- Pokémon Heart Gold, but I steal each Gym leaders Pokémon!
The Johto Gym leaders are notorious for being bad. Not just their level caps, but also their Pokémon teams. In this challenge run, I wanted to see if they were strong enough to defeat each other. Basically, after beating Falkner, I will take his Pokémon, and use them exclusively to face Bugsy. I'll then use Bugys Pokémon to defeat Whitney, and so one.
Let's see if these gym leaders are strong enough to do it!

You know, it is a crazy realization that every Johto leader except Bugsy has a type advantage of some kind. Whitney having immunity to ghosts and the rest having super effective stab on the following leader.
Yeah it’s an interesting relation I didn’t realize till I started planning this specific run
@@NuzlockeJoeI just realized the same 😂
Morty on chuck?
@@Elite4koga Ghost is immune to Fighting. Its another immunity, still a type advantage but I misspoke in saying the rest were stab.
such a good concept of a mod! it's so unique!! normally someone would play as one specific character, but you are playing as 8 characters!
Well actually, more like 16
@@NuzlockeJoe 17 if you count Trainer with Cyndaquil and Gastly
23 including the elite four and Lance and the fact that you had to use a couple Pokémon for the first gym
@@NuzlockeJoe i suck at counting
I think it's interesting that almost every Gym leader in Johto is structured to be strong against the next one, Falkner has the advantage on Bugsy, Chuck has the advantage on Jasmine, Pryce has it on Clair, and so on. Even the Elite 4 almost follows this as Will beats Koga, then Bruno beats Karen. This was a pretty fun idea Joe!
Yeah I started with Johto because it seemed the most doable. Especially when compared to Gen 3 and 4 regions
this should be a series, but for future generations maybe have it follow a set of rules, the 1st attempt is their exact team, the 2nd is the exact pokemon but leveled to match the caps, then if that cant win your able to change moves items etc
Yeah maybe. I didn’t have too many consecutive losses, or I would have had to change the rules to make it more doable
Fun idea and video
Was poetic that would get to end this using Blue's team to beat Red
Yeah it was certainly a solid ending.
22:33 Chloroform?! That’s a deeply concerning Pokémon ability.
I mean there are two ways to outspeed. Either be faster, or use chloroform on your opponents. They both work
If we're being real, sleep powder can just be renamed. @@NuzlockeJoe
@@NuzlockeJoe you aren’t wrong, not hard to outrun the unconscious.
Well Square Up because Chikorita is obviously the best Johto starter
Alright bring it!
Your living in a dream world.
@@manjusahoo4956 chikorita is the cutest and is only considered bad due to the gyms it has to go against put it in Kanto and it would obviously be a better pick then Totodile or Cyndaquil, guess because Charmander struggles against Brock and Misty that makes Charmander a bad starter
@@kronos13blackcat its movepool also sucks
Oh!!! This is a clever challenge! And I love that you're named Duplica! 😃👍
A very fun idea!
I hope you do more of these for the other games.
Won't be as time consuming in most of them either haha.
Very nice idea! Also great taste in the starter selection 🦔
I’m glad you agree. That means we don’t have to fight
Yeah! My man Joe is back!
Really interesting idea!
Thanks!
You missed a "Goose is cooked" joke after Falkner.
Fax they can fight on that to 0:33
Just finished silver with monotype normal types. That tauros was SICK
This was good
Can we get a story about protagonist, Jimmy or Ethan what happened to him after legend of thunder
Got nothing to add. Great video, creative concept, comment for algorithm
Thanks! I think I turned out well
Def totodile is best after the split.
I mean he’s better after the split, but typhlosion is so cool!
You should do this challenge again but only keep the ace pokemon. For example you keep pidgetto and when you face bugsy you keep scyther. And when you face Whitney you can use both pigetto and scyther and once you have more than 6 members you can swap through them for the next gym
I wonder how kanto games will be since most gym leaders are weak to the next
Yeah, I would never even get past Misty like this.
i actually been wanting to do something like this, but i need to switch my team to whoever i beat last
That would be even more work lol
I've never played HG/SS, does Scyther not have Fury Cutter in it?
Don't toy speak that slander against my crocodile
Awesome
man. kinda wanna try this in rejuvenation
Rejuvenation? Is that a hack?
@@NuzlockeJoe Fan game, and best pokemon game ive played.
Almost anytime you are at a type advantage in these battles
Blame the game not the player (I’m not saying you are)
To be fair, I chose Johto because it’s one of the only first few regions where I was confident the first gym leader had a chance against the second.
