Yoko Kanno is an AMAZING composer and arranger! 👀👌
When I played this song in big bands I had no clue what it was even from.
I think it's time to check out Cowboy Bebop very soon

⏩Video Question: Who are your favorite composers in anime?
I want to learn much more about Yoko Kanno for sure! Here is some basic information:
Yoko Kanno (菅野 よう子 Kanno Yōko?), born March 19, 1964 in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, is a composer, arranger and musician who scored for the Cowboy Bebop anime series, movie, video games, and the live-action remake. She is also the keyboardist and frontwoman for the band The Seatbelts.
Omg the madman he did it!
Yoko Kanno is definitely an industry legend.
I Like Yuki Kajiura with her opera like themes. Especially in Madoka Magica:
1. Sis Puella Magica
2. Absolute Configuration
are 2 of my favorite tracks.
And then in Fate / Stay series:
1. The Sword Of Promised Victory
2. They Rule The Battlefield
Yasuharu Takanashi's work is amazing, in classics like Fairy Tail and Naruto,
And particularly love Toshio Masuda's beautiful and otherworldly compositions in Mushi Shi though.(which is an amazing episodic anime that i highly recommend, very digestible since every episode has its on ending)
Also the entire soundtrack of "Nagi no Asukara" by various composers.
my favs would be Tsuneo Imahori , he composed the OST for boxing show called Hajime no Ippo 2002, it has very rocky, grungy and loud sound to it that works with the grit of boxing .
Kensuke Ushio ,he did SIlent voice OST , its a lot more ambience focused and understated than most anime soundtracks
Naturally Hiroyuki Sawano who did Attack on Titan music for first 3 seasons
Honestly theres just too many
One of my fav is Kenichiro Suehiro - he composed several arrangements for Re:Zero which are incredible. Shiro Hamaguchi - he did One Piece (absolute legend of an anime) and some Final Fantasy games. And of course Yoshihisa Hirano - he composed some of my absolute favorite pieces in Hunter x Hunter, Death Note and ton of others.
i love all the names in the coments, but i could says my fav actually are sawano hiroyuki and kevin penkin
Requiem of Silence (from Re:Zero anime) composer Kenichiro Suehiro
The entire Cowboy Bebop sound track is a complete groove. And the anime is top notch! Top 3 for me!
And 2 years ago, the Seatbelts did a virtual session of this. Absolutely worth checking out! The shadow dancing woman is actually Yoko Kanno! And something interesting to note about Tank!, the Sax Solo is NEVER performed exactly the same.
ruclips.net/video/2VsgkIE-RHg/видео.html
Yeah definitely in my top 3 too bro
How did you get through it? I gave up halfway through because the episodes were too contained.
@@lucriciousthetrainer4365 Cowboy bebop really isn’t about the big story arc or plot. It’s a study in characterization and mood. But if that doesn’t appeal to you then it’s probably just not your thing.
This and samurai Champloo is just💥
I had no idea Tank was such an iconic song outside the anime community but it makes sense even my grandparents enjoyed this song when i played it for them.
Based grandparents
That's fantastic to hear
My parents came to my big band concert and even though they always talk shit about anime this song was their favorite among the 18 we played. We played John Was don’s arrangement though
I was not expecting to hear this song when I went to a drum corps competition last week. My daughter was wearing her cowboy bebop shirt and she lost her mind. It was her first in person drum corps experience and it brought her to tears. She's now determined to march with SCV. Which corps were you in?
I'm glad someone has commented about the DCI part. Sheeeesh! I marched with the Seattle Cascades! Good times. Can't wait to see BD in a few weeks
Same when i first heard the preseason performance and they played tank, i lost my mind lol
@@DrumRollTonyReacts I was a trumpet player in my local highschool band and grew up watching the battle of the bands held in Charlotte. Carolina Crown is the DCI group I follow but having graduated 2011 no one in my class didn't know who the blue devils were. I will definitely be sharing that clip with my friends^^
@@chemislife I CANT WAIT To hear Crown.
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Guts Theme Please 🙂
This theme is unavoidable since it's one of the legendary ones,
What an iconic opening song. And, if you really haven't watched the show so far, I highly recommend doing so. I think it's a masterpiece and one of my favorite animes of all time. Dark, mature, but very funy. Great story and characters and one of the best soundtracks to any show ever.
under rated comment and very humble praise.
I loved the show. The soundtrack is great. I never skipped through the opening.
@@jwag301 thank you eric 😊
Completely agree great show top 5 for me but also funny has 2 n’s
The ost was ahead of its time. Yoko kanno is a legend.
