So nice that you remembered Mark King! I started to play bass because of him. "Something About You" was always one of my favorite songs and when I ran deep into this song and other ones, I became his fan.
wow man..i'm in the same trip. discovering MArk King has been an inspiration. just buy a Bass from Thomann's 2 months ago and currently giving my baby steps in bass world. Also Julia is a badass
I also wonder why Mark King is forgotten so often. His style is so unique and he uses such increadable groove patterns and tricks - wow. I saw him live in 1982 and after that I sold my Rickenbaker and bought an Alembic Spoiler.

Just discovered this channel and Julia today. Fab! Please some more stuff from Mark King, been a huge Fan (and still am) of Level 42 in the 80's. Cheers from Germany x Ilona
Cool ideas. Ida was also using double finger plucks to get some of the triplets at the end of the clup you played. You also touched on but didn't go into the left hand thump technique that Mark King uss a lot: thumping with middle, ring and pinky while fretting a note with his index finger, like in the main figure of Heathrow. Maybe next time?
Wonderful and patient tuition, Julia - thank you! Can I suggest “Mind up tonight” by Melba Moore as a bass line to consider. I think it’s ‘Ready’ Freddie Washington originally. Very cool bass and a great dance tune!
Hey Julia .. I was watching this one again .. you make it look easy & I thought I might share a few tips I use to compensate / overcome my lack of mobility in all left hand fingers .. I use a delay & a slap back echo set to allow ' me ' time to get set for the next part . Of course if you try this it will not work in every situation But it helps me when I am trying to record & if I use a looper & ( when I get it right ) I can Bounce along as if I am playing way beyond my own personal skills .. Think like the ' Edge ' in U2 .. when he get's in time with himself .. as I say not always practical live but handy for short sections .. Love you all at Thomann .. So much stuff I'd like to buy Direct from you at Big store but with Covid & vat & delays at Borders .. it makes more sense for me to wait for now .. Stay safe & keep on being cool .
Try sliding up from the 7th fret D note on the G String as a 1/16 note pickup on the last sixteenth of the bar before that Run for cover phrase ending lick! Still with the fourth pinky finger and other fingers flat across the neck for muting. 👍🏻
Julia, you should play the ultimate bass song: "The Awakening" by The Reddings. Love your show and I hope you get a good raise for the work you are doing!
There are sooooooo many other mark king licks to explore . Mark , like many great bass players ( Jaco, will lee, charlie drayton, Mark was a drummer first. My favorite album of all time is Level 42's "World Machine". Mark King is a beast.

I am also a guitar player, since about 35 years and I recently bought a bass. My advice : buy a bass and enjoy 👍🏻 Best regards from Belgium
Same here...
@VD Only if they try and play it like a guitar. Its a different instrument
Same. I got a music man stingray "used" for decoration. The bass is going to be put to good use. Thanks Julia.
@E.T I'm a shining example of that, but I'm still working on it. It's much easier to get a gig as a bass player ... if you are good.
43 of Level 42 has the funkiest bass riff ever. When I first heard it in the 80s, I had to hear it like 100 times in a row.

I knew about Level 42, of course, but I didn't know Heathrow and it's fantastic! Thank you!
It's on their Debut album and it's dope.
It’s from their early years of jazz-funk fusion where 2 or 3 out of 8 album tracks were instrumentals…
