Even though this is technically a filler duel, It's absolutely one of my favorite duels in the entirety of Duelist Kingdom. It really shows how far Joey has come as a Duelist. A lot of people forget that the first time we see Joey even contemplating Duel Monsters, his entire deck was Monster Cards.
And by the end of the series he has amazing boss monsters such as red-eyes, Gillferd the lightning and probably one of the best cards of the Era in Jinzo, and awesome spells like Giant Trunade and the likes.
Considering if you didn't summon a monster each turn in duelist kingdom you lose Immediately, and how rare spell and traps card was then it wasn't a bad strategy to have all monsters.
@@TheDeathmail Less info about what though? Pegasus already knows everything. If anything, this duel dilutes his knowledge with useless info, because it contains a lot of matchup-specific strategies.
They both have one goal from the start, to defeat Pegasus because lots of lives are at stake, why waste time on a duel when they know the outcome? And heck, if Joey somehow luck his way through and win then they're all fucked.
Spoken like someone who knows nothing. Pegasus gains more of an advantage by seeing more of their cards/strategy. Them dueling each other only hurts them. This was stated by Yami Yugi in the page before the one shown in the video.
Honestly I love that the anime went through with the duel. The duel shows how fast Joey improved in the first season, from him losing to Yugi and Tea on table top to facing Yugi in the finals of a legitimate tournament and actually being able to stand toe to toe with him and it’s most likely this duel that caused Pegasus to regard Joey as one of the best duelists he had ever seen.
This is joey for ya, most MP of the yugioh s are mostly based on joey, like jaden in GX, yuma in ZEXEL and yuya in ARK-V all 3 of them has the same energy as joey, as they face there enemy with a smile, wile also haveing fun in there duels This shows just how great joey is as character
@@TheDeathmail Pegasus already had info on everyone in the top 4 already so it’s not like that mattered especially when he could just mind scan people in a duel.
@@vanguardRailgun924 Stop being braindead to push your objective. It makes no sense for them to Duel each other when the objective was to beat Pegasus. They would waste time dueling each other and only help Pegasus even more.
This is one of the only duels that had emotion, well to my 11 year old self it was emotional. When Yugi said "You fought a valiant duel and this is the hardest move I've ever had to make."
"you've fought a valiant duel my friend, and this is the hardest move i ever had to make...but this ends now" *starts crying* Really emotional, but still pretty good how they did it👍
Ironic, since it's the BEST duel from Season 1. There's so much continuity in this Duel, like Joey using Graverobber to form the Black Skull Dragon they used vs the Paradox Twins AND Yugi finishing it off with a play using the Time Wizard he gave Joey.
I must admit that I am surprised that Yugi's duel with Joey in duelist kingdom didn't happen in the manga. I am glad that it did happen in the anime though. That was a great duel that needed to happen to see how far Joey came as a duelist at this point in the story, and to show how strong their friendship truly is. It also brings more meaning to the promise between Yugi and Joey during battle city in the Japanese version to duel each other as true duelists.
This was one of the best character development for Joey in the series he went form an ok Duelist to being one of the only people who came closer to Kabi of defeating yugi with out the using of money r magic
Thats crazy! But the duel fit in so well with the pacing of the tournament that I didn't even notice it as a filler. Also that duel was crazy emotional where Atem literally cried right before making his final move. He usually never cries except for that time he lost Yugi in the Orichalcos season.
There is a lot of things to talk about that was different from the manga to the anime, like the fact that yugi faces duke in dungeon dice where Bakura helps him and the puzzle is destroyed that was turned to Yugi vs Bandit Keith in the anime. Also the fact that you can feel in Yugi vs Bakura in Battle City being dragged on due to how different the duels are between manga and anime.
A lot of things were radically different in the Battle City arc as early as before the arc even started. The biggest one being Joey not seeming to know the Battle City rules where he needed to sacrifice monsters an order to summon levels 5 or higher monsters during his duel against, I believe it was Weevil or Espa Roba, when before he had no problem understanding the rules against the Exodia Hunter.
Also back in the day there was hype to see a Yugi vs Joey duel in Battle City. I was always wondering why was it a big deal as they fought in Duelist Kingdom finals. But if the duel never happened, it makes more sense that way
@@retrogamer6403 It was Espa where Joey messed up summoning a high-level monster. Against the Exodia Hunter, they weren't using the Super Expert Rules since Joey summoned the Red-Eyes with no tribute, while in the anime they used Battle City Rules. In either case, Joey just forgot the rules in both versions for different reasons. Manga, he didn't know Battle City was under Expert Rules and anime, he forgot he needed to tribute.
@@paradoxzee6834 Yeah, Yugi and Joey's promise hungs on them never dueling before. The promise holds no, or very little, weight, because they've duel before during Duelist Kingdom.
This is by far one of the smartest things they could have ever done in that first season. this fight occurred so naturally & was such a fantastic duel. Definitely one of the times they improved a situation over the manga.
