Hello, I was wondering about the courses you are providing. May I ask the requirements? I went to the website but was unable to find them. Can I do the course with a keyboard? To me they’re not the same but well… I don’t have a piano.
Btw being a percussionist that one part you were talking about is not a 5/4 rhythm. I’m pretty sure It’s 5 notes counted like this - a tri-pl-et 1 a tri-pl-et 3 - etc.
I think that's just indicative of how well made the anime is; Everything including the music and visual design just screams what the show is about so that anyone can instantly understand it. You can show someone a random clip of anything from JoJo's and it instantly conveys the feeling of the show.
I always think Araki style of manga is "so much charisma it carry the whole thing". And I mean it in a good way. There are a lot of chaos and freedom in his manga, and a lot of time it doesn't make sense if you think about it. But instead of verify everything with logic and explaination, his character and drawing just pour out so much charisma and energy that you get hook and you don't care.
That's when you know the whole thing is just absolutely great. Music is so incredibly important for video, it's obviously at least half if not more of the entire picture. So having a character's theme that basically embodies them is really why Yugo Kanno is such an incredibly good composer.
One thing I love about Yugo Kanno's score for the Part 3 anime onward is how each Jojo has their own theme that is unique and distinct, and yet they all feel cut from the same cloth. I'm not sure if it's some sort of melodic mode or shared chord structure that does this, but it's so instantly recognizable!
i agree, especially when listening to josuke, giorno, and now jolyne's themes back to back and comparing them to jotaros. there is that shared melodic line that is definitely characteristically different, but sounds ever so similar to each other. and if that isn't the whole point of jojos idk what is, the progression of family through time and fate. kanno is as genius as araki and every single person from the animators to the voice actors all share this deep understanding and love for jojos
Agreed! I hope he does a part 2 to discuss more of the OP's. I think he'd really enjoy Bloody Stream and Uragirimonono Requiem, and there's others I'd be interested to hear thoughts on, like Sono Chi No Kioku.
Can we just talk about how balls to the walls amazing the delivery of the singer is in the OG theme? Can never get enough, amazing pick by whoever hired him.
I studied this music so much in order to write original music for JoJo! There is a thriving community of composers inspired by this franchise and anime music in general. Great to see that JoJo music is getting wider recognition! I hear the Jotaro theme as 4/4: the first line of the riff starts on the 4th beat and lands on the first beat of the next measure going up chromatically from the major 6th to the tonic. Let me know if you hear it differently taking this approach!
Jotaro’s theme does not have a pattern of five as he explains at 9:10. The notes aren’t all the same length, it’s just a syncopated rhythm. When the song starts the pattern begins in the middle of a measure, but if you start at the the downbeat (the F or the fourth note), the rhythm of each measure consists of a quarter note, eighth rest, quarter note, eighth note, then a quarter note. This measure would be constantly repeated. In other words, after the first three notes of the song, if you split the pattern into 8 beats, the notes are on beat 1 / / 4 / 6 7 / (Repeating back from beat 1)
I listened to this section over and over trying to hear what you’re explaining and I THINK I know what you mean. Maybe it’s the mushy playing of the guitar making note transitions unclear to me, but I hear the notes more evenly distributed, lending more to his interpretation
@@antoniofarina716 I agree, and I think that’s part of the point - Kira’s entire motivation is to live a life free of consequence, to remain entirely unnoticed. It stands to reason that his theme would be typical to represent the facade he assumes as an unremarkable salaryman.
great video!! the later Jojo parts have been referencing more and more jazz-related stuff recently (the prison in Stone Ocean called Green Dolphin Street Prison, a character named Jobin, a Stand called Autumn Leaves) it makes me very excited for how jazzy the soundtrack will get in the future
As someone who's just now going through the Jojo series (Currently starting the Diamond is Unbreakable arc), watching Charles BREAKDOWN BREAKDOWN the different scores just made my day.
When Charles struggles figuring out the structure of a song, you know it’s a good song Also I really hope he will make a part 2 cause the music in JoJo really is made in heaven
There are so many genius tracks by Yugo Kanno, the current composer for the anime (and some great ones by his predecessors too admittedly), it's a shame it can't all be fit into one video
This man has taught me more about the art of music through enjoyable content on things that we’d actually care about than the music theory class I took in high school. That’s impressive
I absolute think that you should do a 2nd part of this sometime. The creator of the Manga, Hirohiko Araki is a HUGE Music Nerd, including naming most characters AND their Special Stand ability after Musicians and Albums, and Yugo Kanno, the composer for the series, knew this and delivered in kind to match the kind of wild, zany, barely contained chaos of the source material. His use of Jazz and Classical composing sensibilities and voicing married with Modern Rock and Synth production as well is absolute BRILLIANCE. It's absolutely epic and wild music befitting the amazing on screen adaptation of a manga series nearing it's 40th Birthday. Yes, JoJo has been a driving force in Japanese Pop Culture for almost Forty. Years.

