Thanks a lot for the tests. Hard to find sigma on Panasonic videos on RUclips. Have to say Panasonic’s are really manual focus for video cameras. The DFD’s problem is (a) it has to overshoot when it changes focus distance hence the pulsing just before it locks on you, (b) it just randomly pulses even when you stay in place, and (c) it is much slower than PDAF. Even with Panasonic lens, the first 2 problems just creates a moment of unpleasantness in the footage.

@@DustinArmstrongPro I’m struggling to decide between Panasonic 24-70 and sigma, but sigma one is cheaper and also quite good! Just wonder I do a lot of video to see which would be better,
Everybody talks about DN version of sigma. But nobody mentions OS version. On paper it's the same lens, but with optical stabilization. Is it better or worse?
There's no l mount version that's OS currently besides the 100-400mm and even that one is coming soon. I don't know how the OS works with adapted lenses so honestly I'm not sure

I don't believe the Sigma is parfocal. I think it's near parfocal, but not perfectly. Couldn't tell you on the Sigma. Seems to not have focus breathing either
Funny that you say sigma has a long focus throw. I find it's the only defect on that lens.... Maybe I'm on an old firmware? I was hoping I could change that in the settings, that's something the Panasonic should be able to do. Thanks for the comparison!
@@enricoparenti3057 Oh! I thought you were saying you wished it was shorter like the Panasonic and was the defect of the Sigma. That's interesting. Maybe you have a defect?
Thanks for the nice review! I consider buying the sigma 24-70mm and a dji rs2. But I can't find the lens on the compatibility list of the rs2 (at least not in combination with the s5, with the sony a7 series it is supported). do you know if it will work or if I will have problems with it?
this video is super useful for me thanks you, BTW i want to buy a camera and I'm confused over sony a7iii and lumix s5 or should i wait for any other camera because sony a7iii is very old i mean 2018 so I'm thinking that lumix might be the good option to go for ( but still I'm bit confused because I'm basically a sony shooter and i love the S-log ). I mean I'm super confused right now. The thing is that i want a camera that gives me the best colors and quality and also bit budget friendly. So, the things you can me with are as follows :- 1. Difference between 10bit 422 vs 8 bit. 2. S-log vs V-log. 3. Lens choices ( can i use sigma art lenses with lumix s5 ) 4. I want a overall camera which can do both video and photography so who's better lumix s5 or sony a7iii for photography. 5. Can i get cinematic looking footage from Lumix s5. 6. Your opinion over sony a7iii vs panasonic lumix s5.
Glad you enjoyed! I can help with your decision hopefully. 1. There’s a pretty big difference when it comes to color grading 10bit over 8bit. Personally, I don’t use 8bit anymore unless I know I don’t need to do any kind of color grading after. 2. S-LOG you’ll get a tiny bit more dynamic range over V-LOG but they will be similar otherwise. You probably won’t see a huge difference between them. 3. You can get L Mount Sigma lenses for the S5 and you can use EF lenses with an adapter, but unfortunately you can’t use E Mount lenses with the S5 via an adapter so you’d have to invest in new lenses. 4. They’re very similar cameras when it comes to photography. They will just function differently since they are different interfaces, but very similar cameras in terms of photography. In terms of video, the S5 has WAY more video features compared to the A7III. The biggest disadvantage Is the autofocus is better on the A7III for video. 5. Yes. Cinematic look is kind of a subjective word but you definitely can. 6. Personally I would go with the S5 but I don’t care about having fantastic autofocus. It’s convenient but the S5 beats the A7III in my opinion. If you care about autofocus, the A7III is a better choice or if you’re too invested in Sony E Mount lenses that might be a better choice to stick to Sony. You could also check out the Sony A7C. Basically the same as the A7III just smaller

No problem. I prefer using native Mount lenses so L Mount. Then I don't have to buy an adapter, but I also never owned any EF mount lenses so it's different. That's just me though
@@robmaupome Depends what mount the sigma lens is. If the sigma lens is Ef you will need an adapter, however if it is L-mount you will not be needing an adapter
I can't say specifically since I mainly shoot video, but I have heard it's more usable autofocus for stills, but you'll still get better results with the Panasonic lenses over Sigma
Dustin. With all due respect, your background music (if you can call it that) is totally distracting. No music would be better, but barring that perhaps you could just turn it down.
