I love your breakdown of one of my favorite video game sound tracks. As someone who loved fusion back in the 80s, the Persona 5 soundtrack is exciting and smooth all at the same time. It was great to see your excitement about the chord progressions and "left turns" as I like to call them that the music takes.
I remember when I first played the game. The music was definitely what I noticed first. When ‘life will change’ played in that first part in the casino, I thought “yeah, this game’s gonna be good”.
I'm so happy my first experience with the persona 5 ost was from playing the game 100% blind. One of my favorite moments of all of gaming is the moment I first heard the version of Life Will Change with lyrics. At the end of every palace the instrumental version plays instead of the respective palace theme, but near the end of the game, it's replaced with the version with lyrics. The goosebumps I got were insane. I wish I can relive that, it was amazing.
It really gave the vibes of "ok now shit is getting serious" when that happened. Persona 5 is one of the best examples of not only a great ost, but a great ost that perfectly complements the story the game wants to tell.
When you were playing Butterfly Kiss, it basically just revealed to me that it’s a variation of the chord changes for Tartarus from P3 and my mind got blown wide open. I love this channel!
He's gotta do Nier Automata next. Only problem is he probably won't do wretched weaponry, my favorite track from the game which isn't very popular and is buried in the middle of disc 2 lol
I've said it for years... but there there just something totally wild about how the Japanese do jazz and funk that it completely out there, and I love it.
Totally agree. The Consouls do vgm jazz covers and one of their guys got me on to J.A.M which led to Soils and Pimp Sessions and then I found 1970s(!) stuff like Jiro Inagaki which is brilliant. I was saying to a friend just the other day that the level of musicianship in J-pop is very high compared with current Western pop. Eg Penthouse has Cateen on keys!
@5ilver42 Speaking Of Japanese Jazz, I Think You Would Definitely Love The Racing Lagoon OST Because There Is A Ton Of Jazz In It. There Is So Much Jazz To The Point Where It's Almost A Sin!!!!😎😎😎😎😎😎🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I definitely heard the Steely Dan, reminded me of some Peg. Great ost to cover, I absolutely love these more complex chord structures trail blazing these more popular franchises, gives us hope for the future of vg ost's.
Generally, I find that the Japanese VGM composers draw a lot of inspiration from jazz. Explains why The Consouls jazz covers always enhance even already great tunes eg ruclips.net/video/GwYFib4RsIw/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/RJfDxsEPcFc/видео.html

It is crazy How jazzy this whole soundtrack is and how many people from all walks of life Love it. One of the best Video Game Soundtracks out there. Loving the video and the effort and love put into it!
City Ruins(Rays of Light) from NieR Automata, like the rest of the OST for the game, is awesome. Since the story is set in a ruined land, all of the ambietal OSTs like this one and "Amusement Park" really give off a creepy but beutiful and emotional vibe. You should reaaly check it out if you have the time.
This soundtrack rivals some of my favorite albums of all time. The first playthrough of the game was my intro to Persona in general, and the music fit the style so well that it trapped me into series instantly. Beneath the Mask, especially the rainy version just hit the perfect spot. Rivers in the Desert was such a banger too, my whole chatroom knew it was coming and lost it when it hit. That's a sign that they did something very right the whole way through musically. It hits the highs and lows so well, and teases you with full instrumental versions of tunes just to come back and slap amazing vocals into an already amazing jam. Cannot stress enough that this game was a masterpiece to me. Great video too! Love the "woah" moments to the chord progressions and the smile they brought
The music and style to this game set it apart from any other RPG I have ever played. I am so glad you broke down some of the music theory behind a few songs (and I really hope you do a few more). As someone who has never studied, I was able to follow along, but I know there is so much more to understand
There's this Indonesian Jazz singer that does all of these weird chords stuff in the context of Jazz. Marini Nainggolan. Good stuff, one of my favorites

If you haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend the Metagroove album by the J-MUSIC Ensemble. They took a bunch of tracks from the P5 soundtrack and basically turned them into standards. (It also features Adam Neely on a song)

I love ur videos btw, I’ve been watching a ton of them recently and they really make me understand the music in a deeper way than I usually do. Keep up the good content 👍🏼
It's such a joy to watch you discover this music because you don't miss a single detail. I found myself nodding and cheering as you'd find those little nuggets of harmony that most folks would overlook.
Not only is the music of this game masterfully crafted, but the entire Video game is a masterpiece. It bleeds and screams art. I wish more games would be like this.
