- In this video Leah offers an in-depth guide for veterans undergoing a Compensation and Pension (C&P) exam for knee pain. As a US Army veteran, former C&P examiner, and physician assistant, Leah discusses various knee conditions eligible for VA disability, including patellofemoral pain syndrome, meniscal tears, and arthritis. She explains how these conditions can be service-connected directly or secondarily due to other injuries or issues like weight gain. The video outlines the preparation for a C&P exam, detailing the contents of the pre-exam packet and the importance of the Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ).

Just got done with my Knee C&P Exam today and this video is spot on. Thank you for doing what you do, and appreciate the help with letters as well :)
Thank you for watching and I am glad you found it helpful!!
Always read over your DBQ and doing the exam do not push through your pain/tension, instead stop when you feel pain.
Awesome tip friend!
I have 25 different General Medicine claims. Thanks for the insight and knowledge!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!!
Great video...knee rate is about ROM....thanks Leah.
Thank you for the feedback and thanks for watching!
I appreciate this my c&p examiner did not use anything she looked me had me bend and basically nothing further happened
Sorry to hear that sir. Glad you found this helpful
Well did you get a rating? If so then you got lucky.
I specifically told my examiner that my left knee is secondary to my right knee jump injury because I put more weight on my left knee. He worded it as arthritis not service connected 🤬
Fortunately I was awarded radiculopathy for my shoulders because of arthritis in my neck and was awarded 100%. Had I not been awarded that, I was definitely going to file a supplemental claim along with a Nexus letter from my pcp.
That is super frustrating but I am very happy to hear that you were able to get up to 100%!
I tried claiming the same thing from being on jump status and was denied
They kicked the can down the road and wanted to see what action you would take - if any.
Mine pops going downstairs. Acl reconstruction in the Navy. The scar area is the worst. Patella area pops😮. This was done 35 years ago on active duty, so service connected. We’ll see how it goes
I am sorry to hear this sir! Thank you for watching and please keep us posted
Thanks!
You bet! Thank you for watching!
Diagnosed in 1992 with the Patellafemoral Syndrome bilateral. have had pain in both knees for years.. Can not sleep with my legs flat. have to use a pillow.. sit for long period, my knees ache and pop often when sitting. Got my C&P exam next week.
Sorry to hear this! Best of luck with the exam!
Very helpful, thank you for your very valuable time.
Thank you for watching!!
Thank you ma’am!
Thank you for watching!!
Got my knee c&p exam next week. I have service connected back and ankle. Not sure how they can deny it, but I'm sure they will, and I'll have to get it on appeal.
Best of luck! Keep us posted and thank you for watching

I had a C&P examination for my right knee. Doing the exam, the examiner never took my paperwork, she only asked me to bend my knee twice and did not use a goniometer. This seems like it was not a thorough examination because the exam was done at the reception desk and I heard people walking around in the back. There was no privacy and I felt like she was dismissive.
I think there is a conflict of interest, because the examiners are getting paid by the VA and doing exams for the VA. Veterans should be able to pick their own doctors to do C&P exams.
I’m sorry to hear this sir. Best of luck and thank you for watching
You can go to your own doctor to do a C&P exam that’s why the DBQ is available to be printed out.
How do I find my DBQ for these different topics?
What I’d they don’t use the tool, do I ask for it or no?
Here is a link to the DBQ's. www.benefits.va.gov/compensation/dbq_publicdbqs.asp
As far as what to do if they do not use the tool you can always inquire about why they are not
If you have runners knee and have pain in your knee but no ROM limitations or instability can you likely be rated at 10%?
Unfortunately I am not the expert on ratings, you may want to check with a VSO or another legal professional
My doctor was late, he never asked my pain level, he grabbed my legs and started moving them himself, even past my resistance and pain level. Never asked me anything, just how does it hurt. Total time spent with me was about 15 minutes, never did ROM.
Also never did goneometer
I am very sorry to hear this. You may want to talk with a legal professional about that. Thank you for watching
great info thank you

