Many thanks for your detailed review!
I own the original S5 and recently bought a Lumix S5 II and S5 IIx. Unfortunately I had to return both units, because they had exactly the same audio issue:
If you connect an external microphone via the jack audio input, there is a high frequency pulsating sound that doubles its frequency when you switch the frame rate from 25p to 50p. This annoying sound can only be heard very quietly, but it is disturbing in quiet passages during interviews, for example. And yes, it does not go away as soon as you hit record.
This is a step by step guide to reproduce the problem:
    1. Set the camera to movie mode in a quiet room
    2. Connect an external microphone to the Mic-Port (if it is a battery powered device, you can leave it switched off)
    3. In the audio menu, set the „Sound Rec Gain Level“ to „Low“ (in „Standard“ the issue is less pronounced)
    4. Set the Audio Level to Zero or + dB to emphasize the issue
    5. Put your low impedance headphones on (e.g. EarPods) and note a pulsing high pitched interference sound
    6. Press the lens lock/unlock button to make the sound disappear for some seconds
    7. Toggle the Movie Recording Options from 25p to 50p to double the speed of the pulsing sound
    8. Switch the dial “Movie Mode“ to Manual "M“ to hear the sound change it’s frequency
Please note: This interference do not occur using the onboard mics or the DMW-XLR1 unit.

I have the s pro 24-70 sitting on my desk right now just waiting for my S5iix so I can actually use it lol. I was going to go with just the primes but when the price dropped $500 it was enough of a discount to justify it. As a narrative filmmaker that lens is perfect (aside from the weight and size). Manual focus clutch, par focal, no focus breathing and easily reframe when filming 60p without swapping lenses. One thing that is never really talked about is when you see that Roger Deakins likes a 28mm or Spielberg sees the world in 21mm they are talking about super 35 which is a 1.44x crop compared to the S5. So the s prime 35 turns into 24mm and the S prime 24 turns into 16.5mm. I love that I can actually set the 24-70 to 30mm and know I have the field of view of 21mm on a cinema camera. This lens lets you film an entire feature film without ever having to change the lens. It is essentially a cine lens.

Wow. I'm impressed about how the market is blooming after the pandemics and chip shortage. From mid 2022 to (i suppose) end of 2024 the camera market has been and will be crazy. It started with Fuji XH2 and XH2S, and doesn't seem to stop. Nikon Z8, Panasonic S5IIX and S5II, Canon cheapo entry level R50, R10 and R8, etc. And we wait for next Nikon cameras, Panasonic new S1 lineup (i think will be incredible cameras), Canon R5 replacement, etc. For me it's even more difficult to decide for one system 😅😅😅😅😅. thx for the helpful and breezy review.
dang, was considering getting a sony fx30 but the panny s5iix seems to do everything better except AF, which i never use.
yurr, av owned the sony a73 and now the fx3. jus the 24-70mm gmaster v1 for a lens.
    i used to own x2 panny g85's and x1 gx85.
loved using those for walking around stuff and mounting to the inside of a car window w a ram suction mount.
great ibis, affordable lenses, but mft lowlight is rough.
seems like brandwise, sony and panny are kings in the $2-4kish mirrorless range.
w sony specializing in beast lowlight performance and a great selection of 1st/3rd party lenses that arent too out of reach.
panasonic seems to specialize in good ibis, 2nd-best lowlight at this pricepoint for mirrorless, better menus, more weatherproof type features/funner to shoot with.
my only gripes w the panny cameras are the skintones look too red/yellow, and the lens selection is, as u said, pricey & limited.
id probs save a couple bucks re-using my sony npfz100 batteries from my fx3/a73, and the possibility of swapping lenses if theyre full frame.
that bein said, for a walkaround or car window mounted camera, the s5iix seems superior bcoz of the ibis. (fx30 ibis and lowlight perhaps lesser bcoz 6k oversampling and not fullframe)
and the price seems fair for a feature rich camera. but idk, hesistant, long term, idk about panny lineup of lenses. leica be pricey.
plus i like getting goofy samyang dumblenses and not usin AF anyway.
but yeh both brands are great in this price range. and def the gx85 was my fave camera. so fun as a travel camera.
but the fx3 feels pro, w the recording time, fan, beefy workhorse vibes. caged w a 98wh battery + atomos, its a pretty solid indie film reliable little camera.
zcam seems interesting too but seems plagued by a thousand little issues, and reliability is king in filmmaking.
crazy how far cameras have come in the past 10 yrs. movin beyond the canon t5i fosho😂