I like the music but agree with you that sometimes it's kind of loud. I make these videos typically super late at night so I'm not always the most observant. I'll keep it in mind in the future🙏
@@DustinArmstrongProEQ down the high end too, and it can still work well without competing the the range where your voice sits in terms of frequencies. It's that bright high end in the music while you're talking that MOST distracting, along with volume.
Panasonic needs to get their sh*t together in the AF department. It’s getting ridiculous. Huge fan of the L-Mount Alliance (S1 owner) but I need to buy a Sony for a lot of scenarios.
The biggest reason is Panasonic prioritizes image quality over AF. Dual pixel AF and Phase detect AF will dedicate pixels on the sensor as AF detect points which will reduce image quality. Contrast detect does not do this so you don't sacrifice image quality. So they have their shit together just different priorities
@@DustinArmstrongPro I use manual focus but I need a 7-inch monitor to see it better. You are right with the image quality, it is incredible and for that reason I love the camera. Maybe in the new generations they will fix that problem and I can better use the autofocus on a gimbal. Thank you.
Dustin Armstrong I don’t know, this sounds flawed in today’s world. We have amazing sensors and IF this would still be true, how about 30mp and we can enjoy the best of both worlds? I have seen the a7 pictures and they don’t differ by a great margin.
This video made me feel better about my lens decision. I prefer the Panasonic FF cameras over the competition for their body build, sensor (47 MP), optics and handling. However, they are expensive compared to the competition and so are the Leica and most Panasonic lenses. Luckily, I nabbed a clean S1R with 3K clicks for only $1650. The Panasonic 24-70 is nowhere to be found on the used market but I was lucky enough to find a pristine Sigma 24-70 for only $700. The seller was motivated to sell because he was leaving the country. Wow, I thought my Sigma was huge but that Panasonic is absolutely monstrous when zoomed in! I shoot mostly stills.
I'd say the 24-105 f/4 is the most versatile for the price. It is an f/4, but it's great for tons of different scenarios and is also a macro lens and is not crazy expensive
I believe I read somewhere that most Sigma lenses are what they call “near linear focus” I haven’t had any problems shooting with a follow focus on my Sigma lenses.
Why do these pricey lenses struggle so much with autofocus, when true video cameras with fixed lenses do this so easily? I use a Sony XD Cam for run and gun video situations, and it does nice job of continuous focus. Not to mention the fact that it goes all the way out to 348 mm, and way more using their clear image zoom. True, it doesn’t give me the selective depth-of-field that these lenses do. Maybe that trade-off is part of my answer?
Videocameras usually use smaller sensors, and more will be in focus. You can have more in focus, and minimize this going in and out of focus by changing to a slower f stop.
It's not the lens making the autofocus bad, it's the technology of the cameras autofocus system. The lens plays a role, but not as much as the camera

Dustin, what about focus motor in 24-70mm on AF mode with full-time manual (manual focus override)? Is it still linear (like on MF mode) or variable (non-linear) like in many other lenses?
i dont take a video, im now finding lenses for adapt to s1r. which lense(sigma, panasonic) do you recommend? does image quality gap very much between panasonic - sigma??
Is it not very annoying to manually focus with a fly by wire lens instead of a mechanical lens? All my panasonic lenses are fly by wire too and it's horrible to focus with

Thank you! I don't really like telling people what to get since it's not my decision. But personally, I don't think the Panasonics are worth the price when you compare them to the Sigmas especially if you don't use autofocus. I think the Sigmas are a much better value and have almost the same from a image quality standpoint. I have the Sigma 50mm and love it. You can get Panasonics for a decent price used if you want to go that route, but I definitely recommend the Sigmas. Also, super happy to see some women around here so thank you for commenting!
@@DustinArmstrongPro thanks for the reply! Usually close to parfocal is good enough for me but maybe I should rent them before pick one up. Super close to getting the S5 and your video was super helpful when it comes to selecting my workhorse lens! Still torn but the Panasonic lens is hard to justify.
This video was made a long time ago and that specific teleprompter I had to do it that way. A lot has changed now and I use a different prompter. Thank you!
