One of the best Slap Bass tutorials I've seen. You broke down what you're actually doing so we all can see exactly what you're doing. You're an awesome teacher; you definitely have the gift of teaching. I learned a lot, thank you.
Cool video man!! It's nighttime here and I don't wanna wake anybody up, but I'll watch this again as soon as the sun has risen and slap my bass. Thanks!
Thanks for breaking it down so that even I have a chance to sound like a slap master. I'm struggling with when to throw in those ghost note plucks, but I'll keep working it. Thanks, you're a great teacher!
First time watching. Very good lesson for me, Thank you very much. I was playing bass off and on for 10 years and I alway wanted to be able to play a groove like you did. I have the thumb speed but no groove, Im going the play it over and over until i get it. You explained it very well so i could understand. Thanks again
Awesome lesson Jermaine! I like how you used a 4 string with fret markers. Also that you dumbed it down occasionally for the beginners. You explained groove very well and the breakdown of slap and pick. Looking forward to future lessons
Hey man, very easy to follow!! I could slap I was just struggling with timing the plucks and I would do 8ths to often but this lesson helped me I need to space them out more. Thank man!
I've had a Squier Vintage Modified J Bass for years. Can't say enough good about it. Get frequent compliments on the sound. Never felt any need to "move up."
wow! Jermaine u ar just amazing, learnt alot from this video, wish u make more of this.. and can you make a video for ghostnotes applications to a groove
I've noticed a couple gospel bassists using the Squier Jaguar bass. Why do you have one? They are inexpensive compared to your other basses. Which model do you have? Thanks
Hey man I'm a drummer but a above average bass player but my slap game is wack,, Jermaine I've watched a lot of U Tube vid's and still struggling. Thanks for the tutorials your a gift to players like me struggling i will be signing up for your course, I've checked out Daric Bennett vids he's cool but you actually get it,, thanks man!!!
I'm in Atlanta where everybody's doing music, I've actually been doing good staying in the pocket while recording on different projects since the producer I work with doesn't have any live Instruments so I picked up the bass and I'm eagerly wanting to get better it's like a drug now so I guess I'm drawn to the bass because of my timing playing drums. I hope you have a Gig in the ATL. I'll come watch,, I used to hang out at the Apache cafe, and Catfish station singing a lot Thanks again !!!!
Im in a rock band and thought why not learn slap and open my horizons bc we want to do a lil funk and stuff and this video helped alot. Thanks brother!
Really good video, and excellent lesson! You did a fantastic job of breaking it down note by note! I do have one question, though. If, with the triplets, you are doing a subdivision syncopation of the octaves with the upbeat of 2 (two-pop-and-) and upbeat of 4 (four-pop-and-), don't you need to add one more slap so that you're playing the triplet after the note of the octave and finishing all three slaps before the next note of the ascending scale? This effectively makes five consecutive notes instead of four, one before the triplet (the pluck) and one after the triplet (fourth note of the scale). So instead of "tri-puh-let UH," as though the octave (pluck) starts on "and", it actually starts on the subdivision immediately prior to "and", giving it that funky syncopation, more like "pop-tri-puh-let-UH. UH UH". If the octave is the first note of the triplet, and if the octave remains one subdivision before "and", then a triplet starting on the octave isn't long enough to connect to the next note of the scale in the groove. At least that's how you play it throughout the video, but then when you get to the triplets it seems you almost shift the first note of the triplet (the octave) to line up with "and" of 2 and 4, making only four consecutive notes (when there should be five), thereby removing the syncopation. But perhaps I misunderstood your instruction and I am mistaken. Please let me know! They both have very different sounds and I am interested to know which one you mean.
Hi Jermaine, I am one of your silent followers. Nice lesson though. You got my attention when you played a double stop @16:13 to 16:16 I love playing double stops for Intros and in little pockets. Can you, in your spare time, lol, do a video on that? Thanks in advance
Work on your attack man! How much pressure your applying to the strings on your fretboard, as well as how you hard or soft you hit the strings when your thumpin n' pluckin or muting. Work on that approach and you will make any bass sound good. Don't dismiss the other advice you receive :) Happy slappin'
So, I leave almost all of my guitars a full step down in D. I think it adds a different sonic character to feel of scales and chords plus, you get that thicker fuller sound ... I will almost never be missing that extra fret of high octave tone, but would totally miss the half or full-step down tones! :)

Fantastic lesson. You demystified some concepts for me. Can’t wait to practice. Thank you!!!
Thanks for breaking it down so that even I have a chance to sound like a slap master. I'm struggling with when to throw in those ghost note plucks, but I'll keep working it. Thanks, you're a great teacher!