I learned years later after watching the anime this was a filler Duel. And it's actually pretty interesting overall as this Duel was less about showing off cards we didn't know Yugi or Joey had (minus one card) but rather the writers using what they had overall to make the plays. Literally beyond the Dark Sage at the very end I don't think Yugi OR Joey used a card we as viewers HADN'T seen them play up to this point. It was also a really good Duel for Joey as it showed his ability to think on his feet and make a strategy on the fly. But that's just how I felt looking back on it now as an adult.
That is because the Duelist Kingdom's decks very constant and they weren't allowed to tech in cards once the tournament started. So the time this duel happened, we have seen their entire deck outside of Yami's ritual for Magician of Chaos.
I haven't read the full manga, so I had no idea this duel was anime only. I think the manga decision makes sense, and it's also kinda cool to have a tournament arc where two main competitors agree to skip their match. That being said, the fact that the anime diverged from the manga to have this duel happen is also really cool, and this is easily one of my favorite duels in the series, so I'm glad they did!
Oh I knew….and to this day it’s very emotional to me because it’s two best friends facing each other each with a loved one’s well-being on the line. One of the best duels ever done between friends and rivals.
Had no idea this was a filler duel. Kind of crazy that the Manga didn't have this happened because it fits in so well with the flow of the arc. Good job to the anime writers.
I have to note that their motivation on entering Duelist Kingdom in the anime was different from the manga to begin with. In the Manga everyone knew about Grandpa being imprisoned in a video tape, an everyone also watched Serenity video tape because only Yugi's house has video tape player. From the first place both of them are working together to get both grandpa's soul back and the money prize. In the Anime only Yugi knew about the grandpa being imprisoned, and Joey watched Serenity video tape by himself and sneak on the ship alone later. So their goal weren't aligned in the first place and there's an unnecessary mini rivalry drama going on added by the anime that eventually came with this duel.
In the anime, everyone knew Grandpa's soul was stolen and Tea even asked if Grandpa's soul was on Duelist Kingdom. And everyone found out about Joey's sister being in trouble on the boat.
Wow I had no idea this duel didn’t take place in the manga either way it was a nice choice for the anime to make the duel because like you said it fit the pacing of the arc and also it was emotional because of how Yugi and Joey were both fighting for someone they care about and that if one of them looses they really couldn’t achieve their goals even though Yugi gave Joey the prize money. Also I liked the duel it was one of my favorite duels in the arc
Wow this was impressive, did not know that. And quite frankly that was a great idea to make it. Very beautiful indeed, gives me chills every time i re-watch it.
It's like Yugioh's source material is the manga and the anime is a poor adaptation of the manga changing Takahashi's story and you just refuse to read the manga.
Had no idea it was a filler duel, because it's arguably one of the best duels in the DM era. It shows Joey's growth as a duelist and a friend, and it's probably one of the most emotional duels right behind the Ceremonial Duel at the end of Season 5.
This is one of the reasons I feel there's no one definitive form of Yu-Gi-Oh, If someone asked me how to get into Yu-Gi-Oh I have no idea what I'd tell them.
I see what you mean, though I'd still go with the Manga because the Anime messed up a lot of things and has, and I mean it, way too much filler. It's great watching it after school when you're a kid but as a grown up person, it's real long and unnecessary. The Manga is just a good shonen, even compared to other great shows
The manga is the source material of all things Yugioh. It is the true story and holy bible envisioned by the creator Kazuki Takahashi. It is the definitive form of Yugioh. Yugioh manga > Transcend Game > The Darkside of Dimensions That is the Kazuki Takahashi canon of Yugioh. Anything else is an alteration of his story because it both 1998 and 2000 anime) did alter his story significantly. I'm not saying do not watch the anime, you can watch the spinoff anime just fine because the anime is the source material. But when it comes to the original series, the manga is what you should read. You can watch the anime after to see what was changed (and a lot was changed).
@@rob19ny By this logic, the Manga version would always be superior and there would be no reason for any Anime adaptation. Just because it's the source material doesn't mean it's always better or the path to go by. Takahashi himself had to fish things a little bit in his Manga, was pressured by his publishers, fell sick while writing the Manga and now finds some of his stories questionable, and he even had to skip over the entire Arc that was later (badly) adapted into yugioh R. Don't get me wrong, I do think the Manga is better and it's a great series, but just because the author made it doesn't mean it's superior. Instead, we should just consider both canons alternative takes on the story, none being right or wrong, that's how Akira Toriyama tells his fans to view the Anime version. At least in my opinion
@@bigfish5544 not to mention the yugioh dubs are some of the most ironically enjoyable dubs. They don't take it seriously and sometimes even lean into the goofiest bits and it just comes off as hilarious.
@@bigfish5544 I don't think Yugioh R was supposed to be an arc in the original manga. Maybe some scrap ideas, but not the premise. That and the only time we have document of Takahashi's being pressured was during Millennium World.
That actually explains the whole Dark Magician - Time Wizard thing. Everyone was saying that Yugi had an insider advantage, when in reality, it was a filler fight. But they implemented the D&D logic for it so well that they considered the fight to be a proper Yugioh battle, it was great seeing it in the anime even if it didn't exist in the manga.
