even breaking even. And people have cut back on tips at the same time the gig app companies have cut pay. You are getting $2 per delivery and sometimes less. These companies are run by scum.

Back when I still lived in the US, you could legally sell up to 5 cars a year without registering as a car dealer, so that's what I did. If you look at any car make/model today you'll see there's a price range that it sells for. Real simple: you buy at the low end of that price range, and you sell at the high end. You might want to give the car a thorough cleaning, waxing, and fill up all the fluids. Preferrably, you want to buy through an advertisement and not a used car dealer, and sell at an online auction.

My husband is 75. I am 69. Both retired on Social Security. Have 3 rental units which we bought with cash 15 years ago and bring us $1,000/mo net. Live in the Rio Grande Valley (southern tip of Texas) in a nice RV resort in a 600 sf mobile home (paid for in cash). Our land rent is $300/mo plus electricity. All other utilities included. Two vehicles both paid for. My husband does handyman work for other residents in our park, especially single women. If we didn't live down here, and we had car or mortgage payments, no, we couldn't make it. I don't know how the rest of the country is doing it.
Some of the things other people in our park do is dog sitting/walking, watching other's houses during the summer (lots of snowbirds down here), caring for other's gardens, house cleaning, take elderly people to the doctor, renting out their RV's during the winter, and power washing (houses, RV's, and driveways).
