- Here is my review of the SKYDIO 2 flying it as any normal person would. The technology is impressive but it does have many limitations that keep the drone from being the "Everything Drone". You'll still need to own a really good camera drone if you wish to do cinematic filming in all situations.

Very good Steve. I have watched many first review videos of the Skydio 2 and yours is one of the better ones. The environment you tested in (the playground) is a reasonable one and not too challenging for autonomous behavior so the Skydio 2 does quite well. Thanks for all you do and wishing you a great 2020!

nicely done cap few things I like to mention 1 when low on power it will come down for a landing regardless where you are so be aware flying in the Ocean 2 low light through tunnels and so on is aprehendsive 3 it won't recognize an oncoming moving object Maybe these things will be fixed on a future firmware update and I'm not a fan on magnets for holding battery had them on my aircraft canopy but had screws as backup too

The video quality is oh so much better than those budget drones you usually review. Again, the video quality is exponentially better than those budget brands. Cinematic ... Yep! Best autonomous drone ... PERIOD!!! Thanks.
That is why budget drones are for people on a budget (inexpensive). Be careful when it comes to comparing a budget drone to a pro drones as your argument will never hold water and someone will call you out on it. It is better to just say that you get what you pay for. Lets say you compare this drone to a $200 drone with sensors, gimble and remote controller. The SKYDIO is 5 times as expensive which means, when you compare budget to pro drones that the pro drone must be 500% better in every category, which when you do the math, never works out that way.

Oh boy!! I was waiting on this review Captain Drone. Your comments in the very beginning about this drone was so on point, it was beautiful to hear. This drone is not for everybody. As I have commented on other channels, the Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom and the Skydio 2 are different types of drones for different types of people. The limitations of this drone for some may be enough to not even bother. Good job, good video, and another drone review that was stellar.

At first I felt like it was good for people who liked being tracked but after watching a video on RUclips where someone used it flying in between trees and in situations where a drone such as a Mavic would never be able to fly without it crashing. I was convinced how great this drone is. I’m hoping to put in an order soon.

I have been a subscriber to your channel for a very long time - and generally enjoy your reviews, and find them very helpful. I have watched you review some the cheapest, less-than basic products that sellers like Banggood and Gear Best has to offer, as well as some higher end products from manufacturers like Autel, Dji and Parrot, as well. However, I have never seen this level of unfairness to a product or company, in ANY of your previous post as you did with this one. I also have this drone, and ordered it on October 1st - at 022:31, of that first day. It arrived only a couple of weeks ago, along with the beacon, controller and an extra battery. When I called or left messages after that initial November ship-schedule (that didn't happen); unlike some other companies - that I also own products from - I always got a prompt reply. Like you, I own more than a few of them: the Mavic Pro, Air, Zoom, Phantom 4 Pro, Tello, a two month old Mavic Mini, an EVO, the old XERO XPLORER, the Parrot BeBop I and II, and an Anafi. This Skydio 2 drone and it's technology is absolutely a Game Changer! Any review that fails to even speak on that, or makes no mention of how far this company has taken Range and Connection performance using only Wifi, is almost an injustice. That's where you usually Shine! Any review of this drone submitted without demonstrating the Beacon and Controller, is like judging the Mavic Pro using only a phone and a wifi signal... Sure, It'll do it, but it ain't gonna be fair to the product - or the people who look to YOU for your input about it's true capabilities. This drone has stood up to All the "Hype" (as others has referred to it), as well (or Better) than ANY drone-product we have seen in the last five years or so. It Does What It Was Designed To Do, BETTER than any other product in it's class - and for less the investment in some cases... Yeah, we pay extra for the controller and the beacon - but we did so for the Phantom 4 Pro controller with the built in monitor, and the Crystal Sky, just to name a few.. Remember the extra Sky Controller for the Parrot BeBop, that supposedly extended the range? And finally, and for the record - Those of us who also owned the Skydio R1, were Discounted an additional $300 - so, our Skydio 2 was only $699. What other drone have you EVER reviewed that offered a concession like that? So while you bitch about how screwed-up they're system is, or how "Not So Great" this drone is - PLEASE Be Fair... That's the main reason I subscribed to your channel In the First Place. Keep up the Great Work - One of 88.8k.