Would it be correct to say that if the difference in AF is something that you can live with for video, it should be even more so for stills, and therefore for photographers the sigma is even more definitely the way to go?
@@DustinArmstrongPro I mean the Sony camera in your three way comparison. I used to shoot Sony, so it's interesting to note that their color is consistent on other models besides what I had. I found it too time consuming to color correct/shift Sony files. But for me video is just an afterthought, so I have no problems with Panasonic. I get the same exact keeper rates as with the Sonys I used before.
The test was more just to show the autofocus as a comparison, but yeah I do agree. Sony may have more accurate, I like Panasonic’s better from camera. Yeah for photos the autofocus is a different story. It has focus shift problems for video(I meant that in the video not focus breathing)
I'm seing that Lumix/Sigma does NOT allow a smooth ramping aperture on Sigma L lenses. I know the Sigma DG DN 24mm stair-steps it's aperture as it opens and closes in video. Is it true that you can run Sigma L lenses in video with auto aperture? I know that Sony DOES allow the same Sigma lenses to have a smooth ramping aperture. Sadly,...this is a deal breaker for me and Sigma for video. Lumix branded lenses DO have a true smooth aperture ramp.
Dustin Armstrong that’s my fav part of the s series. The s pro glass are phenomenal and due to the small adoption crowd. You can get them at a great price. I’ve got just about all the s pro lenses out. I’ve never paid more than 65% of Msrp on any of them. Something like that
@@JCustom Yeah that's a super good point. Although on the flip side side if you bought the sigma used, it'd probably be decently cheaper too. But totally makes the Panasonic easier to swallow price wise if the used price
I found an offer an the difference between the sigma and the panasonic is 550€ (in my case). Do you think is worth it to pay that extra money? I wouldn't buy it for 1000€ but since this offer is so good I am doubting :( I am starting in this world Thank you for your review!!
Some people do like the S PRO more but for me it was just too big and bulky and the Sigma has a better minimum focus distance so I prefer it. The linear Focus is more customizable on the S PRO though
I think your comparison between the backlit autofocus is a little unfair. Looks like you have an extra light that brightens your face in the Sony shot :P
Well there wasn't an extra light I can tell you that, but even still I've done plenty of other videos with Panny AF and it's still no where close to Sony
Thanks for sharing 👍 You should mix your sound to -16 LUFS. And use a brickwall limiter. This is way too loud, and your voice clips a lot in the start.
I am genuinely puzzled. Most of the reviews of this system focus on video features. I own both Sony and Panasonic cameras and would never even think of using the panasonic for video due to the horrible AF. However, I love my panasonic for photography as the focus for photography is lightening quick and accurate. For video I use my Sony. I just don't understand.
I mean ideally good AF would be nice yes, but panny has 4:3 Anamorphic modes, Anamorphic desqueeze, and 6k open gate. So that's 1 advantage over the Sony.
That focus test it's actually Panasonic's fault not sigma's as sigma's on Sony focus exceptionally well so same lens with same motor isn't focusing on Panasonic is a joke. Also when you compared Sony did you compare sigma on Sony or some other lens? Also that Panasonic's focus wasn't breathing it was hunting.
It's still not as good on a Sony with a Sigma but yes it is better only because Sonys AF is miles ahead of Panasonic. So yes like you said not good AF on Panasonic paired with not as good with the Sigma makes it pretty bad. No I don't own any Sigma E Mount lenses, but I've used them before and yeah the AF is much more usable. This video wasn't about Sony I just wanted to show how much better it is compared to Panasonic. That's what I meant shifting/hunting but said breathing for some reason.
I have Panasonic S5IIx with Sigma ART 24-70mm and I can say one thing; TERRIBLE AUTOFOCUS. According to this video (I never tested it) the Panasonic 24-70mm has the same problem. So, probably the problem is not in the lenses, but in the Panasonic Lumix S5IIx.
@@DustinArmstrongPro No, always. Light comes from all angles. The lens hood is designed to protect the lens from stray light. If you don't use it light will always make your image look more "washed out". Unless you are going for that look you should always use the lens hood, at least if you want the most contrast in your image.