Got a shiver down my spine at 11:59 . It's really funny for that counter part bit, i remember spending hours to try and find it but didn't, the fact that i finally understand what happens makes me like jotaro's theme a million times more, Thanks Charles!
I was hoping you'd talk about Jojo music at some point and I was giddy with excitement when I clicked this. Awesome breakdown; did not disappoint! Jojo has such an interesting variety of music that pulls from multiple genres, but it's all quality. There are so many awesome pieces. I hope you'll come back and cover more Jojo in the future because it's super cool to hear your insights and there's a wealth of music to choose from!
You should check Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star)'s soundtrack. It is phenomenal! Its soundtrack is inspired by 70s and 80s disco/jazz/orchestral rock/big band music in which I believe you are really interested in, since the anime came out in the mid 80s along with an anime movie that came out in 1986. Fun fact, Fist of the North Star is THE anime that inspired many famous Shonen anime to pop up like Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and of course Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (hence the show is nick named the father of Action Shonen).
Another Jojo episode would be awesome if you could Charles! Some other songs I could see you enjoying are the following: Bloody Stream, Awaken (Pillar Men theme), Sono Chino Kioku (End of the World), Diamond is Unbreakable (Josuke’s Theme), Killer (Kira’s Theme), Crazy Noisy Bizarre Town, and finally Great Days. All of these are super solid, but if you can only do 4 of them then I would say do Bloody Stream, Killer (Kira’s theme), Diamond is Unbreakable (Josuke’s Theme), and Sono Chino Kioku. Bloody Stream is another wonderful Jazz opening, Killer is the theme to the main Villain of part 4 and I think it’s just so expertly done, Diamond is Unbreakable is the theme to the protagonist of part 4, it is reminiscent of Giorno’s theme in some of the feel but in my opinion I’ve always preferred Josuke’s theme, and Sono Chino Kioku is the spiritual successor to the first song you listened to “Sono Chino Sadame” so you may get enjoyment out of that too.
It'd be really cool if there were full reactions. I'd honestly watch him talk about these songs for an hour or more as he listens to them in their entirety.
Love this video! The Jojo soundtrack is really great, so it’s great to see someone break it down with such depth and enthusiasm! If you ever choose to make another video on the music from this series, I would definitely watch!!
JoJo is literally just whatever Araki is interested in at the time. Be it music, fashion, travel. Dude writes what he likes wrapped in a cool ass adventure and whiteboard scribbles turned into abilities.
10:59 That was also my reaction every time in part 3. Loved the way they tackled the music in parts 3-5. I'm also starting to get into the vibe of part 6 too.
That part of Giorno's theme still sounds as good as it did when I first heard it... What a perfect harmony and melody pairing, 100% cohesive yet so much dramatic, colorful motion
I'm hoping that The Consouls will do some Jojo covers as they've only done select Lupin, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky and Kids on The Slope (but I think they are focusing on VGM jazz covers as there is so much there already)
8:33 you're trying to do all 4 notes the same length, but it's actually: singular dotted 8th (the melody starts on the "last" note of another set of 4, like a lead-in) then the 4-note pattern, starting on the (one-e-and) AH of beat 1, goes: 8th - 16th - 8th - dotted 8th
Love the video but was interested in your hearing of the the guitar in Stardust Crusaders. The way I hear it is that if the 4th note of the sequence is the end of the scale movement, then it’s on beat 1, with the 1st note on the “a” of beat 1, the 2nd on “e” of beat 2, and the 3rd on the “and” of beat 2. This repeats every 2 beats. In other words, if all notes are held until the next one: a dotted eighth note, a regular eighth note, a sixteenth note, and finally an eighth note.
Seeing your genuine passion and fun you're having with this is such a treat. It just puts me in a good mood as well. Makes me want to practice piano even more. Would love a part two to this with you checking out Bloody Stream. I remember I used to listen to it on repeat for weeks without ever getting tired of it.
