    Can you control the Hyperdeck Mini with the Elgato Stream deck to play specific clips? I'm specifically thinking of clips not loaded into the front panel player as commentary or quips in a talking head sequence.

    Great video. Im looking for something to pair with my ATEM Mini Pro to allow recording of the video (for additional editing post) and live streaming from the mini pro at the same time. Will the hyperdeck mini free up the USB out on the mini pro? Would the hyperdeck shuttle be a cheaper alternative?

    • @djp_video

      This version of the HyperDeck only has an SDI input so you'd need an HDMI-to-SDI converter to connect it to an ATEM Mini. This model has also been replaced by newer versions, the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus ( djp.li/hdsplus ) which does have an HDMI input, and HyperDeck Studio HD Mini ( djp.li/hdstudiohd ) which does not have HDMI.

    Hi Doug. I’m just learning how to use my equipment and I love it but can you tell me what’s the best setting to use for recording. I use the PNY 256GB Elite Performance Class...SD card to record on but I saw in your video that you use a different kind of SD card.

    • @djp_video

      Different cards have different levels of performance, and slower cards can restrict your ability to record in the higher quality formats. I've compiled a list of a few more popular cards and their real-world performance capabilities on my website at djp.li/cardperf. For recording, the number you should care about is the Write speed.
      There isn't a hard and fast rule that will determine which recording formats you can use with a given card. There are a lot of factors that will affect the actual data rate. Higher resolution and more frames per second obviously will require more data than the alternatives, but the amount of motion in a shot, or the amount of fine detail, can dramatically affect the data rate as well. And, obviously the video codec you select makes a huge difference too -- ProRes and DNxHD/HR use much higher data rates than MPEG-4. So to make sure you're able to handle the worst case scenario, it's a good idea to buy the fastest cards you can afford, based on the video formats/resolutions/frame rates that you might want to use. I personally use Lexar 1667X cards, which are capable of writing more than 120 MB/seconds continuously, and are able to handle all of the scenarios that I encounter in ProRes 4:2:2 in 4K at up to 30 frames per second. But if I wanted to move up to ProRes HQ, I'd have to invest in even faster cards.

    Thanks for the video. I was wondering what quality do you record your videos on? I started with 250 gb p/h, but it was way too much for the quality of the cameras. I’d like HD 25/50 fps and use cameras like yours. ProRes 1080 8 bit?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  5 лет назад +1

      I just use the regular "ProRes" setting for most events, which I believe is 10-bit, 4:2:2. The actual bitrate varies depending on resolution, frame rate, and the content itself.

    • @djp_video

      You can use the HDMI and it will show whatever is recording, but during playback you'll only get the playback video, not a looping output of the input source.

    Hey Doug,
    Thanks for another great video. ESPECIALLY thanks for testing and recommending the Lexar cards. I’m putting together a flypack for shooting a specific type of repeating business live-event for a specific client. These events go on literally all day, in 60 to 90 minute sessions, to be shot with multiple PTZ cameras all ISO’d to Hyperdeck Minis (in 1080p 29.97 H.264 which is all the client needs). Wanted to use 256GB cards, and your real-world recommendation was very important since BMD is so far behind on recommending media.
    Three hopefully-quick questions which may also be useful to others.
    (1) You mentioned no loop output from the Mini. I did a test run when renting and did E-E through the Mini’s output to the switcher, which appeared to work fine. I realize if the deck powered off or went into playback mode, that would take over but other than that is there any reason it’s a problem? I’m gonna end up with NINE of those decks, so having to DA every camera output would be a massive PITA.
    (2) On a related topic, for the Television Studio HD, where four of the eight inputs are HDMI, any reason we can’t go SDI into the Mini from the camera to ISO record, then out of the deck’s HDMI to the switcher? Or does it overlay status, TC and VU meter displays on the HDMI output? (In which case we need to add a couple of SDI->HDMI microconverters).
    (3) Since there’s no easy way to inject timecode on anything, or audio on the ISO decks (even ambient sound, since PTZOptics cameras do NOT send audio via SDI) it would be huge if there was some way to start/stop the machines simultaneously (+/- a frame or so) in case we had to do a multi cam re-edit. Any network app you know of that would do that?
    Thanks again for the terrific series of videos. BMD should be subsidizing you!

