Man, you're a good engineer, if you could only make this truly hot-swappable, where we didn't have to pull the face plate off the cabinet and could literally pull off the Tron controller and swap it with a bat or ball joystick, that would be phenomenal! Either way, great work. I love Tron and have absolutely hated playing it with the ball joystick. Very hard to move the arm and shoot and move the man.
Anything's possible further down the road right now we're trying to get something out as soon as we could at a minimal cost
This is my first joystick swap and this video was perfect. I got it right the first time and was done in about an hour. The wiring swap was so easy except for the B button connectors.
Yes the original B button clips are made to hold on really good. But once you get them off..it's quick and easy.. enjoy your GRS TRON

Very cool! I'm so glad to see the new Tron stick working in the Legends Ultimate machine! Really enjoyed the different view angles. Also appreciate that you had this machine parked next to an Arcade 1up machine. Great size comparison. :)
I really like this joystick, installing it in my ALU proved to be a bit of a PITA. Having the dimmer switch is a MUST because without it, it is far too bright. However, with it installed, it illuminates at power-on at the lowest setting which is perfect. The downside is that accessing the controls to change the brightness is next to impossible because the controls end up inside the ALU control deck. Unlike the one shown in this video, the 1.1 has a box with 8 screws holding it in place to the control deck, so you have to remove the entire unit, disconnect everything, remove the bottom, and THEN you can access the control, BUT, because you had to disconnect everything, including power, it makes no difference and is moot. I also wanted to flip the A/B trigger/deflector for other games, and was able to do so, but ultimately, I couldn't use the nice included harness because it made my ALU freak out in the P1 connector on the CTR board. So I had to use the included "generic mod" connectors and ended up cutting/splicing/connecting them in-line. Overall, this is a great option once its installed. I do wish it had an 8lb spring in it, but after getting it installed, I did not want to mess with it anymore. Also, changing out the joystick for a bat/ball top is as much of a PITA as accessing the lighting controls. So don't count on doing that very often if you have an ALU 1.1. Glen makes it look easy-peasy, it's not quite that easy. But I totally support him and this company because the fans really do make the best products!! End of Line.
I saw a guy on Facebook that cut a hole in the bottom panel below the stick so he could easily access the wires to disconnect. I'm going to do that and add some little hinges and a clasp to create a trap door to access the wires to switch to the ball top.

Would be nice if AtGames would include the Tron joystick as a standard option. Great idea. One of my favorite arcade games was Front Line where you were a soldier that could jump in a small and large tank that used a spinner to direct the aim in a 8 direction circle using a spinner and would shoot when pushed down.

@@GlensRetroShow it looks like it is out of stock again. Will you be making a updated installation video for the ALU 1.1 version. I understand that the wiring needs to be different for this version if you wish to illuminate the joystick. Any help would be appreciated on that point. Thanks.
I'd love to get this working with Gorf, Mad Planets, and Satan's Hollow. I think most of us would rather have the Tron joystick on the right like the arcade. The only catch is I'd want to mod a switch where you can set the player 1 joystick between the Tron stick and the balltop to the left. Since most of us aren't going to use 2 player... it would be convenient. However there's not much real estate in the CP for a switcher box..

Anyone know how you wire the player 2 for the led's to work. I have two joysicks but I can't figure out where to connect the second set of led's. Any help would be appreciated.

I just bought and installed this tron joystick. It is weird, it pages left at startup of the alu through the games list (b) but it doesn't work at all during game play. Any idea as to why?

Playing Tron left handed seems so wrong lol. Awesome stuff. I will get one. Tron is my all time favorite arcade game.
Firmware has been updated so I can use the right side and left spinner ;)

Where's the e-mail list to get on when this gets released. Being able to hot change, be backlit is cool. Will the regular joystick have a tobble for 4 and 8 way modes as well?

Hi Glen. I installed the joystick into the number 2 side in the LUA v1.1 but I cant get the trigger to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Please please develop the joystick with button for DoT. I am to timid to take it apart and mod it myself. A up down spinner would be nice to.
The joystick mounting screws provided were too short for ALU v1.1. I had to purchase the correct size M5-0.8 x 20mm.

