I'm two months in and just used aloe Vera gel to retwist. I was just explaining to my husband why some people's locs are super tightly retwisted and neat and why mine isn't like that. He's just got to learn lol. But thank you for the insightful videos to help me learn as I go and my locs grow!
FirstlyI would like you thank you for your time and your video! This is the issue that I seem to find video after video. YES we know JML is bad yes we know wax based and anything that doesn’t wash right out of your hair is bad. Everyone wants to bash these products but no one is giving sufficient information on the products we should use and where to find them. I’m going on 19 years with my locs and at the start of my journey there wasn’t a whole lot of information available and now that online/ social media is more prevalent there are a bunch of people that wants to talk about what not to use but aren’t giving alternatives. The title What PRODUCTS are safe for retwisting locs and you gave us Aloe gel and anything that will wash right out but WHAT ARE THE PRODUCTS?
Bernard Dailey Jr. Hey man your right at the moment i just use water to retwist but i really want to Find a product i found 2 products that i have not tried yet but i think it is pretty good but not cheap: spray n locks and dr locks Locking spray these products are sprays that you can use for retwist im not sure how good it works but videos i have seen on youtube locked pretty promising
I agree. Im trying to begin my two strand twist journey but I'm struggling to find information on how to start a healthy buildup free set of locs. I cannot find anywhere what shampoos to use on my hair before i twist and what products to use to hold my twists 😔
What I understood from this video is she suggests using products which are natural as possible as our hair doesn't really need anything in particular to loc, so mainly water based as they can be washed out easily, so aloe vera gel or flaxseed gel or rose water for retwisting. That way you don't need a harsh shampoo to get the product out. If you decide to use products which are not so natural make sure you use a shampoo that can clean that product out. A lot of people recommend Taliyah waajid, Design Essentials, Dr Locks, for example. Build up is less with natural products. That's my understanding
I have been locd for a few years and I have found that the actual “product brand” isn’t what to focus on. There is no one thing that works for everyone. Try this... you need a good clarifying shampoo. If you wash frequently then incorporate a moisturizing shampoo. The key is Not to use a moisturizing shampoo too frequently because the purpose of those shampoos is to detangler your hair. Locks are the opposite of that. If actual name of a product is something you insist you have to have them Neutrogena anti-residue shampoo is a good clarifying shampoo to use. But just like the moisturizing shampoo you don’t want to use it too often because it’s going to stripping out things but is key to not having environmental build up or just build up from your natural sebum ( scalp oil) If you are a person that sweats a lot or works in an environment where there’s dirt flying all the time this is good for you. A good moisturizing shampoo would be by the dr locs brand. It is called yasin shampoo. Now it is expensive. But works extremely well. But you can basically go to the store find a moisturizing shampoo or a clarifying shampoo and make sure that you dilute it before you put it on your locs. So maybe take a spray bottle put some water in it and put some shampoo in it shake it up and spray it on that way so you aren’t putting big globs of shampoo into your locs. Then the key is to rinse rinse rinse. It takes me a good half an hour or so to wash my hair simply because I’m rinsing it to make sure there’s no soap left as our locs are like sponges. As far as re-twisting you can literally just take aloe from a leaf. The jelly that you find in the store has too many extra unnecessary things in it. You can go to any grocery store and get one aloe leaf even if your hair is extremely long as a little goes along way. If you want to learn how to break it downThere are tons of videos out there to just show you how to scrape it out of the leaf. And just like someone here said oil and water is fine. While your hair is still damp you take some oil (what ever oil works for your hair and scalp. That is a decision you have to make every one is different can’t stress that enough!) run it through your hair and roots and then you re-twist. I know people want to know exact product names and exact things to use but the trick is everyone’s hair is different especially everyone’s locks as long as you keep it as simple as possible that’s all you need. I have done water and oil re-twist in my hair, I have also done aloe vera gel’s and it’s lasted fine and flaxseed gel. You don’t want to try to glue your roots down with a whole bunch of heavy products. Healthy hair reverts to our curls which means it is going to frizz and puff up. We want our hair to be free to do what it wants to do that’s why we loc our hair right? All the things I mentioned I have learned from curlynugrowth both on her site and videos. She doesn’t give a whole lot of product names simply because the products aren’t necessarily what you need to focus on. A lot of times the best things for our locs are simple things that we can just do ourselves. Companies are out here to make money which is fine. But the truth is if you want Healthy locs the best thing to do is let your hair be able to breathe there’s not very many products that are on the shelf they don’t have a lot of preservatives. We often complain of the things that cost too much. That is because it takes time to break down natural products so that your hair can better absorb them. If I ever have to use a product from a brand per se it is Dr. locs or NuGrowth Essentials by this lady hear. They are homemade and you know exactly what is in them. It’s not that I am pushing or endorsing those products because I do not know those ladies personally I just know that they make their products and ship their products with your own hands and they have taken time to study our hair and not just someone in a lab thinking of what to mass produce. I hope this was helpful and that it encourages you to go out and maybe make something to put into your hair yourself. It may take a little more time for taking the time to maybe make something to put in your hair and learn what it like instead of cookie cutter ideas will yield positive results. Bless
So INFORMATIVE! Thank you for being honest about products marketed for locs and the best gel to use. Alot of people think they need products to make their hair loc but that is not true. Afro textured hair will easily loc. Thats what it naturally wants to do :)
Thank you so much for sharing this info! My locs are freeform, so I don't use any traditional products in my hair at all. (I do cleanse my hair with a natural soap/shampoo bar and I've been trying out rose water as my moisturizer, which I have been enjoying so far.) I'm too afraid of the effects of buildup. I've seen too many photos and videos of people who have lost locs from the weight of buildup. It's so sad and preventable!
Hey if aloe vera gel and flaxseed gel can go bad once they're out of the fridge or after a week or two, wouldnt they go bad in your hair as well given that they do that have any preservatives?
This was so helpful! I'm looking for more natural products now that my locks mature! I'm going to try the build up test and I'm going to make some flaxseed gel as well! What do you use to cleanse and condition your hair?
For someone that doesn't have locks I know so much about them from watching your videos... LOL. So im on my 13 set of starter locs😂😂 This may sound like wishful thinking but I'm in my third week and I swear they seem like they're locking and the crazy part about it is this is the set that I put the least amount of products on. I use fruit of the earth aloe vera gel, rose water and vitamin E oil. That's it! I'm going to wash with a very gentle moisturizing shampoo heavily diluted and condition with an herbal rinse. I'm going to retwist with aloe vera gel and missed every couple of days with the rose water, vitamin e infusion. 🤞🏽🤞🏽 #nobuildup
I use Ors and it’s not holding my hair. It’ll last about 2-3 days then all my hard work goes to waste. It’s so frustrating. So I’m hoping for better results with the aloe vera
I'm about to embark on a DIY loc journey and I'm researching the best products to use to start and maintain them...I was thinking about the Kinky Curly line because it's organic and mainly clear so do you have any insight on those products (Come Clean Shampoo and Spiral styling spritz to twist -- it's not an actual traditional spritz just basically a thin gel)? Or just using organic store bought products period I'm sure is better.
Lola Rew lol ill try but I won't make any promises I've been talking about locs forever and a day but now that I'm about to have my first child I figure this would be the best time to do it since I won't have much time on my hands for hair upkeep with a newborn plus I'm just lazy with my hair anyway so locs are right up my alley idk I've been so hesitant and scared