The irony since this is a 60's jazz throwback.
@@cteal2018 true for “Tank”. But the show’s styles and influences are much deeper and more diverse than just that. The Cowboy Bebop OST runs the gamut between countless genres of music
I definitely recommend reacting to Guts theme
Up
Up
Guts theme from the 90s anime Berserk, it's a masterpiece and the manga's so good that there hasn't been a single decent anime adaptation since the 90s release.
Ufff what a recommendation!
Damn
My high school jazz band senior year played this or was going to play this in festival, I even had the sax solo 💀 unfortunately this took place in 2020 and we were all quarantined, years later I’m now a 3rd yr in college and every time I glance at my sax in my room I’m just reminded of what could have been 🥲
lol I'm sorry!
I love the fact that you can just feel the trumpets peeling the paint of the damn ceiling, with that high, piercing, silver notes they're hitting...
I'm a simple man: I see "TANK", I click.
Former marching snare player through high school and a private corps after, very happy to see you give us some BD. I know I'm a year late, but now I get to go look up their performance!
Thanks for this!
I LIKE Yoko Kanno.
I especially like the music of the anime GHOST IN THE SHELL(攻殻機動隊).
"Inner Universe"
"Rise"
"player"
These songs are sung in English and Russian.
Ghost in the shell : Stand alone Complex has such a great and diverse soudtrack
All the openings are indeed in Russian/English (sung by the late Origa), but there is also great song in Italian/English sung by Ilarya Graziano (I do, I can't be cool, Velveteen...) and some... oddyties sung by the legendary Gabriella Robin (Kanno's alter ego) sung in "Kanno", words from different languages or made up that are put together to form a melodic gibberish (Tachikoma out for a Walk, Torukia, Cyberbird...)
Ariel Glory!
COWBOY BEBOP (I understood the title is a reference to a 1950’s term for competitive horn playing) is my favorite anime series. It’s definitely worth watching. This recording (CD version) of Tank is different from the version in the anime opening, which is shorter and from a different take.
The ending song, “The Real Folk Blues” is an awesome ballad. You should check that one out next.
Shout out to the SANTA CLARA VANGUARD. Anyone interested in learning more about the intense world of drum corps might enjoy the movie “DRUM LINE,” which is set in a fictional HBC.
The Anime Gives Back version of Real Folk Blues from FUNimation back when COVID-19 first hit is *chef's kiss* as well.
If you're talking about the title COWBOY BEBOP, their ship is the Bebop, and Cowboys are what they refer to bounty hunters as. The title references the ship which references the music style.
"competitive horn playing" what😆. Bebop is a style of jazz characterized by fast tempo and super crazy chord progressions, no competitions going on there haha
I will never get tired of the smile on musicians faces when this song is playing , especially that ending climax 🤣🤣
If you're not aware of them, you absolutely need to check out the Tachibana Highschool band. They're of of the best marching bands in Japan. Though I won't be surprised if you already know them.
I do know them BUT I had not thought about reactions to them. Good idea
@@DrumRollTonyReacts I thought you might. I remember stumbling onto them and immediately realizing that what I was watching was some seriously top level shit.
Fun fact: it is physically impossible to listen to this song without pumping up the volume
Yoko Kano is amazing. This version of Tank will always be my favorite, but she also remixed it for the Netflix live action show as well.
Worth listening too if you haven’t before.
It has some subtle changes but it’s still very much Tank!
I just love Yoko Kanno so much. If possible, listen to her album Songs to fly, which contains selected songs from soundtracks of different media, it's just too beautiful.
You should listen to "The Real Folk Blues" by the Seatbelts, it's from Cowboy Bebop as an ending song and it's one of my favorite songs ever.
1:55 As a bassist in big bands and combos, I have to agree with you 100% xDD
Yoko Kanno also did music for the Macross series of mech anime. Macross, while being a mech show, features female characters who sing pop music as a very prominent element.
She actually used a pen name for.. I believe the lyrics for a lot of the Macross songs.
She's done a lot more, some much more out there compared to Macross, but in my mind, there's something about being able to create both good pop music and all the rest of the stuff she's done that showcases just how great a songwriter she is.
I'll also add, for my generation at least (1987 model, myself) Blues Brothers did so much to introduce folks into Jazz, Blues and Rhythm & Blues etc.
OMG the memories. I'm a clarinet and oboeist. Give me a great brass and saxophone solo - pkaylist ALL DAY!!Best anime video next to the OST from Death Note. Thanks 😊
Sweet. Glad to hear there are more musicians in the comments!
