How I’m doing color studies in 2024 | Mixed Media Art Tutorial
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 авг 2024
- This week, I am sharing the new way that I will be doing color studies in 2024 for my mixed media art.
During this session, I’ll only be using 6 colors and some grids to make both a bright, and neutral palette to work from.
These colors were pushed past their boundaries and revealed absolutely gorgeous blends, mixes and contrast.
Plus - it was a fun and refreshing way to accomplish a studio task.

Every creative person has different needs. Here are the different ways to enjoy these videos.
- Some enjoy hearing me explain my process. If that’s you, make sure your volume is on.
- Others prefer to read my process through the closed caption subtitles. If that’s you, turn on the CC at the bottom right of the video.
- Some don’t want to hear my voice at all (that’s ok 😀). If that’s you, turn the volume off and watch.
I have had every video electronically translated through close captioned subtitles into 12 different languages to be able to reach and connect with as many people as possible. If your language is not represented, please let me know.

Aside from all the color mixing tips and tricks - Jackie, I just have to thank you for sharing your joy. As much as I appreciate all the knowledge you're providing, the greatest take-away, for me, is the way you express your delight. It reaches into my heart. ✨️
Thank you, Cam for watching and for sharing this with me - it means so much to me 🥰
I love how excited you get when you love a pull. I need to stop watching these at night; I just want to go play. Tomorrow...I can wait until tomorrow.
LOL - I might be better over coffee 😂 Thank you so much for powering through so many of the videos - you're a champ! 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio I only found you recently. I'm enjoying your videos.
I have never mixed paint before. I have downloaded the grid and it was so easy. I have so many supplies that need to be played with YOU are an inspiration. Thank you😅
Magic words - "I have so many supplies that need to be played with!" Best thing I've read today 😉 🥰
The joy and happines on your face says it all. Love these grids thanks for the great demo and lots of tips.❤❤❤
Awwwww - thank you Andrea 🥰
I love this approach and those colors are so pretty. Will you be showing more color studies like this?
I sure will, Minty Mintington! Your's is one of my favorite YT handles 😍
❤ Thanks for telling us to get good paint coverage on our tape! I’ve done loads of things with my tapes, as surprise byproducts, but it never occurred to me to be deliberate about it! 🤪 And so can’t wait to do this type of color study!!!
You're welcome, Deb! Have fun with the color study. 🥰
Thank you for the grid, much appreciated 🥰🥰💐💐💐💐 UK
You're very welcome! 🥰
Thanks for a great video.
Yes! Your color study choice was so inspiring. Felt like the exact video I needed to further my exploration. The Light Phthalo Blue seems to have so much clarity about it. Such a departure from the first video of yours I fell in love with- Metallics in Mixed Media Art | Dark & Stormy. Thank you for the videos and I hope you have a beautiful weekend.
Sherry! Thank you so much for being here and taking the time to let me know that you enjoyed the color study. I bet a bracelet made of the colors would be just gorgeous! 🥰
Jackie, thanks for this color study! I love the colors and it is so exciting to see the combinations that are being made through your work. Lovely!
Thank you, Catherine - these colors have me revved up for sure. I can't wait to start a larger piece with them. Thank you so much for always being so supportive. 🥰
Thank you for the printable ! Your new color studies will gently move me to a new carefree approach that is not my norm. I follow recipes and quilt directions, so this can stretch me beyond and be good for me to watch, follow and try.
You're welcome Susan! I love that you're willing to try something that might stretch you creatively...you may love it, or hate it, but for sure you'll learn something new. Have fun with it. 🥰
I saw you fall in love with those colours on your live stream and I had a feeling they would be making an appearance again. Such a joy to watch you have so much fun creating. Your free way of playing with these colours to see what they can bring - makes me so happy and inspired.
Some of those pulls were exquisite. Those template pieces are so simple and yet effective pieces of art and be put in a frame after.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much, Happy! These colors have me so revved up - I'm not sure how I'm ever going to use others...but this is how I am...I'm a serial color lover 🤣😂🤣 Thank you for coming back 🥰
You have me sooooo excited to do this color study! And more of them ❤❤❤ thank you so much for sharing your process and tips - so grateful
Thank you, Kelly! I'm so happy this color study worked for you 🥰
Hi Jackie 😍It really was pure pleasure to watch you doing colourstudies in this special way. One of my favorite colours is apricot - which also happened to be one of the results. And I would never have expected it, when I saw the colours you chose for today. I´ll definitely give swatching in grids a try, when I let my inner child play next time 😁 And I am looking forward to see your wonderful smile, when you do your next experimental session. So have gorgeous times in your studio - perhaps using an easel for bigger formats, or whatever you choose. Here comes a big hug from Britta 🥰
Really nice to see you, Britta! I love the color apricot too and was so surprised that we got there with these colors. Great idea about the easel - I've given it a lot of thought, but I'm still trying to see if someone can figure out a wall system that's sturdier. What I'm really trying to do is get everything off the floor in the studio. Between the work table, camera and lighting equipment and supplies - the floor of my studio has become somewhat dangerous. Hopefully I'll have it all figured out soon. Now go and let your inner child play with some paint! 🥰
Excellent video. Love your process and ideas. Such joy and freedom, as well as learning doing this process. Thank you for the great videos and abundant joy. ❤
Jackie - thank you so much for your very kind words! I adore your Glitter Grandma handle - - my grandson calls me "Gammy" - it makes my heart melt every time 🥰
Getting summer sunset vibes from this colour study adventure of yours, Jackie! So lovely 😍! Since I don`t like winter, it's like therapy for me watching you play with all these nice colours you've picked.