Great vid Charles. I've only watched a bit of JoJo and knew they had some nice tunes. Maybe I should give it a go again. Also, if you're looking for more anime music with the big band sound, there are some tracks in the show "Kekkai Sensen" which should have some. The story is set in New York, so the composers definitely put some jazz pieces in there. 👍
JoJo is set in all kinds of places, not only England, but also America, Italy, Egypt and of course Japan. So much Great music in all different kinds of flavors
That has GOT to be my favourite reaction to Stardust Crusaders of all time. The surprise and delight, just *chef kiss* JoJo is full of the same if you're ever tempted to make this a two parter!
I came here for Vento D'Oro, and I was not disappointed. While I was listening, I noticed the same chord progression (or at least part of it) is used in the song Close Enough for Love. The first two bars, specifically, then it goes through the major relatives, do some chromatic ups and downs over there, and then they close the loop so elegantly.
YEEEEEAH, i wasn't expecting that you would appreciate this beautiful soundtrack, keep going on the exceptional analysis of so many good songs in anime!!
I’ve been deeply invested in Yugo Kanno’s music for a few years now. A large section of my channel is dedicated to extensions, suites and mixes for the JoJo series as a whole and it’s always a good time going through seeing what I can make from it. I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of the Stone Ocean OST alas…still no idea when that’ll be out.
11:58 JESUS THAT MADE ME HAPPY 🥹🥹🥹Charles, I know we all say it... but seeing just HOW MUCH you love what you hear brings us so much joy. That part in particular, I was right there with you pulling the stankest of faces😤, and getting caught up in the gorgeousness of that whole progression... It was beautiful and I'm so glad you picked it apart like that! 😍😍😍
I would love a part 2 of this- there's so much amazing music, particularly in the show's openings. Great Days, Fighting Gold, Traitor's Requiem, and the Part 6 opening are my personal favorites.
I would be really interested to see your analyis on more songs through out jojo, there's lots of interesting harmonic content to accompany the themes and characters on screen
I about threw my phone seeing this thumbnail. Touched on the big openings, would of been cool to dive into some SHINING JUSTICE but happy with what was presented. I may not be musically inclined but love watching these.
Can you maybe do a video on Randy Newman (similar to what you did to John Williams)and his work within Pixar films such as Monsters Inc and Toy Story, love his writing so much
Enjoyed this very much! There is still some great pieces from Jojos to uncover. Generally enjoy your Videogame/ Filmmusic breakdowns. Especially for a guy well versed in the arts is would recommend the soundtrack of Risk of Rain 2. Very interesting rhythmic and melodic things happening in there. I personally love the final piece "con lentitud poderosa" that gives you a rather dreadful vibe than a triumphant one as you walk up to the boss. Initially in this action packed game this was a sequence where you just walked and the music was the only content to enjoy. Also, small fun fact, all track names are rain inspired. Anyways, it is highly complex music id love to hear your opinion on! Thank you for making these videos!
first p5 now jojos. im eating good tonight, all id need to complete my personal trifecta is an analysis on the Splatoon ost. honestly just watching someone geek out to something personal to you and enjoy it, even in a different way, is so much fun for me.
I never thought about this until it was broken down but there's something vampiric about the piano solo in giornos theme. Like I can just imagine Dracula walking in while it's playing
I do want to say that on the bass for Giorno, instead of playing an Ab sometimes I play it as an A natural, which causes more of that good jazzy dissonance
If the anime soundtrack videos continue, i think made in abyss would be a great fit. Kevin Penkin’s work is one of a kind here and i think has a lot of interesting details that charles can go into depth with

you're trying to do all 4 notes the same length, but it's actually:
singular dotted 8th (the melody starts on the "last" note of another set of 4, like a lead-in)
then the 4-note pattern, starting on the (one-e-and) AH of beat 1, goes:
8th - 16th - 8th - dotted 8th
My thoughts exactly. I can see where the confusion comes from though. The drums aren't that pronounced to notice that it's still 4/4
Love the breakdown of JoJo soundtracks, there's so much iconic and extremely well produced music that adds so much to the anime.
"breakdown"
is that a jojo reference
Love the video but was interested in your hearing of the the guitar in Stardust Crusaders.
The way I hear it is that if the 4th note of the sequence is the end of the scale movement, then it’s on beat 1, with the 1st note on the “a” of beat 1, the 2nd on “e” of beat 2, and the 3rd on the “and” of beat 2. This repeats every 2 beats.
In other words, if all notes are held until the next one: a dotted eighth note, a regular eighth note, a sixteenth note, and finally an eighth note.
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS CHARLES // LOVE YOUR CONTENT
The way you analyze and deconstruct music is just pure ingenuity. You sir, are amazing.
