Right back at you, sir! Do you happen to know how can I find more of this kind of sound? I tried Level 42 but the other instruments and singing just distract me from the bass IMHO.
1986-1989, Poland, The Berlin Wall still there, a small casette recorder , bass guitar and hours of playing along, no tabs, no sheet music available, and I succeded! Thank God I had completed my music scholl education as a violinist, that wa a great help. We started our gigs with a live reprise of "Almost There" from the Wembley Live, then we played "Kansas City Milkman", "Eyes Waterfalling", "Lessons in Love"and lots more. I sang as well so I became a local Mark King. At that time in a small town in Poland we were Funk Rock Gods! Many thanks for bringing it back in this clip and many thanks for that great Tribute To Mark King and Level 42, one of the best funk masters in the world!
Damn. This video makes me realize even more how much of a genius Mark King is. I mean, he plays all those amazing lines and he also sings lead over them.
backslash68 That's exactly what I was thinking!! It's so easy to sit back and sort of take it for granted what a singer/performer is doing, until you see it all broken down into its separate parts like this. Just imagine, Mark King is doing all that guitar work and having to concentrate on singing the words to the song too. Amazing, just amazing!
yes people forget that so easily how many rythms there are in those slap bass riffs and that he use the bass as the leadinstrument. I only can sing and play the bass at the same time on Running in the Family, Hot water, and a couple of others and yes that have taked my certainly some years to understand, not before 2015 i started to find my own way to sing at the same time as i played, so i had to play the bassriffs without thinking of it and sing over it and that's damn hard cause he uses so many rythms on the bass and for then singing with a totally another flow in the same 4/4 rythm, it's hard very hard at the same time, so that is what i use most of my practising at the time among other things, to learn to sing to these advansed tuned at the same time while i playing the bass.
Funny, Mark King started out as a drummer from another band. I think the band was called Re Flex. They had a record call Politics & Dancing and I think he played drums on that track.
Even a metal rocker guitar player like me cannot love the bass slap and the Level 42 tracks. I listened to "A Physical presence" 1000 times Mark KIng is a monster!
You prolly dont care but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me!
Love slap and Larry but had to mention that hillbilly double bass players in the pre-electric guitar era used to do a slap technique in 1940s-50s...well before Larry. But he was probably one of the first on the electric bass, yes.
As a long-time Mark King fan (and long-time 'borrower' of his bass licks), I must say, your technique is flawless. However, to truly be as impressive as Mr. King, you have to do it while singing (whew!). Great job!

Just bought myself a Status S2 classic, couldn't resist! ;) I would love to hear you playing on a Rickenbaker or Höfner ... let's see how far you can carry that Mark King feeling!
F. Herumusu i believe Mark King has the string dampener removed- usually hidden under the chrome pickup covers (def not the technical term) which Marcus Miller seems to love.

Very well done! I have been playing bass for over 40 years. Mostly progressive rock as it was the only thing that challenged me. Mark King has given me an entire different look on things. This guy however has not found a style but emulates everybody note for note. I hope nothing but the best for him as he could play with any band!
