  • In this video we look at the Chrysler Aspen! This is another episode that looks at the history of the car, major flaws, and why it got discontinued so fast! The Aspen was basically a luxury Dodge Durango, but it had a super brief life of just three model years and under 65,000 total sales units. This SUV just didn't do it right and had 6 major flaws and reasons that I felt caused this car to be cancelled. Watch along for a full history of this car from inception in 2007 to cancellation in 2009!

We bought our Aspen in 2007 with the 5.7 Hemi and 11 miles from the dealer. It is now 2022 and the car has 315k miles and still climbing. In all those years and with regular maintenance the only parts that have been replaced are a fuel pump and water pump, both in 2021. It is without a doubt one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. Haven’t had any of the problems listed in the video and still drive it everyday. It is very stable on the road and has all the power to pull what I need it to. Has been a joy to own. Hope to go to 500k miles with it!

The problems mentioned in this video are more general problems that plagued the industry as a whole during that era. Not specifically a Chrysler problem. The remote start for example, never worked right back then. It's the type of signal transmitted. Very easy to catch interference, and other times it won't pick it up. This was common in a plethora of vehicles back then.
The power tailgate is another. The gears are plastic and strip out. As soon as your support rods get weak and the motor has to take on the brunt of the load opening and closing the lid, it strips the gears very quickly. This was another common problem with many cars of that era. It's when power tailgates started to take off.
A/C is a legit concern. Mine has seen two evaporators fail. Although I will admit, the first unit was aftermarket (TYC) and it failed maybe 14 months later. I replaced it with an OEM and so far so good, but I had to yank the dash off twice. 😑 I've also had various leaks here and there that required me to open up the system and repair.
The factory alarm is a somewhat common issue. Usually the culprit is the integrated power module that fails. A somewhat pricey part. Outside of that, it's been bulletproof.

Mine just rolled over to 200k and it still runs really strong, and get 16mpg down the road. It is so nice and with the towing package tows more than many quarter ton pickups. Its a luxury SUV without being ridiculous like the escalade. I've only replaced the water pump and cylinder deactivation solenoid. Smallest by outside measurements but its perfect. Easy to drive in town and park. My dad bought it and i bought it after he passed, he always took it to the dealer for maintenance, he drove it so easy and took such good care and thats so important

That's a big undertaking compared to why a single model failed. Plymouth failed because it had become nothing but a "poverty spec" Dodge (to borrow an English term). The PT Cruiser was supposed to have been a Plymouth, but got rebadged a Chrysler due to the impending end of the make.
Eagle never had it's own identity. It sold rebadged Renaults (including the Premier), left over AMCs, some Mitsubishis and a Concorde clone. The Chrysler 300M was originally going to be an Eagle, but, like the PT Cruiser, got rebadged as a Chrysler at the last minute.

FYI the body was completely different than a 04-06 Durango. When the Durango was refreshed in 2007, there were more similarities, but still a different stamping. Pay attention to the rear quarters. Also, this platform was actually unibody-on-frame. Extremely tight body mounted on the frame, and WAY better fit and finish than GM/fords of the day. There is more details about these as well...

I have a 2007 Aspen that we got in 09 and I'm still driving it with almost 200k miles on it. Even though my husband has a Corvette and we recently got a 2019 RAM truck, I usually chose to take the Aspen when all are home. I drive up to 200 miles a day for my job and this is my work vehicle since it's roomy enough to haul my equipment and I live in central Illinois (sad, I know) where the winter driving conditions are miserable. I affectionately call her my "She-Beast" because my Aspen will get through anything! It's sure-footed on snow and ice, I've never gotten stuck ever. The Hemi allows me to pass other drivers quickly and safely. It even withstood being parked outside during a tornado without so much as a scratch and when I was surrounded by downed trees and branches yet absolutely needed to get out, I just drove over them without so much as a hiccup. It's a shame they didn't make more of these. The only downside is the poor gas mileage, which at best on the highway and with cruise control on, is about 19 mpg. Still I expect that for a heavy SUV. Over the years I've had to do basic maintenance of course and have replaced a few minor things regarding emission control and there have been some random computer codes pop up. The only downside to the interior is that every single Aspen will lose the plastic cover that goes over where the driver and passenger seat belts begin at the side of the seats. Nothing will keep those things on there except maybe Crazy Glue. The leather seats will break down and crack on the outside edge of the frequently used drivers seat; inevitable over time. But I still find it to be extremely comfortable. I've had many people ask me if I want to sell it since we've kept it in great condition and there's not a spot of rust on it but there's no way I'd sell. I tell everyone I'll drive it til she drops. My husbands drives it instead of his Vette on bad winter weather days so it's a good back up for him when I'm not driving it. If you can find one of these used, snatch it up. It's been one of the best vehicles I"ve ever owned, out of at least 20 in my lifetime.