Aloha from Berlin ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I am so happy the colors are connecting with your Aloha spirit, Queen! 🥰
These gel plate pulls make me think of Persian carpets that I love!
Awesome, Joy! 🥰
Hi Jackie. I love what you did in this video. I, too, save my tapes. I put them on old cereal box bags, which are PERFECT for this purpose! It's inexpensive and works like a charm!
Thanks for your generous content.
Fantastic tip, Carol! If it's ok with you, I'd like to share it. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and comment here.
Great video What a excellent way to learn color and develop color for larger works. Like the prints made from the mixing pallet. Been doing something similar with printers ink, sometimes taking 2 or 3 impressions. Will try your way with paint, more color choices.
Thank you, Dave! I haven't played with printer's inks but have always wanted to try - do you have a recommended brand that you use? I love the idea of getting 2-3 impressions!
so awesome ty
Cool! Thanks!
You're welcome! 🥰
Those gel pulls had me almost as happy as you! I SO get it when you're not quite sure what you'll get. When it comes together like that it is such a joyous experience, isn't it? I adore to gel print. It's one of my favourite things to do. I love the zen of it. When I am troubled, I get out my plates and just play. It always settles my brain and heart. I enjoyed this colour study! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. So awesome to see how you do this! Love and Bless xo
Thank you, Lindsey - I feel exactly the same way. The gel plate is a stress reducer (Doctor's should prescribe it!). 🥰
My physician of 30 years is also an artist. So, in a way he HAS prescribed art for me! I am dealing with the loss of my husband of 30 years. It was just the 2 of us, plus loads of animals. Such a big loud life we had! Art is healing me slowly. It is so enormously important to me. Thank you for showing us how beautiful it can really be. Bless xo@@PaintedPaperStudio
@@lindseywarren44 Lindsey, I am so so sorry for your loss. I'm glad that the art is helping you to heal and maybe even revive old memories that have been in hiding. Wishing you peace. 🥰
How kind! Thank you, darling. I wish you peace also! Bless@@PaintedPaperStudio
That’s a palette that makes my heart sing too😁❤
Hi Cindy - it's so much fun, right?! So happy to see you here again 🥰
I am so happy to have stumbled upon your channel! I absolutely love the color palette you created. They are my happy colors as they remind me of a sunset. Just purchased the new Pthalo blue and violet. Diarylide Yellow is my only go to yellow! Thank you for imparting your wisdom.😊
I have to admit, Bee - these colors together have been my favorite color combo this year. Why didn't I know how wonderful Diarylide Yellow is before now?! 🥰
Love these colors, thanks fir sharing your grid experience. Can’t wait to see what you create with them. Will you collage a large pieces with them? That would be really cool.
Hi Ivy - I think I will do a large piece with them, but I'm going to sit with them for a couple of weeks first. I need to let the colors and possibilities marinate in my brain first 😂. Thanks so much for being here and taking the time to reach out. 🥰
So much fun watching your videos. You totally go for it and get so much done! Thank you!
Dede - thank you. I have so much fun when I'm "working" it's really hard to stop myself. Thank you for being here. 🥰
I love the black markings, and am going to embrace that simplicity today. Still want to use purple, but I WILL try my best at simple and soft. Love everything you create - everything!🩷
If some purple finds its way in celebrate it 😜. I'm so happy you're here and thank you for your kind words. 🥰
Wow, that was an exciting session, LOVE the gel prints and the neutral grid! Super fun!💕🇨🇦
Hi Cindy - great to see you again! I was just so surprised by the neutral palette. Thanks for taking the time to tell me what you thought 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio my pleasure!😄
Your exuberance is contagious!
And I hope you caught it, Jo! Seriously though, I get so excited when creating - it's like it tickles a part of my brain that creates joy. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to reach out. 🥰
So cool❤ love it!
