Yep, most music in Splatoon uses a made-up language full of distorted gibberish. The gimmick their OST has is that there exist dozens of made-up bands and music producers who each cover a unique genre giving it diversity. The genre featured the most is from idol groups who host all the in-game events, they have the music closest to "J-Pop".
@@TiganaMith I completely agree, I always wanted to see a gorillaz splatoon cross over. Considering they had Ace of the PPG cover for awhile, it doesn’t even feel that far fetched to me
So Splatoon 1+2 is probably up there imo as one of the most underappreciated soundtracks in gaming today. Even though it's barely brought up in conversation, music is a massive part of Splatoon's identity, both in presentation and form. It's so important in fact, that the music that plays in Splatoon is entirely diagetic and performed by "in-universe bands" made by similarly different bands in the real world, all of whom have their own sound, style and aesthetic. It feels like a very DIY, local-music-scene vibe, with everyone just shooting off with whatever they can come up with. From J-Pop idols to garage rock and punk bands to local electronic artists to jazz fusion perfectionists. The music is widely varied yet still carries the identity of the world that it comes from. You can tell when you're hearing two songs by the same band when you're paying attention, just like you can tell when someone new has taken the stage. And that music scene evolves too. It was recently revealed that the former lead idol duo from Splatoon 2, "Off the Hook", while no longer the stars of the show, have stepped down to help more up-and-coming talent, lending their talents to a collab with a new, jazz-rock styled band called Damp Socks on one of their new songs. It genuinely feels like a live music scene, and the fact that the developers and producers of this game are putting that much care and attention into the fictional music scene of this fictional video game world that mostly functions as a multiplayer shooter is really incredible.
Yeah splatoon without it’s music is like a boat without its sails everything in splat is rooted in its music. almost every important character is a musician in some way almost everyone important event was backed with iconic music my god I love it
I always got the impression that Splatoon mostly approached a like 90s pop rock sound. I'm no expert though. The Voices I know are meant to sound like what if a wet creature tried to bubble words. Also Splatoon is like a post apocalyptic setting or something and mutated squids took over society I think.
Specifically humans destroyed themselves in a huge war that also melted the ice caps resulting in the extinction of all mammals and then much much later various sea creatures evolved to live on land not just squids but also jellyfish, crabs, sea urchins, sharks, sea anemones, sea slugs, various fish and even kelp evolved humanoid forms, there was one mammal left though a cat named Judd who was made immortal by his scientist owner and placed in stasis until he was awoken, he now spends his time judging the various ink based sports played by Inkling youths similar to how he was used during the war to judge which side was going to win in a conflict, the same stasis pod Judd was placed in also was designed to create a clone of him if needed and upon being accidentally triggered created Lil' Judd. I wrote out all of this just to show how insane Splatoon lore is and this is all canon info.
Well, it does sound a bit like 90's Nickelodeony... but also not. There's a variety of feelings of familiarity to be found in Splatoon songs, but it's also its own thing entirely.
Really happy to see Splatoon, I love all the high energy it has and variety too. Felt compelled to mention but I'm not sure if it's correct anymore. Whilst it has a lot of varying genres, it is generally referred to as Squidcore.
The music in Splatoon really shows the high level of commitment the team have to the setting. Everything is in service of the aesthetic and core concept.
@@simonrockstreama poplar game is popular usually because it has good music with all its other good qualities Do a small bit of digging below the surface and nothing really stands out
Splatoon is the game that pushed me over the edge of considering Nintendo to have the finest music department in gaming. They wholeass invented an entire world of music, distinct genres, and representative bands each with fully unique, identifiable characters for their post apocalyptic universe where humanity died out and the fish evolved to replace them with their own culture and language. Splatoon oozes identity and as a result, it has a huge propensity to suck people in and get them attached to the world and its characters if not the gameplay. Why Nintendo holds Mario back from experimenting in its RPGs when it can just wiggle its little finger and create something like Splatoon absolutely mystifies me.
They don't have to try as hard with mario being such as huge name, or at least that's how it comes off. They know people will snatch up a mario game regardless; its identity has long solidified as a platformer anyone can play. It has become more challenging later in its games to keep up with demand for difficulty. Simple premise, if any story is necessary. Platformers are better for it in my opinion though, donkey kong excelled at this through its levels on the snes. It helped that a lot of the levels often progressed or changed for the next level to make more coherent if the weather was different in the next level. Music added to it.
Splatoon's music is pretty unique and crazy for games. But it's also great. It's also... not that recent anymore. The first game came out in 2014, so that's 8 years ago already. Still feels fresh though. They've also held concerts with the in-game idols being holograms in them.