Am I the only one who does not understand his explanations but loves watching how fast he is able to deconstruct the music and play the songs on the piano?
It's just such a pleasure to listen to someone who's able to play along to something they've only just heard. Kudos to the hard work you've clearly put into your passion, you've got a new subscriber; and that's not even mentioning the fact that I LOVE Persona in general, and that's how I got here.
Oh that segue into Kneebody was so fitting. Love how when the staccato of the saxophone kicks in, it just teases you with breaks and pseudo time signature shifts, and then just loops back in to the percussion with the original backing. It forces your brain to split in half just to keep on top of it, but never feels accidental. Honestly yeah, I get vibes of that in Persona music a ton!
I can't even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this. I've watched it several times over, since yesterday. The chorus in Last Surprise, made me say "woooooooo" just the same as you sir. Such a good track and Shoji Meguro hits hard with those creative chord progressions. You nailed it.
YES! YES! YES!! You never see it coming!!🎵🎶 Wake Up, Charles Cornell did Persona 5~🎵🎶 Edit: I would lobe to see a part 2 for this one with Wake Up! Get Up! Get Out There! and Rivers in the Desert.
I wanna see him react to Whims of Fate so bad :| The way that track transitions through different grooves and builds out the chord structure from ALL the instruments/vocals rather than relying on a single instrument to drive the entire structure....just amazing.
ooh man i really love how you found that d in all those chords in tokyo daylight, it makes me want to jump into some kind of musical+thematic analysis--there's a line in the piece "life will change" that says "can't hold on or life won't change" and there's a sense of apathy the protagonists are constantly fighting against that permeates the daily lives of the japanese citizens going about their lives...and tokyo daylight plays during the portions of the game when you're out and about in the different cities! so i thought that was really fascinating that you isolated that without even knowing anything about the game's plot...that maybe they're a bit unconsciously "holding on" to that status quo. would definitely love to see you do a part two because the soundtrack is phenomenal and has some incredible stuff in it the further you get into it
This game is one of the few games you can spend over 100 hours on listening to the same few songs on loop and not want to pull your ears from your skull - there's so much satisfaction and variance in the music that you don't get bored or annoyed by it even after listening to it for a long time.
I've been playing the game since it went on GamePass earlier this week/last week and like...normally I put a stream or other video on while I'm playing games but as soon as I heard the intro song I KNEW I just couldn't do that and give the game it's dues. Holy FUCK is the music so good all the time.
I always enjoy watching these, cause he's got almost nothing negative to say, I learn something about the pieces, and I enjoy his enthusiasm with just about every note he hears or plays. Very swag, 10/10, would recommend.
16:30 it's not a complex melody that doesn't disturb the experience. I haven't even heard (up to this video) how many chord changes occur all the time, that's how little disturbing is. It's incredible. You're incredible too.
It finally happened! Woohoo! This soundtrack has so many great tunes. Given how much he seemed to enjoy it, I'd love to see a Pt 2 looking at some other tracks! Watching Charles try to decipher the chord progressions is amazing hahaha

It actually surprises my that Charles hadn’t reacted even once to a Kirby song. The OST of Kirby games are just so amazing, The 8-Bit Band cover of Metaknight’s Revanche even won a Grammy half a year ago! So I would be really exited for a Kirby reaction!
I don’t have anything to say but just wanna boost this comment up
What nice business of yours. I appreciate that
Sooo true! That arrangement for Revenge of Meta Knight is out of this world!
👍🏼The Consouls also did a great cover of Butter Building ruclips.net/video/dMaIw13PMhM/видео.html
I agree. I have a sweet spot for the Mass Attack soundtrack
Honestly, the fact that you’re just now finding out about this series’s music is something I wish I could do for myself again
I love the bass lines and the use of the Hammond organ in this games OST! It was a pleasant Surprise to see that Charles looked into this music, I never saw it comiiiing
Hahajahahah nice one
I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE. 👏
Same with the Rhodes piano
As good as the harmonies and melodies are in this soundtrack, the rhythm section is my favorite part. The drums groove so hard and those basslines are slick as hell
Same here
This game really got me interested in learning music, and the rhythm is easily the part that hooks me the most. The basslines in this game just make me feel something indescribable. I want to learn how to play because of this game
@@NinjaPickle Yes!! I'm a bassist so reading this comment brings me so much joy. Go find yourself a bass and a teacher (if you can afford it; otherwise youtube tutorials are your best friend) and start learning! Take it slow, stick with it, and have fun. That's my advice. Cheers
The bass is always so good
Getting P5 fans into Kneebody is such a noble pursuit
I’m bout to check em out!