You should definitely react to more Yoko Kanno, and also more of Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack in general.
I have a feeling you'd really like Rush especially
Such an great show, this opening plays before you know whether the episode is gonna be goofy, sad, scary, cheerful, or all of them. Every episode is very distinct.
Speaking of, maybe react to the ending theme
"You have your brass, melting your face off..." This defines big band for me, thank you.
Just watched Blue Devils play this at finals!!! 🔥
oh man you gotta watch cowboy bebop, its such a classic and has such a good aesthetic, my only complaint is that it's too short 😭😭
My favourite list (it's really treasure for me):
1. Shiro Sagisu - The final decision we all must take
2. Shiro Sagisu - My brother
3. Shiro Sagisu - In my spirit
4. Shiro Sagisu - Treachery
5. Yoko Kanno - Moon
6. Yoko Kanno - Torukia
7. Susumu Hirasawa - Gats
8. Maaya Sakamoto - Kiseki no Umi
9. Yuki Kajiura - Canta per me
It's not from anime, from game, but you should listen😍
10. Chris Christodoulou - Coalescence
11. Hades - Through Asphodel
Also you can listen
12. Hiroyuki Sawano feat Gemie - Light and Shadow
Hello from Russia😘
I’m from Columbus Indiana and I was in the Columbus north marching band and I love watching dci. Not a lot of people realize how much effort you have to put into it but the end result is always worth it. I wish I got the chance to play this song
what instrument do you play?
@@DrumRollTonyReacts I play the trumpet I usually play the lower parts of a piece
This comment is 5 months late but I just wanted to say I love when other tunes I know make it into field shows. I remember going to a DCI event a few years ago and picked out music from Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them in one of the shows(and I'm upset I can't remember which group performed it). Awesome video!
Edit: it was the 2018 Blue Devils show it seems lol
Got to play this song for my last jazz band concert senior year of high school along with Pat Metheny's "The First Circle". Both songs contained some of the highest notes I ever had to play as 2nd trumpet.
Also I wasn't aware you had a Drum Corps background. The high school I went to had the only competitive high school drum corps in the states until 2012 when they decided to become a marching band (unfortunately this was my senior year). Never got to march DCI but I did a summer of DCA back in 2009 with a corps called the Sun Devils. To this day marching is still one of the most rewarding experiences I ever went through.
I love Pat Metheny!
I would love to recommend another masterpiece from Hiroyuki Sawano, the OSTS from the movie "Bubble". It has a variety of songs composed by Hiroyuki, most of them are only instrumental but every single one has a special and unique melody. I assure you, you're gonna get goosebumps. It's probably my favorite work from him so far.
By the way, I love your channel and reactions :)
If you like this, 100% check out "What Planet is This?" Its my favorite song in all of Cowboy Bebop and its incredible.
Such an underrated track since it’s from the movie. That entire dog fight scene is fucking epic!!!
I imagine anyone who does a lot of jazz or big band work probably gets more requests for Tank! than almost any other song.
Recently subbed to your channel and I'm loving your musician perspective so far. I suggest giving Baccano! a try. Its OP and OST 1 is similar to Tank if not more. Have a great day!
The last 15 seconds of this song is my all time favourite outro ever.
On the full CD collection there's an extra track with Ed singing the lyrics to Tank!
Man I loved your reaction, I want to hear you talk about music, especially the band sub genres man I was so interested
Yoko and The Seatbelts are a very tight band !
Originally I only heard the "Cut" version of Tank that was Q'd for the sixty second (60s) Anime Cowboy BeBop Opening. It was on youtube years later I heard the full version of Tank. I think it is interesting to see how the final televised edit paired down the original to just it's base elements to fit the air time/ length restriction. Next Up: TriGun
One of my favorites! Thanks, Tony.
heck yea. id love to see you go over some lot videos or classic shows from dci history
I'll be taking a ton of lot vids at finals. Never know about other youtubers lots vids if they would get mad for using their video or not.
MAN Tank is a banger. Somehow I forget and am surprised every single time. There's really not anything like it in anime - save for the opening to Baccano! If you want more big band grooves
Man and I said this in a previous comment but it's so good that every time you pause to comment, you give your thoughts and roll it back a fair amount - it's such a small thing but if there's ever a case where you pause at a really choice moment, it's not ruined. That moment isn't lost on you or anything. So many other reactors just kinda stop and go and miss a lot that way. Keep up the great work man
With this intro you're missing out on seeing the visuals in the anime opening. It introduces the characters as the song progresses and the characters have their own theme to how/when the music comes in.
