  • In this video, I test out the new Sony a7RIV (a7R4) with the Sony 200-600G lens for the first time. As always, I test it out with some backyard birds. I really wanted to test out how the files held up to heavy cropping, and I will say I'm quite happy with the results. Let me know what you think! Hope you enjoyed, and HAPPY BIRDING!

    Hey everyone! Thanks for watching the video. Since I’m guessing most of you will be using this camera for wildlife, and with wildlife generally comes a fair bit of cropping, I really wanted to show many examples of cropping on both full frame and S35/Crop mode images. A few other things about the camera that I didn’t mention in the video:
    1. Depending the speed of your computer, it may take a few seconds before Lightroom displays the full resolution of your image. Several times when reviewing images, I thought I had motion blur or had missed focus because the image seemed blurry. But then a few seconds later, Lightroom caught up and the full resolution preview of the images showed they were in fact sharp. So when culling your images after a day in the field, make sure the “bad” images are actually bad!
    2. I would definitely practice your noise reduction. With such a high megapixel camera, I can see there being a lot of noise when pushing higher ISOs in darker settings, like in forests.
    Especially when cropping in those situations.
    3. The bird footage was taken using a Picture Profile I’ve never used before (PP1). I wanted to test it out, and I hate it lol. I will try a few others, but I think I will stick to the one I was using on my a7III, which is Cine4.
    Again, thanks for watching, and HAPPY BIRDING!

      Hi Stefano, recently watched a Nick Page vid where he was shooting NFL with the R4 and 600mm and he commented that the R4 doesn't handle noise as well as the A9 which I guess is to be expected given the megapixels of the sensor. In respect of noise, go download ToPaz denoise AI, 30 day free trial and works with lightroom and photoshop, I downloaded it on Saturday evening and it's incredible. Have a good week mate.

    Oh, and you should definitely try for the abstract feather images. You will most likely have to crop in post to get the best "composition" but if you concentrate on getting great light on the feathers then the hardest part is done. I love doing this with ducks as some (i.e. Mallard) have iridescent type feathers that really POP when the light hits them at a certain angle.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  4 года назад +1

      Yeah I think I will have to crop on majority of them. Unless I can get the bird very close. Maybe feeder birds like hummingbirds and Tanagers it will work nicely. It's crazy how some ducks just light up with color when they're in the right lighting, they're great subjects!

    Interesting review, thanks. I would love to have both the A7R4 and A9. I can’t justify getting it so soon after the A9 though. Interestingly the A9 suffers from the same problem of slowness after just waking up. I’ve turned off sleep mode and found I’m not consuming more power/batteries. A full day of birding from sunrise to sunset only needs one and a half batteries. So with the battery grip, which holds two, I never need to change battery in the field. I think the waking up consumes a lot of power and memory. Thanks, another good video.

  • @gordonnorman8259
    @gordonnorman8259 4 года назад +1

    Very nice shots and crops - you're gonna love that 200-600 in Mindo! I don't know of any easy solution to the buffer clearing hiatus other than minimizing it with lower resolution (a9 FF or APS-C), lower burst rate (10 or even 5 FPS vs. 20 on a9), and/or faster cards (Sony SD cards are marginally faster than Lexar). I have learned to shoot relatively short bursts intermittently with moving birds rather than nailing down the shutter for many seconds. I envy the resolution of the a7Riv but believe it or not, I cannot tell any difference between a9 FF (24.2 MP) vs. APS-C (11 MP) shots on my 15" hi res Dell screen pre-crop, but with significant cropping the difference becomes apparent.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  4 года назад

      Yeah exactly, I think I'll have to make a judgement call whether I think my subject will come closer, and then decide if I jump into crop mode. I noticed the same thing with the A7RIV files. Only once you start zooming in will you start noticing a difference. But the 26MP images had a lot more detail than I thought they would. A good surprise lol!

    Recently found your site and am really enjoying it. I like you (use to be) am shooting with my A7III and Sigma 150-600 and MC11. SHARP as you could want but a good 60-70% out of focus. The lens seems to hunt focus quite a bit. I keep blaming it on me, technique/settings. Just wondering if you had similar issues before stepping up to the 200-600 Sony? Thanks again, wonderful videos. Good lux

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  4 года назад

      Sorry for the delay! Yes, I had the same issues with the Sigma. It just never felt quite right on the a7iii. I remember I did a firmware update to the MC-11 adapter and that helped a lot (not sure if it has gotten better since then). But once trying the 200-600, you immediately realize the difference in performance. Either that lens or the 100-400 is a huge step-up. I'd love to see Sigma or Tamron release the 150-600 for E-mount. Tamron's shorter zooms have amazing AF on the E-mount, so I think if they produced their 150-600 it would be a huge hit (and way more affordable).