I love your breakdown of one of my favorite video game sound tracks. As someone who loved fusion back in the 80s, the Persona 5 soundtrack is exciting and smooth all at the same time. It was great to see your excitement about the chord progressions and "left turns" as I like to call them that the music takes.
I love seeing his face journey as he listens to each piece for the first time. I always get a kick out of it.
I totally get you, but for me this moment was for Rivers in the Desert. The instrumental version of that song is ok, but the lyrics one is amazing.
oh bruh i read it and thought u meant u were a blind person for a min
It really gave the vibes of "ok now shit is getting serious" when that happened. Persona 5 is one of the best examples of not only a great ost, but a great ost that perfectly complements the story the game wants to tell.
YUP HOLY SHIT THE FEELS
When you were playing Butterfly Kiss, it basically just revealed to me that it’s a variation of the chord changes for Tartarus from P3 and my mind got blown wide open. I love this channel!
Whenever he does a soundtrack I love, it never feels like he did enough 😂 GIVE ME MORE
I discovered so much good VGM from listening to The Consouls that if Charles covered every OST I like, he'll be analysing VGM for months!
I feel that I need a cowboy bebop part 2
He's gotta do Nier Automata next. Only problem is he probably won't do wretched weaponry, my favorite track from the game which isn't very popular and is buried in the middle of disc 2 lol
I absolutely love how shocked and surprised all these tracks are making you. The sharp right turns into "what the heck did I just hear" are great
I've said it for years... but there there just something totally wild about how the Japanese do jazz and funk that it completely out there, and I love it.
RIGHT?! Stuff like Polkadot Stingray and Zutomayo are super pop-y but the jazz roots make them absolutely stellar.
Even pop and rock gets this treatment. Lamp is one of, if not my favorite band ever and they do this very often.
@@neatchee_prime there’s just a random jazz solo near the end of loneliness by zutomayo and it’s fire
Being a fan Persona fan and listening to these songs many, many...many times, this was a delight to watch. Now do 4!
Yess, the bathhouse club beat had me bobbing my head the whole dungeon.
I definitely heard the Steely Dan, reminded me of some Peg. Great ost to cover, I absolutely love these more complex chord structures trail blazing these more popular franchises, gives us hope for the future of vg ost's.
Also Jamiroquai
Generally, I find that the Japanese VGM composers draw a lot of inspiration from jazz. Explains why The Consouls jazz covers always enhance even already great tunes eg ruclips.net/video/GwYFib4RsIw/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/RJfDxsEPcFc/видео.html
this came up on recommends and i’m grateful it did. your understanding of music is astonishing, you are very obviously talented. i love the persona 5 soundtrack a lot and music is a passionate hobby of mine but there is much i could learn. i’m happy you made this video breaking down the songs, and to me you do it so easily and looks like you are having fun figuring the notes out. Your passion for music really shows, i’m happy you are doing what you love. thanks
Less well-known, you should definitely check on the Catherine's OST, another Shoji Meguro masterpiece
Oh yes i also love this Soundtrack
Even less known, I would suggest the Trauma Center series, I was so reminded of these games when I played P5 !
Also Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2, those games are masterpieces alone but their OSTs are even better
yes please!! Loved Catherine's soundtrack
the songs will play everytime you go into battle but somehow you wont be sick of it in this game
I'd love to see a part 2 or an analysis of other music in the Persona Franchise.
Layer cake, the days my mother was there and beneath the mask were some of the missing pieces on this video, should make a part 2.
@@djoxer Love those tunes! The Consouls and J-Music Ensemble covers are always on heavy rotation in my YT and Spotify playlists!
Iwatodai Dorms tho
@@ShadowOfMassDestruction that song is such a banger.
@@djoxer I want to see his take on Gentle Madman
It is crazy How jazzy this whole soundtrack is and how many people from all walks of life Love it. One of the best Video Game Soundtracks out there. Loving the video and the effort and love put into it!
Nobody sent this man Beneath the Mask or Life Will Change? We're gonna need a part 2 for this OST!