People complain about the 1.5x crop on the S2II & S2IIX, but forget that all other cameras in that price range have either a crop or quality just goes down to 1080p at 60fps+. I’ll take a 1.5x crop because it’s just like shooting from a APS-C camera that comes with a crop. The big thing for me is how it doesn’t overheat and the IBIS is probably the best one out there. The low light performance is also a deal breaker. Canon can’t compete with this unless you get a lens for low light shots. You can get a little better results with Sony but you have to step it up and spend way more for an FX30 😐

Looks like its still there. If you want the most out of this sensor, externally record BRAW. The BRAW out of this camera seems to work like native Black Magic cameras. You get highlight recovery, white balance control, and accurate exposure compensation. Seems like that S52 ( with paid firmware update) or S52x and a Blackmagic assist is the best "cheap" large format cinema camera available period.
Highlight recovery gave Gerald Undone almost an extra stop in the highlights.... that puts your dynamic range up in Red category.

V-Log on the S5II was great but too noisy in low light when using 6K and cropping. It is why I sold the S5II, the S1 has better details rendering and 0 noise reduction with the regular profiles.

@@jessecumberledge4530 Yes but I mostly do run and gun so I don't want to record externally, the S1 and S5 don't have noise reduction and oversharpening with the 709 profiles, but they still have good dynamic range.
However the AF on these cameras is nowhere as good as the S5II ...
I tried the Canon R6II recently, I like the colors, the IBIS is good, the AF is great and the 4K60fps has no crop but the details rendering is just slightly better than the S5II with 709 profiles, really not as good as the S1.
It seems most brands are trying to mimic Sony ugly rendering when using 709 profiles now (with oversharpening and noise reduction).
Even with my M43 cameras (G9 and GH6) I never seen such bad rendering with the 709 profiles, very disappointing from Panasonic because they always had the best image quality whatever the profiles I've used. Now they try to catch smartphone users with oversharpening and NR everywhere with most profiles.

However somewhere down the line you get the need to shoot higher quality video, all-I, raw, what ever you will need to purchase and upgrade to the S5ii that’s almost the exact same price as the S5iix but still miss out on some of the feature set that’s present in the S5iix. Reality is as you become more professional you likely will shift to proper video cameras like a C70, fx6 or Komodo. Great thing about the S5iix is it makes a brilliant b cam to those cameras with codecs and quality options to match it.
Just buy the S5iix, it’s still cheaper than the majority of its competitors and offers more, while having massive growth potential.

I need your help. I recently sold my sony a7iv and bought panasonic s5ii and sigma 24-70. I noticed that when changing the aperture, no matter in what mode, there are sharp jumps on the screen and on the video. It's like when you change the aperture for a split second, a huge black vignette appears around the edges, it's very noticeable.
On Sony, this is not the case, and when changing the aperture from one extreme value to another, only the blurring of the background changes, and the exposure changes smoothly and imperceptibly. I'm trying to figure out if this is a lens problem or a feature of Panasonic cameras.

Have you experienced a little delay between hitting record and the recording actually starting? On the screen the delay translates into a little stutter/jump but it isn't in the actual footage as it seems to happen when the timer/recording actually starts. It happens in mov and prores but doesn't seem to be an issue in MP4. S5iix on the latest fw with 2 64g prograde v90ii 250mb cards. Any input would be great!

Great review. Yes, the contrast only AF in 60p is a bummer. But, for me, I hardly shoot any slow motion. I know a lot of people complain about such limitations. But, how often to they really shoot that way?
I saw someone post in a Facebook group for the ZV-E1 complaining that his camera overheated after 24 minutes filming in 60fps. I asked him what he was filming. He said he was filming himself working on his car engine. I asked him why he needed to film in 60fps for that, his reply was, "Cuz, I wanted to." I would be curious as to who would be interested in watching someone work on their car for 24 minutes in slow motion.

Tons of situations where 60 is needed. Normally it would be shorter burst, but not always. If you don't need it for your normal workflow then its not a issue, but for some it is 100% a deal breaker.

      @GeekyNerdyTechy  Год назад +4

60p looks great and a lot of people prefer the smoother look and it also allows you to selectively slow it down in post on a 30p timeline. The camera has AF in 4K 60, but with a crop. If you're filming sport or events 60p is usually better for streaming at higher quality.

The USB-C recording functionality is pretty cool. That said, it requires a specific setup/cage to get it all connected and portable. The feature is great, but I would rather keep the rig smaller when doing any sort of travel. 2 x 256gb cards is usually enough and you can also backup the recording on the fly which is what you can't do with the SSD.

Active cooling is SUCH a cheap addition for them to add they should really add it to any camera that has potential to overheat. Instead, manufacturers selectively include it to differentiate models and for marketing etc etc. it’s a situation where the market has failed. Look at the ZV-E1 as a perfect example. $3k body that didn’t have the budget for active cooling? You have to cough up extra $3k for the FX3 😂😂😂