@@NuzlockeJoe I was just surprised about this. Wonder, how common it is, that consecutive gyms aren't neutral towards each other
@@derAlphabet
Kanto: Rock < Water < Electric < Grass < Poison < Psychic = Fire < Ground
This challenge would be absolutely abysmal cuz you're constantly on the backfoot
Johto: Flying > Bug = Scrappy Miltank > Ghost > Fighting > Steel > Ice > Dragon
Nearly the opposite
Hoenn: Rock < Fighting = Electric = Fire = Normal = Flying = Psychic = Water
Roxanne gets bodied by Brawly but otherwise mostly neutral matchups
Sinnoh: Rock < Grass = Ghost > Fighting = Water = Steel > Ice = Electric
Again, aside from Byron's advantage against Candice, it's mostly neutral with just Roark getting absolutely creamed by Gardenia
BW: Monke = Normal = Bug = Electric < Ground < Flying < Ice > Dragon
B2W2: Normal = Poison > Bug = Electric < Ground < Flying = Dragon > Water
Unova would be rough
Kalos: Bug < Rock < Fighting = Grass > Electric = Fairy = Psychic = Ice
Kalos also is rather bad
Sw: Grass > Water > Fire = Fighting < Fairy = Ice = Dark = Dragon
Sh: Grass > Water > Fire = Ghost = Fairy = Ice = Dark = Dragon
swsh ar emostly balanced, only Bea's team might have trouble with Opal's
Paldea: Bug > Grass > Electric > Water = Normal = Ghost > Psychic = Ice
Also quite an easy time
When deciding which region to do this in, I looked at the first four which are the ones I know best. And out of those four, it seemed like only Johto could get off the ground.
Do the Kanto vs Johto gym battle, like Kanto 1st gym vs Johto 1st gym.
And also add blue team vs Silver team rival battle base on your badge you have.✌️
That would actually be really interesting! See which is the better region
don't messpeon with espeon
Liked an subscribed only cuz you are a cyndaquill enjoyer (still early on vid. Ill be back later on)
Honestly this lowkey is interesting idea since johto gym leaders are giga ass. Like 8 gym leaders and overall 4 johtonian pokemon.
Kanto has like the double the johto rep
Seriously, Its a sad state of affairs
@@NuzlockeJoe like so true besties.
Like falkner could have had hoothoot or skarmory(if you wanted to retain level 9 raid boss), bugsy could have had spinarak and ledyba over cocoon, morty could have had misdreavus, chuck could have had heracross or hitmontop and so on...
Hitmonlee did not have blaze kick in the remakes of gen 2 hes my fav fighting type I should know considering he doesn't learn that move whatsoever from lvling it meens u used a tm on em
He may not learn it, but I just used PKHex to copy the moves that Kogas hitmonlee had.
@@NuzlockeJoe u meen bruno?
@@NuzlockeJoe Koga is the ninja guy with poison types
Yeah Bruno. Just hitmoblee had blaze kick so I gave mine it too
@@NuzlockeJoe maybe I'm thinking of original gen 2
I will fight you on that 🐊
10:22 34 steelix?
It's not just stealing Pokemon but also stealing the gym leader's identity making you an skin stealer
That just sounds soo much worse though...
How is stomp able to hit ghosts? Isn't stomp a normal move? And aren't normal moves ineffective against ghosts? 🤔
Also, comments are good for the RUclips algorithm
Nevermind haha I just needed to pay better attention lol
No problem, thanks for the algorithm boost!
@@NuzlockeJoe this was a neat nuzlocke! After I'm finished with my current challenge run I plan on playing Silver as Schoolboy Nate (Ledian and Exeggutor only). Sounds very manageable on paper.....I feel like it may actually be a nightmare haha
U should do a bruno run
Mega Trainer
The Scyther should have been female going into the 3rd gym! the attract got you the first time.
Yeah, there were a number of genders I messed up, it just so happened that scyther was one of the few important ones
Do this in R/B/Y/FR/LG lol
In kanto it would be a very fast run. I’d never get past Misty
Their teams seem decent to me.
My main issue is the surprising lack of Johto Pokémon for the Johto leaders. Only half of the Johto leaders even have a Johto Pokemon, and the ones that do have a single one. Could have been a great opportunity to introduce newer pokemon. Even a hoothoot against falker would be OK
@@NuzlockeJoe That would be a good idea.
@@NuzlockeJoe to be fair they fixed that in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. There’s only one gym leader who doesn’t have a Hoenn Pokemon.
Wait how did miltank use stomp on gastly? 6:40
That miltank had scrappy, the ability that lets normal and fighting move hit ghosts. It was mighty convenient actually.
@@NuzlockeJoe yeah I asked that question but then literally found out the answer like 2 seconds later 😭
In the video
I wonder... Is it possible to start with a level 100 pokemon and still win? It won't obey for quite some time.