I just went through c n p exam Less then 6 hours ago for my knee he used that gomiomnator while I was sitting in a chair he took two measurements and asked me a few questions and that was it whats your thoughts.
Well hopefully he got the correct measurements. Keep us posted
Did you get your rating
@@kobeplayeddefensetoo1351 I don't know I'm still waiting
I was given 10 percent for knee sprain I was hit by a hit and run driver and have a fracture on the tibia.
I made thorough notes of what happened “meniscus torn, while in service and I was operated in a military hospital” and my symptoms. I signed my notes. Can the C&P examiner accept this statement. This exam is as a result of a duty to assist error where the VA claimed my injury was not service related on the initial claim. Thank you in advance.
I am sorry to hear this. It would be best for your to follow up with a legal professional regarding evidence related questions from the administrative side. Best of luck!
I have been told that you cannot pyramid but you can have different ratings for your knees. That sounds confusing. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, Crepitus, Osteoarthritis, Instability, Bone Spurs and Flexion of Knee, can you be rated on each of these or is that considered pyramiding?
It is confusing I agree! This is a pretty good blog that explains: cck-law.com/blog/va-disability-benefits-for-knee-pain/
I had injured my knee in an Active-Duty training exercise and hyperextended it, even with having surgery and having an LOD and proof of injury and all the bells and whistles, the VA only granted me 10%, I'm still feeling pain till this day after 2 years and still the VA doesn't want to budge from that rating. I'm getting screwed. They can see the difficulty of the mobility but still keep that rating. I dislike these fly by night examiners who write the DBQ all wrong.
I’m sorry to hear this sir. Thank you for watching
Can my knee that I injured in service be service connected if I broke the same leg years after I got out?
Possibly best of luck and thank you for watching!
6:20 are the dates of diagnoses filled in by the examiner? And are those dates the date of your examination or the dates from your military medical records?
The examiner does fill out the dates of diagnosis. It is the date of your diagnosis whenever that was
@@prestigeveteranmedical thank you.
I've been filing for my left knee(and back) since 2014. It's been an off and on process. From this, I've gotten least 1 denial and a couple of no responses(because i was filling out the wrong forms). I almost gave up on the whole thing but now the VA is "helping" me a little bit. In JAN they sent me forms 20-0995(supplemental claim) and 20-0996(higher level review).
P.S. I finally got my 1st rating for tinnitus---10%. My sleep apnea was denied though. Getting the rating(s) you deserve is a process and fight. Dont give up. It's money(and compensation)ALL vets from ALL branches deserve.
I am so sorry to hear this sir. Hopefully you are working with a good VSO that can help you out
Consider a lawfirm that specializes in VA disability. They charge nothing upfront. You only pay them 20-30% of back pay. They've knocked my appeals out of the park and have got me good ratings on things I didn't think I had much of a chance on.
I'm still in appeal for apnea. That's a tough one to get if you weren't diagnosed in service, but there are paths to get it. I know I had apnea when I was active duty, but I couldn't get a doctor to order a sleep study on me. Didn't get diagnosed until 4 years after discharge.

