    Great work and thank you! Just found/watched your video more or less by accident. Creating a instant replay system with Hyperdecks used to be my goal. But since they just aren't getting cheaper, the used ones as well, it's a intensive invest. With an older 4K Hyperdeck Studio (SSDs), a Hyperdeck Studio Mini (SD cards), both capable of recording 1080p60, an Elgato Stream deck and Bitfocus companion, it is possible to remote control the Hyperdecks. For example, pressing one button on the Elgato Stream Deck starts recording on both Hyperdecks and another button stops recording. Since each button of a Elgato Stream Deck can be programmed to chain multiple orders with Bitfocus Companion, a third button might stop all recordings, jump to the very end of the newest recording of one Hyperdeck, rewind the last 5, 7, 10 seconds, start playing back the recording with 40% of the normal speed => meaning even slow motion playback is very possible and switching the ATEM Mini to the input the HyperDeck is connected to. Works just fine. Although, this particular setup has a downside, the Hyperdeck Studio Mini needs a little more than 1 second to switch from recording to playing back the video. Fortunately a delay can be chained to the list of orders. The 4K Hyperdeck Studio switches from recording to playback without any noticeable lag. Probably because of the SSDs. This setup was used for live streaming softball games and instant replay of pitches and plays on first base or home. @Alex, what I'd really be interested in, do you have a possiblity to test if what I just described has any lag on the HyperDeck Shuttle HD? Maybe the if lag exists, is can be reduced when recording to an external SSD?

    Hi Alex. I purchased the HyperDeck Shuttle after watching your video. You say in this video to export it out as a "Progress file" 6:34 to get edited video to play. What does that mean? I cannot get edited videos to even be recognized by the Hyperdeck shuttle. In addition what Black Magic Design does not tell you is you MUST purchase specific equipment, from an approved list of equipment that is buried in their website somewhere. You'll need specific approved high speed expensive Disk and a Samsung TR7 or other approved media from their hidden list in order for it to work. Plus you need an additional monitor to incorporate it into your workflow even if you have the Black Magic 7" monitor already. So buyer BEWARE. You will need to buy hundreds of dollars of equipment just to get it to do Live record and playback... and they will tell you that the product is unstable and may or may not work at all for playing edited video. So Alex, can explain what a Progress file is and what settings are needed to get the HyperDeck Shuttle to simply play back an edited video during a Live webinar. Thanks! KEV

    In one of your last videos, you showed how to save the last 30/60 seconds or so of a broadcast to a file. I've been trying to figure out a way to have 'instant replay' during a live stream. Would a combination of that video plus this hardware be a viable solution? The saved clip could always overwrite the previous one - no need to save those highlight reels. Any thoughts?

    Hi there! Great video, it gives me hope. I explain: i livestream webinars every week over zoom with an ATEM Mini Pro ISO paired with wirecast on my Mac to have more video files going etc. when needed, then I have to also record the livestream (which I do from Zoom internal recording, at a very low quality unfortunately), but the atem mini pro does have only one usb-c port and I must use it to connect it to the Mac, instead of an ssd where I could record. So I was searching for an easy and functional way to livestream and record at the same time and I came across your video. So is that possible using the shuttle alongside the atem mini pro? Thanks again for this video, have a good one 💪🏻💪🏻

    • @ivanright3467
      @ivanright3467 10 месяцев назад

      I’m also trying to eliminate wirecast from the workflow, which I use just to play secondary clips during the livestream (often it happens that I have to upload the clips from the ssd to wirecast on the fly during the live) and it seems easier with the shuttle over Ethernet. Did I got it right? 🤔

  • @AskJoe
    @AskJoe 6 месяцев назад

    I'm re-watching this for the 4th time to remind myself some of the great points you made. I realized the hard way that relying on the Extreme ISO alone to record is a bad idea. I was recording something important yesterday and decided I wanted to use the ISO mode to give me the ability to edit it later. When I hit the stop button, it was basically frozen and needed to be powered down and I only captured the 1st 5 minutes, so I not only didn't get all the ISO files, but I didn't even get a copy of the Program. If I took your advice, I would've captured an independent Program on the Shuttle HD.
    Lesson learned. Always have a backup. What drives me crazy is I've discovered this is a common problem on the Extreme ISO. Some people blame the speed of the SSD, or the high quality settings, but there's no definitive answer as to the reason, so I'd love to see you address which drives and settings are the most reliable for recording. Meanwhile I've got a NAS with a 10gb network and I forgot your advice to use it as a network recorder. I didn't even think to connect it to my Atomos Ninja V. I think I'll chain the 2nd HDMI to the Atomos, then the output from that to the input on the Shuttle... then record to all 3.