And I'm also missing visual copyright ©️ so that a good thing.
@@DrumRollTonyReactslol I think you’d be alright brutha , there’s a RUclipsr that has a literal 30 minute breakdown of the opening and it’s visuals and how the visuals and music mix together to subtlety give context to each of the characters. It’s actually an amazing vid you should check out sometime just look up “what’s in an OP cowboy bebop” by “mothersbasement” . He’s a great content creator
If you check out The Real Folk Blues (both Japanese and English versions are great) be sure to also check out the Special Performance collab they released to youtube in 2020 as well. ruclips.net/video/8GwE0wwMmKE/видео.html
Also there are a number of great songs off the OST, Gotta knock a little harder being one of my favorites.
What Planet Is This?! is definitivelly my favorite song from the movie
I haven't checked to see if you've reviewed more of Yoko Kanno's work, but I have to recommend you check out her compositions/tracks for, "Macross Plus". Some personal standouts are, "Idol Talk," and, "After, in the Dark," which also features Mai Yamane ("Tasogare") on vocals.
AOT x DBD out today. Let's go.
Also thanks for reviewing tank
Masato Honda is the lead alto sax soloist. He's also known for his work with T-Square. Isn't he amazing?
would love to see you react to some "Initial D" tracks like "Deja Vu" "Running In The 90's" and "GAS GAS GAS"
"Stardust crusaders" another JoJo theme, think you would enjoy it!
The first time I heard "Too Good Too Bad" from "Cowboy Bebop" I immediately thought "Cool marching band tune!".
While it is a very different style from most of the anime theme music you've been listening to, I think you might enjoy "Sono Koe ga Chizu ni Naru" - the opening theme for season 2 of "Snow White with the Red Hair". The anime is a romantic adventure, and the theme reflects that romanticism, but there are some very interesting complexities that are used so well that the casual listener would probably never notice them - but musicians (particularly the drummers, percussionists, and bassists among us) catch them with a smile 🙂
as a lover of cowboy bebop ( it is the first anime I ever watched) I would love to know what you think of the song "digging my potato" I honestly think it's one of the best songs in the series.
Amazing song
Here I was, having so much fun with the AOT video, about to recommend you to listen to The Seatbelts or Yoko Kanno in general (I recommend, insist, the things she did for the Escaflowne series), and was surprised to see this one! Because dude...this whole show and the music...almost no words for it.
I'm definetly having the best time of my life here with you, even if you don't know about anime or a specific show I can see your passion for music, so thank you, keep it up!
I forgot to tell you about an important topic about Yoko Kanno 😅
When the current Emperor ascended to the throne in 2019, she was asked by the Imperial Household Agency to compose a congratulatory song, and when she performed it in front of the Emperor and Empress, the Empress was so moved that she shed tears when she heard it 😌
She is also from Miyagi Prefecture, which was the most affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, and she composed the charity song "Flowers Bloom" to support the reconstruction efforts. A special version was released in which famous Japanese talents, actors, and musicians sang the song, and it is still sung by choirs all over Japan.😢
this theme is immaculate ah!!
PLEASE please do more Yoko Kanno. PLEASE
Blues-inspired Jazz Funk
My fav intro to any anime. Just amazing.
More more more Seatbelts (Cowboy bebop ost)
Now I want to know what u think about Trigun opening
I have one an anime with a whole bunch of great songs you could check out. Its called Angel Beats!
My Soul, Your Beats is the opening, Brave Song is the ending song, My Most Precious Treasure is one of the most impactful songs in the show, and all of the songs by the in show band, Girls Dead Monster, are spectacular. Especially My Song, Crow Song, and Alchemy in particular. I hope to see you check those out.
As a jazz saxophonist, this fucking song gets me GOING
OF COURSE TANK IS HERE!! 🤣👌
you should react to all the jojo openings! there are a few jazzy songs in there ;)
I am looking forward hearing more
amazing song, shows lots of the stretngths (the flexibility) of Jazz. (in my eyes, not professionally speaking, Jazz / Blues / Funk sorta has that ability to fuse with things in things like R&B (Blues Brothers sorta taking slow paced stuff like Soul Man and Riot and make it more exciting witht the electric guitar/bass etc), afro Blues and so on. It's so fun. I once had a visit-thing with a symphony and I remember sitting in the back for a practice for over an hour and doing nothing. All effort was on the violins (understandably) but then my role was just as a silly background thing nobody would notice missing (really). Like a segment in a part of a thing in the middle part of a 30 minute thing. Symphony totally lost me at that (luckily) and I've had so much more fun with jazz / r&b etc.
