That is really amazing that they squeezed the original hyperdeck into this. So useful. I don’t know if i will but it since i don’t have a use for it. But still very cool device
Missing a dual output for key/fill function.
I don’t see how this would benefit my setup. But I don’t use instant playback so maybe that’s why? Stream deck for playing videos since I have the computer on the desk anyway with atem control, it’s hooked up to 3x bmpcc 6k. iPad/iPhone with cheap app for teleprompter. Atem records nice project file with iso. So just switch to raw from cameras in post. Am I missing anything big here? Because I’m confused over the excitement.
I find the prompter-feature a crazy cool add-on feature!
I've already ordered it. It's bloody perfect for my setup. Specially since the HyperDeck Studio HD Mini been acting a bit weird with playing back videos. It will replace most of the VLC stuff that I have included in my setup making things a lot easier to use and more reliable. The Teleprompter is a huge bonus for my corporate jobs. So much cooler than the OBS trick. Since OBS is a bit unreliable from time to time and not as nice to use for people who have never used a teleprompter before.
As a recorder, I don't think it's a special device.
What I'm missing is a Live Slow Motion option. It would be great if you could easily create clips and then start right away and control the tempo with the knob.

It was a great share! I have a few friends who are content creators and they organize live sessions. I am sure this will be a great watch for them, and it will help them a lot. I think it is a great gasket, and I will be sharing it with my friends. I agree with the price disappointment. $495 sounds like a lot when compared to the HyperDeck Studio HD Mini at $495 (which I bought to use with my ATEM already). The only pain with the Mini is the limited formats for playback from the card. It sounds like the shuttle might be more versatile. At $295 I might have splashed out and bought it, but it's not sufficiently different to the Mini to justify another $495.
Anyone with an old laptop can use it for video playback or as a teleprompter. At this price point I’m not yet tempted to fork out for this device however good it looks
If the Shuttle can do slow motion, it would be perfect for a live broadcast, especially for a church or sports

This is intriguing. I just got into the ATEM mini pool by incorporating it into my team’s training webinars. I could definitely see the teleprompter and video playback being of value to our live webinar training sessions at times. Video playback
More than teleprompter as our trainers typically know their material quite thoroughly. I’m not sure if it is the best addition to our mini extreme ISO set up for the price tag. I look forward to your full review.

This would be great to use for my church especially with the opening video and closing credits that are used each week. They take up a lot of space in the presentation software causing some issues depending on how many other videos and large images are in the presentation.
Alex, it’s all on you. I’m not buying till I see your complete review on this unit. I agree, being able to record then play it right back thru the ATEM mini would be awesome. But other wise, I see allot of potential for this in the work I do for a University.

something I thought clip was is something that records the footage for the last minute for example and you can replay the footage live maybe for sports events.
Would love to see a video on to best file encoding settings to use and how to integrate the clips or videos into the stream
Hi Alex, I have got this device and have issues with playing H264 mp4 clips that have been recorded an another device. The footage that was recorded on the hyperdeck shuttle itself works well and the filenames have a certain syntax according to the setup. If you have purchased the shuttle I am curious to your experience.

Can it also be used to control fade between two sources or is it only a video input?
What I really miss is a fader device that can fade between two sources on the Atem Mini Pro. Do you have any suggestions?
Just thinking about what might make this more valuable. Firstly at this price a built-in screen which previews menus but doesn't output them, so can use whilst live. But the ability to do quick edits in the moment. So make a quick 10s compilation of the previous live footage as a filler between set changes (e.g. during a live music event, between band performances). I think a lot of your viewers are thinking the same as I about this product; it's kind of missing the mark and a price that is prohibitive to just buy one to see if it's useful
Alex - can you advise, please…how do we match the file format to the Shuttle playback format? I can’t get it to play either H264 or ProRes clips. Can you give us a way to properly export/save a video file and the corresponding setting menu selection? Thank you.

Can you do things like replays and stuff on the atem mini? We are getting into live broadcasting races at our local track and it would be fantastic to be able to quickly have replay of events on track.