The title is supposed to be like you getting a surge or endorphins from listening to this song. But Nintendo is addicted to wordplay and so they mixed Dolphin. 'haha sea creature pun'
Music is a huge theme in this game. I like how the genres sound like they are their own thing and definitely belong in this squid kid universe. something about it also sounds so 90's to me. fashion is also a big thing in this series and I get a 90's feel from that as well.
splatoons gameplay is 4 v 4 third person shooter with the goal usually being to paint the arena rather than kill the enemies. Being a half squid, you can travel vertically up painted walls and sneak around in the ink, which is what makes it specifically unique in gameplay. its soul and theming is about being expressive, fun and uniquely yourself. It's LOVES art. The lobby/plaza showcases art by its users; about pride, memes, silly or just plain good. Music is pivotal to the plot, with one of the songs -literally- changing people for the better. Your equipment in game is clothing that shows on your character with over 150 different types in any given catagory, so any user could have the exact same stats as another user in theory but they may looked completely different. Even your gender, species and hair go a ways to making each character feel unique. There are usually regular running events in game that let the user base play for an arbitrary team (ketchup or mayo, sci fi vs fantasy, trick vs treat etc) and usually the plaza becomes filled with silly art having pride for your thing, Suddenly everyones dying on a hill about how much better werewolves are than vampires, or how waffles are the superior breakfast choice compared to pancakes. Then the final weekend of the event has different music, unique stages and puts everyone in their colored uniform with matching ink to put your silly opinion on the line. Also on a personal note, ive attended some splatoon tournaments as a spectator and its BY FAR one of the most lovely diverse and tolerant communities in videogames outright, so the message of being yourself is not lost on the community whatsoever

Splatoon characters speak gibberish, yes. They sing gibberish too, and their voices are processed through an oscillating upper frequency gate to make it sound the way it does. The soundtrack is awesome in general. I recommend Spicy Calamari Inkantation, personally.
"Spla2n" doesn't really work as a name, I'm sure it was considered, but every language would pronounce the "2" differently. You'd end up with it looking like "Spladeuxn", "Splazwein", even "Splanin" in the game's home region, effectively a completely different name for every region, which isn't super good for marketing or for people trying to talk about the game.
It also runs into what I call the "New 3DS problem", because when you see the logo, you know what they mean by "New 3DS" or "Splat2n", but when you hear it, it's super unclear what thing is being talked about. Did they get a *new* 3DS, or a "New 3DS"? Splatoon, or Splat2n?
It's interesting to have a focused listen to some Splatoon music; normally you're so focused on the chaos that's going on in the game that it kind of just gets tuned out. For me at least
One of my favorite songs from Splatoon, definitely should check out some other stuff, each song has a story with it, with their own in universe bands for the songs.
I've always wanted to see someone react to a Splatoon track!! I love how catchy, fun, and unique each song is. The games (which are third-person shooters with 4v4 battles) are indeed high-energy and colourful! A single battle lasts 3 to 5 minutes depending on the battle mode you play, so you get very little downtime. That reflects in the battle music. I've been playing Spla2n for 4 years and the playerbase is still going strong :) Splatoon 2's soundtrack is quite diverse and I find it really interesting! Endolphin Surge is probably my favourite battle track from Spla2n that wasn't added in a later update (Entropical, Blitz It!, and Fins & Fiddles take the cake for my favourites). Other people have already said it, but the world of Splatoon is a post-apocalyptic Earth where all mammals were wiped out and marine life evolved to live on land. They've developed their own chaotic and vibrant culture.

Splatoon has this thing when there are a lot of bands and each band has his own genre so that's why most of the time you can like a splatoon song and hate another one (at least this is for me). Splatoon music is a lot all over the place, actually. All music in the games is made by in universe bands. The story in splatoon is very light but the lore is deep. There's a lot of genre variety and fusion of genres, as lore wise the world is post apocalyptic - many man made disasters occurred in a short time frame, humanity was wiped out, and eventually sealife evolves to be land dwelling - and take on human music styles but mix and match them a lot. I'd say there's generally a bit of a j-pop influence to most of the music but at the same time very little of it is pure, average j-pop. Not one of my favorites from Splatoon, I hope you listen to some others, especially from Splatoon 1 or the weird experimental tunes from the story modes
The title is just a pun
Endorphin surge
I prefer undertow but this song is nice too
You should listen to all the splatoon 1 music it's so good I personally like them over splatoon 3
Splat2n shouldve been the name idc
Yea story mode is not very complicated gameplay wise as it is a multiplayer focused game but lore wise it's pretty deep and not a lot of people know this
Splat2n
pls