Even as a kid I thought it didn’t make sense for them to duel, everybody knew that Yugi was the superior duelist and defeat Pegasus and win the prize money anyway
That was a good call on the Anime's part, this duel needed to happen instead of just letting Joey let Yugi through. We all knew Yugi was gonna give Joey the cash anyway, but it needed to happen.
Can we appreciate that the first season of Yugioh anime had baked in AMVs? "I'm not gonna panic" "I'm back" "No matter what" and it's as silly and weird as it is forward thinking and hardcore. I love it.
I knew about it because I read the manga back in high school about 12 years ago. It's a filler that is actually an improvement in my opinion. The duel is the anime is executed so well and the story they tell with it is so good. Not to mention the song from the dub. So good.
This never made sense to me since it was Yugi's card, so Joey was an idiot for not thinking Yugi had a counter to it or if he had a card like Baby Dragon that benefitted from being aged up.
i have the manga and was wondering where this duel went until i realized this while re-reading it It's wild how this duel gave us so many cards that don't fit the actual card descriptions and how it made much more sense
What's more surprising is that Johnny Steps is canon at all. If you asked anyone who's not familiar with the manga "who's the filler character: Johnny Steps or Rebecca Hawkins?", 9 out of 10 people would say Johnny Steps.

While I'm glad they duel in the show, I do think that narratively speaking, them NOT dueling makes more sense. Joey realizes that even though he may not be the same amateur he was at the start, he's not good enough to duel Pegasus so them dueling while awesome, is ultimately a waste of time. Even if by some miracle Joey beat Yugi, Pegasus would've stomped him afterwards.
After finally be able to read the duelist portion of the manga back in 2018(19?) I had a completely different view on the DM anime from then on. To point of me preferring the manga overall. (And I’m not just talking about the fillers in the anime.) With this duel being a prime example of why. In my opinion, this duel makes all characters unintentionally worse in our eyes. Whether it’s the constant comments from Tea, Tristan, and Bakura on how their friends forced to fight each other and when no one really forced them. So it just drags the pacing. To how people who only watched the anime says Yugi rigged the duel before it started with the Time Wizard and Dark Sage shenanigans. When he would never do that to his best friend. To missing out on a very strong character moment when Joey, NOT Yugi, Joey is the one who says Yugi got a score to settle and willingly pulled out of the tournament. Because he trust his best pal that much. The duel is good but I just think it makes our characters look unintentionally worse in the long run, especially for Yugi.
In my eyes this duel is not filler. It I one of the best duels in the anime and top it off with the song and everything that's on the line just makes it perfect
As someone who read the Yugioh manga after watching the anime I was kind of taking a back by the duel being absent, not like it really matter. And to add to this, the reason Joey decided to not duel Yugi is because he didn't want Pegasus to get anymore info about each other's deck/dueling style if I remember that correctly.
I’d hazard it was a mistake to not do the duel in the manga. It feels like a very natural conclusion for Joey’s duelist kingdom storyline though granted this does explain why a little why Kaiba didn’t consider Joey worthy of being in Battle City. Joey in the anime is the duelist kingdom silver medalist and even capable of beating someone who is outright cheating yet he’s not worthy when Weevil and Rex were literally round one knockouts yet they’re somehow still allowed to compete.
When a change to the original plan makes for an awesome duel. These are the rare filler moments you want to see. I wonder if that means Dark Sage was only introduced in the anime then. Because this was the duel Time Wizard tried to Time Magic Dark Magician. A wizard will only become stronger and more wizened with age.
I think it needed to be there because it fits so it shows joey growth as duelist. Which makes so much better when you consider yami Marik duel vs joey yami Marik had a god card where (at least in dub) he almost beat him but couldn’t call out a attack zapping him of his strength so despite coming in 4th place the people where so much difficult. So i think should of be there and it NEEDED to be there for the future episodes
kind of explains why there is a random montage / song. one of the best duels and a very good change. Joey and Yugi fighting so the strongest duelist goes against Peggy.
This is such a perfect move, and I'm glad it got the go ahead. I had no idea this had to be added by the anime till today. And like you said, it goes with the pacing of Duelist Kingdom finals perfectly. It's different when they interrupted the Battle City event to do Noah's thing. That part had no reason it couldn't have been sandwiched between Marik's downfall and Waking the Dragons.
I heard that in the manga, the reason why Joey let Yugi go on without a duel is so Pegasus can't study Yugi's deck and strategy, at least not any further. To me, that doesn't really work since Pegasus can pretty much read Yugi anyway. So it makes more sense to me that the two would have a duel as it shows how much Joey has learned in such a short amount of time that he would be able to go toe-to-toe with Yugi. And hey, if it were me, even though it could mean my next opponent would study my deck and strategy, I'd want the duel to happen anyway. At the very least, since it's the finals match, you might as well put on a show.