Great review. You have a knack for this stuff.. The Skydio 2 appears to be a really slick one trick pony. Definitely has its place with its optical avoidance technology, I would imagine it's better than anything DJI has to offer in this category.
i have never owned a drone. but i own several bicycles. what you've demonstrated is sufficient for what i want to do. this looks like a great tool for me.

Great review. I was torn between DJI - Mavic 2 Zoom and the Skydio. So now, after your review, I am now leaning toward the DJI Zoom.
Best description for the skydio2. Good job dude. Say it like it is. This WILL not replace the mavic2pro. It's a action cam drone. Period. And with extra restriction that other drone don't have.

Great introduction into what this drone is at the beginning.
That is definitely the drone for me. For mountain biking and everything else. Heck yeah. I really want it. My Mavic air might have to park or go to a new family
Wow, thank you Steve. This was the most realistic perspective review I've seen on this drone to date, and being on the pre-order list I definitely appreciate that. Really, I was attracted to this drone for the safety of obstacle avoidance (and they do have a really flashy video showing off the drone's capabilities). But, you bring up a huge point that I did not consider, that this drone is geared more for autonomous flying, and not for active piloting (which is what I'm looking for). Also, to date, I had not heard of the low light conditions preventing flight (not that I do that often, but just because I can see, might not mean the cameras can see well enough I suppose, right?).
I really want to support this company. However, this does not sound like the style drone that I am looking for as an end-user. I'll have to wait until they decide to test the waters with a piloted-type drone. Thank you for the realistic, "normal person" review!
This is easily the best drone for what I need, follow me technology for music video shots.....I'm so glad you went thru all the features, I'm getting 1 for sure......
I call it a selfie drone, but with sophisticated autonomous features, reminds me of LILY drones, I think that the designation of SKYDIO 2 is more for selfies than cinematic purposes, I'm personally prefer drones that I can fully control to push out my creativity in recording video and capturing picture, anyway good review Capt.

Thank goodness, someone who is actually telling it as it is with this thing. There has been so much hype. Here's the difference, if you use a controller to fly a drone then you are a pilot. If you fly this thing then you are an operator.

Great review and good for you that you got yours delivered. They started selling the Skydio on Oct 1, 2019 - I ordered mine on October 5, 2019 and still hasn't been delivered. They're really overwhelmed I guess.
Oh they are WAY BEHIND. I'm almost certain they will be shipping out production to CHINA in the year 2020.

Gotta say, that tracking and object avoidance are actually so much better than what I thought. Companies usually release products that aren’t fully working. This seems like the homework was well and truly done before they released it. If DJI had just this object avoidance chip built in, it would be the best drone ever made to date. Though it probably is already anyway. 😂 good review

Thanks for the review, very neutral. I personally dont see me ever buying a completely autonomous drone, I never use active track, or follow me mode, or whatever when flying. I like to actually FLY my drones. This review was very helpful in directing toward my next purchase, which wont be this one. Thanks for always keeping it real.
WOW... You are the first to actually say... Flying like a normal Human would. Exactly... I dont know how Skydio got away with it. Releasing a product to the public that is totally autonomous. Its like releasing the autonomous car without testing. And from the USA of all places. You still cant have an autonomous car on the road but you can have this drone that (as you said) only detects stationary object... I am glad I held off on this one. Great review... best ever.

I have been watching many, many reviews of this drone.
It is not perfect but! It is the best at follow me, not perfect but its what I want a drone for. I am a motorcycle car enthusiast and based on all the videos and reviews nothing can compare to this. Once you know it's weaknesses you can use it for its strengths.

Nice vid Cap !! I ordered the beacon, controller, 2 batteries and ND filters two weeks ago. I have them all. My drone arrives Monday (Dec 30). So I'll be all set except for the dual charger. I'm kinda waiting for third party on that one.