@@DustinArmstrongPro Where you walk towards the camera, or in and out of frame both in daylight and low light conditions in movie mode. This is the part of the assessment that you call the "autofocus" section. But autofocus is how quickly and accurately the lens focuses when you press the shutter and is about stills as much as video. I am not splitting hairs, it's just that personally I would like to know about the rapidity and accuracy of the lenses focussing abilities when taking pictures.

Dustin Armstrong According to my tests with my 16-35f4, 24-70f2.8 and the 70-200f2.8 all of them are parfocal and no breathing at all 😉👍 Once you focused on the subject manually, just zoom with it.
That's super slick actually. Especially with the 70-200mm.
Dustin Armstrong its like having cinema lenses, which ones also have AF capabilities. I think we can’t ask more from Panasonic 👌
@@zsoltcselenyi622 Well I'm super spoiled so I'm going to ask more of them..... hahahaha😂
Good job bro!!! Thanks for the video.
🙏
If you tried this with the new s5ii/s5iix with new PDAF focus I think the focus will work so much better for both
Yes this video is outdated. The AF on these lenses on the S5II and S5IIX is great
@@DustinArmstrongPro I’m struggling to decide between Panasonic 24-70 and sigma, but sigma one is cheaper and also quite good!
Just wonder I do a lot of video to see which would be better,
I have the sigma 24-70mm. I like it. But you really can't go wrong with either
Dammit Dustin you are a funny guy. I owe you a beer or three if I ever run into you for some random strange reason
More of a rum kind of guy, but sounds good to me haha
Everybody talks about DN version of sigma. But nobody mentions OS version. On paper it's the same lens, but with optical stabilization.
Is it better or worse?
There's no l mount version that's OS currently besides the 100-400mm and even that one is coming soon. I don't know how the OS works with adapted lenses so honestly I'm not sure
Great vid
I want to buy the Sigma for my S1H.
Can you honestly tell me if there is any focus breathing and if the lens seems to be part focal?Let's say I zoom all the way in 70mm,focus and then zoom out if it keeps the focus?
Thanks !
I don't believe the Sigma is parfocal. I think it's near parfocal, but not perfectly. Couldn't tell you on the Sigma. Seems to not have focus breathing either
Thans buddy
Adequate analysis, thank you.
Funny that you say sigma has a long focus throw. I find it's the only defect on that lens.... Maybe I'm on an old firmware? I was hoping I could change that in the settings, that's something the Panasonic should be able to do. Thanks for the comparison!
Yeah that's totally subjective to my preference as well. Others may not like that
@@DustinArmstrongPro no I mean I find it too short!
@@enricoparenti3057 Oh! I thought you were saying you wished it was shorter like the Panasonic and was the defect of the Sigma. That's interesting. Maybe you have a defect?
@@DustinArmstrongPro hopefully is the firmware...
@@enricoparenti3057 I hope so!
So, the things you can me with are as follows :-
1. Difference between 10bit 422 vs 8 bit.
2. S-log vs V-log.
3. Lens choices ( can i use sigma art lenses with lumix s5 )
@@DustinArmstrongPro oh thanks, I'm glad you replyed instantly, BTW I don't own any camera or lenses yet I've worked with the Sony a6400, But now I wanna buy a camera for professional work like Wedding, Travel and RUclips, so it means I can use sigma art lens on it...?? (I don't have much knowledge about mounts)
So, is the auto focus is very much un-reliable...?
Is there any other camera you suggest me to buy and also the 2 prime lens choices with it and also suggest me the 2 prime lens choices for lumix s5
( Because i can only spend like a 1000 or 1200 dollar on lenses.) as my overall budget is around 3000 to 3200 dollar mark.
Where’s the S1h vs Arri Mini. Would love to see that.
Thanks, and just in time for me! I am looking at the sigma 24-70 2.8. I'm mostly doing doc films when I do the shooting and prefer to do manual focus and zoom. I have the s1H and I have a sigma L to EF adapter. would you recommend the L or EF mount?
No problem. I prefer using native Mount lenses so L Mount. Then I don't have to buy an adapter, but I also never owned any EF mount lenses so it's different. That's just me though
@@DustinArmstrongPro Do I need an adapter to use sigma lenses on a Lumix S5?
@@robmaupome Depends what mount the sigma lens is. If the sigma lens is Ef you will need an adapter, however if it is L-mount you will not be needing an adapter
i recently bought s5iix primarily for videography. Which these 2 lenses are the best option?