Had a C&P yesterday for knee and back. The range of motion was performed once for each test. Should I worry?
I am not sure about that sir. Hopefully it will turn out positively! Keep us posted
Hello back. It was service connected and approved but deffered for higher evaluation.. thank you for the videos they helped me in my case.
Very informative, thank you.
Thank you for watching!
I went in but since i was in so much pain he couldnt finish the test. I got denied. I had 10% for a knee scar. Not the surgery i had on AD in 2006. I filed to reevaluate my knee. The va dropped my 10% for knee scar and gave me 10% for the surgery and dated it back to 2018. That was the year i was denied. My actual knee evaluation is this Monday.
I am sorry to hear this. Best of luck at your exam!!
My exam was less than 5 minutes and the doctor never physically touched me. He asked very vague questions very quickly and wouldn’t let me answer fully. I’m just trying for an increase because there is arthritis in my service connected knee now and the Community Care Orthopedic surgeon is talking knee replacement as a treatment option.
I'm truly sorry to hear that, sir. Thank you for tuning in
@Prestige Veteran Medical Consulting
Thank you for the through information. During the exam are Veterans allowed to take hard copies of their medical evidence for review ie copies of military medical records? It seems like not all providers have taken the time to review this information prior to meeting with the Veteran and was wondering if its allowed to be reviewed during the exam? Thank you for your time.
Yes you can bring it if you would like. They may just say they already have it but you can bring it. Thank you for watching!
i have gone to C&P's where they were not provided any of the documents that i had submitted. I always take copies for them to keep, and bring mine too so i can show where i had already been through what they are asking. JUST DON'T GIVE ORIGINALS!!!!
If you're currently in physical therapy for one or more of your service related conditions you're gathering evidence for, would it be better to have your PT fill out this information for you?
If they are willing to that may be helpful but I do not believe that PT's are an accepted type of medical provider for these forms. You may want to check with a legal professional on that
@@prestigeveteranmedical I did look up some information on this and for muscular skeletal, the DBQ's filled out by PT's are considered, but you can also have your doctor review and sign off on them to give them more weight. Just wanted to share the information with the community for anyone who is also in the process of gathering evidence for their claim. Thanks!
Thank you for the updated info@@MK-ue6mt
My knee injury got denied. At the C&P appointment the doctor could feel my knee grinding and asked how long it's been going on. I was asked if arthritis was an issue and it is. It was denied. Injury was from a torn meniscus.
I am sorry to hear this sir. Often times you can have arthritis and a torn meniscus at the same time. The issue is often related to the examiners ability to show a link between the issue and your service itself.
@teaaet1 I got out in 2010. Getting a MRI as soon as it's approved. X-rays didn't show anything wrong with the bones.
Best of luck to you sir. Thank you for watching!!
you can get 30% for a knee
Thank you for watching!@@SpaceRanger187
I had C & P on my knees and was denied. I ask for a higher level review and they found a duty to assist error. I just received a email about having another C & P exam. If they schedule this one with the same person can I request that someone different do it since he didn’t do it right the first time?
That is a really great question. I am not sure but I would hope so! You may want to discuss with a legal professional or maybe call the VA's white house hotline for support www.va.gov/VE/pressreleases/2019052104.asp
Yes I requested to not have the last examiner as I felt that provider wasn't motivated to assist.
I submitted knee pain for a C&P exam. My issue isn't so much mobility. It's shin splints due to flat feet. Should I have been more specific with my claim? Or will they do a full exam for knee pain?
I am so sorry to hear this sir. I am not sure what the best process is for how to claim these items. Have you chatted with a legal professional about this?
Hey felliw vets can some help me with an idea what to expect my army mri showed slight torn patellar tendons and now theres constant pain and pressure and clicking in my right knee when i bend down and stand up or go up stairs. What do you all think if i would get anything for that from the va???
I am so sorry to hear that. It just depends on alot of the measurements on the C&P exam. Best of luck to you!
After having a C&P exam for knees 4 months ago VA is going to get a medical opinion from another doctor for which I don’t need to attend. Is that normal?
I am not really sure sure because there are so many reasons/variables that can go into that.
Congratulations on the new Branding.
😍😍😍
My knees are horrible. Pain shoots and throbs constantly. They are unstable and sometimes lock. I have documented arthritis, and it is getting worse. Does arthritis rate a knee replacement if it gets bad enough?
Many people with severe arthritis do end up getting a knee replacement. Hang in there sir.
@@prestigeveteranmedical Remember "The Adams Family" show...? I walk like Lurch sometimes. It sucks, hopefully the next set of xrays shows more damage, and then it'll go from there...
@@scottjenkins6972 keep us posted sir!
Mention to doc you have a lateral derangement and fall down, more often, of late.
Means your knees buckle, side to side.
But, before you do knee replacement surgery, investigate the appliance, the glues, the surgeon, the hospital, the anesthesiologist, the recovery room and the like.
Do not jump out of the frying pan into the fire.
@@prestigeveteranmedical I have a question I have arthritis with multidirectional meniscus tears was denied for my back due to just having surgery was formerly in a airborne unit what should I do proving service connection.
Pretty sure my examiner didn’t know how to use the tool. When she did the extension she had both ends of the tool out. I only did it under my own weight. She didn’t test it herself. When I did it she only took one measurement. Is there anything I can do about that?
I am sorry to hear that sir. I am not really to sure about that. Have you discussed this with a legal professional?

I’ve been rated 10% for both my knees since 2011, but I am and was in stage 4 arthritis in both of my knees and got denied for increase. I just got a total knee replacement surgery on one of them a month and a half ago and still waiting for my temporary 100% disability. I submitted the paperwork just a few days after my surgery. How long do you actually get disability for? My supervisor also had a total knee replacement and got his for three months, my veteran service officer tells me it’s six months, and the C and P examiner says it’s a year.
I am not to sure but I would say your VSO who is a legal professional would have more insight then a C&P examiner because this is a legal matter. Maybe double check the inconsistency with your VSO
It's whatever the VA deems.
you can get 30% for a knee
@@SpaceRanger187 I have a C and exam for my 6 month out right knee. I’m at 80%, but with combined ratings, I’m 84. So just bump the knee up from 10 to 20, that’ll put me at 90%. Fingers crossed!

My Dr. Gave me a prescription for a knee patella sleeve. Would that be considered knee patella brace?
depends on the person reviewing it. I think some people would consider it but I could see how some would not. Tough one
Is there such a thing as a knee sprain
Yes there is sir. Thank you for watching
@prestigeveteranmedical they said knee sprain but I was hit by a hit and run driver in 1982 and there was a fracture tibia
Got denied for service connection and then applied Higher Level Review with the advice and service of a VSO and was denied again. Their reasoning is that their doctor was more convincing than my doctors Nextus letter. Is it possible to gether additional information and resubmit?

You would think that a medical professional would live by the creed of their profession. One goes to a np and then get send to the second np to evaluate and it's the wife she or he should say something to excuse one or both of them for c&p exam cause the one after the initial review will just continue what the previous medical professional had documented