G Aeolian sounds like a Stand name which is very fitting
PLEASE do more, this is super educational and very entertaining as a jojo fan
That has GOT to be my favourite reaction to Stardust Crusaders of all time. The surprise and delight, just *chef kiss*
JoJo is full of the same if you're ever tempted to make this a two parter!
I would love to see you cover Josuke's theme someday too, was surprised it wasn't in this video
I think that stardust crusaders song is a lot more syncopated than it might appear on first listen 😊
You absolutely have to do a Part 2, the music only gets better from here!
YEEEEEAH, i wasn't expecting that you would appreciate this beautiful soundtrack, keep going on the exceptional analysis of so many good songs in anime!!
This is everything I love…Jazz, anime, educational breakdown!!! Perfect video! Two thumbs up 👍
I’ve been deeply invested in Yugo Kanno’s music for a few years now.
Can we just get a full album of the little improvisations Charles does when explaining? I would listen to it all day xD
I thoroughly enjoy watching you get so excited over those themes, I wish you stuck on the diamond theme for longer, it was so good!!
yes, finally! jojo's music is amazing.
As somebody who wants to go into film and video game scoring your channel is the most helpful tool I have ever seen. Thank you!
Hi Charles!!! I love seeing these analysis videos so much!
I for one would love a part 2 on this video, since theres just so much to talk about when it comes to JoJo
I would be really interested to see your analyis on more songs through out jojo, there's lots of interesting harmonic content to accompany the themes and characters on screen
I really wish you could have done some of the songs from part 2 considering just how iconic some of the music is in that part
I hope he returns and takes a look at Josuke's and Kira's theme. Feel like he'd like them :)
I about threw my phone seeing this thumbnail. Touched on the big openings, would of been cool to dive into some SHINING JUSTICE but happy with what was presented. I may not be musically inclined but love watching these.
Can you maybe do a video on Randy Newman (similar to what you did to John Williams)and his work within Pixar films such as Monsters Inc and Toy Story, love his writing so much
Finally, I have waited four - no - FIVE thousand years for this!
I want to understand, but at the same time I'm just sitting here vibing and thinking 'I like your silly words, music man.'
I hope you do more JOJO breakdowns! Part 4 crazy noisy bizarre town is a great op as well!
looking at people having so much fun and excitement hearing music that you love is something i love so much about these videos
Clicked on this immediately. Been waiting for this vid for a long time.
Amazing BREAKDOWN. I barely know anything about the music but I like how quickly you picked on the notes.
If only this could've been like half an hour so he could play most of the song (especially the most known parts of the first 2)
first p5 now jojos. im eating good tonight, all id need to complete my personal trifecta is an analysis on the Splatoon ost. honestly just watching someone geek out to something personal to you and enjoy it, even in a different way, is so much fun for me.
Genuinely did not expect you to START with Sono Chi No Sadame
Stardust crusaiders just .... Omg brilliant
Can we get a part 2 with the Part 2 and 4 OPs and Roundabout thrown in?
I never studied music beyond middle school to I don't understand any of this but I'm enjoying it because of your delivery.
I think anime is where all the best composers in the world go to explore what is possible without limitations. The mixing of genres is just the best.
As far as beautiful piano based soundtracks, A Silent Voice is a must. A lot of absolutely stunning ambient piano pieces.
Binging JoJo right now. This couldn't have come at a better time.
That was just AWESOME. I just really need to see a part 2 of this with BLOODY STREAM!
My fave part of the Giorno theme drop is the "duhduhduhduhduhduhduh" that pops up for like a measure. Gets the blood pumping
I like the saxophone breakdown
@@atalantafugiens0426 that sax makes me swirm because its such a great sound, and it's an even better solo.
Not having Bloody Stream in this is a bloody crime
I honestly don’t even watch a lot of anime but the soundtrack to JOJOs definitely caught my attention since the first episode
i recommend koichi's theme - "courage". it does some really amazing things as well
I never thought about this until it was broken down but there's something vampiric about the piano solo in giornos theme. Like I can just imagine Dracula walking in while it's playing
I do want to say that on the bass for Giorno, instead of playing an Ab sometimes I play it as an A natural, which causes more of that good jazzy dissonance
Really dig the pure enthusiasm. This is the best energy for this sort of analysis, because personally speaking, it really is that exciting.
If the anime soundtrack videos continue, i think made in abyss would be a great fit. Kevin Penkin’s work is one of a kind here and i think has a lot of interesting details that charles can go into depth with
I've been waiting for this video! Hope you do a Part 2 some time.
We need a part 2!
we definitely need a part 2 of this and on that note check out part 2’s opening - bloody stream