Yeah, what the hell, they are both perfect for a video like this
I was waiting for those! Will just have to keep listening to the covers by The Consouls and J-Music Ensemble
I want a part 2 w/ layer cake, rivers in the desert, life will change, and others!! Love your stuff, keep it up!
Leitmotivs are so strong in this game that he almost played "Beneath the mask" by accident. 2:05
Agreed! It's almost overkill at times, but damnit if it doesn't work for carrying the emotional through-line
So cool
Musical foreshadowing
That’s fascinating. I’ve always loved the way Persona games use musical callbacks and motifs so everything is the same “flavor”
Shoji meguro does it almost too much.
Every game has at least 20 variations
First time playing persona 5 blind. I loved it. The music, the action. There was no dull moment
City Ruins(Rays of Light) from NieR Automata, like the rest of the OST for the game, is awesome. Since the story is set in a ruined land, all of the ambietal OSTs like this one and "Amusement Park" really give off a creepy but beutiful and emotional vibe. You should reaaly check it out if you have the time.
yessssss nier is so good
Amusement Park is my favorite!
Yes
Beautiful song is killer
9:48 the song Butterfly Kiss reminds me of Jazz Crimes by Joshua Redman. Killer tune!!
Definitely make a part 2. This soundtrack has so many great songs!
“I’ve been waiting for this!”
I’d love to see a part two, there’s so many more tracks in this game that it would be super cool to see you figure out.
I'm late to the party but I've been waiting until I finally got around to playing P5 to come back and watch this and boy it did not disappoint
There's this Indonesian Jazz singer that does all of these weird chords stuff in the context of Jazz. Marini Nainggolan. Good stuff, one of my favorites
As a Persona fan and lover of music I was humming along and smiling through the whole video. Awesome job man, subscribed
If you ever decide to look at this game again, make sure to listen to Layer Cake. One of my favourite songs from the whole series
Can I recommend the cover by The Consouls? ruclips.net/video/M77cv6026Ss/видео.html
So many good songs from P5, if only I could get Charles to go through each and every one of them… Life could be a dream 🐒
layer cake ❤
Layer cake is so good
How Steely Dan is the Persona 5 soundtrack? About as much as 14:40 is The Caves of Altamira. ruclips.net/video/m_5MtGCWImE/видео.html
Charles, you absolutely NEED to check out the Sonic Mania OST. Without a doubt one of the best modern videogame soundtracks out there.
It's a good game Indeed! But I'd rather like it of him to check out the "Risk Of Rain Soundtrack". 😊

persona’s soundtrack is what got me hooked to the series all those years ago. i’m glad that its timelessness still shows years later and hooks in others!
thank you for doing this, ever since i found your channel i hoped you’d cover this incredible soundtrack
Hymn of the Soul is literally my life blood. It just sends my soul FLYING when I hear it. This soundtrack and Final Fantasy X are literally my fave scores for videogames.
Butterfly Kiss is my alarm sound each morning, had a physical reaction when it started 😂
I just like that he’s reacting to this is real time. Just when he thinks he figures it out, “WOO!!?”
I’m writing a paper for my Research Methods class on the music of Persona 5. You my friend…have just become a source for this paper 😈❤️
I heard the Steely Dan in there too! That part played at 4:34 is the riff used in the song Peg. Also reminded me of riffs from Josie.
Incredible video!! Thanks for checking the soundtrack for my favorite game, I know you are very limited in time and video length but that was barely a scratch on the surface of the game amazing ost. Love your amazing content, keep at it man ❤

You're the man Charlie! You got the themes down to this really well. Loved your take on it. Tons of more tracks from the Persona series that I would love to hear your take on.
Thanks Charles! This one's definitely a crowd favourite. J-Music Ensemble and The Consouls and Sapphire have also done some amazing Persona covers but love hearing you play too! Edit: Would definitely like a Kneebody video
It is my birthday tomorrow (1st Oct) and I'm so glad I managed to snatch the bundle up before my birthday! Always wanted to improv, tried teaching myself but literally could never, it sounded alright but could be better. Thanks Charles, can't wait to start!!
Superb! Not an easy analysis to do at any level of musicianship.... and you do it on the fly. Absolute legend.