Thank you very much, Ana Paula! 🥰
Love these colours and the combinations they produce. Thank you for the grid template - will put it to good use.
Fantastic Julie - I hope the template serves you well. 🥰
OMG!!! I LOVE this and am so inspired to do some color studies now! Thanks Jackie :)
Heather - this makes me SO happy to hear! GO and have some fun 🥰
i feel the same way about these wonderful colors! I can't wait to try all these techniques myself. Thanks so much for sharing this.
You're welcome, Karen - I hope you jump right on it 🥰
Awesome papers! Tks for the template!!!
You're welcome, Nathalie. I can't wait to see what you do with it 🥰
Absolutely was mesmerizing and so encouraging watching this 🥰
Thank you, Brittany! 🥰
Wow, you’ve gone from the UK spring, to a Mexican summer, in one session!
Great way to put it, Annie! And that is a trip that would be fun to make 😍

Thank you for today. You always do a great job😊
Thank you, Lynn - that means so much to me 🥰
Awesome 😊 love, love, love this class. Thank you for the template 💕
You're welcome and thank you for always having such kind words, Fran! 🥰
Hi, snce I discovered your wonderful channel, I can’t wait to see your videos. Thank you. I’m going to do a color study with colors that I hardly ever use to see where that takes me. I tend to gravitate toward blues and gold usually .
I love it! Take action explore new things, but also take your blues and golds as far as they can go. Thank you for your kind words, and for being here. 🥰
❤ I enjoyed this video today and I learned so many new techniques . Thank you.
Thank you for being here, Clarise. 🥰
Love this exercise, I'm learning a lot!
Thank you, Fernanda. It get's so interesting when you start playing with colors. 🥰
had a blast figuring neocolor 2s & komorebi watercolors for grids. made a couple of neo 2 'watercolor' palettes (Sophie mcpike inspo) plus using them & 1s for layers...gotta get the gel plate out but this is sooooo fun!! Apple barrel acrylics is next...ty!!
Fantastic, Judy! I bet the watercolor grids are amazing - I need to dig out my neocolors and start using them again. Thanks for inspiring me 🥰
Fantastic! I enjoyed this so much! Inspiring!
Wonderful Gina - thank you for watching!
What a wonderful video. I have been saving it and today was the perfect day for so much color. I'm a bit under the weather and this slow time has allowed me to relax and enjoy your presentation. I probably have some of these paint colors already and when there is a good sale from one of my suppliers i will order the others. In the mean time i will select six colors to explore using the grid. Thank you the magic 🎨!
Oh Susan, I'm sorry you're not feeling well, but I've got just the thing to cheer you up 😍 I just posted a new video a couple of minutes ago 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Thank you for the note. I will check out the new video this evening. How nice to have something to look forward to. I haven't made collage papers for ages and am excited to get to work. I'm feeling better already. Thank you. 🎉
Loving your awesome face when you love your papers!!
I printed out from your email. Will be venturing down in the studio in the am. 😊
Thank you so much, Candace - clearly I have no poker face - I can't seem to contain my surprise/wonder when a paper comes out so unexpectedly. Have a wonderful day in the studio. 🥰
I fully understand your happiness 💜
Thank you, Sonja. 🥰
I can’t stop thinking about the Golden Light Phthalo Blue….I think I need to buy it 😂😂😂
Right?! It's just such a good color - PS - it's making a small-but-mighty appearance in the next video coming out 😍
✨💖✨
Thanks, Alice!
Such a fun video, Jackie! Fabulous colors ~ and so surprising!! I loved the green hue you created, a brighter, warmer celadon, a cross between celadon and chartreuse maybe? I like to do larger grids on full or half sheets of paper, and I found using a Mighty Board to cut the template works great, as it's indestructible. Have you ever used Mighty Board? xoxoxox. for another great video!! Deanna
Yes, Deanna - that green is a cross of celadon and chartreuse - shall we call it "celatreuse?" 😍 I have not used mighty board, but this is the second time I've heard about it this week. I guess that's the universe telling me it's time to get some. Thank you for always being so awesome 🥰
I love "celatreuse"!! ANd I'm going to try to mix that color myself, I'm sure I have all of the colors you used in your video! I forgot to tell you, I really think you should do a large scale painting or two using this color palette, as I looked at some pf the papers your created in the video, I thought to myself "That would be a gorgeous large paitning!" If only we had the time to create of the things we envision in our minds!!@@PaintedPaperStudio
Hi Jackie I love your work. So inspiring. Is that pin board a magnetic board
Thank you very much Rich & Lisa! The pin board is made of regular cork, painted white - however, a magnetic board is a genius idea! Thank you for being here 🥰
These are gorgeous! Do you let the paint dry before you do the pull? It looks like the paint is dry on the paper when you are finished with the pull. I’m learning a lot from your videos and thank you for sharing!! I’m new to this.
