What I love about "Friends on the Other Side" is all the innuendos Facilier is doing regarding how he is going to turn the Prince into a frog. For instance, saying "hop from place to place", "green is all you need", "in the future, green is what I see", etc. I love the word play he uses.
Not to mention the card literally shows Naveen on a lily pad. Also with Lawrence, the card showed him switching places with Naveen, wearing card!Naveen's clothing, and as we see later it was meant literally. Probably something to do with the old rule that villains can't lie, especially supernatural ones, and Facilier may not be a Fae himself but it might be supernaturally enforced by his "friends" who he draws power from; although if his shadow is any indication of an irreversible change to his nature he may already be bound by the same rules, friends or not. But being unable to lie doesn't mean he has to say the truth. He says the _technical_ truth in a way his clients can interpret however they want, letting them hear what they want to hear. A con as old as time :V Also with his trickster character he likely enjoys the word games anyway, even without external rules.
@@biblicallyaccuratecockroach yes, totally agree, it's brilliant. I believe it is because this is a voodoo ritual: for it to succeed, Facilier must say what EFFECTIVELY will happen (and it says it) so that, when the 2 men agree, it happens. but they agreed because he said to them what will happen in a covert way so that they will accept
Keith David sang that song perfectly. Sold it as a car salesman because his character was trying to make a sale. Simple simple simple, then tonal change.
Keith David is a LEGEND in voice acting (he'll forever be Admiral Anderson from Mass Eefect to me ❤) So knowing this is him singing?! He's so incredibly iconic! Villains always get the best songs 😉

"Friends on The Other Side" is my favorite song of that decade, no question. It would be my favorite of two decades if it wasn't for Moana's "We Know The Way".
@@AfroAngola "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is my personal favorite Disney villain song (both the Pat Carroll animated original, and the Sherie Renee Scott version on the original Broadway soundtrack), but I gotta admit that, objectively speaking, nothing tops Hunchback's "Hellfire" for being the best villain song of them all. "Friends on the Other Side" is still amazing tho, and definitely a modern masterpiece for villain songs. This movie has some of my favorite Disney songs. Your analysis has made me realize how much work the artists put into them and why they're so wonderful.

“When We’re Human” has some of the same melodies from one of the songs from Cinderella (with Brandy and Whitney Houston) but I can’t put my finger on what song it is!
i just found this channel through your other princess and the frog video and I've got to say I'm in LOVE with your videos!! i didn't know what the different parts of the mouth were actually doing when it came to singing, let alone how changing shape affects them, but you explain it really clearly. plus you provide a lot of great background as to what genres these sounds are drawing from!! all that paired with your absolutely delightful voice and i feel like I'm back in my favorite music theory class all over again, it makes me so happy :) side note: i noticed that with friends on the other side, a lot of the breathiness comes across as if he's casting out a line for the characters to latch onto, only to reel them in during the more grounded parts. its a really entertaining juxtaposition to listen to and Keith David is a wonderful voice actor for sure.
I used to sing a lot for choir in school till my highschool choir teacher told me I couldn't sing which really hurt me a lot. So I dropped out ,this was also when I first transferred to a new school and his teaching style was way different from what I was used to . When I tried to explain that to him he just blamed me. I love singing and really want to get back into singing again. Your videos are helping me love singing again. So thank you so much. They are so fun to watch
NGL...never seen the movie but Friends on the Other Side is one of my favorite songs from Disney...Keith David does a lot to sell that song and character...I remember him fondly as Goliath from Gargoyles..he's got a great voice. Also I've been to New Orleans before, my maternal grandmother's sister used to live around there and we went to visit her once...place just has a feeling that suits a character like Dr. Facilier...floods like crazy though. We got caught up in a regular thunderstorm that lasted about...maybe an hour and the road in front of our hotel flooded and we had to take a detour to get to our hotel by going through a Walmart parking lot nearby.
I love this movie sooooo much. The music, just everything. It actually restored my faith in Disney in terms of more recent films. Great choice to do the PATF, Jaron! ❤
So far tonight I've watched Muses, Prince of Egypt (More Brian Stokes Mitchell please!), and then I had to jump to this one because of Keith David as Dr Facilier.
as a former theater kid, you should become a music teacher!!! i reign from The Jessye Norman School of Arts, located in Augusta, Ga. you remind me of the literal best years of my life.. i would have loved to learn from you.
To me the song Friends On the Other Side is the new Poor Unfortunate Souls (the old one) when it goes to Disney and villain songs these 2 are the best.
Jaron it might be out of your genre I was wondering if you could analyze a heavy metal band. The song particularly is "End of heartache" by Killswitch Engage, the guys vocals are amazing.