It’s an interesting product but I think they’ve missed what a lot of us would really want it for, instant replay!
If you could capture and quickly too and tail videos into clips and queue them up with a slow motion playback option it think it would be a killer prospect.
It seems like it has the potential to be used this way but it’s not been realised into the marketing. It can record and you can queue up clips but you’d really want to quickly prep the clips by marking in and out points and also have a slow motion playback for things like sports events.
I’m sure you can roll the jog wheel to emulate slow motion so it begs the question why it’s not marketed to be a solution to this issue.
I can already do very cheap playback and hyperdrck emulation and control from a raspberry pi running playoutbee so this needs to do a lot more to amaze me.
I'd have loved it to do some sort of live replay thing with the dial. I am not really interested in the other stuff as I have the ISO mini and can plug in a laptop to play things. I think I'd prefer a dedicated teleprompter but maybe this is really cool for some people. It's exciting they are doing more stuff.
You're definitely not alone in wishing it had some live replay capabilities. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this maybe come as a new product line for BM in the future or maybe even a software upgrade to enable some of this functionality. Thanks for the comment Samuel
What if you need your talent in the studio to hear the audio from the videos that are being played back from the hyperdeck through the Atem? How do you do that? Would have loved to have an audio out from the hyperdeck to pull through a sound board. Last time we split the hdmi cable and extracted the audio out from that. Real work around. Let me know if you have any better tips.
This device look almost like the Video Mouse from GSE in 1994-1995. It was able to work VITC video time codes and create inventory list with the WinEdit Tool for windows only. But this was still the old time SVHS & VHS VCR with RS232. I think later there was a Video Capture card from MIRO that worked with Adobe Premier together with the GSE Video Mouse
Oh yes great video.I am having a problem connecting the Hyperdeck Shuttle to my Atem Extreme. It says "Failed Connection" The Atem IP is DHCR and the IP for the Hyperdeck is Static. Would that make a difference or it is something else. Please Help !
Do you know if there is a way of instant playback seen mostly in sport. Record a camera and when something interesting happens, stop recording, instantly scroll back and play it back again.

Hi Alex. Still experimenting with the Hyperdeck Shuttle HD. Was wondering if it could be used as an interface/controller for the Hyperdeck Studio HD Mini. It's buttons are easier to see/use than the ones on the front of the Studio HD Mini. Is there a way to get them to work together?
this device is quite exciting and as you say, Atem and this kind of devices from the entry level start to be more attractive than Atem from levels above... My Television Studio HD lacks so much things compared to an Extreme... Hope NAB will change this !
2 HDMI output for alpha channel graphics will be a sure win and justify the cost :)
With playback, maybe I'm missing something, I just use a laptop or ipad as an input to play videos via powerpoint? Can this do it better?

Do we yet know if this can be controlled from a StreamDeck and/or Companion and if so whether you can switch instantly between video playback (say for an intro) to teleprompter mode (for the host) then back and forth for further playback and narration?
Hi Bill, I will be testing companion support fully once my unit arrives, but I am confident to say that it will be controllable by Companion. It may just need a little time for them to add support for it in the software :)
Not sure how long it takes to switch between Teleprompter and video playback mode, but this is something I will for sure test once my unit has arrived! Thanks for your comment
I could actually find more uses for this thing than I could an ATEM Mini. I still haven't figured out why someone would get an ATEM Mini Extreme instead of an ATEM TV Studio HD, and now that device is outdated.
Will it be possible to use Macros in combination with the ATEM Mini? Maybe to trigger special video playbacks or recordings?

Can you play a video via HDMI out while it's still busy recording from the HDMI in?
For some reason I can't find the Hyperdeck Shuttle HD release Video from BMD on their page? I have questions and hope they'd cover them before I just start asking them.
My first thought for an application is using it for Sports replay. I'd like to take a 'hero' camera and go HDMI IN to the Shuttle then out to an HDMI IN on the Atem Mini Extreme. Start-n-stop recording on the Shuttle on plays, and then use it and the same input on slow motion replays. I'm curious how the passthrough works. or if the INs / OUTs don't work like that.
I'm excited for the possibilities this has and look forward to more info.