I definitely am glad they decided to let them duel! I think it was significantly more impactful to have them battle like this. Plus is gave rise to my favorite song in the whole series lol
Me and a pal of mine discovered this in discord a few months ago. It was fascinating when we discovered that yugi vs joey never happened in ygo duelist
It was a smart move to include this duel from a story writing perspective. Yugi has been mentoring Joey since the first episode, their relationship had a rocky start but grew with trust and respect. Now everything they both worked for comes into this duel, “two of a pair, now on opposite sides.” Lol
This blew my mind a few weeks ago when I learned that this duel was anime only. But then, I thought about it a little. It’s not that it doesn’t make sense, and as a “passing the torch” from Joey as sort of the real main character of the Duelist Kingdom arc to Yugi as the one to fight Pegasus, it’s thematically appropriate. However, there’s some weirdness from these episodes that can very easily be attributed to “it’s anime filler.” It’s slow, there’s a lot of static shot filled talking between moves, and the Dark Sage’s existence is a betrayal of the themes of friendship present throughout the story from the original manga up to this point. I still love this duels and these two episodes. I think it does a good job of showing how far Joey has come when pushed against the best players in the world, and reminding the audience of why he’s here (to save his sister’s eyesight) is also a good thing going into the finale as Yugi inherits his dream and carries it with him in the fight against Pegasus. And when Yugi tears up before ending the duel, man I was sobbing. I just want to acknowledge that it’s not perfect, and Takahashi-sensei probably didn’t include it in his original manga because he didn’t think it was necessary.
"the Dark Sage’s existence is a betrayal of the themes of friendship present throughout the story from the original manga up to this point." How? It was Yugi's card, why wouldn't he have a counter to it or have a card like Baby Dragon who benefitted from being aged up? Why it is Yugi's fault for Joey's lack of foresight?
@@Ramona122003, 1stly, please remember, this duel is anime only. It never happened in the manga. 2ndly, in this duel, there are two cards that represent Yugi and Joey’s friendship: B. Skull Dragon and Time. B. Skull is a monster that neither character can play on their own. They need help from the other person to use that card. In Joey’s case, he uses a creative combo of established cards to create the B. Skull Dragon on his own. The writing spotlights his spontaneity and quick thinking, and rewards him with an impressive move and an impressive monster. Time Wizard, given to Joey by Yugi, represents that Yugi will always have Joey’s back and help him whenever he needs it. This card powers up Joey’s monsters when they aren’t strong enough, or weaken Joey’s enemies monsters so he can take them down. When Joey uses Time Wizard against DM, betting everything on a coin flip, and hits heads, then he should’ve won. If the writers wanted him to lose, then he should’ve hit tails. Instead, he hits heads, and because that would mean Yugi should lose, the writers, or marketing, or someone, had to pull Dark Sage out of their ass. This card we’ve never seen before and never see again that only exists because either Konami wanted to sell more cards or the anime staff wrote themselves into a corner. Yugi having a counter to Time Wizard, means the Time Roulette doesn’t matter, because if Joey hit tails, he loses, and if he hits heads, he still loses. So, by playing Time Wizard, the card his best friend gave him, at all, Joey already lost the duel.
@@Anthintendo Yes, I know it's anime-only. Honestly the entire sequence it just the reusing what happened in the Para and Dox's duel since Fusion Monsters in Duelist Kingdom weren't their own cards. He could have used literally any combo as long as it was a capable fusion. Time Wizard only power-up one monster, Baby Dragon. And why should Joey win because he bet everything once again on a coin-flip? That is actually a regression since Bandit Keith was the first time Joey won by outplaying his opponent instead of relying on luck and Time Wizard. You still haven't answered why Dark Magician benefitting from Time Wizard came out of nowhere when Time Wizard was a) Yugi's card that he gave Joey and b) why wouldn't he have a card that would have benefitted from being aged up like Baby Dragon? To be blunt, Joey deserved to lose the way he did because he was an idiot for never once considering that Yugi would have an out to his own card or he may have a card that benefitted from being aged, especially when Yugi's deck is filled with cards that support Dark Magician like Magic Hats, Magic Box, Magic Formula, and a ritual card to turn Dark Magician to Magician of Chaos. Also "This card we’ve never seen before and never see again." Come on now. This card never being seen again is because Yugi doesn't have Time Wizard anymore since Joey still has it in Battle City and even Doma and Yugi couldn't used it before because he didn't have Time Wizard unless Joey used it during their double duel with the Paradox Brothers.