@@Martha.2008 im using the gel right now but I have both products and I only use a small amount and on the rare occasion that I have any build up I do acv rinses sometimes but I honestly can go months with out doing anything to my hair at this point with no issue
Then the question becomes which Aloe Vera gel. I had some Fruit of the Earth clear Aloe Vera gel in the plastic container, and at first I liked it....but after a while, I didn't like the feeling it left on my hair (it has carbomer, which is a petro-chemical). I tried a mix of Aloe Vera Gel (I think the brand is Lily of the Desert I got from Whole Foods, and EDIBLE) with a little Jamaica Black Castor Oil. But it made my scalp feel itchy, so I dropped that... But now I think maybe I should go back and give it another whirl, EXCLUSIVE of the JBCO adder... I used TW "Lock it Up", but it has some things in it, too... Yeah...I think I'll try that Lily of the Desert drinkable Aloe Vera Gel again!
When Im retwisting my love I use natural water and Jamaican black castor oil

Aloe Vera
Flaxseeds
Chia seeds and

It’s great
I use rose water to re-twist and also spray on my hair a couple of times during the week. What are your thoughts on rose water?
+Anita Henderson Rosewater is good. The moisturizer in my product line is rose water based 👌🏾
Anita Henderson I've started to retwist with rose water too!

it is roses soaked and boiled in distilled water.

Is that residue in your hair??
I use the My Joie Gel. Does anyone else know if it will leave build up down the line?

Have you used Aunty Jackies Flaxseed Elongating Curling gel? If not would you recommend it??
I'm curious too, I have that product and would not want it to go to waste.
Can you please recommend a shampoo for my locs?
I only use rosewater and coconut oil to retwist..

Does it actually like lock?
do you sell those earrings?
New starter locs I will be using water and castor oil to retwist.

flax seed gel for retwisting???

Horrible stuff!
Really what Cantu is geared towards natural hair and they use natural ingredients