      After some time you will be fine with Sony menus. Give it time.. too many complain because they don't take the time to learn and setup their cameras. I came from the A7rii to A7RIV and I had no issues with the menu at all. Granted I was familiar with a previous Sony... Like any other system you get used to specific functions and menus. Good luck

      @@StefanoIaniro I went for the 100-400mm. I thought about the 200-600 (slightly cheaper) but it has a much longer minimum focusing distance. Given that most animals I photograph are small and close up, the 100-400 was a better option. Plus, with the A7RIV's resolution, cropping isn't really a problem. For Flying Foxes, spring and summer is best - even in the city of Brisbane there are lots of parks where you can photograph them pretty close. If you search Wikimedia Commons for "Grey_headed_flying_fox__-skimming_water-__AndrewMercer_-_DSC00530.jpg" you'll see one my efforts at least. The only thing I have... I played a lot with the settings to try to get thing to most out of it and sometimes when focussing I get on the viewfinder a square and a message focus cancel and I cannot focus correctly anymore (I need to cancel). @@filipposg Hi Filippos, I bought the Sony Camera with a 100-400 mm GM lens and I'm using my Canon lenses (70-200mm 2.8, 300mm 2.8 prime lens, 24-70mm 2.8) in combination with the MC11 converter. The MC11 has no issues reading these lenses and BIF shooting is great. During the first week I had a focus issue with a message popping up sometimes "focus cancel". It took me a while to find out the root cause: when using the viewfinder my nose touched the LCD screen ("touch" functionality was active) which was causing this issue. When switching off this functionality it works seamless. I also do have non-Canon lenses which work fine with the MC-11 converter (Sigma 85mm 1.4, Tokina 16-28 mm 2.8 -> great lenses) and I'm happy that I did the move to Sony as you can continue using the other lenses. When budget allows you can make the switch to some Sony lenses but it is not really needed. I also have a Canon teleconverter 2.0. It works fine in combination with the Canon 300mm prime lens and the MC-11 but you scarify a bit of focus speed when switching fast from distance near to far. Hope this helps...

      @@anenbrunoblue2cd395 Thanks, very interesting info. Do you mean the Sony A7RIV with the MC11, the 2X TC, and the canon 300mm f2.8 has as fast AF as the Canon 5D IV has with the same lens and 2X TC ? Better or equal regarding BIF ?

    • @anenbrunoblue2cd395
      @anenbrunoblue2cd395 4 года назад

      Filippos G indeed when using the 300 with 2.0 tc on Sony with mc11, birds in focus stay in focus with very nice results and even better than Canon in some situations. Only, when you suddenly see a bird far away approaching and the lens was focused nearby, it is a bit slower with the 2.0 tc to reach to the focus of that bird. Once in focus, no issues anymore. You have to know that you’re using opticals from Canon and that there is always a conversion. Anyway I’m happy with the result. Without 2.0 tc, all lenses work similar and Sony focus works extremely well. You have a 500 mm. I would first try without a tc using the APS-C Mode which is still 26 megapixel which gives you about 750 mm. Maybe you should try by renting a Sony A7RIV before buying? I speak of my own experience/impression and I don’t have a 500 mm f4.

    I can think of a couple of possibilities for your issue with switching modes when your "buffer" is full.
    To me, it sounds like the camera's cpu is tasked to the maximum performance processing the images to mass storage. Or the internal RAM is maxed out and the OS doesn't have enough to function properly. Or it could be a mixture of the two.
    Fixes could come from a firmware update that limits memory allocation for image processing. Reserving more processing power along with system RAM for OS functionality.
    Also I imagine you're shooting in JPEG and RAW to get the best possible image and preview of said image. Try shooting just in RAW for professional work with no previews. Or just in JPEG to retain the preview but limit your ability in post processing.

  • @turanturanturan
    @turanturanturan 4 года назад +1

    Congrats on the new camera! Btw I was wondering is there a reason for not taking photos in compressed raw? I've always used uncompressed but I was wondering would it be better to use compressed for saving disk space. Does it affect image quality? I have a7iii if that makes any difference.

