I sang this song for a German concert we hosted, as a 14yr old. From that year on, I was in love with the German language, and have learnt it, since then....I am now 56 yrs old.

I grew up listening to my dad sing this song in English. He was a medic for the Allies during the second world war. Once in awhile, my mom would join him. She grew up and lived in the Netherlands. Very touched when I heard the choir sing this at the Comox Air Show this weekend.

I Lived in Germany and Australia and now I live in Italy I wasn't born during World War Two. The Lilli Marleene song makes me cry, because it's such a sad story. I like listening to the song in German. I Know that there are many translations in different languages.

I was a small boy during WW2, I lived in the South of England during the frequent bombing by the Luftwaffe, and my family survived the frequent bombing, like asking for shelter in an air raid on the way home from school.
What I see in retrospect is the wonderful young men whether British or German being sacrificed to one or another opposing governments. Lili Marlene was the sad truth sang by each warring sides.
I salute the men of both sides, bless 'em all!
    Grownup small boy.

+movie eccles Well said. My mother, who was 12-14years old , during the occupation of Denmark, told me , my grand father(born 1900) had some low key illegal printing of flyers, activities. A commandant once came to their house,to interrogate my grand father-nothing further happened to him.Yet the private german soldiers,my mother told, walked through the streets,singing-and were actually were friendly to the people. Very few, historians say, participated in crimes-it was only the psychopathic individuals. The german conscript didn't have a choice in , whether to go to war!! It was just a Waste of Young life- they were no worse than the soldiers of any other army.Kirsten.

+kirsten bjerregaard kristensen My grandmother told me something similar once. she lived in the countryside in north Italy with her parents and 7 siblings during the war, and she remembers her house being occupied from german soldiers on the way home. She told me they weren't rude with them and didn't harm her family in any way, but she also remember her neighbour being shot and his house burnt for a cow. I suppose it was a stange mix of good and bad ppl, of fanatics and innocent boys.

n front of the barrack, in front of its large gate
    There was a lantern
    And still it's standing there
Let's meet again in the lantern's shine
Let's be standing underneath of it
Like Lili Marleen used to do
Like Lili Marleen used to do
Both of our shadows looked like a single one
    That we loved each other
    Everyone could conclude
And all the people may see it well
As we stand underneath the lantern
Like Lili Marleen used to do
Like Lili Marleen used to do
    The sentry was already calling,
    They bugled the last post
"That may cost you three days!"
    "Comrade, I'll be right in!"
That was when we had to say goodbye
How I wished I could go with you
    With you, Lili Marleen
    With you, Lili Marleen
It knows the sound of your steps
    The lovely way you walk
It's burning each and every night
But about me it has forgotten since a long time
And should a woe happen to me -
Who'll be the one, standing by the lantern with you?
    With you, Lili Marleen?
    With you, Lili Marleen?
    From the realm of silence
    From the earthen grounds
Lifts me like I'm dreaming oh your lovely mouth
    When nightly mists are drifting
I'll be standing by the lantern
    Like once Lili Marleen
    Like once Lili Marleen

Lili Marleen was the song of both sides in North Afrika, The fighting was stopped for it. It's the most famous song of WW2. Both sides had several reunions together after the war and always started this with this song in German and English. There was respect and no hate ! The only original was sung by Lale Anderson

Lili Marlene was written by a WWl
    soldier..
    Remember the love
Of your life, remember the men
    of your heritage who
    all fought in the war..
because their mothers & fathers escaped and gave
    the eternal gift...

    Outside the barracks
    By the corner light
I'll always stand and wait for you at night
We will create a world for two
I'll wait for you, the whole night through
    For you, Lili Marleen
    For you, Lili Marleen
Bugler, tonight, don't play the call to arms
I want another evening with her charms
Then we will say goodbye and part
I'll always keep you in my heart
    With me, Lili Marleen
    With me, Lili Marleen
Give me a rose to show how much you care
Tie to the stem a lock of golden hair
    Surely tomorrow, you'll feel blue
But then will come a love that's new
    For you, Lili Marleen
    For you, Lili Marleen
When we are marching in the mud and cold
And when my pack seems more than I can hold
My love for you renews my might
I'm warm again, my pack is light
    It's you, Lili Marleen
    It's you, Lili Marleen
My love for you renews my might
I'm warm again, my pack is light
    It's you, Lili Marleen
    It's you, Lili Marleen

When I hear this song, I remeber the 50ties and the sad stories from the war. In my Salvationarmy, there was a old woman, who told me that, when they run to the shelter and the sound, of the bombs, in Helsinki, she sang this song so hard she could!

Mohammad Bilal : Just remember, Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels (a.k.a. ‘The Poison Dwarf’) HATED this song, and was livid that it was so popular in the German Wehrmacht. That’s a WW2 link worth celebrating!