What Exactly are Gates and how do they work? I assume a Octagonal Gate is a gate that makes that makes the Joystick a 8 way Joystick? What would a Gate that makes a Joystick a 4 way Joystick be called and would that type of gate make playing Maze Games like Pac Man easier because you won't have the problem of diagonals cause unintended diagonal or vertical movement like if you are pushing right but not perfectly and Pac

Is there a way to not have to remove the entire controller panel to switch between the Tron joystick and the Ball Joystick? Essentially, not have to adjust the restrictor plate (underneath) to replace it and use another locking mechanism.
Two of my favourite games are Tron and Starwars. I've bought your joystick for my project but I have a couple of questions. 1. Is it possible to add a button to the top of the joystick as in Discs of Tron. 2, will I be able to patch it into the controller? Is this the same size as the original? The joystick seems smaller (LOL maybe it was bigger when I was younger)
Yes you can for sure mod with an additional buttons for dot 😁 . It is smaller then the original unit as it was designed for smaller at home use. But still looks and plays very well.
With that dual stick setup you should get a session of Assault going!

I feel the same way as you do regarding the preferred control arrangement. So just to confirm, would you be able to install the Tron joystick on the right side position, but use the spinner from the left player’s position? I think that’s the only way I could enjoy playing Tron...I wouldn’t want to have to cross my hands to use the spinner with my left hand. Does the Legends Ultimate allow you to re-map controls, or would you have to make it work this way by wiring it up a certain way?
I was thinking the exact same thing during this video. Part of the Tron experience was the joystick config.
You could... Right nowyou would have to take the left control joystick wire harness and the right control wire harness and swap them... I hope that at games will offer software mode to swap the the Joysticks
If you are willing to give up player two controller just put it there and extend wires to still install it to the player one controls

Hey Glen. Do you know what the new screw size for attaching the base to the control deck would be? I just received your kit yesterday and I started noticing differences while watching this video. First, my LUA has a plastic tray underneath like the Arcade1up control panels which is a bit more of a hassle to get to the wire harness. Secondly when I tried to use the new screws that came in the kit, they were too small for the holes and not long enough. Needless to say I was not able to use the kit. Just wanted to see if you knew anything about the updated screws Atgames are now using. Thanks

I enjoyed the video, very informative, on the 2nd joystick does it also connect to the same connector 5 watt of main board with a 3 way connector?
Swapped tron into 1.1 and finally was able to figure out how to swap tron stick for joystick that's included in kit. I noticed your joystick is bit shorter and feels like more tension. What type joystick is it vs the stock alu and what are spring weights in your joystick. I like the feel much better

Sure can.. the 12 in 1 is just to let the trackball and spinner work as USB device
@@GlensRetroShow my tron Joystick didnt come with an encoder. Where do I get the encoder from? I got it bcuz I seen someone make a 3d printed panel for it. He had an encoder that connected to a usb.... but I dont kno how to hook mines up without the encoder

Reason for everything-in-the-box: You don't need the cab. Hook it up to your Bigscreen for party mode
Any chance for development of a gummy-like restrictor gate for that that would be much more similar to the original Tron game? I understand that the arcade game was sort of a fusion 4/8 way restrictor.
Hi Glen thanks for a great channel on all the modifications available for our home arcade systems. I just recently purchased the Legends ultimate arcade 1.1 edition from Sam's club and am interested in adding on your Tron flight stick. I went to Amazon to purchase both components, but they are out of stock on the GRS Tron Arcade Flight Stick piece of the solution. Do you have any idea when they will be getting more or if there is another place to purchase the item? I am interested in getting this all set-up for Christmas for my boys so I have a little time to find a solution. Thanks again for all the great info for the community.
Amazon is sold out so I bought one from Micro Center but it didn't come with the connector pins to reattach the joystick cable. Same model number as Amazon but clearly different. Buyer beware! Any idea when Amazon may have more of these in stock?
Hey Glen as always great content. I was looking to find out if you are familiar with a similar retail wiring harness you used for B button to make it both functional with your tron stick and the AtGames control panel simultaneously. I was looking to add an xinput encoder board to my Legends cabinet and don't want to lose functionality of the AtGames stock board. Really not looking to use T-connectors that wiring harness looks less time consuming and simpler to return to stock wiring if looking to re-sell someday. Thanks for any input in advance.

Are these joysticks set at 4 way or 8 way and can the be switched to ether or.
TRON by default does not work with the spinner/...how do u fix this??
It's working for me. I am currently using AtGames firmware version 4.3.0 and the spinner works perfectly. I would check your spiner wire connections, try a factory reset and if they don't work contact AtGames technical support.
Glen, are you going to make a video talking about the USB encoder that comes with the TRON joystick? You mentioned in another video that it has some great features, but never talked about them. Thanks
I will do one on the encoder board, I just don't currently have ant led buttons.