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  4 года назад

      Uncompressed means there's no compression done to the image and therefore no information is lost. For editing purposes, you should be able to push an uncompressed image a little further than compressed. For most uses, you won't see a huge difference between the two. But when blown up and cropped, that's when the difference becomes a bit more apparent. From what I've seen, it's not enough for me to be shooting uncompressed 100% of the time. For special trips and certain cases, I may switch to uncompressed. Just to make sure I'm getting the most out of my images. Hope that helps!

    • @StefanoIaniro
      @StefanoIaniro  4 года назад

      Oh and like you said, you save a lot of disk space. Uncompressed is twice the size of compressed. Roughly 120MB compared to 60MB

    • @youuuuuuuuuuutube
      @youuuuuuuuuuutube 4 года назад +1

      Stefano: try compressed, for the shooting you're doing, you're not going to see a pixel of difference, however you'll get faster burst rate and save disk space... and the buffer will clear faster which means you can switch earlier to FF.
      Let me explain: people including myself have been doing a lot of tests, and the conclusion is that the only 2 scenarios where you will see a difference are:
      1) very dark image (black) with very bright (white) vertical lines => if you pixel peep you can see some odd pixels, this is barely visible on the A7iii but already almost invisible on the R3 because of the higher mp, and the R4 has more mp so ...
      2) very dark image that is very underexposed, like -5, once you recover in post, the compressed raw will struggle and bring ugly colors whereas the uncompressed is doing fine.
      You're not doing either 1 or 2, therefore you should use compressed raws. Just try to take some shots with and without and compare them.

    I bought this combination a couple of weeks ago and have struggled to get decent shots of birds in flight. In fact, after over 1000 shots I only have one that is even close to being in focus. There seems to be something odd about the 200-600 with A7R4 as I got a far better hit rate with the 200-600 on an A9 or with the A7R4 coupled to the Sony 100-400. I have actually gone back to using the Canon 7D2 with Canon 100-400Mk2 which I find to be vastly superior despite the much lower pixel count. Great vid. A few comments: First which tripod head are you using? I have the same combination. Second I have the feeling this lens only gets about 90% out of the camera a specially while photographing small birds. It has to do in my mind, with the amount of light shutter speed and has to do with sharpness. As much as everyone is trying to love this combination(maybe because of the expenses...) I get much more satisfaction from portraits shooting this camera. The camera amazing sensor shows the high noise and focus softness with too many images. If you manage to stay below 400 iso you can get away with it, but this is almost impossible. I desperately was looking for someone to give me an aha moment about some secret but I think there is none. I also hope Sony will be able to come up with a better lens for the 400-600 range...the lens size does not justify the result for me.

      Thanks so much! I'm using the Manfrotto Dual 290 tripod/head that came with the kit. It's not great, I'm actually looking to upgrade this year when I get a chance to try some new tripods! When it comes to the lens, I think there's those sharpness issues mostly when paired with the a7RIV. I've heard far less complaints about this lens with other bodies. In my case, I get great results with the a7RIV/200-600. But there are a couple of things that I had to change: first, I use IS mode 2. Mode 1 was very inconsistent for me and produced a lot of soft images. I use Mode 2 for everything, and it has really helped produce sharp images. Secondly, I turn OIS off on the lens. This is one of the reasons people are getting soft images. I only turn it on when I'm doing very slow shutter speeds (below 1/250th). Not sure if you've tried these 2 things yet, but give them a shot! Hope that helps.

    Good observations, the inability to switch back to FF when the buffer is clearing is clearly a software issue. I think it's just bad (too quickly written) code, like they're using a variable to keep track of the FF/APS-C mode and reuse that variable when it's saving the files, so that's why you can't switch to FF when it's saving the files, they would need to use 2 variables (still a hack and that's probably how they'll fix it) or better: remember for each shot if they were shot in FF or APS-C mode.
    Completely agree about the menus, and honestly, people complaining about the menus are either beginners/amateurs, in which case it's ok to complain, or pros who don't know how to customize a camera or who never shot with it.

      I wonder if it is a coding issue if they'll ever update it on a firmware update. It happens on my a7iii, as well. So I'm guessing all their camera models do the same thing.
      Yeah and there's also a tab in the menu where you can customize and add any setting you want for quick access. So I think the combo of that and the custom function buttons are a good workaround to navigating through the menus.
