Hi Terie! Just found your channel and I think what you are doing is so interesting! Love how you tested out your theories on a test machine, I have never seen anyone use the foil like that. I agree that they did something different to the bed of the machines that was different, I always thought that they applied a heavier layer or more layers of the clear coat since that part of the machine would have the most traffic going over it and it needed to be more durable. I could be wrong, just a guess. Subscribed, I will be following your journey and I am rooting for you! -Jen

I am stripping a Singer 301 with Citri Strip and then had a fella tell me that due to it being aluminum that it’ll deep into it and ruin my paint down the line…. Fingers crossed that his mansplaining will be incorrect!

First, thanks for watching. After I strip it I use a cleaner before I use a self- etching primer. I use KLEAN-STRIP Premium Stripper After Wash. It is important to give your machine time to "air out" in between treatments. Patience plays a lot into having success. I learned that the hard way. The last machine I did, I used self etching primer, let it sit and then used a regular primer. Then let it sit for a few days.
When your machine doesn't go well, it is usually your base coat reacting to the top coat. Those clear coats can make the whole job go bad. But don't give up. And my thinking on this whole process is, if it doesn't go well I can always do it over, which I have done many times.

Hi Terie, yes I think you are probably correct. The thicker one is oldest. I was wondering if it was just the way I was looking at each one, but does the heavier one have a thicker bolt hole on the right side? Take a look and left me know. I am sure the older one did have some kind of stronger top coat on the base. This is so very interesting to me. Absolutely live for your video’s. Featherweight’s are definitely a passion of mine. Aww who am I kidding I’m addicted to the older singers. But the Featherweight are my favorite. I am restoring a treadle, for myself and one for a friend. We went to pick her’s up in Texas and it is a 1900! I love it so.
Thanks Glenda. I will let you know. I truly can feel a difference in the weight. I will assume the heavier is the older one. I will also assume that the bed of the machine was given more consideration when being painted. I can't wait until this is over and I am using her. Well, I am learning so much that I am not excited to learn more as I go along. The perk will be that I have a working and beautiful machine as the end result.

I know that works on cleaning cast iron skillets, but how would you protect the insides of things you didn’t want stripped? Just a question because, I truly have no idea.