@@Ramona122003, Dark Sage, out of universe, in the REAL WORLD did not not exist. It wasn’t the manga, so the anime staff didn’t have to adapt it. Someone at Konami or NAS or Studio Gallop made the EXECUTIVE DECISION to create Dark Sage. Someone, a writer or a producer, made this decision to include Dark Sage as a come from behind victory mechanic for Yugi, because OF COURSE Joey can’t win. Joey can’t win, because, in the manga they are adapting, Yugi duels Pegasus. Whether or not it makes sense that Yugi has a counter for Time Wizard, that’s up to the viewer. In DK, cards just kind of show up. It’s half a card game, half D&D improv, which is an aspect of this part of the story that I honestly love. In the manga and the canon material, Kazakh Takahashi uses this sort of fast and loose approach to create compelling scenarios and creative imagery. And future filler material, like the video game arc, the Noah arc, the Orichalcos arc and the Grand Championship arc, seem to understand this approach better than this episode. Also, to use your own point against you, Joey didn’t know about MoC because it never showed up until the Pegasus duel. And Yugi has a lot of combo cards: Gaia, Curse of Dragon, and Poly. Kuriboh and Multiply. Curse of Dragon and Burning Land. Horn of the Unicorn and any of his beast type monsters. Makiyu and Summoned Skull. Also, how often in DK does DM specifically win Yugi duels? Weevil lost to Summoned Skull and Makiyu. Mako lost to Giant Soldier of Stone of Mystical Moon. Fake Kaiba lost to Blue-Eyes and Mystical Elf (Yami Bakura doesn’t count because that’s another anime only duel). PaniK lost to Catapult Turtle and Gaia the Dragon Champion. The Paradox Brothers lost to a 3-way combo of B. Skull Dragon, Dark Magician (finally) and Mystic Box (which in this instance breaks how it’s supposed to work). He beat Mai with Black Luster Soldier. And finally Pegasus loses to Kuriboh and Multiply AND Magician of Chaos. Dark Magician is not Yugi’s “win button.” And once again, the thing you are arguing to justify Joey’s loss doesn’t matter, because this episode is filler. I don’t like Dark Sage, because it’s a filler ass pull that takes the symbolic representation of Yugi and Joey’s friendship, Time Wizard, and uses it against them. There’s now an underlying toxicity on a rewatch of the moment when Yugi give TW to Joey. A sense of “but I can beat it, and you have no idea.” Another character, Weevil, later in Battle City, will sneak a card into Joey’s deck fully prepared to take advantage of it and counter it. This is basically the same thing that happens in the Yugi-Joey duel, which doesn’t make sense, because Weevil is a cheating antagonist and Yugi and Joey are best friends.
@@Anthintendo Using the real world doesn't matter in this context since the anime version of Dark Saga pre-dates the IRL game. "It wasn’t the manga, so the anime staff didn’t have to adapt it." And? The entire duel didn't happened in the manga, so why does it matter? "In DK, cards just kind of show up." Not really since the cards everyone used in DK is probably the most constant decks we have in both the manga and anime since everyone could only run 40 cards and adding cards wasn't allowed. The cards that seemingly come out of nowhere are the Fusion and Ritual Monster because Fusions weren't their own cards. You just needed to make a capable fusion and the hologram would render it. The same with Time Wizard since Dark Sage and Thousand Dragon are not their own card, but a transformed state of Dark Magician and Baby Dragon no different than fusion or ritual cards. Like Black Luster Solider is a transformed Gaia. "And future filler material, like the video game arc, the Noah arc, the Orichalcos arc and the Grand Championship arc, seem to understand this approach better than this episode." That is extremely debatable. Especially Grand Championship arc is closer to the IRL game than the manga and or even the anime. "Also, to use your own point against you, Joey didn’t know about MoC because it never showed up until the Pegasus duel. And Yugi has a lot of combo cards: Gaia, Curse of Dragon, and Poly. Kuriboh and Multiply. Curse of Dragon and Burning Land. Horn of the Unicorn and any of his beast type monsters. Makiyu and Summoned Skull." And how is that using my own point against me. If anything, you added to it by showing that Yugi could have other monsters that combo into Time Wizard and not just Dark Magician. And Dark Magician still had more support cards than the combos you named. "Also, how often in DK does DM specifically win Yugi duels?" I don't see how that matters since Yugi wins with anything in his hand. "Yami Bakura doesn’t count because that’s another anime only duel" And we're talking about an anime only duel and Yami Bakura's duel takes the place of his introduction arc since DM skipped Monster World. So no, you can't discount it because it doesn't fit your point. "the thing you are arguing to justify Joey’s loss doesn’t matter, because this episode is filler." And? We're talking about the duel itself which is canon to the anime, so it doesn't matter in this context. "I don’t like Dark Sage, because it’s a filler ass pull that takes the symbolic representation of Yugi and Joey’s friendship" And I call BS. I don't see how it's symbolic for Joey to win using his best friend's own and said friend has no answer for it because that is highly unrealistic. It's no different than a real life game. "There’s now an underlying toxicity on a rewatch of the moment when Yugi give TW to Joey. A sense of “but I can beat it, and you have no idea.”" Most like people being needlessly salty because of Joey's lack of foresight and duel sense. "Another character, Weevil, later in Battle City, will sneak a card into Joey’s deck fully prepared to take advantage of it and counter it." Because Joey is a better duelist by then and Weevil has never been as skilled as Yugi. You also ignore the reason why Saga Saga screwed Joey by using Weevil. Namely, Joey lost because he once again gambled everything on Time Wizard to win and it backfired, compared to Weevil whose setup was apparent on Joey's first turn giving him the time to adapt. "This is basically the same thing that happens in the Yugi-Joey duel, which doesn’t make sense, because Weevil is a cheating antagonist and Yugi and Joey are best friends." It's nowhere near the same thing when Weevil had a bunch of kids steal Joey's deck to add a card to give him the advantage, while Yugi saw Joey abusing Time Wizard although Duelist Kingdom. Yugi would have been a bad friend by not showing Joey why this was foolish to used his own card against him and he really should have considered that Yugi had an out. If anything, it showed how much Yugi respects Joey as a duelist by not going easy on him and gives Joey another lesson in planning ahead and considered the possibilities instead of relying on a gamble effect.