Hi Jean! Usually I do not let the paint dry before I pull (I'm too impatient 😂). However, if I have many many dry layers built up, and I want to pull them all, I'll let the paint dry for a day before I pull. On the prints that I pull quickly, they appear dry because they (mostly) are. When you use a brayer to move the paint around you can usually get it very thin and it dries super fast on the paper. If your paint application on the plate is thick, it will pull up wet, and likely will not produce a result you love. It takes practice to get the feel for it, but it's really fun practice 😍 I'm so happy you're here and that you took the time to ask. 🥰
Thank you for the inspiration for how to start my day in the studio. I felt so blocked yesterday that I baked bread instead! 😅
And now you've inspired me to bake bread (I can smell it already!) I'm so happy the video helped to motivate you back into the studio, Lisa 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio happy baking! 🖤
Licen green 😊
YESSSSSSSS! That's it exactly, Tera! Thank you 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio 🥰 I love your videos, very inspirational. I’m a mixed media artist and I love love making painty papers and collage papers. I especially loved this video. Thank you so much for sharing your gift.
@@myartsymindteracolleen5649 Awwww, thank you - I keep trying to tell anyone who will listen just how fun painting papers can be. I'm glad you agree! 🥰
Love your way of creating and expressing your work. I was curious as to how long and the width of the table you work on?
Hi Kate - thank you for your very kind words. My table is a beast 😂 she's 36" x 72". 🥰
Hi Jackie, you have me hooked on gelli printing. You mentioned in this video that you made another one only for gelli printing. Where can I find this? Thank you! You make beautiful art. ❤
Hi Kim! Thank you for your kind words, and I'm thrilled that you're getting hooked on gel printing. This is a link to the free video guide I created for gel printing. It's basic but has some really helpful tips and ideas. I hope you enjoy it. 🥰 painted-paper-studio.ck.page/gel-print-guide
I loved the colors. I would like to purchase several. Would it matter if they were Golden fluid or heavy. I do more Gelli prints.
Hi Julie, great question! Either would work - I'm partial to the fluid acrylics, but it might depend more on your environment. If you live and create in an area that's very dry, you might want to go with fluid acrylics - they just stay wet a little bit longer. Having said that, for the past several weeks I've been using the heavy body acrylics on my gel plates and been incredibly happy with the results. Regardless of which type you buy, I think you are going to be enthralled using these colors! 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio In researching not all of the colors come in the fluid acrylics.
Please…how does your “artist tape” come off the paper? Brand name if you like it? Thx!
Hi Joy! It is "artist's tape" which means it's low-tack. Usually I can just pull it back without ripping the paper. Sometimes (if it gets stuck or starts to rip) I put a little heat on it with a blow dryer, and it comes right off. Here's a link to the brand I use amzn.to/46udvgw
The top left square on the brights grid when you showed it at the end made me make a little longing noise! It’s just so…..Mmmmmmmm!!
How do you choose which colours to use, please? They work so well together, but I can’t see the relationship between them!
I know that noise, Kate - for me it's a combination of "Mmmmmmmmm" and "Ohhhhhhh" 😍 You are absolutely right, there is no clear relationship between the colors, but the week before I had a paper painting session that included these colors and more, and I discovered that they surprised me. The paper painting session inspired me to explore what these colors could do together, and that's how I picked the colors for the study this time. Other times I just pick colors randomly. I think that you can't go wrong with the colors you pick so long as you approach it from a place of "what if." I hope that helps. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio thankyou :)
I store my homemade washi tape on sheets of baking paper. I can then store the sheets rolled up on an empty paper towel roll.
Thant's a great idea! 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio You've shared so many wonderful tips and idea in your videos that I'm happy to share a few of my own ☺
I also use baking paper when I'm doing collage work. It's great when you want to out pieces that have just been glued. Place a piece of baking paper over the piece, rub with your fingers and peel back gently.
It also makes a cool collage paper :)
Please send me the grid for the color studies, thank you
Hi Nancy - here is the link to the grid. 🥰 painted-paper-studio.ck.page/grid-template
I’ve always heard Phthalo pronounced like thalo, I was confused by the way you said it. Don’t know which way is “right”, if you do please enlighten me.
Yes, it is pronounced, "thaylo." I had a wonderful viewer point it out and correct me, so now we both know 😀
Phthalo is pronounced tha lo.
Thank you, Jo! I hate it when I pronounce things incorrectly, and I'm not going to lie - I've butchered Phthalo too many times. I appreciate you helping me out. 🥰