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 года назад

      Thanks for the positive feedback!
      1. A loop out would pass the input source all the time -- even when playing back video. It would be really handy for ISOs. -- being sure that the camera source is always being passed through to a connected switcher, no matter what the recorder is doing. The full-size HyperDecks do have the loop output.
      2. You could use the HDSM to convert an SDI source to HDMI. But keep in mind that when you aren't in record or preview mode that your input video won't be passed through to HDMI. It'd be easy to forget to put them in preview mode and wonder why you don't have video, or are getting something unexpected, like the first frame of the first clip on the SD card.
      3. The unit will record any time code embedded into the SDI signal, so if you had a common time code source going to all of your cameras, syncing in post shouldn't be too hard. Synchronized start/stop record would require a piece of software to control all units simultaneously. There's likely something out there, but I'm not familiar with a tool for that. I do plan to complete my own someday, but I don't know when that will be.

    12:10 about it continuing to record is actually a good idea IMO! E.g. if an Atomos recorder looses signal it creates a new file instead of going black/dropping the frame... But that means if a cable is disturbed it keeps starting and stopping creating 100s of files all seconds long until you resolve it...

    Hello Doug, I was wondering: If I had 2 of these units and connect them via the REF In / Out and then press RECORD on one of them, does the other one start recording too? So basically: Can you build up a multi-track-recorder that records several sources simultaneously (on different cards though of course)?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  2 года назад +1

      No. The Reference signals only tell them when to start outputting the start of each frame of video. No control commands are sent over that connection.
      To do what you are asking you’d need units that have Remote in and out in addition to Ref in and out. You’d probably also want timecode in and out as well. Three of the four new HyperDeck models introduced this week will be able to do that.

      I'm not aware of a remote way to start and stop recording in the cameras, but the HyperDeck Studio recorders have a feature to automatically start and stop remotely when the appropriate command is received over SDI. You may need to adjust the configuration of the cameras to tell them to send the start/stop signals over SDI.

    TL;DR: In practice, the HyperDeck Studio Mini is useful mainly as a backup video recorder (in addition to your primary videocamera) that can be remotely triggered from an ATEM switcher via network control. Since it cannot make dual recordings to both internal SD cards simultaneously, it is risky to rely on it as your sole recorder at a live event. This risk is compounded by the hazard of the HyperDeck abruptly terminating a recording whenever input video sync is interrupted, however briefly.
    The HyperDeck's playback functions are convenient for review of a freshly recorded track, but of only limited use for live performances. Its four-second delay in switching from record to playback mode makes it impractical for instant replay of live sporting events. The absence of even a rudimentary random access file system makes it cumbersome to use as an animation server. The inability to access its SD card storage over a network by any means other than IP addressing via an FTP utility makes it inaccessible to anyone unfamiliar with network administration. In practice, it would be easier to simply copy prepared animation files to a pair of SD cards for use during an event, presumably complying with Blackmagic's undocumented file naming conventions. This would be adequate for performances requiring nothing more than sequential playback of overlays from a predetermined cue list.

      Back when I first got it, I had trouble with this if the video source wasn't stable, or if I was trying to use cards that are too slow. Hi Doug,

    Output is only for playback?

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  3 года назад +1

      It has two primary modes: Record, and Playback. And within each of these it can be actively recording or playing, or be in standby. While in Record mode it will output the input signal whether it is actually recording or not. While in Playback mode it outputs video from the selected video clip. Switching between modes is done by pressing the Record or Play button while in the other mode.
      My comment that there is no Loop Out means that there isn’t a dedicated output that always outputs the input signal regardless of whether it is playing video or not.

I have had my 2 decks for a couple years now they are solid. But I was just checking in to see if I can learn some new things. @@FlemmingEiberg Since the Micro Studio cameras were designed for live use, they don't support timecode; they have no input for it. The Ursas don't have a timecode input either. As an alternative, you could use something like the Tentacle Sync to record timecode into one of the audio channels, but then you'd have to figure out a way to decode that from the recorded files.

    Doug, Can you tell me what the normal operating function of a HyperDeck controlled by a ATEM Mini is. I am testing a Playback Bee, and when I cut to the input that has the "PlaybackBee" it plays the clip just like a HyperDeck. But when I cut to the next camera, the "PlayoutBee" continues to play the previous clip, in my case it is input 7 and I see it still running in the multi view window. I am wondering if this is how an actual HyperDeck functions. I thought it would stop playing once It is no longer on program. In addition, if I reselect the "PlayoutBee", it does not start from the beginning, it keeps playing from wherever it was, which could be the last few frames, then it stops and holds on the last frame. I know this can be managed manually, but thought I would ask what your experience is since you use them a lot.