The SUV market is hot, Chrysler has been gaining in trustworthiness and popularity with their new engine offerings and transmissions that were not available in 07- 09, the Pacifica is selling like crazy and quite frankly for Dodge / Chrysler to stay relevant they really NEED another couple of offerings in the fullsize / midsize SUV market. The only drawback of the 5.7 L Hemi motor is the aluminum valve seats. If the motor overheats, due to low coolant, the valve seats are the weak link. Just always make sure coolant and temperatures are where they should be. I own an '07 Aspen with Hemi motor and 136k miles on it and couldn't be happier. I bought a 2007 Aspen with a 345 hemi in 2017 that had 189k miles on it. I indeed have issues with the A/C but outside of that, the thing is a tank. I got caught in a tropical storm driving home from work a telephone pole fell in the road in front of me. I had no time to stop without crashing so I just drove the Aspen right over/throught it. It went over it with no problem at all and saved my life or my wallet at least, lol. I use it as my inclement weather mobile and she hasn't let me down yet. Great vehicle. It's definitely not a racer but it will surprise you sometimes. My boat and trailer top off at about 4,900 lbs and I was towing it with a 1995 Chevy Astro 4.3 Vortec and 5,000 lb tow range. I bought the aspen because I could not find a 1/2 ton van. I found a 2009 hemi-HYBRID at a local dealership. The hybrid battery was depleted and the dealership was going to junk it. I bought it for $1000, then paid $280 to have it towed home.
I reconditioned the 40 cell hybrid battery, one cell at a time. This cost me time, but no money, except buying a special charger for $65.
Once the hybrid battery was reconditioned, the hybrid dash light went off, and the hemi fired right up. I changed the oil, and oil & air filters, and now use it for a daily driver.
For the $1400 investment, I don't care about the plastic interior. I loaded the hard drive full of tunes (the 9 speaker Alpine stereo, including subwoofer, rocks!) and cruise around the neighborhood on battery, engine off at stoplights. It's fascinating, even with the engine off, the heat, air conditioning, and power steering all work normally because of the hybrid system. When towing, or on freeway on-ramps the rush of the hemi is exhilarating, and addicting. There's plenty of power! I've been on two multi-state road trips and had no problems. It drives like a dream!
The ac inverter, back-up sensors, power liftgate, front and back heat/ac, sirius xm, navigation system, memory seats/pedals/mirrors, dual front climate control, and so much more, are really convenient! But the thing I like best is that I can set the cruise control on 70 mph, and watch it go into four cylinder mode. It will stay there (rarely go to 8 cylinders) because the hybrid system kicks in and gives it boost from the battery on uphill sections. Stop and go, town, highway, combined I'm still averaging nearly 22 mpg.
It looks good, it's a rare blue color (most are a lemon-white) it drives good, it's got boatloads of room, even the third row seat folds down - you don't have to take it out like you do on my suburban - it's convenient, it's all wheel drive, it has gobs of power, yet it gets nearly 22 mpg combined.
    Best vehicle I've ever owned!!!

The issues would have been worked out but the automotive crash in 2009 was the BIG reason for the early demise. Not to mention the Dodge Magnum also got caught up in the 2008/2009 crash. And Chrysler had and still has a habit of putting new model into the market place and then forgetting them !

I've owned my 2007 Aspen for 3 years now and besides a new battery, replacing all wheel pressure sensors(were stock 2007) and an #7MDS sensor failing, I have had some wonky problems with some of the electronic subsystems in it, heated seats error pulling to much amperage (both seats), radio amplifier and channel faults, Rear lift gate to far fault, rear ac control(can't remember exact wording on that one) and a few others. I ended up getting a 320amp Alternator from Mechman to replace the stock 160amp and built a fuse panel in the engine compartment to take some subsystems off the computer(to clear the faults). And to support new subwoofer behind 3rd row. But I love the Aspen! Ride is nice and it's been a very nice machine to me:).