Just got my machine and are thinking about this upgrade. Do I need to remove the control deck every time I want to swap out joysticks?
Hi. You do need access to the bottom of the deck to twist the locking ring that holds in the tron joystick or the normal joystick I have the original Legends where it's a wood panel bottom that's easily removable I understand though in the newer machines it's a plastic molded bottom so I'm trying to see if there's another way in the future to make the swap easier

Yes, the GRS Tron joystick wires will reach the player one or player 2 controllers depending on what you would want to put it me personally. Arcade accurate
If the LED to light up the Tron Joystick needs 5 volts Owners of Legends Gamer and Legends Gamer Mini would need a external 5 volt power supply like a USB Home charger?
Yes but you can find 5v on there main board off there internal USB header
That means you would have to have it plugged into the Core Puck thing.
I’m interested in buying this for my Atgames Legend, but I am pretty dumb when it comes to electronics. I understand that I need to buy two things from Amazon for this to work ( is that true?). Also my controller deck is different- it has 10 screws on the back- (not just a flat piece of wood on the back). Is the setup the same with this different version? I wish I was smarter- currently I have to play using a tv since my monitor is not working.
Yes, you need the main kit, then the AtGames upgrade kit. The install is the same on all the units. Sorry about the monitor, did you contact AtGames support?
Glen Planamento thank you, I did contact Atgames and they think it is the scalar board and a new one will ship whenever they are allowed to ship out products (they couldn’t tell me when). I will buy the Tron controller when I can get the monitor fixed. Thank you- it looks really nice:) I wish the back of my controller deck was the same as the one in your video- so much easier to remove.

Sadly they are made in small batches I think. You might see more if theres a lotta dempand otherwise Ebay might be the only way

It's cool you left your Tron Joystick open for those who'd like to mod in an extra button on the face, but would you ever consider selling a version with a face button yourself? I know this would also beg the question, would we ever see a new version of your spinner in a push/pull configuration? I think you know where I'm going with this :) With a version of the GRS Tron Joystick, and a Push/Pull version of the GRS spinner, Discs Of Tron would become a reality! Capcom's Forgotten Worlds would also become a reality with full push/pull spinner gameplay :)
Just some thoughts. Now I'm off to get in a couple of Tempest rounds with my Glenny spinner before I go to bed. Game On!

Glen, is Atgames going to come out with a Firmware Update where we can use the arcades Controllers for a raspberry Pi. They put out that beta one you had to do it through a USB stick but it was only for player one’s controls. I thought I heard their would be a regular Firmware update that would include not only the button and stick use but the Trackball + Spinner and player 2 use control use. Are they still working on that????
Yes, they are working on getting all the controllers working in a future firmware

This is a fact.. Gotta set the GRS up with the 4 way restrictor, which kills it for use with Zaxxon.. Sounds like the new version is gonna be wired up so that swapping the restrictor plate would be easier, which is really smart.. Just gotta stop your friends from wanting play Tron, then Zaxxon, then Tron, then Zaxxon.. Silly Friends.. The dream would be if someone could compile a version of mame that would ignore simultaneous button presses during the light cycle stages of Tron, but allow them for the Spider stage.. When that happens, you can just leave the joystick in 8 way mode and play everything.

This is the version, just have to hack it a bit. Looking forward to full wireless if atgames gets the software sorted and activates the unused spinner connect on the pcb.

@GlensRetroShow oh, that's good! I tried playing Tron last night using player 2, where the Tron joystick is installed, and I couldn't get it to do anything.
@@timsommer9054 on the ad games Legends you need to go into the joystick config and swap the joystick make the joystick for play one the actual player two joystick but keep the spinner as the player one spinner

@GlensRetroShow I guess CoinOpsX only lets you change the buttons but not the joystick. Hopefully that will change when they drop a new version.

It is sort of a catch 22, I have found that the best setup for playing Tron is with the stick set to 4 way mode, that way the light cycles play correctly, this setup of course is no good for Zaxxon, you must have it setup for 8 way.. The Tron stick comes with restrictor plates that allow for 4 way use and 8 way use, so if the wiring is setup correctly so that you can easily unplug the wires, swap restrictor plates and wires and reattach, that would be ideal.. 4 way for Tron, 8 way for Zaxxon.. A dream come true for all of us, would be if someone could compile a version of Tron the would ignore 2 simultaneous presses during the light cycle stages, so we could move diagonally when facing the spiders but only go left right up down in the light cycle level.. Hey all you genius coders out there, make it happen, I know I personally would buy you a virtual beer..