PLEASE do a part 2, there's so much more to hear! This game has my favorite soundtrack in forever and while I dont understand much of the music theory you talk about I love seeing your reactions and how you enjoy what I enjoy
If you haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend the Metagroove album by the J-MUSIC Ensemble. They took a bunch of tracks from the P5 soundtrack and basically turned them into standards. (It also features Adam Neely on a song)
💯 That's a brilliant album, also brilliant was The Consouls' livestream (sponsored by Atlus) ruclips.net/video/_UhXA1j9mjA/видео.htmlsi=2fYh2lAJV01Z-sCF
If he had assessed Take Over and Rivers in the Desert I feel like he would have been blown away. Loved seeing these songs being broken down though!!
AGREED
You know the groove is swinging when Charles starts singing
I feel like it would be really nice to have the whole song/section of the soundtrack play at the beginning or smth and then go through it in detail like u usually do.
Would love to see even more of you going through this OST, it's fantastic from front to back!
YESSSSSSSSS !!! I freaking love this game, and to see Charles breaking down the music is awesome!!!
OH MY GOD I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO EVER SINCE I SUBBED TO YOU!!! THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT THIS GAME
Not only is the music of this game masterfully crafted, but the entire Video game is a masterpiece.
It bleeds and screams art. I wish more games would be like this.
Man to see u go through the appreciation I’ve known about Shoji Meguro’s Persona scores is very pleasing to me and validates so much.
Am I the only one who does not understand his explanations but loves watching how fast he is able to deconstruct the music and play the songs on the piano?
Meh
It's just such a pleasure to listen to someone who's able to play along to something they've only just heard. Kudos to the hard work you've clearly put into your passion, you've got a new subscriber; and that's not even mentioning the fact that I LOVE Persona in general, and that's how I got here.
I just love the stay he gets stunned everytime lmao
I absolutely LOVED this. I hope you do a part 2 to hear more of this amazing soundtrack
It's about time you got to this :) some of the best video game OSTs out there!
Honestly yeah, I get vibes of that in Persona music a ton!
you know why? because you never see it coming.
YES! YES! YES!!
You never see it coming!!🎵🎶
Wake Up, Charles Cornell did Persona 5~🎵🎶
Edit: I would lobe to see a part 2 for this one with Wake Up! Get Up! Get Out There! and Rivers in the Desert.
Those were the exact songs I was going to recommend!
Also P5 Strikers! It's great!
I wanna see him react to Whims of Fate so bad :| The way that track transitions through different grooves and builds out the chord structure from ALL the instruments/vocals rather than relying on a single instrument to drive the entire structure....just amazing.
I'd love for him to listen to Whims of Fate and Layer Cake! Hope he will do a part 2 cuz the whole P5 soundtrack is incredible!
I really want to see him react to the palace themes like Whims of Fate, A Woman, Price, and When My Mother Was There.
ooh man i really love how you found that d in all those chords in tokyo daylight, it makes me want to jump into some kind of musical+thematic analysis--there's a line in the piece "life will change" that says "can't hold on or life won't change" and there's a sense of apathy the protagonists are constantly fighting against that permeates the daily lives of the japanese citizens going about their lives...and tokyo daylight plays during the portions of the game when you're out and about in the different cities! so i thought that was really fascinating that you isolated that without even knowing anything about the game's plot...that maybe they're a bit unconsciously "holding on" to that status quo. would definitely love to see you do a part two because the soundtrack is phenomenal and has some incredible stuff in it the further you get into it
This game is one of the few games you can spend over 100 hours on listening to the same few songs on loop and not want to pull your ears from your skull - there's so much satisfaction and variance in the music that you don't get bored or annoyed by it even after listening to it for a long time.
I came here IMMEDIATELY love this man and this game
YEAH WOOHOO Ive been hoping you'd do this vid!!
“This whole time I feel like it stays a little bit sus” Thanks Charles

This is crazy work. One of my favorite games and you broke down this dope soundtrack. Subscribed!
16:30 it's not a complex melody that doesn't disturb the experience. I haven't even heard (up to this video) how many chord changes occur all the time, that's how little disturbing is. It's incredible. You're incredible too.
This was really cool and informative. I've been waiting for so ling for you to do a video on this. Thank you for making this! You're the best!
It finally happened! Woohoo!
This soundtrack has so many great tunes. Given how much he seemed to enjoy it, I'd love to see a Pt 2 looking at some other tracks!
Watching Charles try to decipher the chord progressions is amazing hahaha
If Charles was a Consouls Patreon he would have access to the charts for their Persona covers 😉
Love this reaction video by someone who loves music listening to and breaking down P5. Makes me appreciate it that much more (and it was already my fav Video Game Soundtrack of all time)