Considering how much luck is involved with Joey's playstyle, it may not have mattered unless Pegasus was able to just negate the luck-use cards altogether before Joey could even play them. Hard to say.
While the duel itself was amazing, I do think the story works better when it doesn't happen. Joey knows he can't beat Pegasus and doesn't want to show him more of Yugi's strategies so he forfeits. On top of that, when Battle City rolls around and Yugi and Joey promise to face each other when Joey has progressed, it makes it all the more heartbreaking when Joey gets possessed and that THAT'S the duel they finally have against each other.
I mean Pegasus probably has been watching every duel Yugi has played in in the tournament. He’s probably able to see which card has been played through the duel arena’s scanners. Plus Pegasus can read minds and is the game’s creator, so I doubt Joey could hide any strategies Yugi hide
@@BlueBlazeKing Even still, imagine if Yugi accidentally used the same combo against Joey that he would use to destroy Toon World. Pegasus might've known about the cards individually means he may be able to play against it. From Joey's point of view there's really no reason to duel Yugi. And Pegasus already respected him thanks to the Bandit Keith duel, not that he'd care since Pegasus was still a villain
Is that the reason where is a song/music video during this duel? If so, what does that mean for the other songs in the Duelist Kingdom ark? (Thinking of Kaiba's "Give it up, cause now I'm back" song, and probably another one.)
If this didn't happen in the anime..... Dark Sage wouldn't have existed 😳 and Joey would have not level up as a duelist. Awesome post as always! 🤝🏼🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Pegasus only uses the same deck in the duelist kingdom, not including the second episode. He wasnt gonna change his deck, he can see yugis cards using the millenium items. Joey vs Yugi helped him with nothing, it was a great duel and one of my favorite. ITS A GOOD THING
On some rare occasions filler can be just as good as the source material. Sometimes so much so that it ends up getting added to the Manga later because the fans or writers liked it so much.
I actually didn't know that this duel only happened in the anime, until I read the manga. I was surprised and kind of disappointed. Even though this wasn't the best duel in the Duelist Kingdom Arc, it was actually a great duel (even though the ending was obvious).
I had no idea either wow so much nostalgia from this duel hard 2 think of duelist kingdom without this 1 man glad they added it. Loved da song n still listen 2 it every once in awhile.
Tbh, while I remembered that this duel didn’t actually take place in the manga, it is a shame it didn’t. It would have been really good there too, I think.
I’m happy they decided to do this. I get the reasoning on why this duel didn’t happen, but at the same time, what was the point of Joey even competing in the tournament or he was just going to surrender?
And the anime was right. Yugioh was one of the earliest anime that was all about fiendship and friendship was always meant to be challenged. They already set the conflict at the start of the arc. Yugi needs to fight Pegasus to rescue his gramp and Joey needs to win so that he can save his sister. Even at the time we knew Joey would never be a challenge for Yugi in terms of skills, having Joey surrender to avoid an inevitable clash of friendship was reallly lame.
I liked that they went through with this. This is the only time we get to see a earnest duel from start to finish with these two. Obviously the Battle City incident doesn't count.

Not really.... they knew that Yugi was stronger and they wanted to give Pegasus less info... so it felt better for them....
@@TheDeathmail Less info about what though? Pegasus already knows everything. If anything, this duel dilutes his knowledge with useless info, because it contains a lot of matchup-specific strategies.
Great character development all around!
This is joey for ya, most MP of the yugioh s are mostly based on joey, like jaden in GX, yuma in ZEXEL and yuya in ARK-V all 3 of them has the same energy as joey, as they face there enemy with a smile, wile also haveing fun in there duels
This shows just how great joey is as character
Except, they knew Yugi was better and frankly, it gives Pegasus more info... so it was a bad move...
But it was a great duel....
Yes. I hate that Joey backed out and let Yugi just duel Pegasus. Imagine how cool Black Skull Dragon would look on his side of the field in the magna

The time wizard thing makes a lot more sense now.
How so?
What you mean by that
Everyone deserves a friendship like Yugi & Joey
Yes!
This is one of the only duels that had emotion, well to my 11 year old self it was emotional. When Yugi said "You fought a valiant duel and this is the hardest move I've ever had to make."
No because reading that out loud gave me chills..