Obviously they are goofed up. I ordered mine in June with my deposit they just sent me the final email so that I could complete my order... Late November. Not only did you order yours way later than I did yours even arrived 2 weeks sooner. Insane!
Got a steal of a deal on a phantom 3 4K for around $200 Cad, aside from being a pain to carry around I’m loving it so far although I wish It had some obstacle avoidance so it doesn’t clip something in the follow me mode

I have a few thoughts here. 1) This is THE best tracking drone I've ever seen you review on your channel and I've seen many. 2) I think you COULD take cinematic video with this IF you had the controller. 3) If Skydio could manage to sell this drone with all the xtras at a price point of $750.00 US they would have a runaway winner on their hands. DJI better hope this never happens. Great review
Re point 2) Based on other reviews it's not really good at that, it's now an action drone.
This was a much more concise version of what I was saying above. It's the tech in this drone that should have other companies shaking or spending. It's amazing tech!
Great honest review without the hype Captain, cool tech but at that price with no remote I cant really see why so many are saying its a mavic 2 killer. For certain types of action or vlog filming its great, but for most flyers I cant see it any better than whats already out there. Think myself the V-Coptr Falcon looks more intresting at its price when it comes out.

Pretty detailed review. personally I am not that good at flying drones so this seems it would work for me.
Thank you for being so relevant during your review... there is no such thing as « the best » drone, but devices designed for specific purposes, and it is VERY important to make people realize if some device will fulfill their needs or not, before buying it... and avoiding having people frustrated/disappointed/etc. because the cool/hyped thing was not adapted to them.
I am a proud owner of one of the most badly depicted drone ever... the Parrot disco... actually, it was not a drone (flying quad camera), and many people having bought it for what it was not were so disappointed... while I am fulfilling my dream of free unlimited flight (have 4G connectivity) and being able to look everywhere while flying (it had digital headtracking (look up/down, left/right) with digital hd fpv feed stabilization (even the newest DJI digital fpv doesn’t have it))... for ME it is the best flying device ever, and there is nothing comparable on the market, but most people have other interests and it is very important to help them avoiding making an unadapted buy.

I tried to buy the DISCO in previous years, but they were crazy expensive in Canada, even when they were on sale in the US.
CAPTAIN DRONE I bought 2, 3 months ago (fpv pack, new in box, from major European retailer, shipping included, 152€ each...) and I have more pleasure flying a disco than an actual plane (I have my plane flying license), because of the stabilized fpv (480p or 720p, you chose) and headtracking (with Auriga ), which is unique to the disco and gives me the feeling of flying an actual plane without any of the related stress.
For ME the value of this thing is crazy high, as it replaces hours of plane flying (100€/h)... I posted a few videos on RUclips (screen recorded) to allow people to experiment how it feels to fly a disco...

Wow. I just got done watching Rick at Drone Valley and he did a similar test where he held forward on the "sticks" and flew the Skydio into a densely wooded area. The Skydio proceeded into the woods finding it's way through. In your test it wouldn't fly through the structure. I assume that it must have programming to not fly through a building even if it can see "through it". Most buildings that you can see through usually have windows!

Nice drone (cannot justify the price,certainly not for my use).. However i am more than happy with my drones. Going to buy the latest new Hubsan Zino 2. Nice video Steve.
Pretty smart drone, the biggest drawback is it cannot be used as regular drone if I want to take pictures from long distance. I don't want to take two drones when I travel. Also, don't be overconfident about its obstacle avoidance, computer vision still has trouble in dealing with glass, mirrors, water, some other surfaces with no pattern and low light intensity.

Great Video... I love this drone, other than not being able to fly in low light and the range isn't great. The video quality is very good., the obstacle avoidance is amazing now if only it could float:) I enjoyed my Mavic 2 Pro but I think I will have more fun with this. What is your favorite overall drone?
At the moment i listed Elysium by Mendum when the Skydio 2 started the take off i got shivers down my spine, thats one of my favorite songs!
