    My response is late but here goes....i am 3 years loc'd and i only use JoJoba oil (very very light) on my scalp and rose water when twisting two to three times a year. I do not put any products or oils on the length of my locs. When i feel the need to oil again i use a minute of the olive oil hair spray (green can) on my scalp. Massage that in and go.
    Washing? Diluted Terressentials Lemon mud wash. I use aloe vera juice (get the big jug from Walmart) to dilute the mud. I start at the scalp, dip my locs in the mix as much as i can and then move to the length. Wash twice and let wash 2 sit for 30 mins or so and rinse clean. No problem rinsing the mix out. 👍
    I agree with less is more. No buildup, no lint, fresh locs and thick edges. #lowmaintenance 👏🙌👍

    Not trying to discredit you King but the picture with the red starter locs, the clips on the roots are a no no. It can cause breakage. Use a little tension with lower clip placement coming from a 10 year licensed loctician. Peace and love brother good review

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  6 лет назад +78

      How exactly do temporarily placing clips cause breakage? Unless I'm literally ripping thru hair sliding clips in there's no breakage occurring during that process. No disrespect but it doesn't take 10 years experience to know that. Also,She wasn't getting a retwist. She was getting starter locs in a resistant texture that required clips to give more distinction and hold at the roots while her hair set in coils.

    • @deeb.7064
      @deeb.7064 6 лет назад +75

      @@AfrikanHairGod you can still get the same result that you need placing the clips in a brick lay, retwist or no retwist. I have noticed from different people when they clip at the root, in time the loc grows thin. It didn't take me 10 years to know that sir. So if it works for you, keep at it but I'm not coming at your neck I'm only giving advice... Didn't think it was harm in that...

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  6 лет назад +109

      @@deeb.7064 There's multiple ways to skin a cat and different ways to retwist locs. This works for me and whatever you do works for you. Thank you for the advice, but just know if you intend on going out of your way to correct someone, and they in turn correct you in the same way, don't get so defensive about it. I'm not bothered that you tried to offer me advice, your statement just isn't true. Proper technique is everything. Clips don't cause breakage, tension and improper technique do.

    I used most of the products that you spoke about when I had locks and I can definitely agree that I had terrible buildup as a result. My locks ended up being super heavy and I think that was because of the build up. And regardless of how many apple cider vinegar cleanses I did I could not get it out. When I cut my locks off you could just see years of lint and waxy buildup in them! I think if I had been more knowledgeable I would’ve never used Murray’s beeswax in my hair.

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  7 лет назад +33

      Nik Fab the truth of it all is that these products people use don't really make your retwist last longer. Natural hair has a natural memory to it when you set damp hair and allow it to set and dry. All of those products just coat the strands which usually leads to gunk, flakes, buildup and stiff locs. I always recommend that everyone experiment with retwisting with just water and oil. After doing this for about 3 or 4 months, you will be able to determine whether you truly need something more to help with retwisting your hair but in most cases oil is really all you need to properly maintain locs.

Its now laying on my shoulders. No two locs are the same. Some are round, some flat, some have like a branch and they are all thick. So far so good. Thanks! again for the useful information. Now I know what not to use. I've been using Biotin scalp oil. And my hair has been growing so fast and long. I need a new growth retwist. I have to figure out what to use. Thank! Stay safe and well... 🤗

I cut one loc out of sheer curiosity, and the inside was gray! I did a cleanse but I had so much buildup in the back I cut them and I got an undercut which love (less locs to retwist!) Now I use a cleansing shampoo and a moisturizing one with a hot oil treatment and I’m good. My hair was dry because I was using dr bronners, and the Cantu shampoo left residue on my hair too finally I found a decent shampoo too

    When I first got my hair relaxed in 1967, the only way to style it was to wet set it. At home I would do this and let it dry all day. (Not many at home dryers like in the salon back then) That meant going about my day with rollers in my hair and a scarf to cover them. The result was beautiful, but so time consuming. When blow dryers came on the scene, that sped things up a bit, but the question now was how to get the curl. I used to braid my hair into 6 sections and roll up on sponge rollers. I used the blow dryer to dry as much as possible before going to sleep. In the morning, I had nice waves and curls to which I applied some Alberto V05 to get shine and keep the frizz down. Slowly, heat appliances began to appear that would replace those old press and curl combs and irons. At first, I was told that use of these was a no no on relaxed hair. But, as years passed, oils and sprays were introduced to coat relaxed hair to be able to use heat at low temperatures. I tried this, and wow, how fast it was to do my own hair. I used pressing oil with my curling iron to make the curls. All was good until I went to a salon and discovered that they commonly used high heat to dry and straighten with flat irons. I was impressed with how straight my hair was and that the process was so fast. I was working then, so I could afford to go regularly. Some months later I began to not like the feel of my hair and the rough ends. My friends told me that they were doing their own hair now. I took matters into my own hands and researched the issues. With a good pair of shears I trimmed away the rough and split ends, chose new shampoo and deep conditioning products and got my hair back on track. Now that I'm retired, I'm back to the roller and braid set, no heat other than under a bonnet dryer. I guess that I have come full circle. Life is good!

      Are your locs mature? I find with starter locs oil n water doesn't cut it. Hair gets messy real quick. If your locs are mature, how long does your ReTwist last with oil n water 🙂 ???? Mine gets messy day later... By a week it's s hot mess 🤦🏽‍♀️

    JUST started the journey a few weeks ago and I'm willing to learn as its very new to ke and I'm experimenting a little to see what may and may not work for me. I've heard multiple things on both sides in regards to gel and I know for me I want mine to be healthy as possible as I can make it. I tried Jamaican Mango and Lime gel and it seems to have worked well enough but I'm also nervous that it could present problems in the future since it's all new to me.

    My son's locs are mature and his hair is thick. He plays sports and works out so anything gel based is not an option. I interlock most of his new growth and palm roll it at the roots with wax. It seems to be the only thing that keeps it looking nice. I use a clarifying shampoo but he does have some buildup. Do you have any product suggestions?

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  2 года назад

      You should allow his hair to swell and frizz. It's what the hair is intended to do. You have already interlocked so there's no need to add more product. It's actually bad to use heavy product with interlocking. Cut back on the products and put his hair in styles like two strand twists. That way he can wash his hair after a week or two and still be able to release them for a clean, fresh, crinkled look. All of that product will weigh his locs down and create more issues than it helps.

    My mom use the mango Jamaican twist wax and it works for her hair but it leaves it dry. My brother use it but his hair thrives. My mom only wash her hair like 4 times a month and she dont have much build up but we are trying to find her good oil for her fine hair. Also her dreads are colored red and she does 3-4 month retouch.

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  7 лет назад +6

      The color could be the culprit in her dryness. The wax wouldn't help that issue but would only make her hair more drier. She should also try to cut back on the washing to maybe 2x a month.

What I do use to remove whatever build up I get is apple cider rinse ! This works . I use mango and lime products and I’ve never had an issue w them . Why all the pins though ? Whenever I retwist I never use pins. I guess different stuff for different hair types .

      Being water soluable doesn't mean that it can't cause build up. Like you said a lil isn't going to cause issues but the point I was making is that gels aren't necessary for retwists at all.

      You will need to do a thorough clarifying shampoo session. Luckily your hair is newly started so it won't be hard to pull out forever, this will greatly disturb your loc foundation so you may need to restart your locs if they come undone completely trying to shampoo that stuff out.