I own the Sigma but lots of people enjoy the s pro
Well done.
Autofocus for stills is good enough? Even for backlit portraits or low light? I’m not too concerned with video as I manually focus.
I can't say specifically since I mainly shoot video, but I have heard it's more usable autofocus for stills, but you'll still get better results with the Panasonic lenses over Sigma
what's the music in the background?
whats your go to lens for talking heads in studio ?
Hmmm I’d probably say the 24-70. But you can’t go wrong with the 50 1.4 or 24-105 f/4
Me as well
I don't understand how Panasonic did this sh*t., everything else is fantastic. (S1 owner)
Hi Dustin, do you know if Sigma 28-70 2.8 has better AF in a video than Sigma 24-70 2.8?
Panasonic is better
Where did you buy the s1r?
What about micro contrast ?
Is the sigma manual focus linear? Or is it like most fly by wire, non-linear? That would be a deal breaker for video
It’s not linear
Any chance of a comparison of the Panasonic 24-70 to the Leica 24-70?
Not currently but maybe
what is that Sony you used?
he said A7III
Hey Dustin, If you were limited to buy only 1 Panasonic lens for the AF, which lens would you suggest; mainly for single subject gimbal shots.
I'd say the 24-105 f/4 is the most versatile for the price. It is an f/4, but it's great for tons of different scenarios and is also a macro lens and is not crazy expensive
@@DustinArmstrongPro Thanks! But if price isn't an issue (willing to splurge on one) for gimbal shots.
Honestly would still say the 24-105 f/4. I think it's a great lens if I had to choose 1
Hi Dustin, does the S1 or S1H allow in the settings to change the focus throw to linear focus with this Sigma 24-70mm lens?
You can change it, but I don't think it affects anything on the sigma lenses. I believe it only works with Panasonic lenses
Super test😃
How about AF comparison when taking pictures? Anyone? Thanks
On what camera u tested these lenses ?
Panasonic S1H
Does focus by wire work well enough on the Sigma 24-70 to use manual focus with follow focus?
I believe I read somewhere that most Sigma lenses are what they call “near linear focus” I haven’t had any problems shooting with a follow focus on my Sigma lenses.
@@DustinArmstrongPro Thank you for your response. That's all I needed.
S1H vs ALEXA MINI pllllleeeeeeaaaaassssseeeeeeee!!!
Do they work with the LUMIX g9?
No
Why did you hold those in front of a black background? Can't distinguish and see those properly.
i dont take a video, im now finding lenses for adapt to s1r. which lense(sigma, panasonic) do you recommend? does image quality gap very much between panasonic - sigma??
Image quality no not at all. I like sigmas for the price
does ver.2.2 firmware improve the autofocus? maybe you can test it
I have plans to make a video very soon testing it
@@DustinArmstrongPro okk,i have updated and found little improvement.maybe have some problem in settings.
Is it not very annoying to manually focus with a fly by wire lens instead of a mechanical lens? All my panasonic lenses are fly by wire too and it's horrible to focus with
You can change it to linear. Still not mechanical but I feel like it helps
i really like your videos!! i have and s1h and s1 and the panasonic 24-70 but now im thinking one getting a 50mm but i dont know wich one to get :(
i watched your video comparing the sigma vs the panasonic but you didnt gave a final advide just like this video
so wich one u recomend?? the sigma or pana? i will be only use it for video and i never use autofocus
thanks :)
@@DustinArmstrongPro thanks for the advice
@@LUISABAKES no problem🙏
Have you noticed if either lens is more or less parfocal or not? That’s one of the biggest issues with modern photo lenses for video
I'm fairly certain the Panasonic is parfocal. The Sigma i believe is just near parfocal but was never intended to be parfocal
Can I put nd filters on the sigma?
Yes I believe it’s an 82mm thread. It may be 77mm but you can
This is awesome. Thank you! I like the Sony 24mm better than both of them.
No problem👍
SIGMA for me. I mostly shooting video in Manual focus.
Same here. Really can't go wrong with either though!
I can tell you’re using a teleprompter, maybe push it further away or reduce size of text. Otherwise fantastic video!