Will be interesting to try one in action. It’s a great idea to pack into a small package.
On the playback side, not sure how comfortable it would be without seeing a VT list in front of you (not sure if that shows up in software, not looked at official BM channels yet) and knowing you’re on the correct VT, plus not having VT timings showing.
On the Teleprompt side, a nice addition, would like to see a line marker or bar on the output for it. The main downside with it though is not being able to edit the active script without going to a separate editor on a laptop and then reload it to the Shuttle. Would be a real pain on first read throughs for sure.
Hey Matt, so yes to confirm in the ATEM Software you can still see your playlist (as long as your connected to the same network as your ATEM). VT timings are also show in the software control :)
Good idea for the line / bar on the Teleprompt! I agree about not being able to edit the active script... a part of me wonders if you might be able to do it by editing the text file via the FTP. I will test this and report back :)

Hello, a few months ago I bought this hyperdeck, it works perfectly if I connect it with the atem mini pro or Extreme that I have. But when connected to the hdmi output of an iMac computer to record the Program signal, the hyperdeck behaves strangely, an intermittence in the signal is maintained, that is, if it has video, it goes black like the blink of an eye. Apart from looking like this, it also records like this. I have connected it to an hdmi distributor that is connected to the computer does not solve the problem. I thought that an update of the unit would solve the problem for me, but it did not. It only works well if an Atem Mini is connected in its way... I would like to be able to record from the hdmi output of the computer because that's where the signal produced comes out.
Something that also happens is that you cannot put any HDMI cable to input video to the hyperdeck because it does not receive the signal, there are some HDMI cables that do work with this unit.
If anyone knows this problem and has been able to solve it, I appreciate the help.
I expect the price to drop after the initial rush and some start to show up on eBay. I’m tempted but I can wait.
If this also worked as a Resolve Speed Editor subset that would be compelling.

Hey Morgan, that's been the No1 question so far! My initial answer is that I don't think this would be the best device out there for it.... but I will be testing this workflow as soon as I get one for my review video. Will have more info in that :) Hope this helps!

Cool device! But I really wished that I could playback h264 video's that I export from for example premiere, but it looks like that's not possible right, or am I overseeing something?
It's something that I need to test to confirm, but I do believe it might now be possible (or at least will be soon). Will confirm in my review video for sure :)
We are still awaiting a long overdue (promised) firmware update for this. DJP reported that H.264 in most cases does not work and that he had more luck with ProRes
This would be awesome for sports for replay.
...except that it won't be able to play and record at the same time... so you'd have to stop recording to start replay, and miss anything happening while replay is running. It's a lot more steps than a proper replay system.
I am interested in this device but the price is a little more than I would expect. In Australia it’s about A$750. But I’ll wait until your full review to make a decision, BMD do tend to pack in a lot into their devices and not advertise all the features which makes them more bang for bucks than initial thought.

Hey Sebastian, I don't believe the jog wheel has a clutch but I will confirm that in my full review video once I have it in my hands. As for using it to control DaVinci Resolve, no that doesn't look possible. Still need a Speed Editor for that ;) Hope this helps
Would I be right in saying ,it's lacking an HDMI loop out ... if you wanted to use this device to ISO record say a camera { use it as a reply device } and you still want that camera { that's being ISOed } to appear on your mixer too you cant as this device doesn't have a loop through which means you need a router ... IMO bit of a major oversight on BMD's part not having the input to the device being looped out again .
I find this fastinating. When you get the device Alex, do you mind testing to see if recording while playback a file simulantiously (similar to an EVS device)? I assume the answer will be no, but it doesnt hurt to try and see. Very surprised it is a teleprompter. Would use that in a heartbeat in a few setups.
Absolutely this is something I will test :) I'm almost 99.9% sure it wont be possible to do both at the same time, but will give it a go ;)

With the Hyperdeck Shuttle HD you can’t, as there is only one HDMI output. For that, you’d need the Hyperdeck Studio Mini Plus and above. hope this helps :)

Yes the Hyperdeck Shuttle HD can be fully controlled over the ethernet via ATEM Software Control. I believe that includes both selective playback and loop, but will test this to be sure when I get a unit.
DNX and ProRes will playout fine, H.264 files that were recorded by a Hyperdeck should also play out fine. What I want to test myself is if generic H.264 exports from say DaVinci will also playout. We we're promised this from BM a while back... so I'm hopeful!
@@AlexPettitt also want to see if it plays out externally encoded H264 videos. eg. already delivered videos without having to re encode them to ProRes before use. Currently it's a pain with my Hyperdeck Mini HD 😂