Bruh that was a different kinda hurt
It is emotional. A lot about Yu-Gi-Oh is imo.
"you've fought a valiant duel my friend, and this is the hardest move i ever had to make...but this ends now" *starts crying*
Really emotional, but still pretty good how they did it👍
Ironic, since it's the BEST duel from Season 1.
They gave an explanation in the manga, pretty much if they play less duels Pegasus will have less info about their decks and strategies.

I'd love to meet Kabi one day
Thats crazy!
I was actually surprised by this when I read the manga
Man been in this fandom for over 10+ years now and still learning new things!! Tysm for this info. that insane it wasent in the manga!
It's like Yugioh's source material is the manga and the anime is a poor adaptation of the manga changing Takahashi's story and you just refuse to read the manga.
I loved this duel and never knew this
Had no idea that was not in the manga it’s one of my favourite duel in the first season
Had no idea it was a filler duel, because it's arguably one of the best duels in the DM era. It shows Joey's growth as a duelist and a friend, and it's probably one of the most emotional duels right behind the Ceremonial Duel at the end of Season 5.
It’s a very heartwarming duel and it was awesome.
Yugioh manga > Transcend Game > The Darkside of Dimensions
That is the Kazuki Takahashi canon of Yugioh.

My favorite duel from season 1
That actually explains the whole Dark Magician - Time Wizard thing. Everyone was saying that Yugi had an insider advantage, when in reality, it was a filler fight.
But they implemented the D&D logic for it so well that they considered the fight to be a proper Yugioh battle, it was great seeing it in the anime even if it didn't exist in the manga.
Even as a kid I thought it didn’t make sense for them to duel, everybody knew that Yugi was the superior duelist and defeat Pegasus and win the prize money anyway
Never knew they never duel in the manga, but Im glad the anime let them duel. Joey is definitely my Fav OG YGO & he’s a Underdog
That was a good call on the Anime's part, this duel needed to happen instead of just letting Joey let Yugi through.
We all knew Yugi was gonna give Joey the cash anyway, but it needed to happen.
And it was a well-written duel too. The writers actually knew their stuff back then.
Can we appreciate that the first season of Yugioh anime had baked in AMVs? "I'm not gonna panic" "I'm back" "No matter what" and it's as silly and weird as it is forward thinking and hardcore. I love it.
This is out of context but i love your content as a long time Yu-Gi-Oh fan. Keep doing what you're doing please 🙏
I knew about it because I read the manga back in high school about 12 years ago. It's a filler that is actually an improvement in my opinion. The duel is the anime is executed so well and the story they tell with it is so good. Not to mention the song from the dub. So good.
One of my favorite duel and greatest song
"Joey, remember that Time Wizard I gave you to "help" with your duels? So I lied, it was meant to screw you over so I'll win in our duel"
This never made sense to me since it was Yugi's card, so Joey was an idiot for not thinking Yugi had a counter to it or if he had a card like Baby Dragon that benefitted from being aged up.
I did not know that but glad they gave them a proper duel cause it showed how much Joey had come as a duelist and how much respect each other had
i have the manga and was wondering where this duel went until i realized this while re-reading it
It's wild how this duel gave us so many cards that don't fit the actual card descriptions and how it made much more sense

One of the greatest duels of the arc
After finally be able to read the duelist portion of the manga back in 2018(19?) I had a completely different view on the DM anime from then on. To point of me preferring the manga overall. (And I’m not just talking about the fillers in the anime.)
With this duel being a prime example of why.
So iconic, can’t believe it’s not in the manga
The only duel to have it's own theme... Kind of a hint...
One of the best duels from the first arch
IM CRYING I KNEW ITS WAS AMAZING
The reason being was that the anime was about to catch the manga and they needed something to fill time.
I've been an anime only yugioh fan. Only ever had the first chapter of the manga though and I did enjoy it.
"the Dark Sage’s existence is a betrayal of the themes of friendship present throughout the story from the original manga up to this point."
How?
Also "This card we’ve never seen before and never see again."
Come on now.
Dark Magician is not Yugi’s “win button.”
And once again, the thing you are arguing to justify Joey’s loss doesn’t matter, because this episode is filler.
I don’t like Dark Sage, because it’s a filler ass pull that takes the symbolic representation of Yugi and Joey’s friendship, Time Wizard, and uses it against them. There’s now an underlying toxicity on a rewatch of the moment when Yugi give TW to Joey. A sense of “but I can beat it, and you have no idea.”
Another character, Weevil, later in Battle City, will sneak a card into Joey’s deck fully prepared to take advantage of it and counter it.
"It wasn’t the manga, so the anime staff didn’t have to adapt it."
And? The entire duel didn't happened in the manga, so why does it matter?
"In DK, cards just kind of show up."
Not really since the cards everyone used in DK is probably the most constant decks we have in both the manga and anime since everyone could only run 40 cards and adding cards wasn't allowed.
"And future filler material, like the video game arc, the Noah arc, the Orichalcos arc and the Grand Championship arc, seem to understand this approach better than this episode."