This video was made a long time ago and that specific teleprompter I had to do it that way. A lot has changed now and I use a different prompter. Thank you!
@@DustinArmstrongPro awesome, love the content regardless and congrats on the new setup.
Appreciate it🙏 such a better setup than my last place! Haha
Would it be correct to say that if the difference in AF is something that you can live with for video, it should be even more so for stills, and therefore for photographers the sigma is even more definitely the way to go?
In my opinion yes
Bro make one video on Crane 3S
If I can get ahold of one, I'll do it👍
Panasonic lens looks the best to me. Sony is yellow/green. Maybe accurate, but not nice to look at. Needs correction.
You mean Sigma I'm assuming? Or are you just talking the colors of the A7III compared to the Panansonic? I agree that the colors look better though
Is the 24 to 70 comparable to the 24 to 105?
Yes. The advantage with that lens is the extra focal length and it's also a macro lens. But it's an f/4 not a f/2.8
@@DustinArmstrongPro And the 24-105mm is Par-focal
Is the 24-70mm as well? I completely forgot to test that
@@DustinArmstrongPro From test I've seen it looks like the Panasonic 24-70mm is also. Wondering if the Sigma is.
I'll have to look into that
Sony still the best autofocus camera in the market , no focus breathing / hunting😀
Great vid. But let’s be honest, with green toe etc, second hand, demo. The Panasonic is really like 500 more
Thank you👍True totally a different story if you buy used
Dustin Armstrong that’s my fav part of the s series.
But totally makes the Panasonic easier to swallow price wise if the used price
whats green toe?
I found an offer an the difference between the sigma and the panasonic is 550€ (in my case). Do you think is worth it to pay that extra money? I wouldn't buy it for 1000€ but since this offer is so good I am doubting :( I am starting in this world Thank you for your review!!
I actually with the S5II bought the S PRO and used it and didn't like it and went back to the Sigma
@@DustinArmstrongPro really? Thank you so much! Then I will go for the sigma
Sony Fx3?
I am genuinely puzzled. Most of the reviews of this system focus on video features. I own both Sony and Panasonic cameras and would never even think of using the panasonic for video due to the horrible AF. However, I love my panasonic for photography as the focus for photography is lightening quick and accurate. For video I use my Sony. I just don't understand.
Can still use it for video with manual focus?
Sure, but why not have the option of the really good Sony AF? Is there something about the Panny that compensates for lack of AF?
I mean ideally good AF would be nice yes, but panny has 4:3 Anamorphic modes, Anamorphic desqueeze, and 6k open gate. So that's 1 advantage over the Sony.
@@DustinArmstrongPro Oh ok. These things are way beyond my ability, which is why I guess I didn't understand. Thanks.
No problem. Appreciate the watch
15:07 "Toneh"
Yes
I have Panasonic S5IIx with Sigma ART 24-70mm and I can say one thing; TERRIBLE AUTOFOCUS. According to this video (I never tested it) the Panasonic 24-70mm has the same problem. So, probably the problem is not in the lenses, but in the Panasonic Lumix S5IIx.
Not sure what you're doing on the S5IIX. The AF is actually usable. With the new 3.0 firmware update coming out soon the AF is even better
Who shoots in auto focus 🧘 😂
Oh Panasonic, you and your contrast based DFD.................
Super great I know
If you don't use lens hoods you don't know why they made them in the first place.
They help with lens flare. A little bit. And only sometimes
@@DustinArmstrongPro No, always. Light comes from all angles. The lens hood is designed to protect the lens from stray light. If you don't use it light will always make your image look more "washed out". Unless you are going for that look you should always use the lens hood, at least if you want the most contrast in your image.
surely you are talking about autofocus tracking not autofocus
I'm not sure what you are referring to in the video
@@DustinArmstrongPro Where you walk towards the camera, or in and out of frame both in daylight and low light conditions in movie mode. This is the part of the assessment that you call the "autofocus" section. But autofocus is how quickly and accurately the lens focuses when you press the shutter and is about stills as much as video. I am not splitting hairs, it's just that personally I would like to know about the rapidity and accuracy of the lenses focussing abilities when taking pictures.
Correct this was only a comparison when in movie mode using AF-C because I only use this camera for video 99% of the time.