I recommend checking out Lost In Paradise, it’s an ending to an anime called Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s super Jazzy.
I lost my shit when I saw DCI in Atlanta a month ago and BD pulled Tank out. It was so gooooood
Tenor-Sax here. The Sax section parts just sound so fun to play. Just the type of things I know I'd get elated while playing with everyone in BigBand.
You should check out Paprika movie OST. They are super unique and fun
Would really recommend read or die (ova) and/or r.o.d. (ost).
I watched my first read or die b/c the synopsis was so stupid and weird. It is actually pretty good though.
Credens justitiam or Venari strigas, from Madoka Magica's OST, by Yuki Kaijura
Love this show, love the music! Love the breakdown. Really appreciate you bringing the music knowledge for us folks with musical backgrounds, while still keeping it entertaining.
Btw, Polyphia just dropped a new single (Neurotica) you should check it out - the drum work is wicked, and I’d be interested in your take!
Guts theme please 🙏😁
Once upon a time when the earth was just beginning to cool I played trumpet in a marching band. It was the junior band, and we had one number. 25 or 6 to 4.
I rescued myself by trying out for and getting a seat in the stage band where we always played inside. Always warm. Always dry.
I do love the big bands of the ‘30s and ‘40s.
Still, if it’s got a brass section I will listen to it.
Now, I’m going to listen to Tank again.
I wish he listens to higher quality version like flac which has 700+kbps bitrate compared to youtube's 128kbps, it really does make a difference, you can hear whole lots of details
Guts theme,especially recommend
DNA - The Seatbelts (From Cowboy Bebop Movie)
Listen to Space Lion...same album.
Yoko Kanno, Joe Hisaishi, Kenji Kawai and Hyde (from l'Arc~en~Ciel band) are the anime composers I prefer.
Good choice with Cowboy Bebop. :) You can also check "wolf's rain", "vision of Escaflowne", "Macross"...
The songs from Kokia and Gakt are also very good.
I forgot the "Akira" OST by Geinoh Yamashirogumi...
Space lion
You should react the Jojo’s bizarre adventure openings like you did with the attack on titan openings
YES PLEASE
Reminds me a bit of the theme song to Johnny Quest at times. Edit: Fun Fact - Johnny Quest was one of if not the first soundtracks to use synthesized music.
This is "The Opening" in the anime :).
Jojo's OPs? They blow everyone away every time
Anything from the Vision of Escaflowne sountdrack
Any Lupin the 3° fans here?
We need to make this man listen to The Full Theme of Lupin of the Lupin part 4°
Is something like Cowboy Bebop opening but I Hope You never heard It before.
Se me ocurrieron algunos...
Vaundy - Hadaka no Yusha (anime: Ousama Ranking)
Sambomaster - Seishun Kyousoukyoku (Anime: Naruto)
Omoinotake - moratorium (anime Movie: saezuru tori wa habatakanai)
Bôa - Duvet (anime: Serial Experiments Lain)
L'Arc-en-Ciel - The fourth avenue Cafe (anime: Rurouni Kenshin)
Ging Nang Boyz - Shounen Shoujo (anime: Sunny boy)
Makoto Kawamoto - 1/2 (anime: Rurouni Kenshin)
you need to react to guts theme!
Man you really need to react to Persona5 OST. Trust me on this one
I recommended some Mushishi soundtracks
+1 Such a great score for a great anime
I recommend listening to the OP’s from Tokyo Ghoul. You would enjoy those.
pleas react to Made in Abyss OST - Hanezeve Caradhina (Kevin Penkin )
This is what I came to recommend. In fact the whole of the Made in Abyss score, plus contributions by Myth & Roid. One of the absolute best.
i don't know if you had tryed it ( i don't think so) but you could try Umineko no naku koro ni opening song it's called "katayoku no tori" ( one winged bird) and is a song of the very talented artist "akiko shikata" it's in short a "modern opera" type song!
I subbed cause you started talkin Tumbao I wanna hear more
You should react to Houseki no Kuni's Kyoumen no Nami. It's a really complex song
Also the 5 openings to Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Every opening is basically the theme of the place the mc is in instead of the op to the show if that makes sense
Please watch the show sir, its an absolute classic, one of the greatest of all time
Great reaction Christian Bale!
I don't remember for sure, but i think that last 2 bars of trumpet play double Eb's. Those hurt when i was in high school 😂
Edit: my guy on Blue Devils playing that double G in a field show, props. Miles harder than playing in a concert setting
