One bounce too many - I crashed the Habu

  • Well, my luck finally ran out with the E-flite Habu 50mm. It is a great flying jet, the EDF sounds awesome, but I can't land it right for the life of me.
    It will be repaired and I will maybe look for options for softer wheels.

    Crashed mine a couple of times, and it looked worse than yours. After a few tooth picks, and foam tac, it flies as good as ever. Thanks for the great videos.

      I hope it holds up after the repair, but it's a tough little jet. Thanks for your kind words, it's just me with a phone on my head and my planes, I try to have better content and video all the time, really appreciate the support!

    "the runway's clear" 🤣 Love it ! Every time I've watched your vids I have always been jealous of the quiet, straight road you fly by.
    Sorry about the crash. One thing I wonder is if you'd flown it more than just on the vids you've shown, in particular if you'd flown it at slow speed and seen how it handles? Each of your approaches seemed very hot to me, still carrying what I felt was way too much speed, so it's still in it's very responsive state and elevator obviously is twitchy as heck. I just felt that if you slowed down and approached slower you'd be in a position to land and you would be less likely to then bounce or rise back up as the wing stops flying. (mind you I haven't flown a fast jet, they may be pigs at low speed I dunno, but that's how I'd be approaching the landing phase given the twitchiness - or even add more expo on elevator for landing so your control inputs get dampened a touch)

      It's a decent spot, usually quiet but I do have the occasional car speeding by so I'm careful, wouldn't want to scare any driver 😅
      I've had a few flights off camera and they went similar, I think I'm trying to hard to touch down right in front of me. I haven't fixed it yet but I will soon and keep on practicing.
      It's a strange little plane, part jet, part glider 😀

    Honestly i have only seen a few pilot's land that jet without more than a few bounces and a lot of crash landings i believe it's in the design myself. I wish i had footage of my most recent crash it was a total loss. My umx conscendo got a twichy rudder servo and the very next flight the elevator servo went out i could not control it at all it hit the street from high up and blew up in pieces only thing left was the ailerons servos everything else was destroyed not all the glue in the world could fix it. But it appears you got lucky and it looks to be easily fixed i would suggest taking off the landing gear and just hand launch and land on grass just because so many good pilot's are having the same problem. Thanks for the video and i know we will see that bird back in the sky soon, have a wonderful day my friend!!! PEACE

      Oh man, sorry to hear about your Conscendo! I heard others having servo issues, hope it's not something common, just took mine out today just gliding. Had some wind and had it in the air for almost 30 minutes on a 3s 300.
      It's an amazing little glider.

      @A.M.-RC it's very good in the sky but I am not sure about getting another one because I see more people having a problem I believe it's in the circuit board after it got a twich in the rudder servo the elevator servo jammed forcing a bad crash I hope it's only a few because I really want that airplane it is one of the better flying umx's .but it happens sometimes just got to move forward.

    Don’t let this discourage you, Alex. The easy the Habu flies, the terrible it is on landing. My first landings looked exactly the same and with first, I mean plenty! It was so weird! At some time I noticed that it is just a matter of timing. Don’t even try to touch down on the mains first with nose up. Attempt a three point landing and actually it seems best to me to touch as parallel as possible but with one main and the front gear first. Try, to first bleed of more speed, it seemed to come in too hot. And another tip: never use SAFE on landing: When it bounces the first time throwing the nose up, Safe (over)compensates and smashes it into the ground. Subsequent bounces will be even more aggressive.this is why it looks like a flat stone on water. I believe to have noticed this on your attempts, but I might be wrong.
    I hope you will find some of this helpful and working for you.

    • @A.M.-RC
      @A.M.-RC  4 месяца назад

      Thanks for the advice! I did try a few landings without safe, I see what you mean it could make it even worse. But indeed this is unlike any of my other planes, I bounced others but never in every attempt.
      I will try to slow it down as much as I can and probably just fly it in until it's on the ground. There's a lot I have to think of in those seconds, hope I can get it right sometime 😂

      @@A.M.-RC You will, definitively! My own flight skills have dramatically improved since I joined a modelers club and fly almost daily and for several hours. It is really just a matter of practicing. I saw that you have seen the comment and awesome video of @malatoke that proves that the Habu *can* be landed perfectly and also with the nose up. Well, I was wrong on this and just wasn’t there myself from a skill level. Maybe I could meanwhile manage it (lacking a spare part since some half a year 🙄). Meanwhile I was practicing with a Freewing Banshee. That was also a little bouncy, but not as bad as the Habu. You need to respect any model with its regarding characteristics. The Habu allows a very slow speed without stalling. But, it can stall and drop a wing when you overdo it and try to make it slower by just lifting the nose without applying thrust. At a certain speed - which I still find hard to estimate - the stalling point comes. I learned it the hard way with all kinds of super stable planes (T-28, Conscendo). Make sure that you are only a few inches of the ground when this happens 😆. Or high enough to recover. Malatoke was demonstrating it perfectly, and bleeding off speed a long way parallel to the ground with cutting throttle, get into a flare and only the last seconds before the touchdown lifted the nose ever so slightly. It certainly helps, if you have a straight and long runway. Might be harder to come in from the field and the try a curve at too little speed before getting on the street where you plan to land.
      Sorry for the novel - being concise is none of my skills, sadly. Good luck with your further landings! 😊🤞

    I had problems with landing on my habu sts too. I broke the front landing gear few times. Still tried to learn how to land.

    • @A.M.-RC
      @A.M.-RC  4 месяца назад +1

      I'm sure it would bounce less in belly landings, although I have a feeling I could make that happen as well 😄

    I fly mine on grass, so I guess it doesnt bounce as much. I also have taken the gear off so it flies better, and belly landings are simpler. The 70mm SS was notorious for bouncing. Watch the first Saylor video, its funny. I've done quite a few bounce and go's with mine.

    Crash & cars on the road… oh yes we know all about that Alex as you may see on my umx maiden. This is why i sold my Habu a long time ago… no flaps. The Arrows Marlin is sooo much better with flaps & slowing right down plus half the price. If you put a larger battery in it should stop the bounce. It did mine. Hope all goes well with the fix.🇦🇺🦘🪃

      Funny thing is I land my F-15 a lot smoother, guess the Habu is great as a jet trainer, just not for landings.
      I was thinking a smaller battery to move the CG aft a bit, don't think anything much larger than the current 2200mah would fit.
      I might try some softer wheels, maybe reverse thrust although I find it a bit tricky to activate at the right moment.

    The Habu 50mm was tough for me, too. I still bounce it on occasion. And yes, I've glued mine back together, too. Here is a landing practice video I shot. It's kind of long. Feel free to jump around if you watch, but I think you're still coming in too fast. Cut that power as you make the turn to final, then try to hold it a foot off the ground as long as possible, and it'll land better.
