Lumix s series are the most under rated cameras on the market. I was a diehard Nikon fan until I discovered Lumix and got an S1 for versatility with video and stills. Now that they updated the capabilities of the S1 recently with the new software updates, it’s a beast! Especially with anamorphic and 5.9k video with full vlog. I've been heavily considering the S5IIX to finally upgrade from the Nikon D3500 that got me into the industry 6 years ago. I have the Nikon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 and 70-300 f/4.5-6.3 kit lenses. I'm primarily a creative photographer focusing on nature and dynamic lighting, both day and night shots. However, I also take a handful of portraits regularly, so I've been conflicted as to what lenses I should try juicing out of my budget.
My initial plan was to go for the 24-105 f/4 for an all-rounder, add the 50 f/1.8 for portraits and long exposure, and later in the future add the 70-200 and a teleconverter. Having watched this, my only concern is the f/4 in long exposure and low light…maybe I'd be more justified if I added a 35 f/1.8? Man, it's hard to have a budget in this industry. 😅😂 Thanks for the informative video and comparison!

I've bought the 24-70mm and I am really blown away by the quality! It became my main workhorse and it delivers great images. I have one annoying issue though: when I focus manually, I can see "stepping". The focus area jumps in little steps and that does not look too good. It's more noticeable whit close ups. When I use the area focusing by taping on the screen however, the focus transition is smooth.
Do I miss a setting in the menu to get smooth manual focusing?

LUISA BAKES I have the same set up, personally I’m going with a S5 as a C cam... (if they ever ship it to me 😢)
The footage coming out of the S1H looks more film like mostly because of that AA filter. The S1 and the S5 have the same sensor so they will basically be giving you the same look.
For B and C cams I find this to be fine, I personally feel like the extra $2000 could be better spent if you already have a S1H.
Personally one of the nicest things about that AA filter is the softness it gives peoples faces. Super sharp sensors are great for picture and video but most people don’t want to see al of there pours.
I would get the S5 and perhaps looking into some black mist filters which add a softness to footage. It will save you a lot of money and give you a cool artistic edge in my opinion.

For portraits, it is every bit as good as the Lumix. Great vid. Considering moving from a GH5 to a FF lumix. Question. I shoot in a small room and need to knock out the background for talking heads. I've got about 5 feet behind the me/subject and and not a ton of room to move the camera back. • @fatherofbirds

Path Less Pedaled 5ft is pretty tough, I would probably go with the 16-35 F4.
I know F4 doesn’t sound shallow but on full frame it’s like having a F2 on Micro 4/3.
This would allow you to complained zooming in, moving your subject closer to you because you won’t have to back up as far.
Check out my video with the 16-35mm F4. For my talking head part the camera is less then arms length from me. The closeness combined with the F4 and zooming in slightly makes a pretty nice blur of the background.

I used the 24-105 for a bit (two events, some private use) on my new s5II and although i like the dual is, the autofocus and of course the range, i dont like the bokeh, its just a little too busy and rough. I think in when i get a second s5II (or the new high megapixel phase detect camera that should be coming out), i will switch to the 24-70 and also get 70-200.
Right now im using the 70-300 a bunch, and for large events (just did a Marathon) its amazing, lovely images, the bokeh and falloff is perfect.
I also dont like the way the 105 handels falloff, the focus just drops like an anvil, its not all that smooth.
Overall im hoping for a new iteration of the 24-105 with better out of focus performance

As someone trying to move deeper into the video industry... Would you say it's worthwhile to pick up an S1 + 24-105 as an all rounder kit, and slowly buy more to add to my bag?
Or should I get the GH5/G9? The price difference means I can almost buy a full lens kit if I go M43. However, my main gripe is dynamic range and low light.
I don't get to use big lights as I do run&gun solo. I like to shoot landscapes/travel as a hobby, but for work I'm doing mostly interviews, events, behind-the-scenes, gym/workout shots.
