As a GH5 -> S5ii convert, I had the 12-35 2.8 and 35-100 2.8 lenses form Pana, and have replaced those for the S5ii for the equivalent sigma 24-70 f2.8 and S Pro 70-200 f4. I consider the f4 tele-zoom the equivalent (or even better) due to the depth of field conversion between MFT and FF, giving me even at f4, a whole stop better separation (I care less abt the low light as the S5ii has insane ISO performance). I can honestly say that for similar MP sensors on GH5 and S5ii, the full frame glass is giving me much much sharper and overall better pictures as far as colour as well. All this to answer the question of “which would I take for travel” and my answer is the full frame setup, it’s just so much better in my experience.

24-105 is pretty decent too. And you get the synchronous dual image stabilization.

    • @marinrealestatephotography
      @marinrealestatephotography Год назад

Yes, it is a pretty good lens and the dual image stabilization is really nice. To me it's a bit of a shame that the lens barrel extends so much when zooming (makes it more difficult to use on a gimbal), and if shooting 60p, with an aps-c crop, it is now a 35mm field of view. Also, on the S1 and original S5 series, the autofocus is pretty bad. My understanding is that the primes and the 20-60 might have better AF on the S1 and original S5 series. Don't know if there is much difference on the S5 II / IIX though.

This lens is good, however its major problem is the price.
I can buy the 24mm, the 35mm and the 50mm Lumix S Primes at f/1.8 for LESS than the cost of the 24-70mm f/2.8
And for around 2-300 Euro (depending on sales) I can add the traditional for portraits 85mm f/1.8 Lumix S
You also have the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 for half the price (even if it is not as good in video)
To get the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f/2.8 you have to
    1) Value the lens clears Leica Standards (that might be enough of a reason for you to buy it)
    2) Be OK with the weight
    3) Be OK with the size (I do not think a lot of people will use it for street photography)
    4) Be OK with f/2.8
    5) Be OK with the fact that you can buy 3 - 4 Panasonic Primes for the cost of one lens
Or you can look at investing in amazing glass and getting Leica results for half the price.
Me personally - as I need a second camera I will be spending money on the S5 IIX with the 50mm f/1.8
I already have the kit lens and the 35mm f/1.8 and as I want to develop my RUclips channel and want to take Night Club photos - the compactness and the f/1.8 of the primes suits me more.

I've been a stills shooter for years with MFT, but recently bought an S5 with the Sigma 24-70/2.8 DG DN. I love the S5, but it reinforces my contention that MFT kit will definitely be lighter and smaller than full frame no matter how small the camera gets because of the lenses. Mirrorless lenses are a bit smaller than old DSLR lenses, but not by that much. My G9 is about the same size as the S5, but tack on a lens and it's a whole different experience. BTW, the Sigma is also an outstanding lens. Thanks for the great review.

I currently have the 20-60mm on my S1 as the standard walkabout lens. It's quite decent but not spectacular. I like spectacular. I also have some Canon EF L lenses adapted for L mount. Debating right now if I should get the Pana 24-70. One drawback I see is the lacks of OIS. I know there's IBS but OIS + IBS together is much better than one or the other. Also L-rumors has a teaser out about a possible new 28(?)-70 on Panasonic's roadmap.

I think people will be deciding between this and the Sigma version. I sold the Sigma 24-70 for the Lumix version because of the much better build quality and focus clutch. The Sigma has a nice image but can be a pain to handle for video shooting. The Lumix 24-70 is a dream for video.

Thanks for the review, Shane. While in a normal world, 24mm is plenty wide enough. But if you are going to shoot 4K at 50p / 60p (with the resulting aps-c crop), I think I would really want the slightly wider FOV of the 20-60mm. I was shooting a commercial in a small store with the Panasonic 24-105mm f/4 and the FOV was just too narrow :( Mark in Marin County

@@YanFries That would be sweet, but I would absolutely want lens stabilization on it. I've seen enough vidoes of the the current 20-60 when people are flogging to be concerned about the corner warping. that's one of the reasons why I am still holding on to my Canon EF 16-35 f/4 L, since it has pretty darn good lens stabilization, and when combined with the S5 / S1, avoids a lot of the corner warping at wide angles.

Hi Shaun, thanks for the kind words. Overall, this lens is great but I'm not sure it's better than their prime lenses. The primes are small, fast, and light as well so it might be a deciding factor. If you are happy with F2.8, then this is a great choice as it will no doubt be cheaper than buying all of the other primes in this range.

We've had this lens for some years now. The overall quality is indeed amazing.
HOWEVER: for filmmaking, you should be aware that manual focusing is not smooth. You will be seeing "stepping". which is very noticeable on the longer side of the focal length. It will render the footage unusable.
This is a huge bummer. Panasonic praises the stepless motors inside this lens but they could not manage to assure that manual focusing stays smooth as well.
We've found a workaround that seems to reduce the issue a little bit: instead of pulling the focus clutch to manual, we leave it on autofocus and switch to manual on our camera.

I have/had all these lenses. You can search on the web, the optical formula of the Leica 24-70mm is exactly the same than the 24-70mm DG DN, this is the exact same lens rebadged by Leica.
However you can be sure the Leica version has better quality control and you will likely get better sharpness, better coating and better build quality than the Sigma (my sample of the Sigma was slightly less sharp and it was full of dust after some months ...).
And this is just my opinion but the 24-70mm S Pro and the 24-90mm have nicer output in my opinion, something about the contrast in the shadows in incredible.
But yes, the S Pro is a much better value. Some people prefer the f2.8 throughout the zoom, some people prefer the reach. I kept the 24-70mm S Pro because I prefer the fast aperture over the reach and also because of the price, but both are great (even if my sample of the S Pro 24-70mm is slightly sharper than my 24-90mm was).
The only difference, other than reach/aperture, are the colors, the Leica 24-90mm has nicer colors in my opinion, but it doesn't justify the much higher price of the Leica.
And I agree, the 24-70mm is the best 24-70mm you can get, even the 24-70mm GM II is not as good.

These lenses have come down in price about 20% or so in some regions. This is their best lens and it's less expensive than the new G Master 24-70 :) (it's still pricey!)

Actually it wasn’t more expensive then the cameras. It‘s a S Pro designed für S1 &S1R. Small size was not really a target. All S Pro fit perfect to S1/S1R in regards handling. S1/S1R we’re much more expensive then the S5 range