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Joe, I’ve had this happen to me a few times too. I’ve done extensive testing on trying to find a cause / pattern as to when it occurs. The closest thing I’ve come to right now is it seems to happen more when you’re recording at higher frame rates 50 or 60fps as opposed to 25/30. May I ask when frame rate you were recording at when this happened to you?

    • @AskJoe
      @AskJoe 6 месяцев назад

      @@AlexPettitt Getting to the bottom of this and preventing another problem has opened up a can of worms and underscores some of the quirks in the Blackmagic ecosystem. My ATEM and my Shuttle are set to 24 fps.
      The Shuttle is using ProRes HQ because it was the only combination I was able to successfully place media such as my show opening that actually showed up. Meanwhile, I shuffled my wires to push the second HDMI with the program into the Shuttle, setup some guest shares on the Synology NAS, assigned them and gave it a go.
      It started recording to the SD card instead of the NAS, then made the original show clips invisible because as you know you can't mix video and audio formats on the same card (they should find a way to do this with folders at least). It's not as useful if I can't use it to play clips, but I decided to try again without the card just for curiosity sake in case I get a second Shuttle just to record. Il it does is turn red for a blink and create files with zero bytes. I've confirmed the Guest account has access to the folder and I can see it's able to access it because the (empty) files are created.
      For now, I'll record my backups on the Atomos, but it would be great if the Shuttle could not only record to the network, but play clips.

    This is my next purchase! Alex got a question and might be a good video topic. Your ATEM videos have been great, but I'm stuck on a scenario. Assume we have a live audience, but there are 2 people who couldn't travel so they will be remote. At the conference presenters in person use PowerPoint, but there is also a Teams or Zoom meeting going on at the same time. If I wanted to get a picture in picture of the remote people what is the best way to achieve this scenario? Right now I'm testing using 3 notebooks attached to the ATEM extreme. HDMI 1 - Live Presenter notebook in person, HDMI 2 using Teams PIN full screen one of the remote presenters, and HDMI 3 in Teams PIN the other remote presenter. Is this the most efficient way to handle multiple remote presenters in either Zoom or Teams software?

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  10 месяцев назад +1

      There are multiple ways your can tackle this scenario, but short answer is yes you’re doing it the right way “Zoom / Laptop Farm” way which many use and works well in most instances. And for teams, I’m probably what I would recommend. If you switched to Zoom, there is a great bit of Software called ZoomISO that can give you individual SDI feeds for each guest. But there is added expense in that. Hope this helps

    So growing file is working on mp4 format too or just pro res ? Does it works only with Nas recording or even if you record through the SSD? I mean does the hyperdeck shows the SSD as a shared mounting point too ? This is a really great feature I must say! My only complain is the following : can the hyperdeck record multichannel audio into the file ? I might need to send the output of a tricaster with 4 audio tracks, do you think that windows show the HDMI audio interface out to the hyperdeck as a multichannel audio ingestion source ? The idea is to settle one of the teicaster multiviews, using the HDMI screen as embedding audio video source back on the hyperdeck, I'm concern that the hyperdeck won't have multichannel audio ingestion through HDMI than. Great video Alex 👍

    • @AlexPettitt

      Yep the growing file works as H.264 as well as ProRes. And no, the Hyperdeck won’t show an SSD as a shared mounting point.