Just pick the worst pokemon in existence
Yeah I imagine it would be. Even if they only obey once every few turns, you’d take basically no damage
Yeah true 🤔 maybe a twist on it... I will think a bit more on it and come back to you!
It'd need to have a different ID number for that to work, so you'd essentially have a Level 100 "traded" Pokémon for the entire game.
Busy has a female Scyther, did you not see the gender next to the pokemon's name?
I mean, I didn’t really pay attention to genders until I got to Whitney and realized I should have.
10:40 ??! A delibird? That ice type who only has ‘present’ as a move that has a chance of either healing your foe or doing damage, that if I remember right is normal type..? Yeah, it’d just make his gym easier to beat.. And even though it’s a ice gym, doesn’t mean the leader should actually have all ice types, as unlike the show, in these games, their Pokémon don’t easily beat type advantage and a gym needs that not type themed surprise to help keep one on their toes some. Plus, it’s a non ice type but an early form of dewgong, an actual ice type so… It’s not a completely random basic water type.
They need more games where the gym leader has that one special, not so gym type themed mon; and at least seem like they are trying to dodge a player managing to get an easy gym sweep with the right Pokémon lol…
Sneasel, less it has Ice Punch via egg move or teaching… It ain’t no big ice threat… Next to no special Atk and only learned physical ice move a priority Ice Shard… Plus sneasel is already insanely fast so, the priority changes lil imo, but a weak move… So it’d be *if you ask me* a super weak addition.
Sure Delibird only learns present naturally, but there are plenty of TMs he can use.
And I get having a Pokémon whole isn’t necessarily the type of the gym leader, but IMO that only works if it’s not the base form of a pokemon they already have. Having a seal and dewgong seems stupid to me
I think it's really funny that people complain that Johto pokemon suck, the Johto gym leaders suck, but then say the way to fix the gym leaders is to give them the shitty Johto pokemon. Seel in theory is great for Pryce because it being a water type would surprise and mess with people leading with fire/rock types to beat ice types. Seel sucks and is too weak to actually do that but it's still better than Delibird or Sneasel which are both gonna die instantly to quilava flame wheel or graveler rock throw
@@NuzlockeJoe I’m sorry, I mean no disrespect or criticism… I am just sharing *my own opinion* on your in video comment. Gym leader’s often only have just one tm move their Pkmn might be taught and I don’t recall if he had a tm he put on all his team members… If not, it’d only have present… Plus they’d have to be one Delibird CAN learn and be it’s only move, as Present would be imo a bad move to leave on it, with the rng of healing and helping the player… We don’t need the AI doing anything to help & make the battle easier with odds EVER… If you ask me. I just am sharing a thought; sorry if it upset you…
We all have thoughts I am sure on how a gym battle could be better in some way but also… We all may have the thought that it’s fine as is… Also, I am sure they make certain choices for certain reasons…
Maybe one day a Pokémon game will have a difficultly setting for a run that alters move set ups and/ or Pokemon of gym leaders and such… Though probably won’t happen but… would be a interesting choice for a game direction that hav never tried..
@@findtheblue I just wish in Scarlet/ Violet, that I didn’t feel like I am the only one who thinks it’s annoying that those gym leaders aren’t programmed with some smarts… You have a fire type like Fuecoco as he sends out his Sudowodo and instead of the npc keeping it as is with the type advantage, he still immediately turns his rock into a easily crushed by a fire type, grass mon.. 🫣😖
They just have gym leaders in it throw battles by not utilizing advantage of initial type advantage of Ace Pokemon in certain situations… THAT is annoying…
Seel being a basic water imo helps and lol is typical of gym leaders… (For example:) Back in Kanto with Misty with her Staryu & Starmi… that I think people might forget about- as Misty I suspect might be forgettable, less you do challenge runs of it- or like me, watch a lot of challenge runs (RUclipsr: JRose11 content lol)
Not using items in battle would mean no held items. Although I like the video concept. That's a hang up for me.
No, it does not. That's a pretty standard rule that means not using the bag in battle, so no healing potions, status heals, and no X-items.
Literally never seen anybody not use held items when following that rule
I look forward to your videos where you play these games using no hold items :)
This is hardly a challenge. 6 of 7 have a type advantage over the next gym leader.
But it’s cool 😎
I mean, you’re right about the type advantages, but beating Clair as Pryce is no simple feat.
Though that is the reason I chose Johto over say kanto or Hoenn. Mainly because the second gun would be incredibly difficult.
First ❤
Grow up!
I will fight you on the best Gen 2 starter because it’s definitely Totodile 🥲
How dare come to my channel and voice such an opinion!
