Got a bass again about 2 months back after taking a 2 year break. I was never good at slap but I am getting the feel for it now, this vid will definetly help me get a few new phrases into my playing, thanks!
Ins and outs of the RUclips algorithm video? Content decisions? A little behind the scenes with the brain trust of SBL? Sign me up! ..and keep the old school content coming!
I was really sad to learn that you have covid, I hope that you will have a full recovery, without any long term complications! Best wishes from Greece !!!!
Love these short lessons! It's stuff I have been able to immediately work into my playing. And I'd love the video, podcast, whatever on how the RUclips algorithm works
Another great video. If you find that there's an audience for it, could you please discuss the "Pressure Roll" fretting technique (thumping the E or A string followed by pluck to hammer-on two strings down)? I'm having a difficult time fully understanding how to execute it.
Thank you for this walkthrough @3:56. I literally just picked up the bass 60 seconds ago and did it for the first time...albeit a little sloppily, and it for me it was like the first time I learned two handed tapping as a 12 year old kid. I do enjoy learning new things and I thank you for this lesson!
Hey Scott, I am so grateful that you are feeling and looking so much better. I’m very sorry that you have experienced your current bout with Covid. It is an evil affliction. Your perseverance in uploading the last seven days of such excellent bass education content is a testament to your character and love of sharing knowledge of the awesome instrument that connects us. By the way, your new bass is sweet. I am still enjoying and grateful for the Bass 101 series that you posted a few weeks back. I’m still working on the second episode, but it’s more progress than I’ve made over the past few years. 😜 I know that sounds pitiful, but being the sole caregiver for my Dad has been draining and your videos are part of my mental health therapy. I’ve been an SBL Life member for a few years and look forward to delving more deeply into the remarkable resources that you continue to provide. Continue to feel better, Mate. Lord Bless you and yours. 😊
I picked up my bass after years of not playing today . Fresh strings , cleaned her up and tuned . The beginners videos are great to get me back in to it . Loving it 🤟 # stiffwrists&fingers 😅😂
With the double finger pluck version you do, looks like you're plucking separate strings D string index G string middle a lot more comfortable and easier than both on the same string
Glad you're feeling better. A slight variation on that double pluck, is doing both plucks on the same string. Possibly even going for THREE fingers on the same string, and maybe try breaking the plucks rhythmically. These techniques can all be seen on the CLASSIC bass instructional video by Alex Sklarevski, called Slap Bass. Useful techniques, but like any, best when not overused, but rather used because that's what fits best for the song.
2:28 I've spent hours studying those exact videos of Victor and Mark. Obviously I don't just get it at first, but eventually I'll pick up the technique, sometimes by coming up with an easier piece with the root notes I recognized, or discovering another piece that uses that technique. Eventually I come back to these videos and I can hear what they're doing like never before, from there it's just a matter of slowing them down and playing along.
Oh no, not the tinnitus shirt!!!! The interface probably couldn't keep up with it. 😜🤣😂 In all seriousness, glad you're feeling better. I like these short format lessons. I, personally, think they serve as better advertisements for the actual course. As these serve to get the concept under your fingers, but for the full breakdown you go to the course. Not that I don't enjoy the player profiles, (my bass collection, etc.) but these (as repetitive as they are for you) focus on playing now. Plus they serve as a possibility to introduce new insight that you may have picked up since the last time you covered a topic or technique. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
The one Ida does seems to me more like a acoustic guitar thing, with more force added to make it more rhythmic while also muting with your fretting hand
A friend of mine is a huge Mark King fan and he taught this to me. Sadly, the Country & Western band I play in doesn't appreciate me thumping triplets over Folsom Prison Blues.
Really happy to hear that you're getting better on the other side of COVID--it's always good to hear stuff like that. I don't think I'm ever going to unsee that orange shirt though...😁
If you really want to learn slap bass from ground up then get a book by Stuart Clayton titled Slap Bass and as a supplement you can buy Hal Leonard Funk Bass book toooo......
yo you just changed my life completely forever :O I srsly can't believe how comparably easy this is!! Next time you're gonna tell me it's super easy to do the double thumb :D
I'm not a massive fan of the shorts...I know that a lot of people don't have the attention span for actual content, but they can go to TikTok for that! With regards to future content, Scott, u r a brilliant teacher, but anything with Ian Martin Allenson gets my like before he even says a word! ....and as an aside, I did the last technique accelerator course, can't believe that the time has come around again! Great course, I've been playing bass for 28 years and found the course helpful so I'm sure there's something there for everyone!
Excellent little tutorial. Appreciated. As for the algorithm, its akin to listening to a focus group of suits telling an artist what to do. Its akin to populism, and its kinda tedious. Focus group committee driven art. What does your heart tell you? Do what you want to do. It might not be a realistic perspective in terms of money but I'd rather, personally, that the art came first.
RUclips Shorts really show the holes in the algorithm. If I don't hit pause before I try to select "Don't show", it thinks I like that video and before I know it I'm buried in US politics, Ukraine, and stupid "challenges". The plus side is I get annoyed and go do something useful with my time! 😀
Thanks Scott, I was really wondering how they do this fast slap I would be very interested if you make that video to explain how the youtube algorithm makes you do certain videos
Of course it's not very useful outside of funk. It's a technique for playing funk music. Or so you might think or hear people say. But I used to know a phenomenal bass player, one of the best I've ever heard, really, and he would slap out these intricate death metal riffs and it sounded awesome. It was his own music, may not work well with playing covers, but if you are writing your own stuff you are only limited by how creative you are.
Don’t play bass yet but I’m a lefty playing right handed guitar bc strumming felt more natural with my right but slapping and normal two finger stuff feels more natural on my left just doing it against my arm... I don’t know what to do lol
Hey everybody, when I play slap solos I most of get stuck on the root notes are there any exercise that can help me getting more around on the fretboard? thanks for reading.
Hammer on is the hardest way to get this effect. Much easier to do a double thumb on the lower string. Using hammer on gives a high risk in getting overtones und is a lot of work to mute. So: keep it easy…
My audio interface was also completely non-functioning for about a week one year ago due to Covid Laryngitis. 🥴 Get better Scott! 👍 (is there no slapp emoji yet? 😅)
I'm on a bit of a crusade to let people know that slap bass is a rockabilly technique on upright bass invented long before funk. Here we're talking about thumpin and poppin. I try but I know it's futile altho accurate. It's just 2 e.z. to say "slap". Lol
I’ve been enjoying this. Slap is one of those things that just boggle my mind but I keep practicing.
Got a bass again about 2 months back after taking a 2 year break. I was never good at slap but I am getting the feel for it now, this vid will definetly help me get a few new phrases into my playing, thanks!
Great lesson Scott, get well soon and full recovery!!!

