Im a Gay Man who loves heavy metal. It was a very important moment for me when Rob came out publicly. I was so scared for him and I thought his career may be over. Im so happy that fellow metalheads didnt stop listening to his amazing voice. I wish him and his partner many more healthy years

The weird, and maybe also the beautiful thing was, that most of my friends and I already knew he was gay. You could feel it, you knew it, and you didn't care. Because he was Rob Halford, and what we saw every time on stage, was a vocalist from who you could see in his eyes, that he was enjoying what he was doing on stage, and that he wanted all the fans in the venue or stadium to be part of it. He loves us, and we love him.

The cool thing about metalheads is that they are WAY more tolerant than anyone gives them credit for. When Rob came out, no one in the metal community batted an eye because a) everyone knew and b) no one cared - he's the metal god.

Perhaps you are too young too remember but I remember when Rob came out on MTV back in 1998. My oldest brother (now 60, 34 at the time) who is a die hard Priest fan and also a conservative Christian.. .Yet a drinker and a hellraiser. Had a very hard time accepting it. I remember a few posters were pulled of the wall and a couple of LP's and Cassettes smashed.
But in time he came to understand that sexuality has nothing to do with music.
And we all know the struggles Rob had with being in the closet and his bouts with addiction.
Thankfully now all that bigotry and nonsense is water under the bridge.
Long live Rob Halford and JP!

Yeah, of course. Everyone knew he was gay back even in the 80's when I became a huge fan, but nobody cared back then either because of those God given pipes he has and their great music. Just like Freddy Mercury who fans also knew was gay back in the day. Ya hear all this stuff about homophobia back in the 80's and it was probably true but people who were into heavy metal were more accepting of people and their differences and it really was all about the music. I had a poster of Judas Priest on my wall when I was a teenager and I had all their albums.

@@Joshuua1973 Well no. There's no such thing as preference in regards to sexuality. You're either straight(as in you have never been with men and have no interest in men sexual or otherwise), bisexual(you like both), and gay(you only like men). Someone can be bisexual and decide they would rather be with only a man or only a woman as their husband/wife/partner, but they are still bisexual. With straight and gay people there is no choice or preference involved whatsoever.

@Joshuua1973 just so you understand, how someone dresses or acts has no bearing on their sexuality. Lots of guys that are bi think they're straight because they don't dress or act in a way that is perceived to be a sexual stereotype. A truly straight man can't get sexually aroused by another man. I would say you're bisexual, at the minimum. Has nothing to do with how horny you might be on any given day. And any reference to sexuality and prison is not a good example of anything regarding sexuality.

Rob Halford is a classically trained opera singer. The best voice in heavy metal for sure. One of my favorite bands. However...I saw an interview with him many years ago where he said he was late for the concert coming from a gay bar. He was dressed in leather from the bar and didn't have time to change. The audience loved it. So it stuck and also became their look. I've seen Judas priest and iron maiden double bill 3 times. Saw Judas priest alone and Halford solo. I don't care how it started but it fit the narrative from this video...the look fit the music....denim and leather.... Rock on.

There is an interview Rob did many years ago, the exact date is lost in my brain somewhere, but in the interview Rob said this,...and i quote "i just assumed everyone knew i was gay"
I gained a whole different respect for Rob that day.. Judas priest where among a list of bands that revolutionised metal music..
In the dead of night...love bites. ❤

I saw Priest as a young teenager in the 80's and nobody cared that he was gay, because he kept it to himself. That was before the days of some celebrities making a career out of being gay, and nothing else to offer. Listen, nobody cares! If you've got the talent it doesn't matter which way you bend.

I saw priest the other night and i was blown away .
Do you know what's sad for me is this guy is a legend and priest are a legend and many bands from the same era ! What strikes me is that when the likes of priest , def leppard , iron maiden etc are no more who the fuck out there is going to fill that gap it saddens me because all these guys are monsters of rock and there is no young band that can fill the shoes of such epic tracks as victim of changes ,ace of spades , motorcycle man , the trooper etc , and its gutting

push it to the audience! I respect that about him! even now he doesn't and the LGTB fanatics need to back off pushing this on society and children and kids!

British Steel was a great album in that era start to finish, or front to back for Rob. I guess either works, lol
Remember kids you used to buy the whole damn thing, good or bad to hear one tune. Judas Priest cranked out some great jam and are still at it. Pretty impressive. Masters of the cover tune. Green Manalishi, Diamonds and Rust and so forth. Pretty bad ass in their prime. Everyone knew Halford was gay.

This leather and chains thing was really taken mainly from the biker scene, the 'muir' cap with chains -essential biker gear before the days of obligatory crash helmets in uk. likewise if you ever see a guy wearing a fireman's outfit, don't automatically assume he is filming gay porn.

I remember seeing Judas Priest in the late 80s and I was shocked when I realized Rob Halford's voice was real. As a musician myself I was impressed and absolutely amazed over his voice. He was a great front man as well. Later on there were rumors about his sexual orientation and it didn't matter, just like Freddie Mercury or any other talent. I am from New York City and I'm aware of the village and what was happening in the 80s. I was just a teenager in the 80s and my cousin was out of the closet although I was straight there was more of an acceptance of people's individualities back then. I think today people are making more than what it really needs to be. If people just went on about their lives people wouldn't even notice. God bless.

An old Arab proverb says you can't put the jin back in the bottle. We're seeing that today. The closet made society functional regardless of their sexuality while today anyone who is Godly is viewed as hateful. Weird how those finger pointers are the most hateful.

@hoobeydoobey1267 .....funny that you speak of Arabic things, and being Godly, when in the middle east, due to Sharia Law, they end people's lives, if it's found out, that someone is LGBTQIA+. Their own families behead or stone them to death.

Most influential singer in the history of metal. In a band that took it from it's early "doom" sorta feel with Sabbath and moved it forward to forever be changed. But I'm not sure I'm buying this "not for me, OK for thee" he's talking about, especially since lyrically he was singing about a leather bound "rough trade" bar visit on Fire Island much earlier on Sin After Sin

Since finding out he is gay, I always feel that maybe when he wore leather chaps and a cap etc, that he was playing up to his critics, a form of piss take of them. They would look at him, the gear and think he looked the part of a stereo typical gay man in many peoples minds, but to Rob it was for show and in his personal life like he stated, he wasn't and isn't into the leather scene as part of his sexuality.