I had a 2006 Dodge Durango with the 5.7 Hemi. Always wanted the Aspen cause I loved that Durango. Would still buy a used 09' if I could find one in excellent condition. The only thing with the Hemi is you are supposed to only use mid grade gas as a minimum, and it sucked gas, but damn did it have power. I have a truck right now that I'm not happy with, but one of the used vehicles that is still an option if I can find a fully loaded one for the right price is a Chrysler Aspen. Came across some lately, but are usually beat up on the interior, or too high of price. The 3rd row seat is what sells it to me but cant afford a new Durango, dont want a base model one, and the Aspen would meet my needs. Also looks better than its Durango counterpart from that time.

Keye T shouldn’t. Plenty of success stories grand Cherokees going 200k miles with little issues. My friends mom has a 2013 got it new 101k Miles now and she said only thing was a check engine light that I know of. My 2015 Chrysler 200 has 111000 miles and it has had issues but never stranded. Oil leak and coolant leak. Main thing you have to worry about is faults codes. I had a “service transmission “ light when it’s fine. And a airbag light and engine light. But no reliability issues outside of the leaks. I love my car and am trading this one in for ANOTHER ONE. I mean what else is there to buy a Camry ? A Malibu ? Idc about reliability if it means the grille has to look like it’s gonna EAT you “Camry “ I’ll stick to my gamble with chrysler cars. They treat my family well with 30+ years of buying and our 2009 town and country with 140k miles and goes STRONG Nd our 2002 chrysler Sebring 2.7 and it JUST got a engine knock after bing. Daily sine 2002. NO issues with the Sebring at all whatsoever. I’ll never change companies

Pentastar Nate It's funny you said that because I had it Uber driver who had a grand Cherokee and he said he got it in 2014 and he hadn't had any issues except a random check engine light that went away so maybe its ok But I am coming from a long line of Toyota/Lexus so I'm very strict with the reliability, I always expect my next car to be more reliable than the last, although it's harder with newer vehicles

i got a leftover at the end of 2008 and still have it today. I have been extremely happy with the vehicle. Power from the HEMI is fantastic, all wheel drive and traction control works great. I now have 175000 miles on it and am replacing the shocks this weekend. I have replaced the fuel pump (4 months ago), the rack and pinion (4 months ago), alternator twice, oil pressure sensor, tires, brakes (2 front drivers side calipers) and that's it. in my opinion not bad for a 12 year old vehicle. Great room inside the vehicle for long trips (used a hitch-haul for the luggage) so 5 passengers could use all 3 rows. Just used it to tow my son's jeep up to a shop which is about a 7000 lb trailer + jeep load and it pulled it like a champ. I change the oil every 5000 miles. I did disconnect the electronics to the transfer case due to a bad transfer case shift motor, which means I am stuck in all wheel drive (all i really need), but I do have the new transfer case shift motor that I have to install.
I would love to see chrysler come out with another truck based SUV...side note, my other truck is a 1987 Dodge Ramcharger...

We loved our Aspen. Absolutely no problems.
While you may be correct in your assessment I think you overlooked a huge point in the reason for its cancellation.
We purchased our 2008 Aspen from Enterprise Car Sales with 17,000 miles on it in the fall of 2008.
It was at a time when gasoline was at its highest nearing four dollars a gallon in the Tulsa area.
No one was renting big vehicles and no one buying them.
Enterprise was selling off its big-engined vehicles. For a vehicle that was new at 36G dollars, we paid 17.9G in the same year it was manufactured. We took the chance that fuel prices would decrease.
We experienced none of the problems you describe. In fact we thought it was the best built vehicle we ever owned. Our only regret is buying a rear wheel drive instead of an all wheel drive model.
The following summer we drove it vacationing. Durango, Grand Canyon, the Mexico border. It never failed us and when Arizona was 117 at 11pm, we were cool and comfortable.
I would suggest you rethink your reasons for its failure as 2008 was the year that seemed everyone was dumping their big SUVs.
    But I love your video.