U would like to see a feature like an instant reply with also the playback speed for sports streaming.
The image flip feature is nice, but probably not as useful as one might think... usually the prompter operator has their own display, separate from the one used by talent. Only the display for the talent needs to be flipped. So you can't use the flip feature if your operator wants their own display.
Good point Doug! I guess most people will likely use the feature without the flip in the Hyperdeck, and do it in monitor anyway. I like it as a first iteration of the product...and can already see a number of ways it can be developed further in the future :) Some of which I'm sure we'll see at NAB next week! Have fun there :)
Any thoughts on using this as a replay option for sports? Is it robust enough for that?
I don't this it would be too useful as a replay option as it isn't able to record at the same time as playing back... But I'm sure if you were quick and careful about when you switched modes, you might be able to make something work. Especially with the help of Macros / Companion :) Something to explore for sure... but it wouldn't be my first choice for sports replays personally :)

Does it accept a mixture of different playback formats at the same time? Like mp4 and mov with different codecs?
This is definitely something I will be testing as soon as I get my hands on a unit, as I know in the past you couldn't mix and match different formats on a card. But I think with this model you may be able to :) Will report back!
@@AlexPettitt That is exactly the point. When you do streaming events for clients, you often get last minute files in a complete different format.... So this unit could be the game changer we have been waiting for, if it accepts different codecs at the same time....
@@AlexPettitt I have one of the units and I can't get audio to play from an mp4 that I grabbed from my iMac, moved over on a SanDisk 64Gb card. No sound!
From experience: no. All clips must be encoded exactly the same, to include frame rate.
I'd planned on using one for use in replaying clips as part of online training presentations, but now I have to go back through all my existing material and transcode the clips before they'll work as I'd intended.
Would love to see it pair with an stream deck to use with DaVinci and make it act as a instant replay device... BM if you are listening sports broadcasters need instant replay... it's part of broadcast u guys don't know that... lol Great all the time Alex....

clearly, the instant replay function is one of the most important for a sports stream and there is no way to do that with an ATEM mini or any BMD accessory.
@@zenissart i think with this device its a start a slow start, why BM hasn't figured this gem out i dont know, it seems at least with two of them can daisy chain "of course 2 right" them and create a macro to stop and pause the recording go back 10 seconds then replay the clip ----- while the other one is still recording - or maybe a cache just for replay --- BM if you are listening - I mean you guys show sports in your advertisement, race cars horses swimming basketball - we need to stop cheer leading for this company and have them to stoop beating around the bush just remaking in the same product over and over again....
Has it been confirmed that the device will playback video files not necessarily recorded on the device? Meaning, can we load in video files given to us by clients, creatives, etc?
Not confirmed yet. But definitely the first thing I will be checking when I get my hands on one :)

I was excited to see it but think it’s a bit much when it comes to pricing. If I worked more in broadcast then maybe it would look more appealing. I do have an atem mini extreme iso so spending another £500 is a bit hmmm I think if you don’t have the iso versions then yeah it will be great but is kind of a kick in the teeth to me.
Can this replace a Stream Deck for intro, outtro, and countdown
The two devices do rather different things, so I would say it can be complimented by a StreamDeck rather than replaced by one, if that makes sense :)

May sound stupid but it would be nice if you could use it also to remote control classic Hyperdecks. Or, instead if they would bring a remote only device like this at a much lower price point

Yes is can LOOP as single clip to give you an animated background
Can it replay the current recording, like instant replay? Or is it limited to playback or recording?
It can not reply while recording at the same time, so you wouldn’t be able to use it as a “replay machine”. It is playback OR recording :) Hope this helps :)