That is extremely debatable.
Makiyu and Summoned Skull."
And how is that using my own point against me. If anything, you added to it by showing that Yugi could have other monsters that combo into Time Wizard and not just Dark Magician. And Dark Magician still had more support cards than the combos you named.
"Also, how often in DK does DM specifically win Yugi duels?"
I don't see how that matters since Yugi wins with anything in his hand.
"Yami Bakura doesn’t count because that’s another anime only duel"
And we're talking about an anime only duel and Yami Bakura's duel takes the place of his introduction arc since DM skipped Monster World. So no, you can't discount it because it doesn't fit your point.
"the thing you are arguing to justify Joey’s loss doesn’t matter, because this episode is filler."
And? We're talking about the duel itself which is canon to the anime, so it doesn't matter in this context.
"I don’t like Dark Sage, because it’s a filler ass pull that takes the symbolic representation of Yugi and Joey’s friendship"
And I call BS. I don't see how it's symbolic for Joey to win using his best friend's own and said friend has no answer for it because that is highly unrealistic. It's no different than a real life game.
"There’s now an underlying toxicity on a rewatch of the moment when Yugi give TW to Joey. A sense of “but I can beat it, and you have no idea.”"
Most like people being needlessly salty because of Joey's lack of foresight and duel sense.
"Another character, Weevil, later in Battle City, will sneak a card into Joey’s deck fully prepared to take advantage of it and counter it."
Because Joey is a better duelist by then and Weevil has never been as skilled as Yugi. You also ignore the reason why Saga Saga screwed Joey by using Weevil. Namely, Joey lost because he once again gambled everything on Time Wizard to win and it backfired, compared to Weevil whose setup was apparent on Joey's first turn giving him the time to adapt.
"This is basically the same thing that happens in the Yugi-Joey duel, which doesn’t make sense, because Weevil is a cheating antagonist and Yugi and Joey are best friends."
It's nowhere near the same thing when Weevil had a bunch of kids steal Joey's deck to add a card to give him the advantage, while Yugi saw Joey abusing Time Wizard although Duelist Kingdom.
Maybe Joey could have a rare brainwave like Fry, making it hard for Pegasus to read his mind.
That’s crazy
This is one of the most iconic duels
A duel that should’ve happened was yugi vs Joey after battle city!
Everytime I see Joey all I think is, when Joey asks marik do I look stupid to you and he responds yes.
Could you imagine how fast Joey would have been folded in a duel against Pegasus? Yugi barely beat him with two minds 😂
Considering how much luck is involved with Joey's playstyle, it may not have mattered unless Pegasus was able to just negate the luck-use cards altogether before Joey could even play them. Hard to say.
It also has one of the best songs in the series only followed by the GX and 5Ds English themes
One of the greatest duels ever
I was actually kinda shocked that they didn't duel in the manga when I read it recently.
It made a lot of sense that they would.
We also never see the result of Yugi vs Joey in the manga after battle city and never see red eyes blck dragon again
Joey bringing out Black Skull Dragon or whatever it is called was epic
I found out in the imagery
"One of the duels between Yugi Moto and Joey Wheeler" you mean the only one we see.
Huh, I did not know that. That's pretty interesting
I had no idea either wow so much nostalgia from this duel hard 2 think of duelist kingdom without this 1 man glad they added it. Loved da song n still listen 2 it every once in awhile.
Knew it was filler but by God's name, this is one of the very few times an anime in general did better than the manga.
I didnt know this but thats mostly cuz that duel is great and fits so perfectly
Dark Sage was so hard to summon, even the Manga didn't want to debut him 😂
It may have been a filler, but the tensity and those Tears....were real!!!!!
I’ll be honest I didn’t even know there was a Yu-Gi-Oh manga until just now.
Tbh, while I remembered that this duel didn’t actually take place in the manga, it is a shame it didn’t. It would have been really good there too, I think.
I think this is a nice touch they added :>
it would have been cool that they added their duel after duel City Arc. it would be awesome lol
I’m happy they decided to do this. I get the reasoning on why this duel didn’t happen, but at the same time, what was the point of Joey even competing in the tournament or he was just going to surrender?
I learned about this recently from the comments in one of your other videos xD
And the anime was right. Yugioh was one of the earliest anime that was all about fiendship and friendship was always meant to be challenged. They already set the conflict at the start of the arc. Yugi needs to fight Pegasus to rescue his gramp and Joey needs to win so that he can save his sister. Even at the time we knew Joey would never be a challenge for Yugi in terms of skills, having Joey surrender to avoid an inevitable clash of friendship was reallly lame.
I didn't know this duel was anime only but this was a good duel
I didn't but this was an awesome duel to watch 🎉🎉🎉
This was a fun duel. In all honesty, I like it, and I agree that it fit the pacing really well.
Yeah I read the Manga 2 years ago, I was surprised by this fact as well
I liked that they went through with this.
This is the only time we get to see a earnest duel from start to finish with these two.
Obviously the Battle City incident doesn't count.