      James, if you haven't solved that problem yet, be sure you double and triple check your ip address settings.
      The Hyperdeck must have a unique address. One way to test is to power off the Hyperdeck then ping that ip address. There should be no response from anything. If there is a reply, then there is something else on the network with the same address.
      This can easily happen if your router dhcp range includes the addresses you want for the bmd equipment.
      It can also happen if you enter the wrong address by mistake. That is what happened to me. I was sure that my Hyperdeck had one address, I had written it down and even put it on a label. When I checked I found that I set it wrong and wrote down the wrong numbers.

      also, if you have access to the router settings, you can program in the "dhcp range". Thanks for creating this video. I am a smaller RUclips channel and have been look to add this to my ATEM Mini. The software I use to record my videos records in .MOV. My cameras record to a .MP4 file. I have gone through the manual for the HyperDeck Studio Mini and can see what file formats it will play. I talks about codecs but I dont think in those terms. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  4 года назад

      The HyperDeck Studio Mini is very picky about what video formats it will play. Of course it will play anything that it records, but it is really difficult to make it work with other files, no matter where they come from. I think I can safely tell you that it isn't going to be able to play files recorded by your camera directly.
      There's also a bit of confusion out there about file formats vs video codecs. A video codec (actually CoDec for coder/decoder) refers to the way the contents of the file are compressed. h.264, MPEG-2, etc. are codecs. Each of these different video formats can be stored in different file types. Normally a .mp4 file uses the h.264 codec, but it doesn't have to. Likewise, an MOV extension doesn't really tell you anything about what video code is used inside the file for the video. So an MOV file might use .mp4, or Apple ProRes, or any other number of video codecs. (And beyond the codec, there are various flavors and settings within a codec that can make it incompatible with a particular piece of gear.) Whatever devices or software you use have to support both the file format, the codec, and the specific version of the both. In the case of the HyperDeck Studio Mini, it supports .mov files with very specific implementations of ProRes, DNxHD/HR, or h.264. But, again, it is very, very picky about the files that it will accept and play. So even if you do save a ProRes video into an MOV file, the chance of the HDSM being able to play it is still very, very low.

      @@djp_video Thanks for your explanation. BlackMagic could take some lessons from you. I explained to them that I was a small RUclipsr but they wouldnt even try to meet me halfway.
      Obviously I need to increase my knowledge about codecs vs file formats. Your message was a great explanation of the differences. BlackMagic could have done this very easily.
      As a short term solution, I may shoot the video with the camera and then play it back to the HyperDeck Mini and let it record it. Granted a crude solution but it might get me by until I can figure out a transcoding solution.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  3 года назад

      Blackmagic originally promised this feature when they announced the product, but it hasn't ever materialized. I don't think there is a supported way to trigger playback on one unit from another.
      You could likely rig up something to work. If multiple players are connected to the same reference source (tri-level sync), and you had some way to cue up the first frame of the clip, wait for all to indicate that that command had been executed, then send the Play command to all of them simultaneously, they should stay in sync for the duration of that clip (since they are synced to the same source). The TCP/IP command interface should be sufficient to trigger playback at the same time on multiple decks, as long as those commands are sent at the same time.

    • @djp_video

      Update... I just checked the Ref Out on the HDS Mini and it does indeed provide its own tri-level sync signal. So if you were to connect this to a second unit, those two units would output video frames in sync with one another. You'd still need a way to cue and trigger playback simultaneously, but they should stay in sync once you do.

    • @djp_video
      @djp_video  Год назад

      Have you formatted your SSD using the HyperDeck?
      The T7 isn't a great SSD for use with the HyperDeck. Its sustained write speeds aren't high enough to allow you to record for long periods of time, but it shouldn't quit on you after just a few seconds. The older T5 does a better job. Or the SanDisk SSD Extreme Pro Portable line. I've heard that people have had difficulties using the T7. Personally I create my own using Sabrent USB-C enclosures with Samsung 970/980 NVMe SSDs, and those work great.
      There are a bunch of different SD cards that are known to work. I've had really good luck with Lexar 1667X cards, which is what I use to record videos for this channel. But there are many other options. I have a whole video here on this channel about SD card options (ruclips.net/video/VMtAa3PKBJo/видео.html), and a website setup to help you select a card (djp.li/cardperf).