Alex - HELP! I have the tried-and-true Roland VR-4HD video switcher. I never EVER found an HDMI source that wouldn't work with it...until I bought the Hyperdeck Shuttle HD.
I either get no picture or a solid color screen, or on Input 4, total jittery unusable video. I have tried adjusting input settings to no avail. What is up with this thing? I have been searching everywhere to find out why it won't work with the Roland. Have you tested the Hyperdeck Shuttle HD with other switchers, including Roland? Are you finding the same issue?
(BACKGROUND: I use the Roland VR-4HD video switcher for livestreaming from my home studio because it has an actual integrated audio board - so much better than ATEM - and I use an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO on the road at workshops and conference presentations).
Hey Kerry, this is super strange to hear. I've yet to come across anyone else report that issue. One thing I would try is taking the Hyperdeck output directly to a monitor to see what happens. If it's fine on the the monitor, it's likely a compatibility issue with the Roland (which I would be very surprised at). Hope this helps
@@AlexPettitt Yes - I tried that already and it works fine on any monitor. It's been hard trying to find out what the issue is with the Roland. I have reached out to their tech support.
@@KerryShearer try one more thing… put an HDMI splitter between the Hyperdeck and the Roland. I bet that fixes it 😉
Would be nice to achive alpha channel output capability using the HDMI input.
Dual HDMI ouputs could be something interesting to explore in the future. I think for now, they're expecting you to key against green if you want to use this for pre-rendered graphics playout :) I like your idea though!!

yeah, I'm actually using an Hyperdeck Studio mini to output lower thirds in 4444, using the HDMI out for the fill and one SDI out (with converter) for the key. I don't think we could to that in that device with green chroma key, you can't do clean graphics with playing on their opacity
I was expecting the classical BMD incredible price of $295 USD by the end of the video, but was disappointed to find the actual price. Obviously they don't want to eat sales from the higher end products but... comparing the pricing of this device vs the hyperdeck minis, or comparing the pricing vs an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO, I can't really see extraordinary price/value. I mean, it's like half the price of a full ATEM Mini Extreme with 1/8 of the hardware.
I think you may a good point about them maybe having to put the price slightly higher to not eat too much into their existing Hyperdeck sales... but also a part of me still feels that although it's at the top end re price, it is still a very compact and portable device that is packed full of features. I'm interested to see how the initial sales will go for sure :)

It is a lot for video playback, I would continue to use my computer. I don't see why you'd want a teleprompter function which would presumably interrupt any recording features. You can buy cheaper teleprompters too. Just setting up a screen for this doesn't mean it would be that effective either without all the other teleprompter associated pieces that let you look "through" the screen. I like a jog control, but there are other less expensive things to buy to do that too.
Did anyone else notice the black magic presenter had an active trigger point in his left shoulder? It was so active, that it might come across as a nervous tick. Which by the way is what a nervous tick actually is 😂
Would love to see an inexpensive “instant replay” device. For sports…..you need something easy to use because it needs to be triggered by the announcer. And then replayed all in 10 seconds or less

As far as I know, it can't. This wasn't mentioned by in the announcement as a feature... but I will be sure to test it to make sure :)