    Hello Alex, I’ve been waiting for someone to do a good video on the HyperDeck Shuttle HD. I have several use-cases in mind for this, but one is to feature as an Instant Replay situation. But before I jump into buying one, i wanted to run my theory past you and see what you think or what suggestions may be. I know you did a video on using Vmix for instant replay a while back. I am really trying to limit the amount computer-based requirements my system has.
    I want to get a 8x8 HDMI matrix switch, so that most of my cameras can be looped in and routed to the Inputs on the ATEM Extreme ISO i have. But then I can route any specific camera into my HyperDeck Shuttle HD. - I’d like to know if I can get a companion/ stream deck to start and stop clip recording, and set up additional buttons to command playback of the most previous clip, or even several clips back in real time, or a preset “¼” speed option. - I wonder if the Playback / record setting block this from being possible? I’m hoping I can just have a page or two of a stream deck
    Bare in mind I have very minimal experience with a stream deck. I am hoping to have a few buttons like: 1. will just replay the most previous clip in real time, 2. Replay the most previous clip in ¼ time. 3 & 4. A clip up and down button for buttons 5 & 6 that would replay “
    Selected clip” (3 & 4) and play in real time (5) or (6) at ¼ speed.
    And if this is even doable, I’d probably expand more buttons to this to also playback in ⅛ speed.
    My plan is to have an operator for replay at least starting / stop the clips and log them. My TD would have a companion to actually do the recall and switching of replay, I’d have my “playback” buttons (hopefully) set up to play for 15 frames then switch into my program input.
    But I definitely would appreciate your thoughts and advice on this.

      Personally I wouldn't look to use any Hyperdeck model as a replay unit as they all lack the ability to be able to record and playout at the same time, so you risk missing recording some action if you're busy playing out another clip. But that being said, from what I can see, companion & ATEM Macro's could most likely be combined to achieve the scenarios you've described :) I haven't tried it myself, but I see no reason why it wouldn't :)

      thanks @@AlexPettitt I do see your point, maybe I'll consider two Hyper Deck Shuttle HDs for a replay system. that way I could also have potentially two angles of the same replay on bigger plays, but also wont miss key plays on my backup.
      I've freelanced in Football and Basket ball for many years as a camera operator. It hasn't been very often where we use a replay that overlaps even the start of the next play for our commentators to pick up quickly as the game continues, especially on plays that really warrant a replay of the play, the teams and fans are usually celebrating longer than normal.
      Alternatively, what options do you propose for a replay system that could work with a ATEM / companion control model that could fit in a minimalist mobile production model?

    See what you mean by them hiding the network recording feature. It's not in the manual. Does Blackmagic have any documentation on this feature? We're interested in using this but we have a large network with our nas on different subnet so I bet it's not going to find nas when it does a scan. Can you manually add the IP info of storage location?

    Does growing files works with ProRes files too? Also can you record ProRes 422 HQ to a network? What happens if your NAS is slower for record? Can SD card used for buffering?

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  10 месяцев назад +1

      I have tested growing files with both H.264 and ProRes with both working fine for me. But no, there is no caching built in, so you need to make sure your network has no bottlenecks and plenty of headroom, otherwise I’d imagine you’ll get dropped frames

    Alex, what do you mean exactly by a guest a ccount on your NAS that the hyperdeck will find? Is it a guest account with no password with write rights to a specific folder? Do all recordigs go into that folder only?

    • @AlexPettitt
      @AlexPettitt  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yes exactly, similar to like how I showed on my Mac example, I was able to do the same on my QNAP NAS too, by enabled the Guest account and giving a specific folder I choose on the NAS full read and write access with that guest account :) Hope this helps

    Great video Alex but can you seriously not dial in the teleprompter scroll speed??? Read speed is critical and establishing and sticking to a specific speed is so important. Continually trying to re-establish scroll speed through the jog wheel would be very poor. Also I assume that the teleprompter script can be edited on the fly??

      It’s a good point! I’m so used to just manually scrolling myself through a script I han’t really though about being able to dial in a speed control. It’s a great suggestion!

    Wow this terrible prompter functionality is insane I've been searching for good teleprompter software for years and they're all bad how do you change the color of the text? I personally prefer cyan text on the black background on an OLED screen I find that gives me the best contrast and readability from across the room. Is that possible or is it only read that you can do ?

    Shut up and take my money!!!! Recording to the network is actually brilliant for rehearsing, as there is no plugging in and out to review your clip. Currently performing some music, and watch back is essential for practice.