Glad you're feeling better. This video is incredibly helpful. Great content overall.
I was growing up watching and listening Carles Benavent and Pepe Bao, its will be really interesting for me watching you reacting them.

These short length single subject mini lessons are GREAT!!!
Your old school videos are the best. Those 4/5 years old videos about music harmony are hard to beat 🤙🏽 this channel is so different now
Glad you are feeling better 😊 Great lesson and have good day!!!
Ive been played bass on and over for the last 20 years. And im still and an evolving student

Great lesson and thanks for the tips! Hope you get well soon!
With the double finger pluck version you do, looks like you're plucking separate strings
D string index
G string middle
a lot more comfortable and easier than both on the same string
True, it's easier on different strings but the sound is completely different and it's probably best to know both ways around
Glad you're feeling better Scott!!
Glad you are feeling better Brother ❤️🙏
Glad you are on the mend Scott. Thanks again
The bit at the end about algorithms was deep and very interesting.
Would love to see a video about the goings on behing the SBL's channel. Thanks!
Thank you for the lesson!!! I need to get back to playing bass and learning new techniques. You are awesome.. thank you sir!!!
Thanks for checking out the video dude!

I work with a kid that's a drummer. He said the Bass can be the Groove setter and Percussive at the same time. :)
Thank You Scott!
Very Helpful Pieces..

Im so happy that you are doing better from Covid. Be careful brother Scott
Glad you're feeling better. Def interested in the YT algorithm info.
The best teacher online. Thank you!
Glad you're on the mend. Always great videos
You and Ian doing a podcast on the algorithm would be amazing.
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks. Love the shirt

Your lessons are phenomenal
Awesome lesson as usual! I wish I could afford the accelerator class it would be an amazing opportunity for sure!
You are Amazing! Glad you are feeling better!
Glad you're on the mend!
I'll be darned. Suddenly, I can do this. Thanks a lot, Scott.
Glad your feeling better, they used to call that having a cold in my day 🤣🤣🤣

I enjoy slap bass so much
Oh wow! I needed to see this video today. Thank you so much. Valuable ❤
Glad you enjoyed the vid man! Thanks for checking it out 👊🏻🧡
Very inspiring!! Good going man! 🥳

Love your stuff. What kind of glove is that? Just restarted playing bass. Fingers are bleeding😊
It's debatable how useful slapping really is, outside of funk, but damn it's good fun to do.

still loving the shirt. Were you to have a superhero outfit, itd be you in that shirt with that orange beanie, giving solid bass lessons to the world
This reminds me of the stuff flea was doing in the mid and late 80’s
This is super cool and helpful!!! Thank you!
Don’t play bass yet but I’m a lefty playing right handed guitar bc strumming felt more natural with my right but slapping and normal two finger stuff feels more natural on my left just doing it against my arm... I don’t know what to do lol

Scott, SBL and FBA member here. Loving it and have seen much progress. Question: What strings be those you got on there?
Hey everybody, when I play slap solos I most of get stuck on the root notes are there any exercise that can help me getting more around on the fretboard? thanks for reading.
Glad you are better. Get well soon
Karel Honasan. You should check him out. He plays F Bass too.
Cheers from the Philippines!

Good job Bro... Im gonna learn it!
Great lesson! Ida is definitely a bass player I need to listen to more.
Scott, why do you wear the glove on your fret hand?
Sbl lesson with mark maybe?how cool is that?;))
My audio interface was also completely non-functioning for about a week one year ago due to Covid Laryngitis. 🥴 Get better Scott! 👍 (is there no slapp emoji yet? 😅)
Is that shirt 110 or 220 volt?
You make the same face that I do whenever I listen to Jazz. 😂
I love this vid
Love the shirt!! Dr. Lecture would love it. Lol

I invented a new slap technique using the bone of my thumb like a drum stick to create sixteenth notes I call it quadruple thumbing
Yaaaay Scott is better
03:37 starts
This is great, check out Reggie Wootens slap video, he has a really good grasp of this.
coupon please :)

Scott: For some strange reason, your shirt reminds me of Vitamin C! Glad you're feeling better.
the PCR test doesn't work. So how could you be tested? but if you took the jabs?
If you wanna learn to slap, Scott AIN"T the one to teach you.
Tikitetaktikitetak..what the heck was that? Exactly what I said ha~
👍
So who is the woman in the thumbnail. 😊
