Good choice Bill. Merle took this song to #2, on the Billboard chart. This song reminds me of the Tracy Lawrence song "Find Out Who You're Friends Are"' especially the lines from Tracy's song 'Everybody wants to slap your back. Wants to shake your hand. When you're up on top of that mountain. But let one of those rocks give way then you slide back down look up. And see who's around then'. I knew you were gonna bring up Hank Jr. falling off the mountain cos my mind went there too 🙂 It would of been very ironic if Hank Jr. had cut it. It sure would of gave it a new meaning ... LOL Thanks for the reaction, you summed up the song well.

Early Merle is such a vibe. Could put on a playlist of this whole era of him and make an entire day of it.

Chuck Howard wrote this song and Merle released it in 1978.

Boy, Merel looks so young on that Album cover. I heard that movie producers wanted him in Hollywood in the late 60's early 70's because of his Leading Man good looks. Not sure he ever did much acting though.

This sounds like older Merle re-recording the original

Yeah it is a re-recording. Usually, when an artist re-records their songs, they never sound as good as the originals due to different players on the songs and the artist's voice being older. Mere is the exception to this for me because I have his collection of songs from the late 90's called "For the Record" 42 Number one Hits, and they were all re-recorded. I think his voice as he got older, got even better in my opinion. So much richness and fullness to his voice. I could listen to him sing anything, at any point in his career and would absolutely love it!

Thank you so much for the great review of Merle and this song. I learned to play guitar because my Dad had a band back in 1971 and I was 12. Dad loved Merle's music and there was a lot of it in his set lists and even 10 years later when I started to play in the bars and clubs Merle was what a lot of people wanted to hear and that continued for the next 30 something years. Thank you again for the great review and if you get a chance, check out Shelby Lynn What about the love we made. Bring tissues lol.

It's a deep, reflective song with a lot to say, but it always struck me as being a bit ungainly. Possibly because he doesn't cleave to the music with the vocals, playing around with the meter like Willie Nelson.

Merle could sing number tables in German and make it sound good.