Actually the teleprompter feature can be better: if you flip the text for the talent use, you cannot leave it unflipped for the teleprompter operator, so you still have to find a monitor that can flip the image, so…. Still, is a good addition, but it can be better
Before seeing the price I'd already decided at £100 it would be a no-brainer. At £200 I'd have to have a serious think about it, but would probably end up with one. I suppose I'd have to be able to play with one to realise its actual value (to me). But it's a little disappointing you cannot just dump video clips into the media pool which for me would suffice. My work around is to connect a laptop or smartphone and drive video clips from there. Certainly a really nice looking addition to the mixing desk, and points for credibility in a client environment. But it's about double what I'd expect to pay for it, so probably won't be buying one soon. Good review though
Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle 4K
Ok, so I’m hoping you can also show photos on this thing as well. I always appreciate the lack of information from Blackmagic on everything.
My iPad does Teleprompting complete with voice recognition, so that it keeps in sync with the spoken words. So this aspect is the least value to me in the BMD gadget.
They have missed a great oportunity... Add an extra HDMI output for alpha so we could play clips with transparency. Also it would have been great for recording in 60fps and playback moments at 24/25/30fps for slow motion replays.
As it is.. I wouldn't buy it. I'm happy using Qlab on a macbook pro for playing clips.
So big question: can it playback clips for instant replay, and in slo mo? How easy would it be to playback the last 12 seconds of a recording immediately after stopping the recording?
I think it would be possible with a little help from Streamdeck and macro's! I'm definitely going to give it a go in my review video to see how possible it really is :)
Is that an Mv7 with an SM7b windscreen?? I love it. I don't know why Shure changed the aesthetics on that one... just make a USB SM7b! It's all we wanted! Now if there was only a way to change the mic holder out so it wasn't so big and stupid looking...
Yes it is indeed. I personally found it helps so much better with plosives. And totally agree, wish they made a version in the same form factor as the SM7B.
I think they completely missed the mark on this. Especially when you consider the overall goal/focus of this new release was collaboration.
It’s a Hyperdeck, with external storage capabilities.
It has network connectivity, so it should be collaborative (storage is accessible).
It has an HDMI in and out. Which means we should be able to monitor it through the Atem Monitor out.
It has a jog wheel which allows for scrubbing.
It has “skip next/previous” buttons for file navigating.
It has a Clip button to cutoff the playing of the source upon completion of the file duration.
But the key thing to remember is that it is an HDMI Source.
Based on everything said above, can someone please explain to me why this thing is not a collaborative media pool control? I would love to be able to control the media pool without having to run a computer beside me on live events. Someone remotely who controls your callers, can quickly do a lower thirds in a nice animation, dump it to the Hyperdeck Shuttle. Talent/controller can then access it and key it with a button tap.
Instead…. we got a $500.00 USB hub… with one USB-C port that basically converts usb files to HDMI playback. Which is nice for $95.00, not $495.00 Now we can use the 2 USB ports on the switcher…. great… for $95.00
I dunno… I think they pooped the bed on this one. BTW I am a BMD fanboy.
I'll wait a year for the upgraded atem extreme iso, where the hyperdeck is included along with the features you mentioned 🙃
@@axeldreyer8972 Let’s hope. But the problem is neither the hyper deck, nor the switcher. The problem is with software control. This update is all about collaboration. So update the Atem Software Control. Let it have access to an entire disk. The issue is getting it from the pool to the player. The entire system for doing it is clunky, limited, and needs a control panel or a more elegant way to get things into the player. All the hardware and connectivity has been there from the start. Why not have a dynamic media pool with clips and 2d… then simply control what goes where using DVE, or the Keyers. One depository on a hyper deck or cloud box and pull what you want, when you want it, and put it wherever you want it…. Instead we got a DVE Clip scrubber and recorder. Which I am still not clear on its usefulness. I digress… I am really excited about his update, with the exception of this device. It borders on useless. Alex got excited about the teleprompter… I use an old iPad and an app that has voice recognition and auto-scrolls to a dynamic cadence. Software was $19.99. I can use doc files, txt files, rtf files, Wordpress docs, etc. THAT is exciting.
Perfect accessory would be a flight stick controlling a gimbal mounted BM camera, controlling XY axis,zoom,record sitting beside an ATEM on your desk. Thumb button cycles through cameras,twist to pan l/r pull/push tilt …index finger trigger stop-start usb c . That would be the cats ass…
We can dream right!! I too would love for BM to make either a mini PTZ camera for the ATEM Mini line, or something similar to what you've just described. Would be great!
@@AlexPettitt before the last 2 years, was going to set up a DJI gimbal with a BM camera to do somewhat the same.dji has or had a remote to do that to a gimbal
The price does not jell with BMD’s history and character.
If they can get this to record and playback at the same time (like DVR), I’d be throwing some cash at them for sure…
Just one word: Vmix. Will this work with vmix, that's the only thing that matters
If you plug the HDMI output into a capture card for VMix, then sure it will :)
Its great.. But shouldn't cost more than the Atem mini.. the teleprompter piece is great but too limited.

@@AlexPettitt I use the teleprompter for zoom calls with my Atem. To be able to screen flip by making this device be an intermediary between the PC output to the Atem input then flip it.. would be so great.
Does this allow you to do replay like for a sporting event
If you can record at 60fps and pay via the wheel…cheap slow motion replay?!
Come on. What pro setting have you been on? This thing is for the bottom feeder. I would never use this on a big show.