Wow, now I finally get how to slap, cause my problem was always lacks of grooves. Thanks man.
great lesson. i went up like 5 levels. thanks man, keep it up
Nice groove
Very nice Squire Bass. I had my eyes on a Spector, but seeing and hearing the Squire, I'm having second thoughts.
Honestly, some of these cheaper basses are really not bad. Especially for recording purposes but even live.
I've had a Squier Vintage Modified J Bass for years. Can't say enough good about it. Get frequent compliments on the sound. Never felt any need to "move up."
thank you sir, great lesson!

No problem!
Nice! You made some of the things I was trying to do understood. keep doing what you do.
Awesome! Will do
I am excited about improving my slap bass. Thanks for the lessons!!!!!
My pleasure!!
thank you
I think a good point add is that if you can play less and groove well, you are on the right track, pun unintended.
wow! Jermaine u ar just amazing, learnt alot from this video, wish u make more of this..
and can you make a video for ghostnotes applications to a groove
Great video
You're groovin' extra hard :)
I've noticed a couple gospel bassists using the Squier Jaguar bass. Why do you have one? They are inexpensive compared to your other basses. Which model do you have? Thanks
that's sick thanks bro...

thank you for the lesson , i got that same bass with 5 strings , it's great
Thanks! Nice.
Freaking groovy bro!
Really cool video Jermaine!
Is it a squier vintage modified jaguar bass, with not a ss scale, right?
Really good video, and excellent lesson! You did a fantastic job of breaking it down note by note!

I don’t own a bass yet..(old guitar guy) Your vid here will be one of the first I work on.
Ty sir
I thinks slap sounds better slowly. It allows space in-between the notes. Sometimes, less is more.
Hi Jermaine,
I am one of your silent followers. Nice lesson though. You got my attention when you played a double stop @16:13 to 16:16
I love playing double stops for Intros and in little pockets. Can you, in your spare time, lol, do a video on that?

Thanks Please be sure to check out my lesson " that churchy bass lick"...
Hi JM, would like to ask what strings are you using and whats your recording signal like? Thanks.

ruclips.net/video/D306C6dvG6c/видео.htmlm37s
Wow man this was so helpful brother
Thanks
sound like you playing bass groove from Jeffery Osbourne's stay with me tonight~
what was that you had on your bass to muffle the string noise where did you get it
It's called a fret wrap by gruv gear.
What song is that at the beginning?
Lots of ghost notes will help also
thanks for the info
my pleasure!
Do you use a compressor when you switch from finger style playing to slap?
John Lyle generally I don't
amazing bro
Thanks Imam
hey man what do you use to record your lessons?
is that squire Jaguar
is it better than squire vintage modified jazz
Kool video, new sub
Same
can you possibly provide me with the progression chord for Be Ready by Melvin Williiams
What strings and gauge did you use on these? I hv the same bass
I use SIT Powerwound extra light strings.
Thanks Jermaine for replying!
Jermaine você possui algum material seu de estudos, tipo apostilas ou DVDs???
Somente os cursos que estão em meus Web site. Eu posso fazer os cursos disponíveis em DVD. Ainda não tenho certeza.
Can you break the kick down at the end? That was AWESOME!!!!!!
I mean lick!!!!
Thanks.. I'll look into that
so you tune a half step down Eb or D#?
ruclips.net/video/D306C6dvG6c/видео.htmlm37s
what you play in the end it is the best way....pasagge....with funky fingers....very,very nice...uuufff
Thanks. Please check out my latest video "that churchy bass lick" I actually break that lick down.
How do you slap with your thumb and avoid hitting the other strings?
It's simply practice
hi. your squier is shor scale?
LuisCa Obando it's a jaguar, most of them are short scale.
long scale (34'') ?
Jermaine. Teach that groove you did at the end of your lesson. Those cords.
Good vid! Do you have Rs210 or 212?
Both in this video.
I need new strings, my bass sounds nothing like that, even when I adjust the EQ on my bass
Yeah fresh strings definitely help.
Work on your attack man!
How much pressure your applying to the strings on your fretboard, as well as how you hard or soft you hit the strings when your thumpin n' pluckin or muting.
Work on that approach and you will make any bass sound good.
Don't dismiss the other advice you receive :)
Happy slappin'
🔥🙌
what is your bass??? Is it squier?? nice tone...
Mohamad Pujiyanto yes that's a squier bass. Thanks
Have you explained why you tune down?
I have. I enjoy having the option of the lower open notes. Especially in Gospel Music.
So, I leave almost all of my guitars a full step down in D. I think it adds a different sonic character to feel of scales and chords plus, you get that thicker fuller sound ... I will almost never be missing that extra fret of high octave tone, but would totally miss the half or full-step down tones! :)
Many, Rock bands tune to Eb. And many bands with older singers require it. That could be the reason he does it.
why do a lesson with a supped up bass
Tuning in Eb should be illegal
Backing track aint free.... :(
? It's definitely free. Not sure what you mean.
Sorry! my bad. I didn't notice that the backing track for this particular lesson is free. Just saw it now and i've placed an order. Thanks! :)
Thank you for going slow.
Make me into Les Claypool!
Really nigga?
